The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa (NZG) is a rapidly transforming facility reporting to the National Research Foundation (NRF). It has an impressive animal collection, a breeding centre as well as a wildlife research centre. The NZG is well placed as an education and awareness platform for visitors comprising of educators, learners, students, special interest groups and the general public. The following challenging opportunity is in the process of being filled: The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa is looking a well-qualified, experienced, hard-working, enthusiastic and motivated person to be appointed as: Animal Attendant: Marine Mammals and Birds Animal Collections and Conservation Department The successful applicant will be expected to perform the following duties: Conduct animal conditioning & training Conduct daily inspection, monitor animal behaviour and documentation Conduct seal and penguin presentations for visiting public Enclosure management, including cleaning and camp decorating Environmental enrichment Feeding of seals and penguins Assist with research projects Assist as and when instructed by the supervisor complete Minimum Requirements Grade 12 certificate Valid driver’s license Ability to swim well Six months related work experience Additional preferred requirements Qualification or partly completed qualification in Nature Conservation / Zoology / Wildlife Management A Class VI, V or IV commercial dive qualification. Experience in training of seals and presentation of seal shows. Competencies Passion for animals Knowledge of animal management Good interpersonal and public communication skills. Ability to work under pressure Ability to work in a team and independently Must be physically fit. Successful applicants must be prepared to undergo testing for allergies and also vaccinations for tetanus, rabies and other needed vaccinations. A positive test does not preclude employment at the NZG. If the successful candidate does not have a commercial dive qualification, they will have to pass a basic swim test in order to be eligible for the position.
