Fifth Sunday of Lent, March 22, 2015
Dear Parishioners,
On this Fifth Sunday of Lent, the Church is setting the stage for the upcoming events in the life of Jesus. Throughout the gospel of John, Jesus would often
say when asked to do something, that “His hour had not yet come.” What we find
in our gospel for this weekend is Jesus praying, “I am troubled now. Yet what
should I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour?’ But it was for this purpose that I
came to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” In this beautiful gospel, the hour
for which Jesus came is now being fulfilled in the events of His life presented to us
by our Church in the gospel for the next two weeks. These events include Jesus
being ridiculed and criticized, with many differing people plotting to destroy Him.
We will find Jesus being betrayed by friends, denied by others, and then finally
being nailed to the cross. “The hour for which Jesus came” will be presented to us
in the passion and death narratives for the next weeks. Faced with this hour, we
can readily understand how “troubled Jesus was.” But he prefaced this event in
this same gospel as He explained to His apostles and us, “unless a grain of wheat
falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.” And the fruit of Jesus’ death is the greatest gift to us, namely,
the new life in the resurrection. Through the events that we will celebrate in the
next two weeks, Jesus truly fulfills His prayer, namely, to “glorify the Father’s
name in perfect obedience.’
For those of you who will be at the 9:30 a.m. Mass, we will be celebrating
the third and final Scrutiny for our Elect and Candidates. The readings for this
Mass are taken from cycle A and come right after the normal readings. In our gospel for this Mass, we find the story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead. In this
story presented to us we find Jesus restoring life to the dead body of His friend,
Lazarus. But the Church sees a deeper significance for us who are baptized and for
those who await baptism. The significance is that through baptism, we have died
with Christ and rose with Him. Because of that experience, we no longer need to
fear death for Jesus has conquered sin and death and given to all of us the opportunity to share His life forever. Through all of our lives may each of us continue to
glorify God by dying daily to ourselves so that daily His life and grace will fill us.
I want to thank all in our parish who participated last weekend in the initiative encouraged by Pope Francis called 24 hours for the Lord. Your presence and
prayer were very inspiring to me as your pastor. Thanks for coming at all hours to
pray before the Blessed Sacrament.
Our next two reconciliation services for the people of Quincy will be this
Sunday, March 22nd, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Francis Church; and the next Sunday,
March 29th, also at 3:00 p.m. here at St. Peter Church. I invite our parishioners to
come and celebrate the gift of forgiveness and mercy that is being offered at this
time as we prepare our lives for Easter. Lent without this Sacrament of Reconciliation is incomplete. Please use this time offered.

CD Of The Week
Fan or Follower? In this talk, Jeff Cavins shares
how he has come to see that Jesus wants us to surrender
every bit of our own comfort to follow Him. There are many
fans of Jesus in this world, but we are called to be His disciples. The response to the cd’s last weekend was excellent.
More cd’s have been ordered and should be here soon.

I also encourage you to join us for the annual
“red beans and rice dinner” sponsored by the social concerns committee of our parish. Besides a simple dinner,
we will also be enlightened by a special speaker. A free
will offering will be accepted and proceeds will benefit
Catholic Relief Services—Operation Rice Bowl. This
simple meal of fellowship begins the events of Holy
Week for us. Speaking of your rice bowls, I ask you to
turn them in by Easter. Either put the proceeds in an

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE: It was Palm Sun- Difference
day and, because of a sore throat, five-year-old Johnny
stayed home from Church with a sitter. When the family returned home, they were carrying several Palm
branches. The boy asked what they were for. “People
held them over Jesus’ head as He walked by.”
`
“Wouldn’t you know it,” little Johnny fumed,
“the one Sunday I don’t go, He shows up.”
Little Johnny asked his grandmother how old she was.
Grandma answered, “39 and holding.” Johnny thought
for a moment and then said, “how old would you be if
you let go?”
