About Rishikesh
Rishikesh is a holy city on the banks of the River Ganges. This holy city, a part of Dehradun district is called the
Page 1/11
Devbhoomi and is considered as the doorway to the Himalayas. Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, this place in
Northern India attracts huge number of tourists and pilgrims from all parts of the country to offer their prayers at this holy
site.
History of Rishikesh
Ancient history suggests the presence of Rishikesh in the legendary “Kedarkhand” region. In mythological scriptures
Lord Rama meditated and practiced penance at this place after he executed Ravana. Lord Rama’s younger brother,
Laxmana, crossed the Ganga from here due to which the popular Laxman Jhula was constructed.
Originally, Laxman Jhula was built from jute rope. This rope bridge was quite unsafe and was replaced with a stronger
iron- rope bridge in 1889. Due to floods in 1924 the bridge was damaged and finally replaced with a stronger
suspension bridge.
Things to do in Rishikesh
Rishikesh offers several tourist attractions right from religious locations to thrilling adventure sport activities. Religious
places include Gita Bhawan, Nilkanth Mahadev, Triveni Ghat and Swarga Ashram. A walk on the Laxman Jhula is a
major activity.
Rishikesh embodies many popular yoga and meditation centres. There are private universities, which have short-term
yoga courses that attract international tourists and visitors. Rishikesh is sometimes also referred to as the World Capital
of Yoga, as it is a perfect place to learn and study yoga, meditation and other spiritual practices.
Adventure sports and trekking also lure tourists to Rishikesh from all parts of the country. White water rafting is the main
adventure sport that is popular amongst water sports. River crossing is yet another challenging sport in which the
individual is supposed to cross the river sliding on a single rope just above the heavy water currents of River Ganga.
There are many Rishikesh holiday packages specifically targeted towards providing such services to tourists.
Other surrounding districts are Tehri Garhwal and Pauri Garhwal, whose governing agencies have brought a ban on the
use of plastic bags and selling of alcohol in the city, thus making it an alcohol free district. Another holy city, Haridwar is
just 25 km away, which is also located on the Ganges.
Food & Shopping in Rishikesh
Food in Rishikesh is a vegetarian’s delight. Non-vegetarian is banned in the pilgrim town. However, it hasn’t affected
Rishikesh tourism as the town boasts of cafes and restaurants that serve health food as well as traditional Indian
delicacies like samosas, chaats among other street foods and meals. As for shopping, apart from souvenirs and
religious artifacts, Rishikesh does not have much to offer.
Travelling to Rishikesh
Rishikesh can be reached by air, rail and road. The nearest airport to the destination is Jolly Grant Airport, which is
around 18 km away, in Dehradun. Delhi Airport is the nearest international airport. Taxis are available from both the
airports to reach Rishikesh.
Rishikesh has its own railway station and is well connected to the rest of the country, especially to the northern part.
Trains are available frequently from Delhi, Dehradun, Mumbai and other cities. By bus, the destination can be reached
from nearby places like Haridwar, Dehradun, Pauri etc. Buses are run by the state as well as private operators.
Located at the foothills of the Himalayas, Rishikesh has a pleasant climate throughout the year. Those interested in
activities like white water rafting can visit from September to April.
Accommodation options in Rishikesh
Pilgrims and adventure seekers alike have many hotel options in Rishikesh. This includes budget hotels, tents and
camps popular among backpackers as well as guesthouses and lodges preferred by groups.

Featured review about Rishikesh
Better be prepared to stay in the wild.
"Ask any grandparent and they will say "rishikesh, ganga snan? " " arrey did you visit the temple? " " go to chotiwala".
Yeah well, listen to them. Then go online and check out their white river rafting and camping groups. The experience
simply blows your mind.
But before you go for the camp and rafting, do book your guest house. Rishikesh provides a lot of decent guest houses.
They start from 750/- for double bed per night. Reason being, after a solid 4 hrs of being in water all you want to do is
change into dry clothes. Having to hunt for a decent place at that point is more on the verge of the desperation and you
can easily be fleeced.
Keep aside two days only for camping and rafting and 2 days to explore the town. It's beautiful. The Laxman jhoola
market place is simply treat to your senses and don't forget to visit german bakery (for the view and pastry only) and
60's cafe delmar, hey the beatles were here, If you don't know who they were, google them :P
Its a tourist town and everyone is ready to earn bucks, bargain big time! Don't be fooled by kids insisting to take you to
best shop, look around, explore. Last, be a early riser cause the whole town closes pretty early. By 7:30 pm it feels as if
people have deserted this place!
