March 30, 2015
The P&F Association warmly invites you to the annual Father & Son Breakfast at 7.30am at the front of the College
(Brimson Centre, if raining). All details enclosed in the newsletter.
OPEN DAY
Last Friday we opened our doors to the wider community to showcase the College, the staff and the students. Despite
the inclement weather, we welcomed over 1000 guests, who had the opportunity to tour the College, to view our current
facilities and to see the concept designs for the new Clancy Wing, Good Counsel Primary School, underground car park, the
Hippodrome Canteen Facility and Uniform Shop.
Our students were the best advocates for the College at Open Day. Their Augustinian welcome and enthusiasm, displayed
to our visitors, highlighted the Augustinian tradition and was a testimony to what makes St Augustine’s College different
from other schools. My thanks to all boys who attended and supported Open Day, especially those who acted as tour
guides, participated in the Performing Arts presentations and sport displays – your pride and commitment to the College is
acknowledged and very much appreciated.
My thanks also to the dedicated staff, teaching and administrative, who worked tirelessly leading up to Open Day to
professionally showcase the College to the public, especially Lianne Williams (Marketing Manager), Philippa Sherwood
(College Registrar) and their teams. Thank you to David Anglicas, Greg Yeates and the Maintenance and Grounds teams
who had the College looking at its best.
As a result of Open Day, we are receiving numerous enrolment applications for places for Years 5 and 7 in 2017. I would
like to remind those parents who are interested in enrolling their sons into this intake period, to submit all documentation
by March 27, 2015. We already have a large number of enrolment applications, for siblings, on file for consideration. In
order for us to consider these applications, please forward up to date academic reports, faith commitment forms and any
other relevant documentation to support the application. For further information regarding the enrolment process please
contact College Registrar, Philippa Sherwood on 99388223 or via email [email protected].
COLLEGE REGISTRATION AND ACCREDITATION BY BOSTES
We have been notified by BOSTES (Board of Studies Teaching & Educational Standards NSW) that our submission for
the Registration and Accreditation of the College, for the period, 2016-2020, is to be lodged by March 31, 2015. The site
inspection of College documents, by the BOSTES inspectors, will take place on July 30, 2015. The BOSTES will look at the
following areas to satisfy the compliance for registration: - Staff, Curriculum, Premises and Buildings, Facilities, Safe and
Supportive Environment, Discipline, Attendance, Management, Operation and Governance of the school and Educational
Financial Reporting. I will present more information regarding our application over coming weeks.
COLLINGWOOD COLLEGE, VANCOUVER, CANADA
We were delighted to welcome and host students and staff from Collingwood College in Vancouver, Canada, who are
visiting Australia as part of a world rugby tour. Last Monday, at Rat Park, we witnessed a wonderful display of entertaining
rugby and fine sportsmanship when our rugby teams played Collingwood College.
I would like to especially thank those families who opened their homes and welcomed the Canadian billets.
Sporting tours, such as these, cannot occur without the support of host families and I extend my sincere appreciation for
your hospitality.
We are very fortunate to
be able to provide the
opportunity for our boys to
participate in international
sporting tours and educational
exchanges.
St Augustine’s students have
always been welcomed into
overseas school communities
and it is wonderful that our
community is generous in
reciprocation. The boys usually
make lifelong friends from
these tours and exchanges
and we look forward to our
community continuing to
support such opportunities.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to the College ISA swimming tea who were runners up to Oakhill College last Wednesday at the Sydney Aquatic
Centre at Homebush. The Juniors were placed first in Division 1, the Intermediate and Senior boys were placed second in Division 1 –
excellent results.
Last weekend our rowers travelled to Canberra to compete in the ACT Championships. Congratulations to all boys who participated.
We had outstanding individual and team results with the boys bringing home a collection of gold, silver and bronze medals – well
done boys. My thanks to Thomas Jubb and Barney Potts who prepared the boys for the Championships and accompanied them to
Canberra.
Prayers…
We were saddened to hear of the recent cyclone devastation in Vanuatu. There has been a trail of destruction left behind as many
villages have been destroyed and people have no water and no power. Vanuatu has a population of 267,000 spread over 65 islands.
At least half of the population, around 130,000, has been affected by this recent tragedy. Please pray for those who have died, for
those who have lost loved ones, the injured, the homeless and all people of Vanuatu (Nevans).
Through our Social Justice (SEA) Programme, our community will provide support, through donations of books and resources, to the
local people.
Our Year 12 boys are currently completing their Year 12 Mid-Course Examinations. Please remember them in your daily
prayers.
Please keep in your prayers the following members of our community - Timothy Pickering (brother of staff member Deryck Pickering),
Brendan Cleary (brother of Tim Cleary), Helen Anglicas (wife of David Anglicas), Mary Smith (Front Office Reception), Michael Bataille (brother
of Anthony Bataille, Head of Executive Office) and Michael Ledbury (grandfather of Matthew in Year 9).
RIP
Please remember Carmel Carlton and the Carlton family. Carmel had three sons who attended St Augustine’s – Gregory (dec. Class of 1972),
Damien (Principal, St John Bosco College, Engadine, Class of 1976) and Timothy (Class of 1976).
May the Lord welcome Carmel into his kingdom of peace.
Reflection… St Patrick’s Day Prayer
I arise today
Through God’s strength to pilot me,
God’s might to uphold me,
God’s wisdom to guide me,
God’s eye to look before me,
God’s hand to guard me,
God’s way to lie before me,
God’s shield to protect me.
I thank God through Christ our Lord. Amen

