MARCH 22, 2015——FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
SCRIPTURE CORNER
THE NEW COVENANT
When the prophet Jeremiah coined the term “new covenant” he was actually doing something quite
radical. For the Jewish people, there was only one covenant, the one made between the Lord God and Israel
through Moses at Mount Sinai. For Jeremiah to suggest that God would somehow supersede the covenant
with a new one would have sounded audacious to Jewish ears. But in this way he is a predecessor of Jesus
who, in the Gospel of John, is continually portrayed as superseding the past, establishing the reign of God in
a new way. And in today’s Gospel passage, Jesus the “new covenant” speaks the language of His “new commandment” of love when He tells of the dying grain of wheat, and of our own need to die to self in order to
be raised with Christ. As Lent ends and we prepare to enter into Holy Week, the dying grain of wheat serves
as an excellent symbol of the kind of dying and self-sacrifice to which disciples are called, a symbol of that
new covenant written deep within our hearts.

9:00am Mass, with reception

Everything you need for your EASTER Festivities
Our Support for Youth Gift Cards Scrip Gift
Card Program
These gift cards make thoughtful, easy gifts for
teachers, coworkers, babysitters, and all the other special
people in your life. Just the right size to tuck in a special
Easter Basket for a favorite person or you can use them to
purchase a seasonal Spring Easter outfit. Some of
the local apparel retailers we sell gift cards for include:
Marshall’s, Belk, Dillard's, Sears and
Target. Stop by the sales table in the
East foyer after all Masses or by the
parish office during normal office
hours. Sales will not be available Easter Sunday but will resume the following
weekend. Thanks for your continued
support!
DOOR LOCKING For security reasons, the doors
from the back parking lot (northeast entrance doors) of the
church will be opened during the day to allow people to
enter the church for prayer. All other doors will be kept
locked. There is a door bell at the parish office entrance
from the back parking lot. Please ring the bell located on
the wall on the east side of the double doors and be patient
to give the receptionist time to come from her desk to the
doors to let you in. The doors from the church through the
hallway to the parish office will also be locked. Please
understand that we are doing this for the safety of the employees—not to keep anyone out who has genuine church
business. —–—--Fr. Cuddy, Fr. Dominic & Fr. Pat
THE NEW WEBSITE
Please take a moment to review our new website
created by our new webmaster, Charles Fallo. It’s at
www.SaintThomasLB.org. That’s the same web address
we had before. We ask ministries and groups to help make
sure that our website is up to date and informative.
MINISTRY FAIR
OUR CHURCH, OUR RESPONSIBILITY
Thank you to all who participated in the
Ministry Fair. We appreciate our many
dedicated ministers who are involved
throughout the parish. If you were not able
to attend, please look for the bulletin insert
next weekend and sign up to volunteer your
time. Thank you!
ST. THOMAS PARISH PALOOZA
Our yearly parish gathering this
year is a Parish Palooza (festival). It’s a
great time to spend time with parish members as a family. There is no charge for entrance. Tickets will be sold to purchase
food, drink items and games etc. For $50
you can purchase a chance to win a new car! Our fundraiser
this year is a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze LS donated by Turan Foley
Chevrolet-Buick-Cadillac on Hwy 49 in Gulfport. It’s on the
Parish property. Tickets for the car have been mailed to all
members of the Parish but more are available at the church office.
We need your help! If you are part of the Condolence
Committee, we ask your help to provide desserts. Committee
members can bring them to the parish hall on Saturday, April
18th between 9 and 10. If you have any questions. please contact Margaret Chapman at [email protected] or 228596-1587
Volunteers are needed to help monitor the games, sell
tickets after Mass April 11-12th and bakers to donate cakes for
the cake walk. If you own a business and can donate a prize or
a gift certificate, it would be greatly appreciated. We also need
money donations to purchase the food items, children’s games,
rental of tents, etc. Please put any donation amount in an envelope, mark it “Parish Palooza” and drop it in the weekly collection basket during Mass. All are welcome to donate NEW
items that would be suitable for the silent auction. For example
– last year Parish members donated sports memorabilia, beautiful ceramic pieces, holiday wreaths, quilts, fishing trips,
etc. Donors will be recognized in our parish bulletin and if a
business donation, also at the event where your business card
will be displayed with items donated. A list of donors will also
be included on our website. Contact Linda Shirk at 228 547
7921 or [email protected] if you have a question or please
drop off your item at the Parish office.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 18th from
11am – 4pm. Bring your portable chairs and plan for a afternoon of fun! Remember all proceeds benefit our Support for
Youth Ministry.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL TUITION LOWERED
Yes, there is a way to lower the rate of tuition for
a family who wishes to enroll their children in Grades K12 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Elementary School, St.
Patrick High School and Our Lady Academy. There is a
form available at the school office for families to apply
for parish subsidy. The completed form should be turned
in to the parish office for processing.
Eligibility for parish subsidy—the lower rate of
tuition—is based on the family being registered members
of the parish, attending Mass here at St. Thomas regularly, and making regular contributions to the financial support of the parish by using the church support envelopes
mailed to your home or the electronic method of contributing (if you want to sign up for the electronic method,
please call the parish office).
We are well aware that tuition in Catholic
schools is expensive—we believe it is well worth the sacrifices made by the families who choose to have their
children educated in the Catholic school system.
