losing three wickets for less than 120 in the World
Cup quarter ﬁnals against Bangalesh today. Thanks to
a splendid partnership by Rohit Sharma and Suresh
Raina, Indians managed to put up a good score on the
board. After winning the toss, skipper Dhoni had no
hesitation in opting to bat. Dhawan, Kohli and Raina
were dismissed cheaply.
Meanwhile, a resurgent Pakistan would look to carry
forward the momentum when they take on formidable
hosts Australia in the third quarterﬁnal of the cricket
World Cup tomorrow.
On the back of four victories in a row, including one
against the mighty South African side, Pakistan recovered from two defeats to make the knockout stage.
Misbah-ul-haq has played a pivotal role in their
resurrection with his superlative batting effort and
the skipper now has the biggest challenge of the

Film distributors across Tamilnadu
will come together in Chennai on
Sunday as Rajinikanth starrer Lingaa
completes 100 days in few screens.
But it is not for any celebrations.
Yet, they have a reason to regroup.
Frustrated by the no response to
their repeated claims to get compensated for the alleged loss they
suffered screening the movie, they
have decided to lay siege to the actor’s house and hold a begging bowl
protest, ironically on the 100th day
of the movie.
Speaking to News Today, a ﬁlm distributor, said, ‘after several protests

Gadkari today wrote a letter to political leaders and social activists inviting them for an open debate on the
legislation.

Sonia Gandhi, who led the Opposition march to Rashtrapati Bhavan
against Land Bill on Tuesday, and
Anna Hazare, who has been leading
a farmers’ agitation.

Thalawady forest range and another

Five persons, including three college-going girls, were killed on the
spot and seven others injured when a
private bus collided with a mini van at
Keezhakudi in this district today.
Police said both vehicles collided
and then overturned. Four of those
killed were travelling in the bus. The
other person was the van driver. The
injured have been hospitalised.

to death near Porur

A man who allegedly killed another
by hitting him with a boulder was
arrested by the police this morning.
The incident which occurred near
Porur last night created tension in
the area.
According to sources, Karuppu (35)
from Thiruvannamalai recently joined
as a security guard at a private welding unit on the Poonamalee-Porur
highway.
It is reported that he was taken
as a replacement for Munusamy
(35) who was earlier sacked for
his conduct.
Police said, last night, Munusamy
met Karuppu and took him to a
nearby liquor shop, where they both
drank heavily.
Taking advantage of the situation, Munusamy took a boulder
lying nearby and hit Karuppu on
the head, killing him on the spot.
This morning, employees of the
shop who found him sitting beside
the dead body, informed the Mangadu police.
The body was sent to Kilpauk Medical College and
Hospital.
Police who arrested Munusamy
are now investigating if the two
had a previous enmity or the
murder was an act of revenge on
Karuppu for having taken his place
at the firm.

In Chennai, once there was a craze
in this game called ﬂight stimulator
where one could imagine oneself to
be the pilot and ﬂy high in the sky.
Now that has been made into reality where the last few days saw the
city people visiting the IIT-Madras
campus, to experience something
that was out of this world.
Birdly, the virtual reality flight
simulator was launched in Chennai
on 16 March in the IIT campus by
Swissnex India after it was kept in
Bengaluru from 10 to 13 March.
It was kept here for two days where
people booked their slots for the
once in a lifetime experience.
Birdly was conceived and designed in Switzerland recently. ‘The
experience of ﬂying on Birdly is quite
different from the ones hitherto experienced by mankind. While a pilot
can ﬂy the plane, he cannot become
the plane itself. Birdly changes that.
You become the bird, soaring and
diving at will’, says Salome, one of
the ofﬁcials.