Open Day
Open Day was a tremendous afternoon
for showcasing our academic, cultural and
sporting achievements . A sincere thank
you to our staff, parents and boys for their
warm welcome when greeting guests to
the College last week. The range of displays
and demonstrations were testament to
the diversity and breadth of our holistic
programme at St Augustine’s College.
Thank you, in particular, to the large group
of students who acted as tour guides. First
impressions are lasting impressions and
many of our visitors were complimentary of
their positive interaction with their guides.
Similarly, the general public’s first impression of a St Augustine’s boy is often when he is in the public domain. These impressions
are also lasting impressions and it is essential that our boys are always at their best in public places. If boys cherish what is being
attempted here for their education they will ensure that they always act and dress in public in a manner which shows that they are
proud of the St Augustine’s community to which they belong and with which they wish to be identified.
Outdoor education
Academic Matters
When a family accepts a position at St Augustine’s College
they do so with a full understanding of the commitment
required. The College remains steadfast that some activities are
compulsory. These activities are part of a boy’s formation and
contribute to either their physical, social, spiritual, emotional or
academic growth.
Our HSC students have been in examination mode this week.
Examinations are an important part of the learning process
as they are a revealing time for staff and boys. For staff, the
examination provides feedback on how successfully they
have presented concepts while identifying students in need
of additional support and encouragement. For students,
the examinations are a reality check on their current study
programme and examination preparation.
A family, upon enrolment, makes a commitment to the College
sport programme, our community service obligation, our retreat
courses, the outdoor education programme and naturally they
make the commitment to our academic programme. We are not,
however, a smorgasbord of activities where a student or their
family pick and choose the activities that appeal to them. Events
such as the House athletic and swimming carnivals, outdoor
education, the Lenten Appeal and Walkathon are all part of
a commitment a family makes when enrolling their son at St
Augustine’s College.
Over the next two weeks our Year 8 and 9 students will
participate in outdoor education camps. I know that the vast
majority of our boys are very much looking forward to their
time away as are many of our generous colleagues who will
accompany the boys, alongside the specialist outdoor education
provider. I remind parents that involvement in outdoor
education is a very important part of a well-rounded
St Augustine’s College education and many hours have gone into
the preparation of programmes.
Lenten Appeal
The College grounds in recent weeks have resembled a market
place for the selling of delicious homemade treats to eat up our
loose change as part of the Lenten Appeal. Staff, parents and
boys have generously given of their time to raise funds for those
on the margins of our society both here and overseas. Lent is a
time to remind us of our common responsibility that the care for
people in need is not just a matter for governments but for all.
Project Compassion is a practical way to help make a difference.
Year 12 Academic Progress Reports will be posted home during
the term break. These reports provide a brief analysis on your
son’s Term One progress and will be the basis of discussion at
Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews early in Term Two.
Congratulations
Congratulations to the College ISA swim team who were runners
up to Oakhill College on Wednesday at Homebush. The Junior
Boys (12-14 years) Division 1 came first, the Intermediate Boys
(15-16 years) Division 1 and the Senior Boys (17-19 years)
Division 1 both came second in their respective divisions.
Approximately 15 boys will proceed to the NSWCIS Carnival on
28 & 29 April at SOPAC. Congratulations to Nicholas Jennens who
broke the ISA record in 100m 14 years Freestyle in a time of 57.69
(record previously held by Oakhill College since 2007). The Pacific
School Games will be held in November this year in Adelaide. We
hope to have at least one swimmer proceed to this level.
Seven-a-side Rugby
Last weekend, St Augustine’s College, in partnership with the
Augustinian charity Fair Go Australia hosted a Seven-a-side
Rugby carnival. Teams from the GPS, CAS and ISA schoolboy
rugby competitions competed with the Lloyd McDermott
Aboriginal representative side and an indigenous team from
Redfern in a 16 team competition. Congratulations to Oakhill
College who defeated St Augustine’s College in a closely
contested final. Thank you to the hard working Rugby committee
for their planning and organisation of this very successful event.
St Patrick’s Day – 17 March
St Patrick lived in the 5th century and came to Ireland from either Scotland or England. He had been a slave and became Ireland’s
best known bishop, a man whose legacy far outweighs the facts which are known about his life. There is something about his
restlessness, something Saint Augustine spoke a great deal about, which has encapsulated the spirt of the Irish people who have
found their way all over the world.
God’s power to guide me, God’s might to uphold me.
God’s wisdom to teach me, God’s eyes to watch over me.
God’s ear to hear me, God’s word to give me speech.
God’s hand to guide me, God’s way to lie before me…..
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger,
Christ in every eye that sees me….

