EL-Sakran Professor, American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates Abstract: Poster presentation can be viewed as a pedagogical tool and as having considerable agency in promoting and enhancing students‟ professional communication skills and meta-cognitive capacity. It places emphasis on team-role behaviors, giving credence to personal, inter-personal and team learning. This study intends to fill in a gap through attempting to make available to readers and educators in the field of teaching English communication skills at tertiary level information on poster design, defence and assessment. This information is based on practical applications of the use of poster presentations by engineering students in a professional communication course for engineers where there is a substantial focus is on poster design, poster rhetorical structure, use of visuals, managing the presentation; coordination between team members, transition from one member into another, and written and oral communication skills. S004 Taboo, or Not Taboo: Sociolinguistic Analysis of the Chinese Word 「幹」gan‟Fuck‟ in Taiwanese Teenagers‟ Community Zi-Yu Tai Graduate student, National Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan Abstract: From a sociolinguistic point of view, the Chinese word 「幹」gan‟fuck‟, used frequently in Taiwanese teenagers‟ discourse community, had undergone great changes. However, there was relatively little literature focusing on teenagers‟ obscene language since it was despised as a taboo topic to be explored in Chinese culture. Therefore, the study aimed to conduct a sociolinguistic analysis of the Chinese word 「 幹 」 gan‟fuck‟. Two-year field observations, in-depth interviews, interactive qualitative inquiries, and documents were employed to collect data. Multiple-method strategy was employed to corroborate these data, which was further analyzed by the researcher using triangulation. The findings revealed that in addition to the traditional opprobrious meaning, 「幹」gan‟fuck‟ received a more neutral and even positive interpretation. It was used to express positive personal feelings, start and smooth a conversation, illustrate the intimidate relationship between interlocutors, seek peer recognition, and establish solidarity. Even if this word was used to reproach someone, 4 2015 IEDRC LOS ANGELES CONFERENCES S005 BE00004 here “someone” often referred to the speaker him/herself, rather than the traditional referent “addressee”. These novice meanings and functions of 「幹」gan‟fuck‟ were unique to the teenagers‟ discourse community. Factors contributing to these changes were: (1) release of pressure; (2) peer recognition; (3) high frequency of input; (4) attempt to challenge the “taboo” in Chinese society; (5) inadequate communicative competence; (6) inadequate rhetoric proficiency. It was suggested that the adults should provide teenagers with more appropriate language input, instead of despising or punishing their opprobrious verbal expression. Classroom Discourse in Second Language Acquisition and Learning Ponnammal Aruna Devi University of Madras, India Abstract: A classroom talk can do wonders in language learning. It is not a new topic for discussion in Second Language Acquisition but in teacher-fronted classroom talk gains pedagogical significance since through the discourse the teacher aids the learners in getting into the structure and like causative sentences when exposed as in listening to stories. But equally the unplanned moment-to moment unfolding of talk lays bare many discourse functions that help the learners get insight into the communicative aspect. A teacher can proffer a social and linguistic ambience in a classroom. The input from the teacher and the output from the learners can serve as a rich material for language acquisition. Acquisition and learning can be viewed as socialization as well as cognitive process. This paper considers the social and cognitive aspects in the process of language learning and acquisition and establishes how a classroom discourse can aid both the process. But demarcating a clear line between the two processes is not the aim of this paper. The predictability of carry trade returns and foreign exchange risk: using a panel smooth transition regression analysis Mei-Se Chien, Chien-Chiang Lee, and Yu-Wei Fan Master Students, National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, Taiwan Abstract: This paper employs the panel smooth transition regression (PSTR) model of Gonz´alez (2005) to investigate the explaining ability of foreign exchange risk measured on the return to the carry trade strategy. The empirical evidence is based on the framework of Cenedese et al. (2014), whereby the measure of foreign exchange risk is the market variance that can be decomposed into two components: the cross-sectional aggregate variance and the cross-sectional average correlation of all bilateral exchange rates. The sample data include the spot exchange rates and forward exchange rates of 48 economies from 1997 to 2014. Our main findings are as follows. First, strong evidence shows that there are significant intertemporal non-linear relationships between the excess returns and variance measures of the carry trade. Second, there are similar results of PSTR for the cases of the global portfolio and the developing economies portfolio, confirming that the relationship between risk and market return is positive for the first and second 5 2015 IEDRC LOS ANGELES CONFERENCES BE00008 BE00007 regimes while it is negative for the third regime which different from aggregate variance level. Third, the results of PSTR also support that the relationship between risk and market return is positive for the advanced economies portfolio, but the coefficients are insignificant. In fact, the coefficients of the advanced economies portfolio are far smaller than the coefficients of the other two portfolios, implying that investors will seek smaller risk-taking returns for the advanced