A LIFE OF PRAISE
Psalm 34:1
I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in
my mouth.
A wise person said "when life hands you some lemons, make
lemonade." The meaning is simple; lemons are sour but, with that
fruit, a refreshing drink can be made. The question is not whether we
will be given our share of lemons, we will. The question is what we
will do with them.
The author had been given some lemons. There were things that
caused him to fear (v.4). He knew about the poor man who cried to the
Lord in his time of trouble (v.6). He knew about the brokenhearted and
those who are "crushed in spirit" (v.18). "Many are the afflictions of
the righteous" (v.19).
How do you respond to life's lemons? Do we become bitter? Do
we constantly complain about the unfairness of life? Do we turn away
from God? Psalm 34 assures us of the presence of God in our lives.
"The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and His ears are open
to their cry"
(v.15). Deliverance is promised to the righteous (v.19). Psalm 34
challenges us to "taste and see that the Lord is good" (v.8).
How, then, do we respond to the difficult things of this life? The
tone for the whole Psalm is set in the first three verses. The child of
God must develop a life of praise. I can either focus on the hard times
or I can remember the Lord is good. Let us chose the latter. "O
magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together" (Psalm
34:3).