Year 12 Mid-Course
Examinations
Our Year 12 students commenced their Mid-Course
Examinations this week. This examination session will provide
our students with an excellent opportunity to showcase their
knowledge and understanding in their relevant courses so
far. The effective use of feedback provided by teachers will be
critical for ongoing student improvement. I thank the Year 12
teachers for their work in preparing our students for the MidCourse Examinations.
Year 10 Geography Excursion
On Wednesday 11 March 2015, Year 10 were involved in a
Geography excursion to Dee Why beach and Collaroy. Students
were studying the impacts that humans have on their local
environment. This was apparent at Narrabeen and Collaroy
where apartments and houses have been built on the fore
dune. Likewise at Dee Why Lagoon, Ph tests, among others,
showed the impact that humans have. The Year Group then
proceeded to study management strategies which were
designed to fix a series of the issues. The boys realised that
while these strategies work to a degree, more monetary
investment is needed to guarantee success. Overall, the group
enjoyed investigating the areas and soon learned the dramatic
effect that people have on their environment. I wish to thank
Ellis Kinnaird for his co-ordination of this most worthwhile
excursion.

Bus Monitors
St Augustine’s College always insists on high standards in
reference to student conduct on public transport. Last week, I
met and congratulated the 2015 Year 11 Bus Monitors.
The Bus Monitors are: Lachlan Channell, Ned Checkett, Harry
Coates, Anthony De Lorenzo, Ben Donlan, Seamus Fraser,
Jack Gaggin, Ellis Gerry, Jacob Hall, Jack Harrold, Zac Harvey,
Chris Hrones, Michael Humphrey, Bailey McAndrew, Campbell

Pietor, Bailey Pola-Smith, Cameron Prince, Callum Robb,
Alexander Russell, Eddie Ryan, Dom Scognamiglio, Freddie
Tebbutt, Nick Thorowgood, Jack Turner, Patrick Van Dyk, Reilly
Van Greiken and Ben Wigney.
These students will ensure that appropriate student conduct is
promoted and maintained on State Transit buses. Students will
be able to approach the Monitors for appropriate assistance.
The Bus Monitors will be introduced to the rest of the student
community in the near future. I wish to thank Daniel Fee,
Goold House Formation Leader, for his assistance with the
organisation of this initiative.

