New Beginnings
Much like most of the members of the New Annapolitans, we have relocated many times. With our last and
perhaps final move, our return to the east coast didn’t have the ease of transition that we were expecting! Originally
from Boston, we were far from our roots and time was up – we were all dehydrated – we needed to get back to our
coast. We were moving to “almost home” and were excited by the new adventure. The surprise was that although
we could talk-the-talk and walk-the-walk, the area was not ready to embrace any “newcomers.” Annapolis,
although they weren’t aware of it at the time, was on the cusp of being discovered - and we were in the frontlines.
Most families with school age kids favored the northern Virginia area because of the reputation of the
schools. However, we had chosen east of D.C. as it appeared to fulfill most of our needs: history, boating, military
and the proximity to a treasure trove of cultural centers. Reality quickly set in - there was little to welcome us.
Having left a very busy and active life it was a jolt to step into a community that was not ready to embrace the
influx of new residents.
Thrown into the role of trailblazer is not a comfortable position, but a new life had to be created. Two local
groups accepted me for membership, one because I was a willing volunteer and the other because of a long deceased
family connection. In an attempt to cast the net further afield in the search of like-minded people, I was denied
access to two other groups: a local book club and the newcomer’s group in an adjoining town! The latter felt
compelled to inform me that it wasn’t meant for people like me (Annapolis!). The gauntlet was thrown down.
Challenge accepted – Start with a book club. Thus the beginnings of “And Ladies of the Club,” a fledgling book
group that met once a month. The group turned out to be very much a photocopy of the original “Ladies.” Those
who have read it will know wherefore I speak!
Was it desperation? It was winter – new town, young ones busy with school obligations, husband off to
who knows where. The rental we were occupying was cramped, cold and uncomfortable. Our new primary
residence was under construction and we still owned a home in the Midwest that we were unable to sell.
Friends were located much too far away for casual visits or sympathetic chats. There were too many dead
ends and nothing opening up such as creating another bookshop similar to the one I’d sold so recently or finding
local employment.
What to do next? The local paper listed a plethora of self-help groups - open to anyone who was trying to
eliminate extra pounds or had addiction issues. I didn’t fit the profile. So next best thing – start my own self-help
group! Thus the New Annapolitans was created! It was as easy as contacting the library for a meeting room and
dropping a short blurb in the local paper that the first meeting of the New Annapolitans would take place, etc. The
surprise was how easy it was to set this up but further why hadn’t one already been created in such a busy and
active town?
Not sure if anyone would see the short announcement – or even care, but the meeting was scheduled –
coffee included. Then the happy discovery. A dozen ladies arrived, all bundled up against the cold and all delighted
to find equally displaced souls! All had been very active in the communities they had left behind; all were feeling
the barrenness of what had been for the most part an eagerly anticipated move. They all shared their dismay at the
lack of connection to their new community. We bonded immediately. At the conclusion of that first meeting, eight
ladies (that would be two tables) left together to spend an afternoon of bridge with their newfound soon-to-be best
friends!
Not much has changed since that first meeting in February. There are many more special interest groups
and our treasury is no longer kept in a cigar box under Meme’s bed. What is so similar to our early days is that the
ladies at any of the activities bond so quickly. Why not? We share similar interests, backgrounds, and the big one:
the commonality of “new.”
Where else can one walk into a group and have over 600 potential new best friends? Each has something
to say and most have been involved in amazing accomplishments that a bit of conversation will reveal. They all
come from something and have had interesting, productive, satisfying lives, and all seem delighted with the idea
of so many new friends. Most importantly however, we all share that one common bond that can start with what
Bill Bryson so aptly coined: “I’m a stranger here myself!” Such is the start of many wonderful, lasting and not to
be missed friendships, and after all these years, those friendships still so aptly define the New Annapolitans.

June when we are sure to have no snow.

