The large fishing vessels you see on Okanagan Lake are part of the Okanagan Lake Mysis
Fishery.MysisshrimpwereintroducedintoOkanaganLakeinthe1960stoprovideanadditional
foodsourceforRainbowTroutandenhancethefishery.However,theseshrimpcompetewith
youngkokaneeforthesamefoodsource(phytoplankton)andtheirintroductionhasresulted
innegativeimpactstokokaneestocks.TheOkanaganLakeMysisFisheryisanexperimental
initiative,ledbytheProvince,toinvestigatethefeasabilityoflarge-scaleremovalofMysisfrom
OkanaganLake,asamethodtoimprovein-lakerearingconditionsforkokanee.
TheprimaryperiodofoperationisMay-October(basedonproductivity&catch),howeverthe
fisherycanoccuryearround.Fishingeffortsarefocusedonthenorthendofthelake,between
FintryProvincialParkandCameronPoint;wherethehighestconcentrationofMysisshrimpcan
befound.Todate,>657metrictonsofMysishavebeenharvestedfromOkanaganLake,with
anaverageannualremovalof73metrictons.NotonlyistheOkanaganLakeMysisFishery
helpingtorecoverkokaneestocks,butitalsoprovidessignificanteconomicbenefitstothelocal
community.