Unpacked
More than 50 parents attended
the first Parent Education
Seminar conducted by the
College entitled Positive
Parenting and Restorative
Practices Unpacked. The
presenter, Maurizio Vespa,
proved to be entertaining,
practical and informative.
He highlighted methods
that parents can embed
Seminar Presenter: Maurizio Vespa
restorative practices in their
own parenting styles. Amongst other things, a key feature in
understanding restorative practices was that our students have
an opportunity to learn from all social situations and that the
relationship that they share with others is crucial in overcoming
challenges. He also mentioned that the influence that parents
have on their children about many aspects of life should never
be underestimated.

Reconciliation
Grooming
The ability to reflect on behaviours and have the courage
to admit that there may be aspects of our lives that can
be improved, is the central theme in the sacrament of
reconciliation. On Monday we had 3 of our Primary classes
participate in a very thoughtful reconciliation ceremony,
presided over by Fr Senan OSA and organised very efficiently
by our Mission Advisor, Gina Marshall. We are very fortunate
to have the services of Fr Senan, who is always so generous
with his time, ensuring that the boys in Primary experience
his calm presence and his wise insights. To be involved in
Monday’s services and witnessing first-hand the contemplative
atmosphere was an excellent way to more meaningfully think
about the Lenten messages of forgiveness and reflection. The
boys deserve special mention for their active yet prayerful
involvement as do their class teachers, James Kirkwood, Liz
Armenio and Andrew Clyne for their excellent preparation.
The remainder of the classes will complete their reconciliation
sessions today.
Thank you to all parents for ensuring that your sons come to
school each day wearing their uniform with pride and looking
very smart.
I remind all boys of College expectation regarding length of hair,
ensuring that it is above the collar and out of eyes. I also remind
boys that they can only wear their sport uniform on days they
have sport lessons or on Fridays for the remainder of the term.
Open day
I would like to thank our wonderful band of teachers for their
preparation in organising their classes for Open Day last Friday.
To Liz Armenio and Andrew Clyne, thank you for not only having
your classes looking so inviting, but also to your wonderful class
helpers who acted as very capable hosts for the many visitors.
Robotics
Our Robotics programme in Year 6 is just one of the many
initiatives we offer in our Primary School. Not only do the
boys become familiar with the language associated with
programming, but they also design their own games using
Kudo and Scratch programmes. Soon the Year 5 boys will
complete their own multi- plot stories which use hyperlinks
to develop ‘choose your own adventure’ type narratives. Our
teachers certainly provide a curriculum which is not only
creative but also caters for many individual learning styles and
abilities.
SEQTA
ICT /Laptop Agreement Policy
At the beginning of the year when we handed out Year 5
laptops, Guy Richards (e-learning integrator) discussed the
importance of monitoring your child’s use of technology at
home. It is imperative that parents are aware of the software
that boys have access to, much of which is age appropriate. I
strongly encourage all parents to check their sons’ devices and
ensure that the software loaded is in fact age appropriate. Many
parents would be surprised that their sons are accessing social
network sites which are prohibited for children under the age of
13.
The College’s appropriate use of laptop policy should by now
have been signed and returned. The inappropriate use of
technology and in particular the posting of offensive images is
looked upon very seriously by the College.
Our College learning management system (Seqta/coneqt-S/
coneqt/P) is up and running. Please be patient as teachers
continue to become more confident in its full functionality. If
you have any questions about Seqta, please direct them to your
son’s class teacher or our Primary School e-learning assistant Liz Armenio.
Disagreements
I leave you all this week with a very important message and
one which I emphasise to the boys I teach each week and that
is to ‘disagree respectfully’. It is natural to have differences of
opinions and sometimes these may lead to arguments and
relationships that become strained. Many arguments that I deal
with between boys involves a breakdown in communication
and the inability to listen to another’s point of view. To me,
forgiveness is the most essential and important Gospel Value
and the most powerful when relationships are restored.
Quote for the week: ‘and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive
those who trespass against us’
Year 6 Cluster Mass
Next Tuesday 23rd March, our Year 6 classes will celebrate the
Eucharist with our fellow Diocesan schools at OLGC Forestville.
All boys are required to wear their full school uniform and will
have recess after the Mass before returning to the College in
time for lunch.

