Therefore, it is in the fitness of things that Hindi speaking candidates be given 15% of tickets for the coming NMMC election,” the letter goes on. Produced by David Barron, Simon Kinberg and Allison Shearmur for Walt Disney Pictures, the story is inspired by the fairy tale Cinderella by Charles Perrault (with some references from the Brothers Grimm’s version of the story). Although not a direct remake, it borrows many elements from Walt Disney’s 1950 animated musical film of the same name. The film stars Lily James in the title role as Ella (“Cinderella”) with Richard Madden as Prince Charming, Cate Blanchett as Lady Tremaine (the Wicked Stepmother), Sophie McShera as Drisella, Holliday Grainger as Anastasia and Helena Bonham Carter as The Fairy Godmother. We begin with a loving family, a mother who dies young of a fatal disease and a father who remarries to provide a surrogate mother for Ella. He dies on one of many business voyages, leaving her in the hands of Lady Tremaine (nuanced Cate Blanchett), and that explains why he doesn’t stop her mistreatment of the girl: He never sees it. Ella, played by Lily James, upholds her promise to her parents to keep her courage high and remain kind. When she meets a hunter in the woods, not knowing he’s the prince, he asks about her living conditions. “They treat me as well as they are able,” she says diplomatically, thinking of her step-family’s emotional problems. Branagh and Weitz give Lady Tremaine a backstory, too: She deeply loved her first husband, saw him die early, then married Ella’s father for financial security. She’s a bitter, aging woman saddled with stupid, untalented daughters (Holliday Grainger and Sophie McShera), and her second husband never loved her for herself. The fairy godmother (Helena Bonham Carter), who narrates but appears in just one scene, provides the moral: “Perhaps the greatest risk any of us will ever take (is) to be seen as we really are.” Glass slippers and lizards turned into footmen mean little, unless we’re worth loving after the enchantment evaporates. The godmother casts her spell on a pumpkin, which rocks and swells so violently it threatens to crush Cinderella before exploding to reveal a golden coach. Its rapid disintegration at the last stroke of midnight, as the coachman turns back into a goose and the horses into mice. Those mice, who chatter to each other unintelligibly work to help Cinderella. But Perrault has the final say, with his message of forgiveness: Cinderella sends her step-family off in the company of the wealthy Grand Duke (Stellan Skarsgärd), who had opposed her marriage on political grounds. Even they may be entitled to happiness in another kingdom; in this “Cinderella,” everyone has a chance at redemption. CMYK 6 Issue : 268 [email protected] 20 March, 2015 www.newsband.in 20 March, 2015 Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka was a good move During his two-day, four-city visit to Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi signalled in more ways than one that he would like to flag off a new start to India-Sri Lanka ties, that could put them on track to the “golden chapter”. Modi has done well to focus on strengthening India’s historical links with Sri Lanka, invoking the ancient ethnic, linguistic and religious ties that bind them. Gently offering a hand of friendship while reminding Colombo that its promises to the Tamil minority must be kept, would serve India’s strategic interests well. India’s engagement with neighboring countries had reached a new low, with most of the countries feeling betrayed by Indian and they were going under Chinese influence. Historically, India was somewhat unenthusiastic to cultivating a mutually rewarding and enduring relationship with its immediate neighbours and other countries in Asia with whom it had no strategic, territorial or serious trade related issues, with the exception of Pakistan, and China and to a lesser extent with Bangla Desh. As far as Sri Lanka was concerned, India adopted a ‘blow-hot, blowcold ‘ approach, as per the evolving political, security, and terrorism related needs in both the countries. China exploited this fluid situation, in pursuit of its strategic goals via economic route, much to the disadvantage of India. The Bharatiya Janata Party government with Modi as the PM recognized these weaknesses. The newness thus imparted in our foreign policy with our immediate neighbours and other friendly nations in Asia will go a long way to check Pakistan and reduce the impact of China factor in the region. Modi is doing his best to raise India’s profile abroad and ‘drum’ up business for India’s economy. For