Swansea Track 10
Cushway’s prototype for a record-breaking vehicle,
designed in collaboration with UWTSD’s Institute
of Sustainable / Automotive Design Department
is made from clay, possibly the material least
designed for speed. However, clay spearheaded
the industrial revolution and has been at the
forefront of great technical advancements. Despite
its slow nature, clay has been essential in our need
for speed and human achievement. Based in our
Information Hub in the Quadrant Shopping Centre,
this prototype for speed is stopped in its tracks as it
slowly crumbles away whilst on display.
The ghost town of Swansea sits on the edge
of Death Valley, California. Once a mining
boomtown in the 1860’s, little of the town
remains apart from a memorial. The connections
with the city go beyond the place name, as it
commemorates the hundreds of Welsh workers
who made the trip to America and beyond to
set up and run mines and foundries. Dolphin has
recreated this memorial and placed it outside the
Civic Centre, with ramshackle ‘Wild West’ signs
made by local schools pointing to other Swansea
namesakes across the world.
Mae prototeip Cushway o gerbyd i dorri record
cyflymder tir, a gynlluniwyd ar y cyd â Sefydliad
Dylunio Cynaliadwy UWTSD, wedi ei wneud o
glai, sef, o bosibl, y deunydd lleiaf addas ei gynllun
ar gyfer cyflymder. Fodd bynnag, clai oedd prif
ysgogydd y chwyldro diwydiannol ac mae wedi
bod ar flaen y gad o ran datblygiadau technegol
mawr. Er gwaethaf ei natur araf, bu clai yn rhan
annatod o’n hymchwil am gyflymder a chyflawniad
dynol. Wedi ei leoli yn ein Canolfan Wybodaeth yng
Nghanolfan Siopa’r Quadrant, mae’r prototeip hwn,
ac yntau ar drywydd cyflymder, wedi ei stopio’n
stond, ac mae’n araf ddadfeilio tra caiff ei arddangos.
Tref anghyfannedd ar ymyl Death Valley,
California yw Swansea. Roedd unwaith yn dref
lofaol ffyniannus yn yr 1860au, bellach ychydig
iawn o’r dref sydd ar ôl ar wahân i’r gofeb. Mae’r
cysylltiadau â’r ddinas yn mynd y tu hwnt i enw’r
lle, gan ei fod yn coffáu’r cannoedd o weithwyr o
Gymru a deithiodd i America a thu hwnt i sefydlu
a rhedeg pyllau glo a ffowndrïau. Mae Dolphin
wedi ail-greu’r gofeb hon a’i lleoli y tu allan i’r
Ganolfan Ddinesig, gydag arwyddion sigledig
yn steil y ‘Gorllewin Gwyllt’ wedi eu gwneud gan
ysgolion lleol yn pwyntio at lefydd eraill o’r enw
Swansea ar draws y byd.

Concrete Dreams
High up in the Civic Centre floats a huge cluster
of helium filled balloons, each printed with a
picture of the iconic building. As the temperature
changes and passing visitors create shifts in the
air, the balloons gently shimmer and dip around
the atrium. Speed both celebrates and laments
the passing of the building; Brutalist architecture;
the loss of an equally loved and maligned
building and what the future holds for the city. A
limited amount of free balloons will be available
from the Information Hub in the Quadrant

Michael Stumpf
Amphitheatre Amffitheatr
The Future Is A Process, Objects Converse
On A Matter of Mutual Concern
Michael Stumpf brings an almost absurdist,
punk rock approach to public art. Using the
Amphitheatre as a setting, his three large
sculptures references monolithic public
art, industry and music. A tap-dancing
boulder, One of Us, a coffeemaker, Stovetop,
and a meteorite-like object, Pink Moon,
temporarily occupy the Amphitheatre’s
stage and seating, inviting you to take a seat
or stand to join them in a debate about the
nature of their ‘thing-ness’.
Daw Michael Stumpf a dull gweithredu sydd
bron yn absẃrd, ac agwedd pync roc i fyd
celfyddyd gyhoeddus. Gan ddefnyddio’r
Amffitheatr fel lleoliad, mae ei dri cherflun
mawr yn cyfeirio at gelfyddyd gyhoeddus,
diwydiant a cherddoriaeth fonolithig. Dros
dro, mae clogfaen sy’n dawnsio tap, One
of Us, peiriant coffi, Stovetop, a gwrthrych
tebyg i awyrfaen, Pink Moon, yn meddiannu
llwyfan a seddau’r Amffitheatr, gan eich
gwahodd i eistedd neu sefyll i ymuno â hwy
mewn dadl ynghylch natur ‘petheu-dra’.