Primary School Reconciliation:
‘Listening with our Lives’.
Year 5 and 6 classes celebrated Reconciliation this week in Monica
Chapel. Our scripture reading from the prophet Ezekiel reminded us
that sometimes we can be hard-hearted in our relationship with God
and with others:
‘I will give you a new heart and a new mind.
In place of your stone heart,
I will give you a heart with feeling.’
Despite the many times we will continue to make mistakes, God
always loves us: ‘You will be my people, and I will be your God.’
Thank you to Fr Senan OSA for his ministry to the boys - every
student had the opportunity to speak with him. The preparation
of classes by their Primary teacher ensured the boys understood
the purpose of our gathering in prayer, which was evident in the
prayerful atmosphere during each group’s ceremony.
Fifth Sunday of Lent:
‘Whoever serves me, must follow me.’ (John 12:26)
A thought for personal reflection this week:
•
•
•
At school: When I say ‘I follow Jesus’, I really mean…!
At work or study: Would it make sense to believe in Jesus, but not follow him?
In my family life: Praying to Jesus is not about words, but about action. Do we follow?
A Prayer for this week:
Loving God,
Jesus followed your will
doing justice,
preaching love,
acting honestly.
Help me to do the same,
even though it will mean doing it tough out there
in the real world. Amen.

Last Friday the School held its Open Day and, despite the
weather, the school put on an amazing show of all that is St
Augustine’s. Talking to parents old and, hopefully, new, there
was a general theme that they loved the sense of community
they found in the school.
I would like to thank all those people who helped out on the
day, particularly those on the BBQ. Every time I came past there
seemed to be new faces behind the counter and many, many
helpers, both cooking and serving and engaging with those
looking at the school. This reflects the giving to the community
and part of what builds it.
It is now time to ask once again for some more support both
in the form of volunteers but even if you cannot assist, I ask for
your participation. The next event on the school P&F Calendar
is the P&F Father & Son Breakfast. This is always a great time to
build ties with the other Dads (or Grandads/ Guardians/Father
Figures). Come and join us on Monday 30 March, you can come
for 5 minutes or come for the whole breakfast. RSVP is essential
(see invite in Tolle Lege).

ACADEMIC SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS
In an effort to further enhance the study culture that exists in the College, students are offered additional academic support after
school in the Augustine Resource Centre (ARC). The ARC is open for students in Years 5 - 9 until 5:00pm and until 6:00pm for
students in Years 10 - 12 on Monday to Thursday. We are fortunate to have a number of recent past scholars from the College,
including Keith Hardy, Jordan Candido and Josh Wigney, available to support students with their studies during these times.
Academic staff also generously make themselves available to assist boys. Students, particularly in Years 11 and 12, are encouraged
to stay on at school and complete their homework in study partnerships in our well-resourced library. It is a great opportunity for all
students to ask for help in areas where they may be struggling and also to consolidate work they have studied in class. All students
attending the ARC after school must have work to complete.