We remain a little ahead of where we were this time last
year, with 635 members! We also welcomed back a
couple of late renewals just before the Jan. 1
deadline. Our renewal rate for this year is about 89%.
If you know anyone who has recently moved to the
Greater Annapolis area and expressed an interest in
joining New Annapolitans, please ask her to contact
me. As most of you know, we also recently approved a
new clarification to our Standing Rules to admit
prospective members who do not fit the qualification of
having moved to the area within the past two years, but
have recently experienced a major life change like
retirement or the death of a spouse. If you know anyone
like this who you think could benefit from our vibrant
organization, ask her to submit a letter to the Board. In
addition, be sure to encourage prospective members
to visit the New Annapolitans' website at
www.annapolitans.org where links are available to
download our current newsletter and New Member
Application.

interest groups you already participate in and look for a
new one to try. Perhaps you'd enjoy a trip with the
Gadabouts or an activity with After Hours or Fun
Lunch. Also, book groups, various card games, foreign
language speaking, Great Decisions, and Community
Outreach are just a few of the interesting and educational
inside activities. Remember, interest groups are open to

Policy
When the Anne Arundel County Schools are closed or
are on delayed opening due to inclement weather, the
New Annapolitans’ monthly General Meeting will be
cancelled. Please monitor local media for school closing
announcements.

When participating in an interest group activity in a member’s home, please give the hostess a minimum of three
days’ notice for reservations or cancellations.
No reservations may be taken until an event is announced in the newsletter.
No refunds will be given for cancellations unless there are replacements from the waiting list. If there is no waiting
list or other replacements from the membership, no refund will be given.
Checks for any event should be made out to New Annapolitans.

Tables will be filled on a first-come basis. Carpools are

Note: Our trip to the Peabody Library in Baltimore for
our December meeting was a wonderful experience. The

to be missed.

Beginner Bridge is off to a great start. An e mail is sent
out on Wednesday telling where the game will be held, and

hands, consult on play and bidding. This is a very low key
group dedicated to learning and improving in a friendly
atmosphere. We welcome all. It is fun!
The February meeting of the Headlines and History Book
Club will be February 24th at the home of Judy

The Breakfast Club team met in early December, will
meet in mid-January with the final cooking session in
February. For the winter season, 18 steam-table pans
will have been filled with 72 dozen eggs, 60 pounds
chopped vegetables, 54 pounds of breakfast sausage

and 15 pounds Cheddar. Since NA is the only
organization in town that regularly provides a hot
breakfast for the "chronically homeless", these hot
breakfasts are most welcome by both residents and staff.

We are a group of couples – husband/wife/significant
other – or if you are single, just grab a partner and come
along. We usually meet for dinner during the third week
of the month – we aim for Wednesday nights and
occasionally a Sunday brunch. We try various locations,
dress styles and price points. We explore new restaurants
in the area, as well as enjoy established favorites. We meet
for a social/cocktail hour followed by a fun-filled dinner
in a group setting. Each couple orders from the menu and
pays for their dinner on a separate check.
Each month you will receive an e-mail well in advance
stating the venue, the date and the time and where to send
your “hold space” check. In order to reserve your place,
we require a check for $30 per couple payable to New
Annapolitans. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.
Your check will be returned to you at the restaurant.

This month the Foto Fun group will stay local and do a
walkabout in Annapolis, taking pictures of the Academy

NANAs enjoy walking outdoors and exploring
Annapolis and the greater metropolitan area. Walks are
usually followed by an optional stop for coffee or lunch at
a local restaurant. Each week’s walk is planned and led by
a member of the group. Once on the NANAs’ email list,
you will receive a detailed email a few days before a walk,
confirming its time and meeting place. The email notice is
the definitive schedule, not the tentative schedule
published below. If you are not yet on our mailing list, call
Ginger or Gloria before the Tuesday walk to be sure you
have the updated information.
In inclement weather, we walk in the Westfield
Annapolis Shopping Mall at 9 a.m. We meet at the
sofas in front of the interior Nordstrom entrance. If the
Anne Arundel schools are closed for a snow day, our
walk will be canceled.

We will meet Monday February 9th at Sheila Cones'
house to share reflections about our Pet Peeves.
We share "snippets" of our lives, the challenges, comedies
and celebrations. It is a perfect way to know others,
deepen your memory and be entertained. The hostess
selects the topic and everyone writes a short (2-3 page)
recollection or reflection to read aloud interpreting the
topic to fit their story. It is about the stories, not the writing
style. And your stories are available to share with family
members if you choose.

Women on Water continues to be a group of wonderful
women who love being on the water. We have enjoyed
many days sailing together in the past and hope to do so
again in the future. Currently we are looking for a member
with a sailboat to welcome as a WOW skipper, one who is
also looking for experienced sailors to join her as crew.
In the spring we will find new ways of sharing time
together on the water.

our volunteers who will answer you only if they have used
someone personally and had a good experience with them.
It's almost like talking to a group of friends over coffee.
