PRAYER UPON ENTERING: O Lord God, You led Your ancient people
through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. Guide the
people of Your Church that following our Savior we may walk through the
wilderness of this world toward the glory of the world to come; through
Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION: Individual Confession
and Absolution times for Lent are 9am – 9:45am Wednesday mornings and
5:30pm – 6:15pm in the Evening at the communion rail in the church.
Individual Confession and Absolution may also be scheduled by
appointment with the pastors. To learn more about it and how it works
look on pages 292-293 in the hymnal. As preparation you may find the
publication “Self-Examination and Reflection: The Ten Commandments
preach Repentance; that is, by them God shows us our sin and how much
we need a Savior,"" helpful. This publication can be found at the various
entrances to the sanctuary. May God bless this holy season of prayerful
and penitential reflection!
Large print bulletins and hearing devices are available. Please ask an usher

The Music Room, the room to your right before entering the sanctuary,
is available for parents with small children who need to step out during
the service. The service is televised in the Music Room.
The time before the service is a time of prayer and preparation to receive
the Lord’s gifts of salvation. In addition to prayer, look over the readings
and the words to the hymns during this preparation time.
Please turn off all cell phones and refrain from taking pictures during the

Stewardship Thought for the week...
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for
good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Even the good we do in this world is a gift from God, prepared beforehand
for us to do. And this too is a gift! For isn’t doing good also good for the one
who does it? So from first to last, from the Lord’s free salvation given to us
to the good works He’s prepared for us to walk in, it is all a gift of God’s
grace.

Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not

because their deeds were evil. 20For everyone who does wicked things
hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be
exposed. 21But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it
may be clearly seen that his deeds have been carried out in God.”
Notes on Today’s Service
Treasures from the Church: “As Christians we are used to having crosses in the front
of the church, on the altar, or against a wall. Very few would approve of having a
serpent up front. It would be horrible to look at the statue of a huge snake.
However, it was in the abomination of a cross, which was more horrible than a snake
hanging from a crossbar, that God sacrificed His Son. From our own experience we
know that nothing is free. The cliché is that there is no such thing as a free lunch.
We all know that free medical care is going to cost the majority of us something. If
salvation is free for us, it was not free for God. When God created the world, He
spoke the Word and it was done. When He saved us, He worked. He gave all of
Himself. ‘God so loved the world that He gave His only Son,’ which means that He
sacrificed Himself. It cost Him everything. He emptied Himself of what He was. For
God, the death of is Son was not a pastime. It was what God was all about. This is
why our churches and homes have crosses or crucifixes, figures of the dying Christ
on a cross. The crucifix is a statement of what we believe, teach and confess.” Dr.

Today’s Reading: The people sinned by speaking “against God and against Moses,”
and the Lord called them to repentance by sending fiery serpents, which “bit the
people, so that many people of Israel died” (Num. 21:4–6). When the people confessed
their sin, the Lord provided a means of rescue from death. He instructed Moses to
“make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole,” so that “if a serpent bit anyone, he would
look at the bronze serpent and live” (Num. 21:8). Thus God sent His Son into the
world, in the likeness of our sin and death, and lifted Him up on the pole of the cross,
that whoever looks to Him in faith “may have eternal life” (John 3:14–16). By His
cross, “the light has come into the world,” not for condemnation, but “that the world
might be saved through Him” (John 3:17–19). While we “were dead in the trespasses
and sins” in which we once lived (Eph. 2:1), God loved us, calling us to repentance and
raising us up with Christ to live “with Him in the heavenly places” (Eph. 2:4–6).
The Divine Service: “Christian congregations know that all preachers commit pulpit
sins. Sermons of younger pastors are sometimes convoluted. Other pastors tell
interesting stories, but sometimes the point of the story is lost even before the
sermon is over. It was a good story but what was it all about? Older pastors tend to
ramble. They go off in this direction and that direction and never seem to know
where the end of the sermon is. I have thought of giving my students a bell to ring
every time I commit the sin of rambling. Good or bad, the people rarely remember
the sermons, either a good one or a bad one. They remember the liturgy. They
remember the hymns. They can picture the cross of Jesus Christ in their minds. The
cross, or the form of the crucified Christ, constantly reinforces what they believe. If I
cannot follow the sermon, I can at least understand the cross. When we die, only the
cross is important. Think of the line from the familiar hymn, ‘Abide with Me.’ ‘Hold
Thou Thy Cross before my closing eyes, shine through the gloom and point me to the
skies.’ The cross is the simple message of my sin against God and His redeeming me
in Jesus. On the altar piece at St. Mary’s Church in Wittenberg is a painting of Luther
preaching. Between him and the congregation is the crucified Christ symbolizing that
preaching must be about Jesus Christ.”

Sermon: God is not angry with you! His wrath against you and all your sin has been
satisfied in Jesus Christ His only begotten Son. Jesus took all your sin. He bore it all
in His body willingly. Jesus suffered the complete fury of God’s wrath and all its
damnation as your substitute! Jesus gets in between God’s wrath and you. He
mediates for you on the cross. That is how much God loves you! That’s the clincher!
His promise to you today is this: “all who believe in Me will not perish but have
eternal life.” We have no need to be afraid. Believe in Jesus. Expose your sin and
sinfulness to the light of His death and resurrection. Use Jesus Christ and Him
crucified against all your sin, against all of Satan’s accusations and against death
itself. Christ is the Victor and so are you!
