We are excited to offer you American Red Cross Blended Learning Lifeguarding course. Blended learning combines
online learning with on-site skills sessions where you will practice skills and demonstrate competency. Please plan to
complete the initial online lessons of your training at least two days prior to your first on-site skills session. When you
finish the online portion, print the certificate of completion and bring it to the skills session. If the online session is not
completed, you cannot attend the skills session. Please follow the registration process that will be outlined in an email that
will be sent to you.
Course purpose:
To teach lifeguards the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic
emergencies
Prerequisites:
* Be at least 15 years of age before the completion of the course.
* Swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl or breaststroke or a combination of the two.
Goggles may be used.
* Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of nine feet, retrieve a
10-pound brick, return to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point holding the
brick on your chest with two hands, exit the water without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute
and 40 seconds. Goggles are not allowed
* Tread water for two minutes with your legs only (hands under armpits)
Students must pass the prerequisites to be eligible to take the class.

Text/Supplies:
A resuscitation mask will be provided. Each student must have a copy of the American Red Cross
Lifeguarding Manual 2011

Cost:
There is a $35 fee by credit card to register for the Red Cross online training and an additional
$140 for full-time UPJ students or $165 for community students. The price includes a resuscitation
mask. There is an $85 non-refundable fee for students that do not pass the prerequisites.

Attendance is required at all sessions
Evaluation:
To receive the course completion certificates for the American Red Cross Lifeguarding and
CPR/AED for the Lifeguard, the participant must:
* Demonstrate competency in all required skills.
* Demonstrate competency in the final skills scenarios.
* Correctly answer at least 80% of the questions on the final written exams

Lifeguard

session which is scheduled for March 22, 2015 at 10:00 AM. Please follow the registration process outlined
below to gain access to the online portion:

If you do not already have an account, you will need to create one – click the “New User” link and
complete the information for the account – please make note of your username and password for future
access to the online content. Class Offering ID is: 03424425

The next step will be to click “Confirm.”

You will be asked to select a Payment. From the drop-down menu, select Credit Card as the method of
payment. The fee is $35. Enter your credit card information and click “Submit”.

You are now enrolled. You may launch the content immediately by clicking the “Go To My
Enrollments” button, then click the “Launch” link next to the appropriate course. Or, you may log in at a
later time.

To log in at a later time:
1. Click http://classes.redcross.org
2. Enter your username and password.
3. Go to the “My Learning” tab and the “My Enrollments” page will be displayed.
4. Select the “Launch” link for the appropriate course to view and take the content.

I have attached a course syllabus so you are clear which online lessons should be completed prior to each onsite skills session. Prior to the first on-site skill session on March 22, be sure to complete lessons the
introduction and Lessons 1-3. As you complete the online lessons, please print a progress report from the
Main Menu page of the online course. Bring a progress report to each on-site skills session to verify completion
of the online lessons.