economies portfolio. Fourth and finally, for the global portfolio and the developing economies portfolio, the coefficients of average correlation show that the expected excess return will increase for the first and third regimes in different aggregate variance level, while it will decrease if the excess returns are more correlated between other economies in portfolio. As to the advanced economies portfolio, the average correlation results are similar with the other two portfolios, but are insignificant Short Term IPO Returns in Stock Exchange of Thailand: The Study in 2003-2013 Marisa Laokulrach Lecturer, Assumption University, Thailand Abstract: This study examines the short term performance of Initial Public Offering (IPO) in capital market of Thailand from 2003-2013. The daily price data is used in this study to identify the short term returns of IPO of the first trading day until the day that abnormal return cannot be earned. The results confirm the abnormal returns of the first trading day of IPO and also identify that their outperformance returns remain until day 246 after the market. IPO of four industries which are financial, service, resources, and technology outperform the market, while the other four industries which are agro and food, consumer products, industrials, and property and construction do not provide significant abnormal returns. Malaysia-Singapore-Thailand Capital Accumulation Growth (MST-CAG) Suppanunta Romprasert Assistant Professor, Assumption University, Thailand Abstract: Paper has presented ideal of capital accumulation growth by using Solow Growth Model for Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand case. Based on past 10 years by those three countries, the economies have expanded. The investment on infrastructure also shows as a part of country‟s sustained economic growth such as telecommunications, electricity and ports. In the same time countries are experiencing a growing in shortage of skilled technical personnel. Then, paper‟s objective is to examine whether growth of countries is due to countries‟ capital accumulation. This objective brings to research question that “Why do developing countries (Malaysia and Thailand) grow at the same rates as developed one (Singapore)?” Scope of research is started at 1990 and ended at 2013. After analyzing the 24-year data collected and simulating those data with Solow growth model and basic model. Paper shows results as higher savings rate and higher gross fixed capital formation per worker lead to higher investment per person, and pull up steady-state level of capital. Moreover, increasing on literacy rate represents human capital that leads to growth of 6 2015 IEDRC LOS ANGELES CONFERENCES BE00016 BE00023 H107 gross domestic product. Paper also benefits policymakers who are trying to implement such a policy to speed up economy in terms of economic growth and higher standard of livings including the well-being of people. Reserve Holdings and Macroeconomic Variables: an Empirical Dynamic Analysis in Egyptian Economy Osama M. Badr and Ahmed F. El-khadrawi Lecturer, Damietta University, Egypt Abstract: This study aims to investigate the long run relationship of international reserves holding in Egypt using the buffer stock model presented by Frenkel and Jovanovic (1981). The study employed quarterly data from 1990Q1 to 2012Q4. A robust time series technique Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) was used which is applicable irrespective of whether the regressors are purely I (0) or purely I (1). The evidence derived from the ARDL approach support the fact that the scale variables and the volatility variable have significant effects on the reserve demand. The evidence also demonstratesthat both exchange rate flexibility and opportunity cost does not have any significant impact on the reserve demandin Egypt. Prof. Dr., Selcuk University, Konya, Turkey Abstract: Businesses went beyond their boundaries with a great effort along with globalisation to be able to obtain a place in the world trade. During this process, international commercial integration went into a rapid change. Concentration of the processes in commercial activities increased the constituting of crimes knowingly or unknowingly. Law failed in the solution of criminal activities. This resulted in the emergence of the concept of forensic accounting in the western countries, particularly in the USA. Forensic accounting came into prominence and forensic accountancy appeared as a new profession. The profession defined as forensic accountancy, serves to forensic authorities for the detection of financial crimes, and therefore contributes to the operation of law in a fast and proper way. The present study examines the development and importance of forensic accountancy within the global economy. 7 2015 IEDRC LOS ANGELES CONFERENCES 15:00–15:30 CoffeeBreak SESSION–2 Venue: Aviation IV Session Chair: Prof. Beng Soo Ong Time: 15:30-17:30 ID Management BE00009 H105 TitleAuthor‟s name A Brand Premium Pricing Model for Digital Music Market Tobey H. Ko and Henry Y. K. Lau Ph.D Candidate, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Abstract: This paper proposes an alternative pricing scheme for the digital music market, where the musician's differentiated characteristics such as fame, popularity, and listener share - in the form of consumer's brand premium multiplier - is incorporated into the pricing decision by the record label. We consider consumers are differentiated by two types of characteristics: the brand premium multiplier towards the musician, and the general preference to music. We argue that in the co-existence of free music streaming, the retail price of a musical product should be allowed to vary in a manner that reflects the differences in market environment and the musician's characteristics. The results of the proposed model provide a toolkit for the recording industry to effectively price its products in a market that is constantly evolving.
