THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK SUNDAY – 22ND MARCH, 2015 TODAY’S TOPIC: THE BENEFITS OF HIS VICTORY SUB-THEME: JESUS EARNS VICTORY FOR US READINGS: Psalm 22:23-34; Jeremiah 31:31-34; Heb 9:11- 14; John 12:20-32; Psalm 28; Lamentation 3:19-23; Luke 23:26-49. In the name of our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ we welcome you to this worship service this Sunday. It is another wonderful privilege to be among those that will worship Him today and to partake in His abundant blessing. May this season of lent bring spiritual rejuvenation to us all. May the Almighty God remember you all in all areas of your expectation and give peace all round. Our focus this week in the Liturgy is on the topic: “The Benefits of His Victory” As believers in Christ, we know that Jesus Christ died on the cross for people‘s sins. But many do not know that the forgiveness of our sins is not the end of the story. The benefits of the cross are much more: Not only has Jesus freed believers from all condemnation, but we have a whole new identity, according to John 1:12 and 2 Corinthians 5:17. He has given us purpose, power, and hope to live here on Earth now! 5. Eternal life is not just about Heaven; it starts as soon as you accept Christ. Jesus‘ purpose was to preach and to heal—and now, so is yours. The source of His power to do these things was the Holy Spirit, and you have been given the same Holy Spirit that lived in Jesus. By his death on the cross Jesus gained victory over the devil. This victory is for the benefit of man. Here‘s a summary of the core things Christ accomplished in his death. The self-substitution of Christ for man‘s sin is the heart of the Cross. Because of His death at Calvary, Christ allows believers to enjoy the eternal benefits of these central truths: 1. Expiation Expiation means the removal of our sin and guilt. Christ‘s death removes our sin and guilt. The guilt of our sin was taken away from us and placed on Christ, who discharged it by his death. Thus, in John 1:29, John the Baptist calls Jesus ―the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.‖ Jesus takes away, that is, expiates, our sins. Likewise, Isaiah 53:6 says, ―The Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on him,‖ and Hebrews 9:26 says ―He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.‖ 2. Propitiation Whereas expiation refers to the removal of our sins, propitiation refers to the removal of God‘s wrath. By dying in our place for our sins, Christ removed the wrath of God that we justly deserved. In fact, it goes even further: a propitiation is not simply a sacrifice that removes wrath, but a sacrifice that removes wrath and turns it into favor. The wrath of God against sin was fully vented on His own Son at the cross. Christians never need to fear angering God. Our sin is forgiven, and even God‘s chastisement for sinful behavior is motivated by compassion. 3. Reconciliation Whereas expiation refers to the removal of our sins, and propitiation refers to the removal of God‘s wrath, reconciliation refers to the removal of our alienation from God. Because of our sins, we were alienated - separated - from God. Christ‘s death removed this alienation and thus reconciled us to God. We see this in Romans 5:10-11: ―For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.‖ Once enemies, God and man, are now friends. The victory of the Cross made a permanent change possible between formerly alienated man and God. The right Man is now on our side, and we are on His. 4. Redemption Our sins had put us in captivity from which we need to be delivered. The price that is paid to deliver someone from captivity is called a ―ransom.‖ To say that Christ‘s death accomplished redemption for us means that it accomplished deliverance from our captivity through the payment of a price. There are three things we had to be released from: the curse of the law, the guilt of sin, and the power of sin. Christ redeemed us from each of these. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law: ―Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us‖ (Galatians 3:13-14). Christ redeemed us from the guilt of our sin. We are ―justified as a gift by his grace, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus‖ (Romans 3:24). 6. Sunday: Venue: 7.00a.m. & 10.00a.m. Services Youth Chapel (2nd Floor, Adetiloye House) C. Youth Fellowship every Saturday by 3.00p.m. Christ redeemed us from the power of sin: ―knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your fathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ‖ (1 Peter 1:18-19). Christ‘s death purchased us out of the slavery of sin. His shed blood paid the penalty of death and ransomed us from sin and evil. We have been delivered from the kingdom of Satan and placed into the kingdom of God‘s Son. 5. Justification The word ―justified‖, in the sense of sinful human beings being justified by God, is used about 34 times in the New Testament. It was used by Jesus in the Parable of the Publican and the Tax Collector. The tax collector, who admitted his sinfulness and cast himself on the mercy of God, not the self-righteous Pharisee, ―went home justified before God‖ (Luke 18:9-14). Paul obviously prefers this word to the idea of forgiveness, as it includes forgiveness but means much more. It is a word that comes from the law courts, Its use of the word was also taken from the throne room as it goes beyond any conception of human justice. George Carey, in his book on the cross, The Gate of Glory,[32a] says: By God‘s grace we no longer are guilty before God. Christ‘s death secured our verdict, releasing us from the sentence of death. He declares us righteous and credits His righteousness to our account. 6. Defeat of the Powers of Darkness Christ‘s death was a defeat of the power of Satan. ―He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him‖ (Colossians 3:15). Satan‘s only weapon that can ultimately hurt people is unforgiven sin. Christ took this weapon away from him for all who would believe, defeating him and all the powers of darkness in his death by, as the verse right before this says, ―having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross‖ (Colossians 2:13-14). In summary, the Bible tells us to ―forget not all His benefits‖ (Psalm 103:2). Here are just a few of the many benefits of the cross for your life as a follower of Christ. May you rejoiced and be encouraged as you consider each one: I am reconciled to God (2 Corinthians 5:18) I am redeemed and forgiven (Ephesians 1:7-8) I am a child of God (1 John 3:1-2) I am a saint (Ephesians 1:1; Philippians 1:1) I am Christ‘s friend (John 15:15) I am a citizen of Heaven (Philippians 3:20) I have eternal life (John 5:24; 1 John 5:11-13) I have received the Spirit of God (1 Corinthians 2:12) I have been made alive with Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17) I am God‘s workmanship (Ephesians 2:10) I am a temple of God (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19) I am blessed with EVERY spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3) ―Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.‖ – Romans 5:1. 14. 7. 6.
