Evacuations are signalled by long continuous ringing of the bell. Everyone assembles on the ovals. Evacuations occur for many reasons but generally are due to fire or smoke. Lockdowns are signalled by short sharp ringing of the bell. Lockdowns result from danger outside. I have been involved in school lockdowns when a large snake became comfortable outside the junior classrooms; also when a mini cyclone blew through the school unexpectedly. Both procedures need to be practised to ensure all students and staff are safe if either situation occurs. Please be reassured that I would contact you if either situation occurred in reality (as opposed to our usual practising of these activities). We did practice our Fire Evacuation two weeks ago. Bystander Behaviour March has National “Bullying NO Way” Day and my focus is on Bystander Behaviour. I have included a few snippets from the “Bullying No Way” website to discuss Bystander Behaviour. What's the issue? Bullying is a difficult problem that only gets worse when it is ignored. Research has demonstrated that bystanders play a significant role in bullying. -Bystanders are present most of the time (85%), where adults are rarely present -Most young people feel uncomfortable but very few know what to do to stop it happening -Bullying behaviour is reinforced where people watch but do nothing -When bystanders do intervene, the bullying is more likely to stop quickly most of the time. The solutions involve not only students but also school staff and parents. Members of the whole school community may be involved in bullying, being bullied or by knowing that the bullying is happening. We can each be part of the problem - or part of the solution. It's up to everyone to create a safe school environment and we can all help. Motivating bystanders to act is now being promoted as a major positive response, not just for schools, but in communities and workplaces. Who are bystanders We are all bystanders if we are aware of something happening but do not act to stop it. We can be bystanders even if we are not actually present. Groups and communities, such as schools, can even be said to show bystander behaviour. Bystander behaviour includes: • • • • watching an argument on the street gathering to watch a playground fight knowing that someone is being hurt but not intervening or seeking help failing to investigate and be proactive about the bullying in your school. Email: [email protected] School Phone Number: 4058 9222 Although we might not be directly involved, our behaviours contribute significantly to what takes place. Some behaviours can make the problem worse: • -giving 'silent approval' by not becoming involved • -assisting by joining in • -reinforcing by encouraging, cheering and laughing, even if not actively participating. Alternatively, some behaviours can be helpful: • -trying to stop the bullying behaviour by defending the person being bullied, reporting the behaviour • -challenging and positively influencing individual and group attitudes and beliefs • -learning and teaching about the deeper issues which underlie bullying behaviour. Students are important in creating a safe and supportive school environment. First of all, keep yourself safe. Each bullying situation is different. Responses need to be appropriate to the situation and it's not always appropriate for young people to act alone. Then, consider that the messages you give out, even in little ways, can make a huge difference. Research has shown that the greatest influence on students' bystander behaviour is what they think their friends (ie. you!) expect of them - not what their teacher or parents think. You can help by some of the following: • Make it clear to your friends that you won't be involved in bullying behaviour. • Never stand by and watch or encourage bullying behaviour. • Do not harass, tease or spread gossip about others. • Respect everyone and value the differences between people. • Be friendly towards others who are new to your school, who are left out or on their own. If you see someone being bullied, keep safe and choose your response to match the situation: • Speak up and let the person doing the bullying know what they are doing is bullying • Refuse to join in with their bullying and walk away • Support the student who is being bullied to ask for help • Ask a teacher or support person for help. Reporting what happened can help 'unravel' a situation. Don’t play in stormwater drains As the wet weather season continues, please take the time to warn your children about the dangers of playing in or near flood waters and stormwater drains. Queensland Fire and Rescue’s Swiftwater site can help you get this important message heard by your children or listen to flood stories told by young people. https://www.fire.qld.gov.au/communitysafety/swiftwater/default.asp http://www.emergency.qld.gov.au/redalert.asp?details=flood FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL School Wide Positive Behaviour Support This fortnight our focus has been for students to demonstrate responsible behaviour when the bell rings at the end of play. Specifically, the expectation is for students to be ready for learning and students have learnt the following routine: 1. Stop play. 2. Get a drink 3. Go to the toilet 4. Line up by the second bell Before school routine This week we are providing a gentle reminder to parents and students about the school’s expectations for students arriving at school before the 8:15am bell: 1. Wait in the Central Under Cover Area. Parents are welcome to wait with their child if they wish. 2. Sit down. 3. Talk quietly with friends. 4. When the bell rings at 8:15am, you can start playing or walk to your classroom. Have a great week! Yours in Learning, Melinda Gothmann, Deputy Principal SPECIAL ANZAC DAY ASSEMBLY WELCOME 10:15am on 24TH April All current serving armed force personnel are welcome to attend our special Anzac Day assembly in uniform and all ex-servicemen are welcome to wear their medals. BUDDHIST RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION Due to circumstances beyond our control Buddhist religion will commence in Term 2. FRESHIE’S ANNUAL FETE – August 8th th The fete may seem a long way away, but 8 August will be here before we know it. Why not be involved? This is a great opportunity to contribute to your child's school and get to know other parents. Volunteers have starting putting their hands up to convene stalls but more are needed. If you don't want to do it alone, grab a friend and co-convene your favourite stall. The P&C is also looking for people to join the fete team to be involved with the overall organising. It's a big job, but with many of us involved it will be less work and more fun. Please register your interest with the P&C office on 4055 2946. We'll be calling a fete meeting soon, so watch this space! All funds raised go to the Physical Education program and equipment. This sort of targeted fundraising is one of the things that make Freshwater SS special. Mrs Knight CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Harley Harmer-Wise and Tanner Salmond for being selected in the Barron River AFL team. They will now represent Barron River at the Peninsula AFL Championships to be held next Monday at Cazalys. Well done and good luck boys. LOTE The Japanese are great sports lovers. As well as traditional sports like sumo, karate and judo, baseball and soccer are very popular sports. Whole families tend to spend a day out watching a game so the children are familiarised with it from an early age. The nation is excitedly awaiting the 2020 Olympic Games which they are hosting in Tokyo. Email: [email protected] School Phone Number: 4058 9222 NRL DEVELOPMENT CUP The Freshwater team impressed all present once again at the NRL Development Cup with huge numbers and enthusiasm. However, numbers alone doesn’t guarantee a positive result, with Freshie outwitted by Caravonica 26-12 in the second round of the competition. With an inventive but untested defensive structure that consisted of most players standing much further back than they needed to, our red-and-black cousins from across the Barron were able to capitalise on our generosity. With yet more players playing league for the school for the first time, the Freshwater attack looked sleek and fun, creating three longrange tries, two to the irrepressible Ezrom Luki and one to the tireless Jesse Cragg. Awards went to Declan O’Shea and Joe Ince for never giving up, and special mention goes to Simeon Mosby for his determined and powerful running. The organisers of the NRL Development Cup have relayed to me how impressed they are with Freshwater’s attitude and numbers, which exceeds most other schools in the Cairns competition. Other schools have played with diminished numbers on the park, or indeed with no team at all, this season. Well done Green Machine! At time of writing, we wait with baited breath (and with one eye on the weather forecast) the release of the remainder of the competition draw.