All in all its a town one feels like visiting again and again:)" - Chetna Mathur, Mumbai, 2 months ago
Nature Calling
"Rishikesh ( Rishi means Sage & Kesh means Hair) or the hair of sage. According to ancient Indian scriptures some
renowned sages had washed their hairs in the river Ganga which flows down rigidly here. Rishikesh is a quintessential
destination for each & every tourist cum traveler across the globe because of her perpetual peace protruding from the
serene Shivalik mountain range & the mighty river Ganga flows between the heart of the Rishikesh city. As Rishikesh is
a holy & pilgrimage place, she is also famous for Yoga kendras as it is also called "The World capital of Yoga" &
Ayurvedic treatment centres for a very long time. Those travelers who are fond of this kind of activities must do a visit to
this perennial place at least once in a life-time.
There are lot of famous temples adorned this serene place like Neelkanth Baba Temple, Paramarth Niketan, Geeta
Bhawan, Tera Manzil, Triveni Ghat ( famous for evening AARTI at the bank of river Ganges) etc. The Laxman Jhula &
Giant Lord Shiva statue (washed away in the recent Uttarakhand flood) is the most attracting zones of the Rishikesh.
River rafting in Ganga always boost the adrenaline zeal of the travelers. The other famous nearest sight-seeing places
are Haridwar, Dehradoon, Char-Dham, Nainital etc. I have already visited 3 times to Rishikesh & if God allows me then I
want to visit at least once in a year to remove the fatigue, tensions of life by the grace of her calm natural sounds. Last
year me & my wife visited to the Rishikesh in the Durga Puja time.
As Rishikesh is a holy place, so only the vegetarian meals are available to eat. Paneer items are quite exquisite with
rice or roti. The market lying besides both the end of river Ganga offers very valuable and antique books, gems &
pearls, bags, telescope, collectibles which is awesome for presenting as a souvenir.
One can inculcate the divine tranquility by sitting beside the Ganga in the dawn. Its fresh air with divine essence makes
one to forget the worries of life. Every individual should offer eatable items to the cows scattered & roaming around the
city for taking blessings from the almighty.
Rishikesh is reachable by all the medium of air, rail & road. The best mode to reach Rishikesh is the Super-Fast
Shatabdi Express Trains which runs twice a day from New Delhi Railway Station. Buses are plying all the time from New

Delhi and other nearby cities of Rishikesh. The nearest airport to Rishikesh is Jolly Grant Airport situated at about 12
k.m. from Rishikesh. Tourist can visit Rishikesh at any time during the year. As Rishikesh is a cold place, one should
never forget to carry warm clothes with him/her and a very good camera to catch the scenic beauty & memories to be
cherish. Avoid alcohol during the stay at Rishikesh. Wish everyone a nice trip to RISHIKESH!" - Mrinal Saikia,

Would buy a Summer Home
"Rishikesh is 20ish km above Haridwar. If you love adventure water sports and the soul soothing river water just for the
sake of it. This is the destination for you.Sadly, Rishikesh is too commercialized for my taste, could be a good thing for a
lot of people as it spells a large variety of all kinds of hotel from cheap crammed ones to five stars(mostly in Haridwar)
and all kind of shopping and eating spots . There are rafting professionals every possible where. From hotels to
individual service providers. This is the heart of rishikesh and should definitely be the main activity of your itinerary.
The chances of bumping into foreigners and Godmen are way more than residents, which is kinda interesting. The city
people seem rude and arrogant all in all. The magic is further away from the main city.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Given a lot of foreigners visiting all during the year. There are amazing restaurants all
over the place. From small cafes to big dining air conditioned restaurants, you have a lot to choose from. One of my
latest discoveries and favorites is Hotel Tattv ,right in the tapovan market. It has to-die-for food and beverages
(Indian/Italian/Chinese). Another one of my favorites eating joint is Hotel Tip-top .. Its a restaurant with indian food and
the rest obvious eatables. Its clean , light, tasty and I specifically enjoy the easy going hospitality.
The City is divided in two by beautiful Ganga and connected by Ram/Laxman Jhula. Its a whole different world in the two
halves. I have during both my visits stayed on the tapovan side i.e without crossing the Jhulas' . Its better to discover the
other side and all thats in between on foot. En route to laxman jhula from tapovan are a handful of temples and ashrams
which are almost always crowded. Autos can be hired uptill there. A a lot of interesting clothing shops also cover the
entire route. A must see for people with irregular taste for clothes. A lot of temporary stalls and carts adorn the side walk
mostly selling rosary and wooden items, bags and hats..quite cheap..and you must bargain. Something to keep in mind
would be that dont shop on your way down the path but while coming back (stalls close up after sun set)
Activities & things to do: River rafting ( A must ! ) Also, do not miss the cliff jumping spot and the maggie/ tea stalls at the
rest spots, they fee heavenly after the wild chilly Ganga.