Eight districts
picked for health
programme

Eight districts in the State have
been selected for ‘Mission Indhradhanush - 201’, the Central government’s immunisation programme.
Coimbatore, Kancheepuram, Madurai, Thiruvallur, Tiruchi, Tirunelveli, Vellore and Virudhunagar have
been selected in the ﬁrst phase of
the programme to be rolled out between March and June, according
to a Central government release.
Under the programme, immunisation for seven life-threatening
diseases (diphtheria, whooping
cough, tetanus, polio, tuberculosis,
measles and hepatitis B) will be
included. In select districts/States,
vaccination against Japanese
encephalitis and Haemophilus inﬂuenza type B will be provided. For
pregnant women, tetanus vaccine
would be administered. As many
as 201 districts in 28 States with
the highest number of partially vaccinated and unvaccinated children
under two years of age and pregnant women will be targeted.

R Krishnaswamy here on Wednesday. He was 79 and is survived by wife
and two sons.
A native of Harikesanallur in Tirunelveli district, Krishnaswamy, an advocate by training, was associated with
Narada Gana Sabha since its inception
in 1958.
He was the secretary of the sabha
for over 50 years. He was also one
of the trustees of G A Trust that established the Pandurangan temple in
Thennangur.
A classmate of veteran actor Cho
S Ramaswamy, Krishnaswamy was
responsible for introducing plays at
the sabha and also helped popularise
namasankeerthans during the music
seasons.

Is acid an easy
weapon to attack?

Breaking the misconception that
acid attacks are conﬁned to women,
an incident in the city wherein acid
meant for domestic use was thrown
on an elderly man and a youth have
shocked many.
A 48-year-old man and a youngster
sustained injuries at R K Nagar when
acid meant for use in toilets was
thrown at the former by a woman in
a ﬁt of rage.
It may be noted that a section incorporated by the Criminal Law Amendment Act 2013 provides for stringent
punishment for perpetrators, and
was meant to act as a deterrent to
the horrifying attacks.
However the increase in the
number of such cases in recent
years, seem otherwise.
Pragya Singh, an acid victim
said that the section which earlier
provided for imprisonment for not
less than 14 years, has now been
slashed to 10 years.
Although police ofﬁcials said that
the injuries are supercial as it was
diluted toilet-use acid, doctors said
that the aftermath of the attack is
generally unpredictable. ‘The physical pain might not be intense but the
mental agony the victim undergoes
will make them slip into that phase of
inferno,’ said a city- based psychiatrist Lakshmi Vaidyanathan.
Yesterday’s incident also questions
ofﬁcial negligence in regulating acid
sale.
‘Almost 80 per cent of the shopkeepers in the city are unaware
that such laws actually exists in the.
country and it is the easy accessibility
of acid that is accentuating the crime
rates,’ mentioned Pragya.
Moreover, not just in rural households, urban people too use acid to
clean their washrooms, thus making
the substance popular for domestic
purposes.
Social workers should play a
prominent role in creating awareneness about the drastic affects of
acid usage,’ Pragya added.

