Congress stages walkout demanding
probe in police lathi charge
Raipur, (VW) The Opposition
Congress while participating in discussion over admissibility of adjournment notice on the police canning of Congress workers demanded
a high level probe into the incident.
They staged a walkout from the State
Assembly proceeding protesting that
the government did not announce a
probe. Congress MLAs after the
Question Hour demanded immediate
discussion on the issue through an
adjournment motion. The Speaker
who had received notice from 32
Congress members including the
Leader of Opposition TS Singhdeo,
Bhupesh Baghel and others allowed
discussion on the admissibility of the
motion. Starting the discussion
Baghel alleged that the police resort-
ed to brute force to stop the Congress
workers, farmer and labourers from
marching towards the State
Assembly. He said police had deployed a posse of 1000 troops. Despite
such massive police deployment the
Congress workers reached up to the
gate number 3. Police resorted to lathi
charge without even permission from
magistrate and even pelted stones at
the agitators. He alleged that police
thrashed women Congress workers
who had reached up to the gate of the
State Assembly. Baghel went on to allege that police were looking especially for him and TS Singhdeo. Alleging
conspiracy on part of police he demanded a high level probe into it.
However,
Home
Minister
Ramsewak Paikra in his reply denied
use of brute lathi charge on the
Congress workers and farmers.
Section 144 has been put in force near
the State Assembly building thereby
putting a ban on procession. Special
arrangements had been made to prevent the procession from every side to
prevent the processionists from staging gherao of the Assembly. The
Congress workers led by their leaders
tried to march ahead by breaking barricades put up to stop them. They
even came to jostle with the government officials. However, they were
stopped without use of force. Led by
senior leaders and legislators about
1000 Congress workers marched towards the Assembly. They broke the
security barricades despite persuasion and caution by the magistrate
and moved ahead. The agitationists
even pelted stones at the police personnel that injured 10 policemen and
four civilians. 904 people include 17
legislators were arrested and released
unconditionally, the Home Minister
added.
Several Congress members including TS, Singhdeo, Dhanendra Sahu,
Satyanarayan Sharma, Amarji
Bhagat, Rajendra Roy Kawasi Lakma
and Renu Jogi also spoke on the issue
demanding a high level probe into the
incident. After both the treasury and
Opposition benches made their point
on the issue the Speaker disallowed
the adjournment motion. Protesting
that the Government did not announce probe, the Congress members
staged walkout from the House.

Seminar on Women & Child Protection and Media discusses various issues
Raipur, March 18: "While reporting issues relating to
women and child, the mainstream Indian media should
look into the factors affecting their security and well
being, so that people could be sensitized about their
problems," said Geeta Tai Gunde, All India Head,
Mahila Samanwaya. While speaking at the inaugural
session of the national seminar 'Women & Child
Protection and Media' at Kushabhau Thakre University
of journalism and Mass Communication on Wednesday
she said that the media influences the society a lot and
hence media should not only aim at giving information
but also create sensitization about issues affecting the
society. She also called upon the people to rise to the occasion to deal with the social stigmas like women harassment, child labour etc.. The seminar was jointly organized by Kushabhau Thakre University of

mineral allocations was passed in Lok Sabha earlier this

The select committees' reports provoked the Congress
party to strongly protest over the measures being rushed
without taking on board the concerns of stakeholders.
Protesting Congress members trooped into the well of
the house, forcing a 10-minute adjournment, after the reports of the two select committees were presented in the
house.
As the reports were tabled in the upper house, Leader of
Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said: "We want to register
our protest against the manner in which mines and coal

According to another
Xinhua report from Ramallah,
a senior Palestinian official reiterated on Wednesday after
the Israeli election results were out that without establishing a Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital,
"there will be no peace in the Middle East".
"The Palestinian position is the same Arab position that
what is needed from the Israeli government is to be committed to the two-state solution and east Jerusalem as the
capital of the future Palestinian state," Nabil Abu Rdineh,
spokesman of the Palestinian presidency, said.
He said the Palestinians did not care who the Israeli
prime minister was as "what we want is to see an Israeli
government that recognises the two-state solution and east
Jerusalem is the capital of the Palestinian state".
On the eve of the elections, Netanyahu repeated his rejection to the establishment of a Palestinian state and considered the city of Jerusalem the united and eternal capital of
the state of Israel.
Meanwhile, Yasser Abed Rabbo, secretary-general of the
Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) executive committee, told Xinhua that Likud's victory in the elections "is a
victory of racism and for the occupation and settlement".
He slammed the right wing in Israel as "a psychic society
similar to the minority white community in South Africa",
adding that "the Palestinians shouldn't be panicked or confused, because we have our means of response".(agencies)

"What I have understood is that the process has begun to
find out the culprits but we would like to request the chief
minister to make a fast approach and to see that justice is
done at the earliest," Cleemis said in the morning.
Iterating the Catholic Church's commitment "with more
fervour", Cleemis asserted "we are not stopped by such
events and such violations".
He also thanked the public in Ranaghat and "the public of
the entire country who are showing their sympathy and
their sentiments of togetherness at this point of time".
"We prayed together and we prayed for everyone. She has

but justice has to be brought to the people," he said.
Archbishop of Kolkata Thomas D'Souza expressed happiness over the government handing over the probe to the
CBI.
"In a way we are happy that the government is taking
steps to nab the culprits," D'Souza said.

"Has CBI agreed to probe d Nun rape?" tweeted
Communist Party of India-Marxist state secretary S.K.

the rape.
Throughout Wednesday, Kolkata continued to be rocked
by protests over the Ranaghat crime. The Bharatiya Janata
Party Mahila Morcha took out a march to the secretariat,
while the Left Front's women activists organised a silent
protest rally from College Square to Esplanade.
The Left parties also held a candlelight vigil in the city.

Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, who heads the CBCI, said
they wanted swift action from the chief minister.

Duminy, 30, is just the eighth man overall to take a hattrick in a World Cup match and second in the 2015 edition
after Steven Finn’s effort at the end of Australia’s innings
in the tournament opener on February 14.
Duminy also became the second spinner to claim a hattrick in a World Cup after Pakistani off-spinner Saqlain
Mushtaq's heroics in the 1999 event.
Moreover, Duminy is only the second South African to
get a hat-trick in ODI cricket. Pacer Charl Langeveldt did it
in 2005. Meanwhile, Morne Morkel removed Sangakkara,
while Tahir bagged the wickets of young all-rounder
Thisara Perera (0) and Lasith Malinga (3).
The match was almost dead after the first innings and the
target was too small for South Africa to "choke".
"This is easily the worst performance that we've done in
the World Cup and it happened to be in the quarter-finals,"
bemoaned Sri Lanka skipper Mathews.
"There were no demons on the track, we could have batted well. We could have at least got to 250 and given our
bowlers a chance, but unfortunately we didn't bat well.
Maybe the nerves, we just didn't go for the shots," he admitted.
Mathews thanked old war horses Jayawardene and
Sangakkara for their contributions.
"It's disappointing not to make it a memorable one for
Mahela and Sanga. But let me take this opportunity on behalf of the country and the team to thank them for their
services," Mathews said.