Michelangelo, Ping-Pong, Ambition,
Sibelius, and Girls…
DJ Roberts’ neon artwork uses a line from a
Dylan Thomas radio broadcast, Return Journey
to Swansea. In the broadcast, Thomas tells of his
return to Swansea in search of his former self,
growing up in the town. We find him at one
stage in the Kardomah Café with his friends,
putting the world to rights. They talk about
‘music and poetry and painting and politics‘.
They talk about ‘communism, symbolism,
Bradman and Braque‘. They talk about
“Michelangelo, ping-pong, ambition, Sibelius,
and girls…”
Mae gwaith celf neon DJ Roberts yn defnyddio

Return Journey to Swansea. Yn y darllediad, mae
Dylan Thomas yn sôn amdano’n dychwelyd i
Abertawe ar drywydd ei fywyd ei hun yn cael
ei fagu yn y dref. Fe’i gwelwn ar un pwynt yng
nghaffi Karomah gyda’i ffrindiau, yn rhoi’r byd
yn ei le. Maen nhw’n siarad am ‘gerddoriaeth
a barddoniaeth ac arlunio a gwleidyddiaeth’.
Maen nhw’n siarad am ‘gomiwnyddiaeth,

More Poetry is Needed
A simple statement in black and white,
More Poetry Is Needed sits on a large wall to
the rear of the Quadrant Shopping Centre.
Greeting visitors to the city centre, Deller’s
plaintive request gets straight to the point.
Everybody and everywhere could do with
more poetry. Writer Rachel Trezise has
responded by writing 6 micro-fictions to be
distributed across bars and cafes in Swansea.
Datganiad syml mewn du a gwyn yw

affectionate nods to Swansea. Fowler’s
artwork is part of Art Across The High Street,

We Are Here
Sean Puleston reconnects the High Street
with the heart of Swansea, being inspired
by the city’s dynamic skyline as well as
its worldwide reputation for excellence
in stained glass. Puleston recognises that
there is much to celebrate about Swansea’s
future prospects, which he empathises with
through the inclusive statement “We Are
Here”, reaffirming our shared local and global
significance.
Mae Sean Puleston yn ailgysylltu’r Stryd
Fawr gyda chalon Abertawe, wedi’i ysbrydoli
gan nenlinell ddynamig y ddinas yn ogystal
â’r enw da byd eang am ragoriaeth gwydr
lliw. Mae Puleston yn cydnabod bod llawer
i’w ddathlu am ragolygon Abertawe yn y
dyfodol, ac mae’n pwysleisio hynny gyda’r
datganiad cynhwysfawr, “We are Here”, sy’n
ail-gadarnhau ein harwyddocâd lleol a bydeang.

Terpsichorean Trio
Rik Bennett’s mural on the High Street
captures the essence of what the street
once was, referencing the many dance
halls, pubs and clubs that once thrived
here. By doing so, Bennett is adding to the
current reawakening that is taking place
on this street, creating a new vibrancy and
contributing positively to its regeneration
and potential future.
Mae murlun Rik Bennett ar y Stryd Fawr
yn dal hanfod yr hyn yr oedd y stryd yn
arfer bod, gan gyfeirio at y neuaddau
dawns, y tafarnau a’r clybiau niferus a oedd
unwaith yn ffynnu yma. Wrth wneud hyn,
mae Bennett yn ychwanegu at ailddeffro’r
stryd sy’n digwydd ar hyn o bryd, gan greu
bywiogrwydd newydd sy’n cyfrannu’n
gadarnhaol at ei adfywiad a’i ddyfodol
posibl.

Bedwyr Williams commemorates the
cage-fighters dressed in drag for a night

adversity and abuse. Captured on CCTV,
the duo’s actions became an Internet hit.
Williams pays tribute by casting the duos’
high heel footprints into brass and setting
them into the pavement where the incident
occurred, creating a lasting symbol against
harassment and persecution.
Mae Bedwyr Williams yn coffáu’r ymladdwyr

pâr yn enwog dros y rhyngrwyd. Mae
Williams yn talu teyrnged drwy osod ôltraed sodlau uchel y pâr mewn efydd a’u

greu symbol parhaus yn erbyn aflonyddu ac

Dylan’s Pencil
During Mark Folds’ research visit to
Cwmdonkin Park, he was inspired by the
presence of a large tree stump standing
at over 30 foot high, as well as the long
association the park has with the poet
Dylan Thomas. Dylan’s Pencil aims to engage
people in thinking that something amazing,
such as Dylan Thomas’ poetry, emerged
from something so basic in this place.
Yn ystod ymweliad ymchwil Mark Folds
â Pharc Cwmdoncyn, cafodd ei ysbrydoli
gan bresenoldeb bonyn coeden mawr
dros 30 troedfedd, yn ogystal â chysylltiad
hir y parc â Dylan Thomas, y bardd. Nod

Under A Visiting African Sun, is a graphic
representation of the James Harris Snr
painting Swansea Bay in Stormy Weather.
An African cigarette logo provides the red
sun; the over looking ospreys are a Swansea

intimates the presence of a character
from Dylan Thomas’s Under Milkwood. All
these elements come together to create a
landscape, which is both local and disparate.

Tawe Mega Poem
Originally commissioned in 2014, the
Tawe Mega Poem continues to grow with
thousands of online contributions. We
want the public to get involved in writing
the world’s longest, ongoing online poem.
Inspired by the Dylan Thomas Centenary,
Swansea and the artworks and workshops
in Art Across The City, we want you to add
your own lines. Award winning poet Rhian
Edwards has written the opening lines and
now it’s up to you to be inspired. We are
looking for contributions from all over the
world so send us your poetry!