n a landmark judgment virtually redrawing the criteria for
declaring a community ‘backward’, the Supreme Court has
scrapped the UPA government’s notiﬁcation that declared Jats as
OBCs. Holding that the identiﬁcation of a group as ‘backward’
cannot be solely made on the basis of caste, a bench of Justice
Ranjan Gogoi and Justice R.F. Nariman signiﬁcantly said ‘new
practices, methods and yardsticks have to be continuously evolved,
moving away from caste-centric deﬁnition of backwardness’. The
most distressed in the society need to be identiﬁed for extension
of beneﬁts and palliative care. The recognition of the third gender
(transgenders/ eunuchs) as a socially and educationally backward
class of citizens by the apex court in April last year was a path ﬁnder,
the Bench said. In other words, the court is questioning the entire
basis of reservation formula that is in vogue as of now.
Just as well. For, reservations ---- much needed no doubt --- have
become entitlements for certain entrenched classes due to nondynamic stasis. Whereas society, for whichthe reservations are aimed
at, is in a constant state of ﬂux. But our political class still doesn’t
understand this. Playing vote-bank politics, they still harp on old
dog-eared arguments that ill serve the society at large. Take Union
Minister Birender Singh’s reaction post the Supreme Court ruling:
‘On the basis of social demarcation, if Yadavs and Gujjars can get
reservation, why not Jats?’
This is what, the court feels, needs a change. While calling for
thinking beyond caste for identifying socially and educationally
backward classes, it wants an overhaul of the reservation policies,
which allow advanced sections to beneﬁt merely because others
better placed are already in the list.
Quota in jobs may be a constitutional goal to undo the historical
injustice to backward castes, but the court has asked for redeﬁning
afﬁrmative action. Asserting that caste is a signiﬁcant factor but not
the sole reason for OBC status, it has suggested a periodic revision
of the list. The apex court has questioned a policy that keeps in
mind only historical injustice and ignores 21st century realities and
how some communities have advanced. In other words, a backward
community cannot remain backward forever.
The message to the State: Social groups which would be most
deserving must necessarily be a matter of continuous evolution.
Even the ruling NDA had backed the quota for Jats, who plan to
launch an agitation and ﬁle a review petition. A petition challenging
their inclusion in the special backward class in Haryana is already
pending before the Punjab and Haryana High Court. For long, it’s
been felt that if anyone needs special treatment, it is the economically
weak. The SC has laid down new norms that could mark a change,
even an end of quota for the rich among the Scheduled Castes and
the Scheduled Tribes.

has formulated NETAP (National
Employability Through Apprenticeship Program).
Established to increase corporate
participation, NETAP allows companies to appoint apprentices in
any trade or function at any location in India.
Further, while corporates have to
pay a stipend equivalent to the applicable unskilled minimum wage,
the spend qualifies as Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) contribution.
From an apprentice perspective,
NETAP offers opportunities across
22 high growth industries for apprenticeships across the country
for durations between three and 24
months, the staffing company said.
Govt allocates Rs 200 crore for agro-industry

launched a Rs 200 crore scheme
to set up a network of technology
and incubation centres to accelerate entrepreneurship and promote
start-ups for innovation and entrepreneurship in agro-industry.
‘The Scheme for Promotion of
Innovation, Entrepreneurship and
Agro-Industry will open vistas of
incubation landscape to the micro
segment of the vast rural economy’,
Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Minister Kalraj Mishra
said at the launch.
‘The scheme is designed to provide necessary skill set for setting
up business enterprises and also
to facilitate the market linkages
available to entrepreneurs and to
provide hand holding for a critical
period to ensure self sustainability’,
he said.

on Wednesday announced opening of an innovation
application centre in India to cater to the food industry
in the country. DuPont Nutrition & Health, a part of the
company, opened the centre in Gurgaon to serve food
industry in India, DuPont said in a statement. DuPont
Nutrition & Health president Matthias Heinzel said that
while the science of food is global, the taste and ﬂavors
of food are local.
‘As we develop those local solutions, we need to be
able to work closely with our local customers on foods
they are developing for their consumers’, he added.
The centre, which has capabilities to expand, will
initially employ 15 to 20 people by 2015-end.
‘Among the focus areas of the Innovation Application Center will be protective cultures for dahi and
yogurt, soy protein products, ice-cream and more
nutritious, Indian snacks and biscuits tailored to meet
the regional taste and texture expectations’, DuPont

LG eyes big sales
New Delhi, Mar 19 (PTI):
LG Electronics is targeting a turnover of Rs 23,500
crore this year in India as part of a strategy to make
the country among the South Korean major’s top three
markets in three years time.
The company’s Indian arm LG Electronics India will
also invest a minimum Rs 500 crore this year in research
and development.
‘India is amongst the top ﬁve global markets for LG
globally but we expect changes in the rankings in the
next three years. I want to bring India’s ranking as the
third largest market for LG’, LG Electronics India managing director Soon Kwon said.
At present, top ﬁve markets are the US, Korea, Brazil,
Russia and India.
Commenting on the company’s sales target in India,
he said: ‘This year we targeting a minimum of 25 per
cent increase in turnover at Rs 23,500 crore’.

