J.L. Kellogg School of Management Marketing Department Donald P. Jacobs Center 2001 Sheridan Road Evanston, Illinois 60208-2001 Brian M. Weller Assistant Professor of Finance [email protected] Phone 847-467-6176 Fax 847-491-5719 www.kellogg.northwestern.edu March 24, 2015 The Kellogg Finance Department is looking for full-time research assistants to work for a minimum of one year. The job entails close collaboration on a number of projects in finance with several members of the department. The starting date is negotiable, but it should be no later than July 1, 2015. The ideal candidate will have the interest and dedication to work with department faculty to advance academic research in finance. We are looking for someone interested in economics and finance who preferably has completed some coursework in economics and statistics. However, we welcome those with limited backgrounds who are looking for additional economics exposure. In either case this individual must be capable of meticulous and self-directed work. Knowledge of Japanese is a plus, but not required. Potential research duties vary, but may include: • • Programming in Stata, MATLAB, Excel, or similar packages. You will primarily work with empiricists, and a mutual objective will be to become familiar with datasets and data manipulation techniques. Construction of spreadsheets and charts. Finance involves building spreadsheets to answer problems and charts to communicate those answers. Some proficiency in Excel, Stata, and MATLAB software is desirable; an ability to learn more where necessary is required. • Data collection from paper and electronic sources. Data work will sometimes require cleaning and checking the data for internal and external consistency. It may also include tracking down text—either entire papers or references in papers. This may involve work in the libraries, the public web, or licensed web resources (e.g. Bloomberg or Compustat). • Editing of research papers, public talks, and teaching notes. This will include reading for both grammar and in some cases content. What you don’t know about finance (which may be a lot), but need to know, members of the department will teach you. We need someone with a strong interest in learning finance along the way, but not necessarily someone who already knows it. This opportunity offers additional training and potential co-authorship (in year two) for those interested in pursuing academic positions in economics or finance. In addition, the skills emphasized in our work have dual-use for industry jobs in finance. We pay an annual salary of $48,000 and provide standard benefits such as health insurance. If interested, please email to Brian Weller ([email protected]) with the following: 1. A cover letter briefly describing your career or academic goals; 2. A CV; 3. A complete undergraduate and graduate transcript, if applicable. Note for international applicants: Kellogg will provide the research associate with the necessary J-1 Research Scholar visa, subject to USCIS rules and regulations.
