New Annapolitans News April 2015 www.Annapolitans.org New Annapolitans P.O. Box 5251 Annapolis, MD 21403-0700 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: Bette Henick (410-267-1507) [email protected] 410-216-6000 GENERAL MEETING: Wednesday, April 1, 2015 PROGRAM: “I Love Paris” by Stefan Scaggiari WHERE: Unitarian Universalist Church, 333 Dubois Rd., Annapolis, MD WHEN: Social time 9:30-10a.m. Meeting 10:00am OPTIONAL LUNCH: Bonefish Grill **Prospective members are invited to check in with the VP-Membership at 9:15am** General meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month except February, July and August. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: Bette Henick (410-267-1507) [email protected] I’ve often said, “The more opportunities you have to meet and connect with our members, the more fulfilling your membership.” The New Annapolitans can be whatever you wish, whether a weekly or monthly bridge or mah jong game, or a way to meet other book lovers, walkers, or golf enthusiasts. Most importantly, it’s always there for us to socially interact as well as to open our minds to new experiences. At the heart of New Annapolitans are our Interest Groups, which have been so ably guided by Ann Dixon over the last year and a half. We are slowly but surely approaching spring, the time when our Interest Groups are looking for new members to take over the responsibilities of chairpersons. Please consider chairing or co-chairing a group with which you are involved, especially if you have not done so. I co-chaired “Gadabouts” with Carol Stern several years ago, and not only did I make a good friend, but enjoyed it tremendously. I urge you to “experience” our various interest groups. If an activity published in our newsletter appeals to you, just contact the IG chairperson if you’d like to attend or participate. Some of the venues are limited due to space so it is necessary to RSVP. Our policy of switching chairpersons after two years brings fresh ideas and perspectives to the groups and has been very effective. The big success story of the past year is our “After Hours” IG, which had been on the verge of extinction when it was revitalized thanks to the heroic efforts of Sally Ehrle and Pat Fitzgerald. If you have an interest that is not covered, please consider bringing it to the attention of Ann Dixon, who will guide you in the process of adding a new IG to our roster. As an avid reader (and member of “Bookies”), I am very excited about our program for the May 6th General Meeting. We are welcoming three authors who will participate in a panel discussion of “Women’s roles in history and how modern preconceptions sometimes misjudge them.” In case you want to familiarize yourself with these authors before then, they are Sophie Perinot (The Sister Queens), Kate Quinn (Mistress of Rome), and Stephanie Dray (Lily of the Nile). All three contributed to the novel A Day of Fire, a novel of Pompeii where six authors each wrote a section of the book. Bette Henick BOARD INFORMATION 1st VICE PRESIDENT-NEWCOMERS Georgina Hammond (410-263-4342) [email protected] winter, and we won’t have as many renewal forms going astray. As in the past, renewals will be due by June 30 to avoid any penalty. All Newcomers (new members are newcomers for a year after joining) are invited to alternating coffees at 10am or teas at 1pm on the third Thursday of each month. The April 16th Newcomer’s Tea will be held at the Eastport Library hosted by Jan Ice. The time has changed to 12:30-2:30pm to accommodate the library’s schedule. Please join us to meet other newcomers and learn about events in and around Annapolis. Watch for an email from your Big Sister, and mark your calendars for these fun gettogethers. So please watch for a bright coral-colored renewal form to arrive in early May, and try to return it promptly with your dues for next year. 2nd VICE PRESIDENT-PROGRAMS Ana Garcia (956-763-7550) [email protected] Our program for April will feature a local favorite, Stefan Scaggiari. He will be performing his I Love Paris program featuring music of Chopin, Ravel, and Gershwin. http://www.stefscaggiari.com The optional lunch after the program is at Bonefish Grill, located at 1915 Town Center Blvd., Annapolis. https://www.bonefishgrill.com Once again…if you know someone who has recently moved to the Greater Annapolis area and expressed an interest in joining New Annapolitans, please encourage her to visit our website at www.annapolitans.org. Links are available there to download our current newsletter and New Member Application. 4th VICE PRESIDENT-INTEREST GROUPS Ann Dixon (443-458-5042) [email protected] Spring is just around the corner, time to be out and about. Our spring interest groups are starting up again! Please read your newsletter and if you find something that appeals to you, contact the chair and join in the fun! The $25 two-course lunch includes tax and gratuity. Cash payment will be taken in the church lobby before the General Meeting. If you are arriving late or can't make the meeting and would like to join us for lunch, e-mail or call Judy Spiewak to reserve your seat at 508-877-2686. It is not too early to think about next year. If your group's chair or co-chair has served for two years, you need to please name a new chair/co-chair and submit it to me before July 1, 2015. Thank you. If you have never chaired a group, please consider stepping up to take on this important role. Concerned that you won't know what to do? There is always assistance, and this is a great way to meet other NA members and to help make our groups successful. 3rd VICE PRESIDENT-MEMBERSHIP Ann Carroll (410-224-2753) [email protected] SECRETARY SUNSHINE, SYMPATHY & SUPPORT Mary Lou Fultz (410-798-4637) [email protected] We welcomed a raft of new members at our March meeting, as snow and February’s luncheon meant that we had not met in several months. We now have 652 members, which is close to 20 more than we had this time last year. We sent get well cards to Vera Torrence, Carol Laurenzo, and Linda Siner. We have made a slight change in our regular delivery time for the spring renewal notice. In the past, it has gone out in April – but this year we are waiting for the first week in May to slightly shorten our renewal period. We’re hoping this will be easier for those of you who go away in the We sent a sympathy card to Rona Greenberg on the passing of her husband Jerome. Please keep members and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Also, please send Mary Lou any names and information about other members who would benefit from a card sent on behalf of all New Annapolitans. 2 Parking Reminder: Do not park in front of the main entrance of the church and playground.