‘Success of the
scheme will lie in

The partner institutions would be
provided Rs three lakh per innovative idea selected for nurturing.
For successful commercialisation
and mentoring, a grant of Rs one
lakh per year for three years subject to a maximum of Rs three lakh
would be given.
The scheme also entails Rs 62.50
crore fund for setting up of incubation centres by National Small
Industries Corporation or Khadi and
Village Industries Commission or
Coir Board or any other institution/
agency of the State or Central government. Besides, Rs 61.50 crore
has been earmarked for setting up
of technology incubation centres.
A sum of Rs two crore has been
allocated for creation, updation
and maintenance of database of
technology centres network while
Rs 17.75 crore will be spent on
capacity building, including awards,
surveys, studies, exposure visits
and engagement of consultants.

Economy to grow 7.7%
this year: OECD

India is poised to grow 7.7 per cent
this year and eight per cent in 2016
to become the ‘fastest growing major
economy’, according to think-tank
OECD.
In its interim economic assessment
report released on Wednesday ,
OECD said said that over the next
two years India is set to grow faster
than China, where growth is slowing towards the official target of
around seven per cent. However, the
grouping cautioned that maintaining
rapid growth would be a challenge

will invest 88 million euros on its four
plants in Germany by December-end
to enhance their competitiveness.
‘Germany is a good location for the
production of high value added products. With our investments, we aim to
further increase the competitiveness
of our sites’, ArcelorMittal Germany
Holding CEO Frank Schulz said in a

The company said around 10 million
euros will be invested in the remodeling of two strands at the steel mill

q Tricky Maths paper breaks down students

After many requests from students and parents, Central
Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has ﬁnally agreed
to set an expert committee for Class XII Mathematics paper,
which was held yesterday. This comes days after a tough
physics paper that had left parents anxious about the effect
it would have on their wards’ admissions to professional
courses.
What happened?

What to expect?
The Maths paper was extremely difﬁcult and
‘a torture for students’, leaving many in tears
and parents fuming.
Teachers termed the question paper one of
the toughest in recent times. Many students
left the examination room in tears saying that
the difﬁculty level had gone up considerably
when compared to the previous years. Students
conﬁded that no amount of preparation was
sufﬁcient to answer a paper as difﬁcult as this.
Many also agreed that the exam was much
more difﬁcult than the Physics paper too.
CBSE assured that the question
paper was made from CBSE and
NCERT books only. Questions are
not out of syllabus.
There were total 29 questions in 3
sections, namely A, B and C.
Section A: 10 questions:
1 mark each
Section B: 12 questions:
4 marks each
Section C: 7 questions:
6 marks each
Reports suggest that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attention will be sought in the issue.
The expert committee will test all tough questions in detail with
reference to model papers prepared by CBSE. If difﬁculty level
of the paper is higher than model papers, the Board will consider
holding ‘improvement exams’ for these students based on the
recommendations of the committee.
In a communication sent to schools, the CBSE chairman Vineet
Joshi said the subject experts will soon meet and review the question papers to ﬁnd out whether the questions given were from
outside the syllabus and in deviation of the ‘blueprint’ followed
by the Board with regard to difﬁculty-level of questions.
Mumbai schools to
teach ‘Bhagwad Gita’
Mumbai, Mar 19 (PTI):
All municipal schools in the city and
suburbs would teach ‘Bhagwad Gita’
to students in order to make them
more focused, boost their morale
and impart them knowledge about
spiritualism, a civic ofﬁcial has said.
‘We shall impart the knowledge of
‘Bhagwad Gita’ to students to make
them independent and sharpen their
power in decision making,’ Municipal
Corporation of Greater Mumbai’s
(MCGM) Deputy Municipal Commissioner Ramdas Bhausaheb said.
He was speaking at a prize distribution function of ‘Gita Champions League’ contest, organised by
International Society for Krishna
Consciousness (ISKCON) here on
15 March.
Ramdas said MCGM has 1,200
schools with a total strength of 4,78,000
students where the corporation spends
over Rs 3,500 crore every year to impart free education to children in nine
regional languages, a press release

