Building the Domestic Church The Family Fully Alive Psalm of the Month (Psalm 78) The family who prays together, stays together Pray this psalm every Sunday in at your family prayer space. Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth! I will open my mouth in a parable; things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders which he has wrought. He established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children; that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments. On the last Sunday of the month, discuss as a family which verse stood out most for each family member. St. Michael Medals Do you have a family member or friend serving in the military? You can request a St. Michael Medal to be sent to them from our State Chaplain. There is no cost to you or the military service person. The military person does not need to be a Knight of Columbus or Catholic. Send the name of the person in the military, their rank, branch of service, and address to State Chaplain Fr. Ken O’Hotto, and he will send the medal (and a prayer book if requested) directly to the serviceman/woman. Build a Strong Council Father Michael J. McGivney Guild The National Catholic Committee on Scouting (NCCS) has a Michael McGivney Patch as part of their “Footsteps of American Saints” program. This program is one of the religious activity patches created by the NCCS. The NCCS states these programs can be used by “groups, families, schools, or any Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venturer, Girl Scout, American Heritage Girl, or Campfire USA.” If you have any of these programs in your community, especially if they are sponsored by your local Catholic parishes, please contact them and encourage them to run an event for their youth members to earn the Michael McGivney Patch. This is a great opportunity to encourage more people learn about our Founder! You can familiarize yourself with the requirements for this program at http:// www.nccs-bsa.org/activities/fas-FrMichaelMcGivney.php. One of the requirements is “Invite an officer of a local Knights of Columbus council to speak to your group.” This is a perfect opportunity to get an articulate member of your council in the door to talk to a group of young people about what the Knights of Columbus is and what we do! You might consider having your council pay for the patches for participants – they are easy to order either by printing the order form from http://www.nccs-bsa.org/pdf/NCCS%20Patch%20Order%20Form.pdf, or ordering online from http://nccspatches.kintera.org/BSA. While you are at it, see how many of you can meet the first requirements for the patch – answering where and when Father McGivney was born, and how long he lived. We should aim for every Knight knowing the answer: He was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on August 12, 1852, and lived for 38 years. Join the Father McGivney Guild and support the cause of canonization of our Founder! To sign up, please visit http://www.fathermcgivney.org/ or send your name and address to The Father McGivney Guild, 1 Columbus Plaza, New Haven, CT 06510. Thank you! The Catholic Difference Knights of Columbus Insurance Catholic Values Ethical Sales & Investing Service to the Church and the Community Is that Form 100 in your pocket or billfold? Always have one handy! Father Michael J. McGivney Guild Have you ever heard of the different classes of relics? Relics are physical objects associated with the lives of the Saints. Catholics throughout history have venerated relics as a way of connecting with and asking the intercession of various Saints. First Class r elics ar e the bodies of Saints (objects involved in the Passion of Christ, such as fragments of the True Cross, are also first class relics). Making a pilgrimage to the burial place of a Saint is a traditional Catholic practice. The Saint is in Heaven, and can hear us from anywhere, but as the Creed says, we believe in the resurrection of the body. A human person is by nature both body and soul, and at the resurrection those will be re-united. So the Saint is particularly present where his body is, and we honor them by visiting those places. Second Class r elics ar e items used by the Saint – often things they wore during their life or things they used for a religious purpose, such as a rosary. Third Class r elics ar e items which ar e touched to a fir st or second class r elic with the intention of making them a devotional object. In the case of Venerable Father Michael McGivney, the Founder of the Knights of Columbus: ¨ He is buried at Saint Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut. When he is canonized, that will be the first class relic, and pilgrimages there will be appropriate. ¨ Some parishes, councils, and individuals have been given a reliquary with a small fragment of the cassock he was buried in. These will be second class relics when he is canonized. ¨ Everyone who joins the Father McGivney Guild receives a prayer card that was touched to Father McGivney’s body. These can be identified by a sticker on the back which states that this was done. These will be third class relics of Father McGivney. Why does this matter? As we saw last month, the only thing remaining for Venerable Father Michael McGivney to be recognized as a Saint is for the Holy Father to recognize miracles as having occurred through his intercession. For the Pope to know a miracle took place through the intercession of a particular person, there has to be evidence of a connection between the miracle and that possible Saint. Association of a relic of the person with the healing is a great way to show that connection. So please join the Father McGivney Guild, and if any member of your family or council is in need of a miraculous healing, please take your third class relic prayer card to that person. If God chooses to then heal them, that might be the sign which also show God wants us to know Father McGivney is a Saint! Not a member yet? Take this opportunity to fill out the registration form and submit your petitions. The only thing it cost you is 2 minutes of your time at http://www.fathermcgivney.org/en/index.html Fundraising for People with Intellectual Disabilities As your council works to improve the quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities, please remember that your everyday