Bungee Jumping
Para Gliding
Camping +rafting (saw people Kayaking as well)
Mostly just sitting near the water and enjoying the sounds .. I recommend walk and explore.. we tried finding Goa Beach
ended up finding some other isolated amazing spot. Please keep in mind : The river is extremely dangerous and
everything is at a distance, it turns out to be a tiring walk but totally worth. Carry water, keep a safe distance, Do not stay
at river side after sunset if not with a travel guide or in camps.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Buses from Delhi / Private cars/ Hired Taxis/ Train upto Haridwar
Online booking from Delhi.
This time while returning i traveled in Uttarkhand state volvo bus which turned out to be efficient clean air conditioned
with extremely comfortable seats and right on time. Much saner than private buses.
One major glitch ; utc has discontinued selling bus tickets at the ISBT in rishikesh, Only Online booking, Unless you take
a chance and reach ISBT an hour before the departure time and get a ticket made right there and then depending on
availability.
The place has a lot to do but not an ideal destination for long holidays. Visiting during rains would be beautiful but rafting
is closed, so unless you enjoy sitting in hotel room and strolling aimlessly in the evening and your main idea is to get out
of your city just for the heck of it, Stick to the defined visiting seasons for your holiday here." - Disha Venkataraman,
Gurgaon, Jun 17, 2013
Spirituality and Sensuality!
"Rishikesh is one of the holiest places for the Hindus which has attracted Indians and foreigners alike including the
Beatles, Maharshi Mahesh Yogi and Kate Winslet owing to its pot pourri of spiritual mysticism, yoga and adventure.
Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, this town and the adjoining areas along the Ganges namely Muni ki reti, the
Ashrams on the East bank, Shivananda nagar and the temple sections along the Laxman Jhula comprise what is
Page 4/11
known as Rishikesh. This town is famous for its Ashrams, temples, yoga lessons and not to mention the exciting white
water rafting on the Ganges ! It is also a starting point for those who wish to undertake the Chardham yatra.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Much against the raised eyebrows of many, me and my husband, barely married six
months, decided to go to Rishikesh during Diwali. The thrill of our holiday began when we crossed the Ram Jhula at
midnight with the winds howling and the mighty Ganges flowing below. Contrary to its reputation of being a centre for
pilgrimage, Rishikesh has much to offer to people of all age groups. We indulged in white water rafting and camped in a
tent at Shivpuri. A touch of spirituality was added to our trip when we attended the evening Aarti on the banks of the holy
river with young lads and elderly singing in unison with devotion. A group of enthralled Japanese tourists joined the
chorus as well. Unlike the usual Diwali with bursting of crackers, we enjoyed it in peace at the serene environs of the
Vanaprastha Ashram. All the hotels in Rishikesh serve only vegetarian fare,a famous one being 'Chotiwala', where one
can also get to see a rotund man with a small plait (Choti!) from which the hotel derives its name. This hotel serves tasty
North Indian as well as Chinese food. Shopping is restricted to small roadside shops along the Ram Jhula which offer
stone jewellery, bangles, idols and kurtas.
Activities & things to do: The comforting part of Rishikesh is that it offers activities for both the young and the old! The
youth can indulge in white water rafting along the Ganges.Camping by the riverside is offered at Shivpuri.During rafting,
at a point where the water is fairly nonturbulent, you can also get off the raft and glide alongside the boat and enjoy the
waters.
For the more spiritual group, there are discourses on The Gita and Vedas in the numerous ashrams in Rishikesh, where
they also provide accomodation. We stayed in the beautiful and serene environs of the Vaanaprastha ashram, which
itself inspires us to look within ourselves. The evening Aarti is something not be missed. Hymns and prayers are sung in
devotion and unison thanking the heavens for this beautiful Earth and its elements. We returned from the aarti
spellbound and immersed in our own reflections about life!
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Rishikesh is 238 kms north east of Delhi and is located in the Garhwal
region of Uttaranchal. It is a pleasant 6 hour road journey from Delhi. It is best to get down at 'Muni ki Reti' and then
either cross the Ganges by walking over the Ram jhula or take the ferry which is available from morning till evening
6pm." - Meenakshi Vijay, Delhi, Dec 2, 2007