Protests turn violent

Violent protests took place across
Karnataka today over the question
of a CBI probe into the death of IAS
ofﬁcer DK Ravi. In Bangalore, the
protesters of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad -- the student wing
of the BJP -- were lathicharged by
the police. In Tumkur too, the mob
clashed with the police.
The opposition BJP and JDS,
which are holding an indefinite
protest at the assembly, said they
will take their demand to Governor
Vajubhai Vala. The protesting lawmakers have spent two consecutive
nights at the Assembly.
Sources told that the Union home
minister, Rajnath Singh, has spoken
to Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah and advised that the state opt
for a CBI inquiry.
Despite the rising public anger,
Siddaramaiah has said no to the
demand for a CBI probe from various
quarters. While an online petition to
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has
been signed by 13.5 lakh people,
including the state’s IAS ofﬁcers, the
lawmakers of opposition BJP and
the JDS are on an indeﬁnite dharna
at the state assembly.
Yesterday, Union Law Minister
Sadananda Gowda, who was also
a former chief minister of Karnataka,
met the Home Minister about the
issue, and called for a CBI probe.
The case is currently with the state
Criminal Investigation Department,
which, Siddaramaiah said, was ‘perfectly capable’ of handling it.
Karnataka’s Kolar, where Mr Ravi

widespread protests after his death,
which the police said, was a prima

Stockton, Mar 19 (AP):
An apparent drive-by shooting at a
Stockton convenience store left three
people dead and four wounded in what
a police ofﬁcial called one of the worst
mass shootings in the city’s recent
history.
Ofﬁcer Joe Silva also said the shooting
in the inland port city was in a crimeridden area known for drug deals and
is likely gang-related. Violence has
rocked Stockton, which was hit hard by
the economic downturn and declared
bankruptcy in 2012. Ofﬁcials with the
San Joaquin County on Wednesday
said 20-year-old Aliyah Taylor and
27-year-old Arniska Lofton died in the
drive-by shooting. The male victim was
identiﬁed as 23-year-old Kabin Kennebrew. All were from Stockton. Four men
in their 20s and 30s were found inside
the small market and taken to hospitals.
The victims ages 24, 25, 32 and 38 are
expected to survive, Silva said.
No arrests have been made, and it
is not yet known if there were multiple
shooters. Police are interviewing witnesses, some of whom said they heard
up to 40 gunshots. Dozens of people
gathered in the area after the shooting,
and additional ofﬁcers were called in to
help control the crowd.

YSR Congress were today suspended
from the Andhra Pradesh Assembly
for three days for ‘unruly behaviour’ in
the House.
Speaker K Sivaprasad Rao announced the action after Legislative Affairs Minister Y Ramakrishnudu moved
a resolution to this effect.
The suspended MLAs (as also other
members of the party) continued to
be in the Well of the House despite
appeals to vacate the House by the
Speaker, who then summoned Marshals. The MLAs, who raised slogans
against the Speaker, refused to relent
and were bodily lifted and taken out.

plea seeking directions to the Election Commission of India (ECI) for
cancellation of the Aam Aadmi Party’s
registration for allegedly using forged
documents.
‘(The) petition is dismissed,’ a bench
of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice
R S Endlaw said.
The judgement came on the plea of
Hans Raj Jain, who had sought the
cancellation alleging that the ‘registration of AAP was allowed (by the
ECI) in a hurried manner on the basis
of false and fabricated documents
without making any proper enquiries’.
Jain had claimed there were discrepancies in residential addresses
given by some AAP members in their
afﬁdavits when compared to the addresses given in their voter identity
cards or income tax returns.