speech, council bulletins, committee reports, posters, and flyers should be accurate and considerate when referring to people with disabilities. ¨ DO talk or write about people with intellectual disabilities (do NOT use other terms to describe them). ¨ DO treat adults with intellectual disabilities as adults (NOT as children). ¨ Use positive language. MOST IMPORTANTLY, speak or wr ite about these individuals with the r espect all human beings deserve. Keep in mind that how you refer to people can have a great impact on the way others perceive them. Supreme has asked us to remind councils that the Knights of Columbus has no official tie to Tootsie Rolls or their manufacturer. References to this program should highlight the good the money does, not advertise a candy. It is strongly recommended that this project be promoted as the “Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities” rather than the “Tootsie Roll Drive.” MN Knightly News March 2015 Supplement page 7 Congratulations to the following councils who are on track for Star Council To achieve Star Council, a council must qualify for the Father McGivney, Founder’s, and Columbian Awards. Crystal/Robbinsdale Council 2656 held a wheelchair drive on October 25th and 26th, at the Catholic Community of St. Joseph in New Hope, MN and on November 8th & 9th at St Raphael's Church in Crystal, MN. They purchased a juvenile size wheelchair to use in their presentations, and two council members made the presentations at both churches. The Pastors allowed them to put a basket in front of the altar and the parishioners came up and placed their donations in the baskets. When they decided to take on this project, they had no idea what the response would be and were totally overwhelmed by the parishioners’ generosity. As a result, they collected $6664 (enough money to sent to Dan Moberg to purchase of 42 wheelchairs). They have a third Wheelchair Drive pending in March or April at the Sacred Heart Church in Robbinsdale, MN. Then they plan to donate the juvenile wheelchair to a needy child. Exciting Group! Military Chaplain Scholarship Program We, as knights, proudly proclaim our dedicated stand in solidarity with our priests and our support of their unselfish service to the men and women in our Armed Forces. Through your generosity to the Knights of Columbus Military Chaplains Scholarship Program, we will continue to help provide our military servicemen and women and their families with dedicated and devoted priests who will follow in the tradition of their predecessors, giving all for the spiritual welfare of their comrades in arms. Councils must conduct and report at least four major programs in each of the Service Program Categories: Church, Community, Council, Family, Culture of Life, and Youth. This year, you can fulfill this goal in 3 different ways: 1. Hold 4 programs in each of the 6 categories (24 programs) 2. Hold 6 Featured Programs (1 per category) 3. 4 programs reported in some categories and Featured Programs for others What is a Featured Program? It is a program (chosen by Supreme), and if you fulfill ALL the requirements for that program, it will count as completing 4 programs in that category. Check out this year’s Featured Programs Church - RSVP Community - Habitat for Humanity OR Global Wheelchair Mission Council - Special Olympics Family - Food for Families Program Culture of Life - Ultrasound Initiative OR March for Life Youth - Coats for Kids Remember, these are all great programs, and if your council is unable to fulfill ALL the requirements it will not count as a Featured Program, but it will still count as one of the 4 programs you need for that category. Also remember, many programs you conduct can fit into more than one category, but may only be listed under one category each year. For example, a paper drive or pancake breakfast could fit many places depending on where the funds raised were donated. Your Family of the Month Program would fit under either Family or Council Activities, but you can only put it under one category on the form. Also, if you are using a Featured Program to count as completing 4 programs, be sure to mark it as a Featured Program on Form SP-7 and attach all accompanying paperwork. Thank you for all your sacrifice and generosity! It is also the day when we celebrate Jesus becoming human, the Incarnation. Incarnation means becoming flesh. The sanctifying of human life not only by God joining Himself to that human life. but joining Himself to it as an unborn baby in every stage of that journey, as an embryo, and as a fetus. So, we celebrate the Annunciation in a special way as a day of life. The year 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of Evangelium Vitae (March 25, 1995) also known as The Gospel of Life; published by Pope John Paul II on the topic of abortion and our duty to defend children in the womb. In our endeavor to create a culture of life, we are inspired and sustained by the confidence that comes from knowing that the Gospel of Life, like the Kingdom of God itself, is growing and producing abundant fruit. When honoring this feast day and the Day of the Unborn Child, councils are encouraged to promote a prolife mass, rosary service, or adoration hour celebrating the culture of life. This is a time for family, friends, and brother knights to join together in prayer that speaks to our never ending commitment to unborn children and their mothers. It is suggested that councils have masses offered for the intention of the Day of the Unborn. A great prayer for life is urgently needed. Our prayers will call for an end to abortion and the culture of death. We pray that the sanctity of life be restored in our country and throughout the world. Councils, assemblies, and circles should distribute Prayer for the Unborn (prayer card #4665) and the People of Life (brochure #4795). They are available at (203) 752-4403 with your name, council number, address, telephone number and the exact number you need. For further information on this or any Culture of Life program please contact me at [email protected]. A prayer service or a mass said for the unborn will fulfill one Culture of Life program on form SP-7. * Knights of Columbus Safe Environment Program * The cost is $20 per event (Singles, Doubles, & Team); The Safe Environment Program went into effect on January 5, 2015.
