“Still Here: Embracing Aging, Changing, and
Dying” by Ram Dass
Join in with Harriet Porter, LCSW, to discuss the work
of author Ram Dass, a world famous spiritual seeker and
teacher since the 1960’s. In this book, Dass shares his wakeup call at age 65 when he experienced a debilitating stroke.
He explores the awakening process as well as the cultural
taboos surrounding aging and death. Always his goal has
been to find meaning, contentment, and joy -- in life and even in death.
After the stroke he tried to take control of his life, to let go of the ego’s
fear inducing grip, and embrace an awareness and awakening of his soul
instead. He believes we have the power to age in whatever way we choose,
and to view it as a process of loss and gain.

A Note from the Director
even mourn a loss. She returns to her small Midwestern hometown at
a time when her own life seems about to fall apart. The bakery she
opens there is perfect, intimate, just what she’s always dreamed of--and
yet, as she meets her new customers, Neely has a sense of secrets, some
dark, some with tempting possibilities. A recurring flavor of alarming
intensity signals to her perfect palate a long-ago story that must be
told.

Religion & Film: Art, Equity, and Ethics
Join us as Dr. Sara Anson Vaux, Religion & Film Professor from
Northwestern University, marks another step toward defining
“Religion and Film,” a slippery hybrid that one moment encompasses
Carl-Theodor Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) and Andrei
Tarkovsky’s Stalker (1979), and another moment turns toward the
contemporary anguish of Calvary, Of Gods and Men, and Gone Girl.
To spotlight the targeted directors’ engagement with art, equity, and
ethics, we will examine a sampling of films that offer fresh perspectives
on the ways Religion and Film intersect: Ida (just won Best Foreign
Film at Oscars), The Kid on a Bike (Le Gamin au Velo), and Two Days/
One Night (Pawel Pawlikowski).