STAGE BANDS
We warmly invite any boy interested in extending their
playing to come to Stage Band. We have 3 Stage Bands at
the College. Stage Band 1 is for the established players at
the College. Stage Band 2 is mainly for boys in Middle and
Senior School, and Stage Band 3 is mainly aimed at Primary
School students.
If you would like to start learning an instrument in 2015, the
College provides several instrumental tutors. Please enroll by
contacting Lynne Papahatzis.
INSTRUMENT DONATIONS
The College Music Department is always looking to acquire
instruments. Doesn’t matter how big or small it is, or whether
it is not in full working order, we’ll fix it up and find it a great
new home! If you have an instrument lying around unused,
please contact Joseph Montz.
We currently have openings for the following instruments:
•
•
•
•
Saxophones (Alto, Tenor and Baritone)
Trumpet
Trombone
Rhythm Section (Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drum Set and
Piano)
If your son is interested in this, please contact Joseph Montz to
find out more.
INTOSCIENCE
This year St Augustine’s Science Faculty has introduced a
new software package for the Science classes in Years 7 and
8. Dave Canavan one of the creators explains “ IntoScience
brings the theory of science to life in an interactive, fun and
inquiry-based way. With over 160 activities and assessments
aligned to the Australian Curriculum for Year 7 and 8, it covers
the curriculum and more. It has virtual worlds with each
student having their own customisable avatar with which
they can explore a Research Lab, Biodome, Asian Woodland
and more. As well as these 3D worlds, there are interactive,
curriculum-based activities and a ‘live’ science quiz in which
students can play each other and compete for the highest
scores. Be sure to check out the most impressive of the
3D worlds: The Jenolan Caves. Mapped by the CSIRO for
IntoScience, student can explore the actual caves and figure
out how they formed, from the comfort of their home. There
is something for everyone to enjoy in the programme.”
We are getting some very positive feedback from the
students and hope this new initiative will foster a greater
interest in science within the College.

Thank you to all the members of the College Rugby Committee
who co-ordinated an exciting 7’s competition at Rat Park. It was
a wonderful afternoon showcasing speed and great talent from
the many players involved. It was an exciting competition that
was enjoyed by all; players, coaches and also the spectators.
The results from the day are as follows:
Division 3 Bowl
St Gregory’s defeated St Augustine’s 2
Division 4 Shield
Redfern Warriors defeated Lloyd McDermott
Water Polo
Congratulations to Year 9 student Harry Chilcott who has
gained selection in the NSW14s Water Polo squad.
ISA Swimming
Our best swimmers represented the College last Wednesday
11 March at the ISA Swimming Carnival which was held at
Homebush. Thank you for the hard work and effort that all
swimmers gave on the day. Thank you also to both to Anita
Harris and Bob Ferguson who managed the swimmers and
ensured the best possible result was achieved for the College.
St Augustine’s came 2nd in the overall point score being
narrowly defeated by Oakhill College. A special mention to our
Junior boys who won the Junior (Division 1) point score.
Rowing
Another outstanding weekend in Canberra for the College
rowers. They performed over and above expectations and were
admirable in representing our school. Congratulations to all
rowers, coaches and also the dedicated parental spectators.
A detailed summary of results can be found in the report from
Thomas Jubb, Teacher in Charge of Rowing.

IPSHA
Our IPSHA teams played Trinity Grammar at their home court
at Strathfield in their final match for the season.
In the Year 5 match the boys played some terrific defence
however missed shots saw them in a tight contest early.
They battled on till the final whistle going down 16-17 in an
exciting finish. Congratulations to all players in the Year
5 team who had their first taste of interschool basketball
this term. The boys worked hard at all training sessions and
games and improved each week.
Our Year 6 team had a great game with the boys playing really
well as a team and hitting big shots. Great teamwork between
Jed Walsh and Dylan Richmond creating shots for each other
while Lachlan Cameron and Liam Painter owned the boards.
Jacob Hansen played some great defence and took some
steals while Scott Walters and Noa Faatui played great defence
resulting in some fast breaks. Saints taking out the game 34-28,
well done to all players in the Year 6 team on a great season.
Year 7 Pre-season @ St Pius X
Our Year 7 teams took on the best from St Pius on the weekend
at the final round of their preseason competition, recording
some strong results. Well done to players in both the Suns and
the Hawks for their commitment to this competition over the
last three weekends. Both teams improved each week and
showcased some exceptional skills on the court.

Congratulations to the following students who played in the
ISA Vs AICES representative matches at St Pius X on Monday
evening.

