On the second Wednesday of every month, at American Legion Post 44 in Elephant Butte,
members of the American Legion family are joined by members of the community to pack
medium size flat rate boxes (or Care Packages) for deployed troops overseas. On Wednesday
March 11, Sierra Sam’s RV group donated $1000 to the project in memory of recently departed
Stephen A. Ross, former U.S. Navy Seal and American Legionnaire.
Through the efforts of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 44, nearly 8,000 boxes have been
shipped to our deployed men and women in uniform since 2003. It’s a little touch of home
for those brave military personnel fighting to preserve our freedom. Unit 44 could not have
continued this program for so long without the support of the community and most especially
the financial aid of Post 44 who pays the postage on all the boxes. Steve Ross was a dedicated
supporter of this program and was often seen on 2nd Wednesdays helping to pack care
packages.