too long India’s foreign policy and trade with neighbouring countries has been dormant. Modi wants to build strong economic, cultural and strategic ties with friendly and brotherly neighbours. Let’s hope that he succeeds. India will have to actively engage Sri Lanka and win trust. China’s growing investments in infrastructure and its increasing presence in the Indian Ocean will have to be stalled for maritime security. Moreover minority Tamil’s rights will be safeguarded provided the two countries are on the right footing. Modi should be congratulated on doing a fantastic job during his visit to Sri Lanka. He has started the Railway Line, constructed house for the Tamil speaking population suffering from ravages of war, smoothened the way for a two-way Tourist Traffic and given an assurance of continued Economic Assistance to Sri Lanka. Fantastic job! Thus Modi has done it again with his impeccable simplicity and straight forwardness. His visit to hand over India sponsored projects to the SL Tamil community and its people was a nice gesture and will give much more confidence to the Tamil Community in SL and people in TN too. India will now play either Australia or Pakistan in the last four stage in Sydney next week. Batting first, India compiled a overwhelming total of 302 for six in their allotted 50 overs after being restricted to 155 for 3 at the end of the 35th over by Bangladesh who showed they were no pushovers with bowling and fielding in their first quarter-final appearance. Opener Rohit Sharma (who is the only Indian to have scored two double ODI centuries however averaged 31.80 in this edition of World Cup -159 runs from six innings) overcame his patchy form on the tour and chose the big occasion to come good again. The stylish opener, who last scored a century (138 vs Australia in Tri series at the very same venue) opened his account with a well timed boundary through covers off Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza in the very first ball of their innings. He stitched a 75-run stand with Shikhar Dhawan that laid a solid foundation for a later acceleration. Rohit went on to complete his maiden century (137 off 126 balls, highlighted by 14 boundaries and three sixes) with a couple in the company of south paw Suresh Raina who chipped in a with a quick fire 65 to add 122 runs (came together at 115 for 3 in the 28th over) for the fourth wicket in 95 balls which included (50 runs in the mandatory five over batting power play). Raina however perished as he top-edged Mortaza high in the air only to be caught by wicket keeper Mushfiqur. Rohit however continued to build on the innings even though he lost his skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (6) to Bangladesh most successful bowler medium pacer Taskin Ahmed (3/69) but latter fell to the same bowler after he smashing him for six over deep mid-wicket and boundary to square-leg. Short of batting practice Ravindra Jadeja however took his team past 300 with an unbeaten 10-ball 23, Bangladesh who have been one of the most improved sides in cricket and even knocked out England to make the quarter-finals however found India too hot and were bowled out for 193 in by the end of the 44th over even though their openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes came out all guns blazing. They accumulated 31 off the first six overs but when they fell in successive balls in the next over bowled by medium pacer Umesh Yadav (4/ 31) the run-chase was doomed. Our bowlers who were struggling have improved a lot bowling teams out for the seventh time in this World Cup. It’s difficult to pin-point how it changed. Cricket has a lot of abstracts, but we need to do a lot of the small things right. Put in the intensity and hope it all turns out.” Man of the match Rohit Sharma who notched his maiden World Cup century and seventh overall said “I wanted to bat as long as possible and put the team into a good situation and the bowlers did a fantastic job Batting at the top of the order, it’s important to get big hundreds and I want to make the most of it when I go out to bat and I’m happy with the way it turned out. We played as a team. Bowlers are taking wickets, batsmen are scoring runs, and we just need to take this momentum into the semis.” Brief scores: India - 302 for 6 in 50 overs (Rohit Sharma 137 (126b, 14x4s, 3x6s), Suresh Raina 65 (57b,7x4s, 1x6), Shikhar Dhawan 30, Ravindra Jadeja 23*; Taskin Ahmed 3/69) beat Bangladesh -193 all out in 44.6 overs (Nasir Hossain 35 (34b, 6x4s), Sabbir Rahman 30, Soumya Sarkar 29; Umesh Yadav 4/31, Mohammed Shami 2/37, Ravindra Jadeja 2/42) by 109 runs and 30 balls to spare.