A reminder that boys who have a clash with cricket and rugby
training should be committing to cricket trainings for the rest
of the season. Only a few weeks of cricket remain and no rugby
trials will be taking place, only trainings. Boys must attend
cricket training.
CRICKET BAT HANDLE RE-GRIPPING
Any boy looking to spice up their bat this season with some
colour, bring it in to the PE office for same day service. Only $10
fully fitted. Colours include Pink, red, black, white, and green.
CRICKET TRIVIA
Congratulations to Bernard Smith (yet again!) who correctly
answered last week’s question: Who am I? I played in only one
test. Took a wicket with my first ball, which also happened to be
the first ball of the match. The answer was Arthur Conningham.
This week’s question: Who was the first Test cricketer to bat in
all positions (1-11)? Email me the name of the player for your
chance to win!
CRICKETERS OF THE WEEK
After scoring 97 not out in the previous match, Lachlan Charles
has again been unlucky this weekend being dismissed for 99.
Two super efforts – well done, Lachlan. That elusive maiden
century is just around the corner. Also, Matt Brewster scored 50
in the same match versus St Pius Purple.
STAFF V PARENTS T20 CRICKET MATCH
Due to some calendar clashes, the 2015 Staff v Parents cricket
match will be now played on Friday 27th March at Millers
Reserve, Manly Vale. Interested parents are asked to email me
to reserve their spot on the Parents team. This game is a great
social event and a BBQ will be happening post match.

ROWING
The ISA 1sts took out their game in a tight contest 74-65 while
the 2nd V went down in a nail bitter 66-71. All St Augustine’s
teams were standouts for ISA and we look forward to next
week’s matches where they will take on GPS.
The St Augustine’s Rowing Community made their way to
Canberra for a long weekend of racing on Lake Burly Griffin,
which was the most successful participation of our College at
this event.

5 Gold and one Silver at ACT Championships
Our boys surprised their competitors, spectators and probably
themselves when they won the entire set of Yr 8, Yr 9 and Yr 10
quads! Other stand out performances were the Silver medal
in an U19 Four event with our rowers being U17 and the Yr 9
double of Marcus Oates and Connor Hopkins winning their
second Gold. Finally Pat Easson took on the best Yr 9 single
scullers and won Championship Gold in a field of 16 singles.
The conditions were challenging this year, the gusty cross
head wind made the races heavy and it was difficult for the
coxswains to maintain their course. Our boys did that well
and our squad was congratulated by spectators and the race
commentator for their performances.
FOOTBALL (SOCCER)
Parent Help Needed
All our football teams need a coach and team manager to play
in the Manly Warringah competition. Unfortunately we do not
have enough resources at the College to cover most teams and
rely heavily on volunteers from parents for these roles. If you can
help or have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Below is a list of teams still in need of a coach and/or manager:
Head Coach Judith Ungemach said: “We enjoy racing on Lake
Burley Griffin, every boy gets to race in multiple boat classes, the
boys enjoy the success as well as the social aspects of being on
tour with the Rowing Squad.”
Many hands made this trip possible, amongst others: Thomas
Jubb with logistics, academic support and trailer towing; Barney
Potts with driving the school bus and coaching; the Easson
Family with accommodation and food; and the Ungemach
family for coaching leadership.
The Regatta marked the end of a very successful season for all
Junior crews. The Yr10 eight and Yr12 student Zac von Appen
have qualified for the Australian Championships in two weeks
time in Penrith.
Zac von Appen will row in the U19 pair with his fellow Australian
representative Callum Rossi (Riverview). They will be joined by
two rowers from The Kings School to compete in the U19 coxless
four. Our Yr 10 eight will compete in the U17 Men’s Eight against
powerhouses like: Shore (NSW) , Scotch, Melbourne Grammar,
Xavier, Geelong Grammar (VIC), The Hutchins School (TAS),
Nudgee (QLD), Wesley and Trinity (WA). Tickets for the Nationals
can be obtained via Ticketek, the event code is “SIRR”, our crews
competing from March 27-29.

Playing Uniform
All players will need to purchase the St Augustine’s Football
playing shorts and socks from the College clothing shop. The
playing jersey will be provided by the team manager at the first
game of the season. It would also be a good idea to purchase
one of the rain jackets. Students are expected to arrive at games
wearing either this jacket or the college sports tracksuit during
colder times and not other casual clothing.
Volunteer Needed
Grounds Co-Coordinator: We are in need of someone to look
after Passmore Reserve field set-up and pack down throughout
the season. If you can help with any of the above roles please
contact Chris Gray at the College via email.
