MARCH 21 & 22, 2015 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT A Desire to See Jesus In John 12:20-33, we are told that some Greeks, who have come to worship during the Passover festival, have approached Philip, the Apostle. “Sir, we would see Jesus.” A simple enough sentence and yet it contains both respect and a desire. These Greeks were Gentiles who believed in God, yet they were excluded from many of the Jewish religious festivals. Their desire to see Jesus is certainly understandable. Rather than preaching that heaven is open only to a privileged few, Jesus has been preaching that forgiveness and salvation are available to all those who believe. Even though the Priests and Pharisees have rejected Jesus as the Messiah, these Greeks still treat Philip with the respect becoming a devoted disciple of Christ. In this week’s Gospel, Jesus says, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified.” Jesus predicts His death and asks God to glorify His name. God responds by saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.” As Christians, we too are called to treat all those who follow Jesus, especially those who have received the Sacrament of Holy Orders, with respect. Just as the Greeks did, it is not unreasonable to ask those closest to Jesus, the successors to His apostles, to lead us to Him. There is an irony in that it is the Greeks who seek Jesus yet His own people, the Jews, will ultimately turn on Him. In the previous week’s Gospel reading, we hear that Jesus has raised Lazarus from the dead. Even this miracle is not enough to convince the non-believers that the Son of God is amongst them. For those who choose not to believe, no amount of miracles will allow them to see Jesus as He really is. Although it has been two thousand years since His death and resurrection, we should still strive to “see” Jesus. In Matthew 25:40 Jesus says, “… just as you did to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did to me.” All we have to do is look at our neighbours, or even strangers, and if we look, we will see Jesus. All we need to do is examine the gifts bestowed upon us, and know that they are from Jesus.
