FOR THE RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION
We welcome all Christians not fully united with us. It is a consequence of the sad divisions of Christianity that we
cannot extend to all a general invitation to receive Holy Communion. Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is
an action of the celebrating community signifying an oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Eucharist by
Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist and for which we must all pray.

AMONG THE SAINTS GRANT REPOSE...
We extend our condolences to the family of George P. Brown who fell asleep in the Lord on Tuesday,
March 24, 2015. The visitation will be held today, Sunday, March 29, 2015 at the O.R. Woodyard Funeral
Home, located at 2990 Bethel Road, Columbus, Ohio 43220 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Trisagion will
be offered at 7:30 p.m. There will be an additional visitation in the Entrance of the Theotokos into the Holy
Temple Chapel tomorrow, Monday, March 30, 2015 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The funeral will be held

The Coffee Hour this Sunday, March 29, 2015 will be a little different than usual. To celebrate the Feast of the
Annunciation, we are having Fish Fry Luncheon. Desserts and a special coffee station are being provided the
Gesouras Family in Memory of their father, Kostas Gesouras of blessed memory in the Cathedral Social Hall.
The Coffee Hour next Sunday, April 5, 2015 will not be held due to the Annual Palm Sunday Luncheon.
The Opportunity
Hebrews 9:11-14, especially verse 14
“How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself
without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
This final week of Great Lent signals the approach of Holy Week, with its focus on Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross.
What was our Lord’s purpose when He chose crucifixion, offering Himself to cleanse our “conscience from dead
works to serve the living God”?
Clearly, the Lord created an opportunity never available to the human race before: to cleanse, purify, and restore the
conscience to a right relationship with God. The Lord says, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me” (Matthew
11:29). United to Him in His Passion, we may now offer ourselves “through the eternal Spirit” (Hebrews 9:14) to be
restored as whole persons. We are freed from spiritual paralysis in this life and the life to come.
According to Saint Philotheos of Sinai, Christ “in His gentle love will say, ‘Behold, I am by your side and ready to
help you’” (Philokalia, volume 3, page 46). For our part, we must exert ourselves, taking the Cross into the depths of
our hearts. We watch, pray, repent, and practice self-control. The Holy Spirit will help us make these works lifegiving rather than futile, works that truly cleanse and restore the new life in Christ within our very being.
“The short way for beginners to acquire virtue is silence of the lips and closed eyes and ears,” says Saint Nicetas
Stethatos (Vlachos, Orthodox Psychotherapy, page 139). We are instructed to “dedicate a certain hour for the practice
of the Jesus prayer, for the meditation on the name of Jesus [and] start the practice of the Jesus Prayer gradually and
proceed according to [our] thirst and the grace [we] feel. . . .It is necessary that we have a steady hour for prayer which
should not be changed for any reason, not even for good works” (Vlachos, A Night in the Desert of the Holy
Mountain, page 135).
The Jesus Prayer helps us to close the world out of our hearts, for prayer is God’s primary means for us to “keep
watch.” Our nous, the eye of our heart, “like a commander stands independently between ideas, judging, and
separating the good thoughts from the bad ones . . . laying up spiritual goods” and casting all other thoughts into
oblivion (Orthodox Psychotherapy, page 140).
“This work of purification is performed by the Holy Spirit,” says Saint Diadochos of Photiki. “When the mighty One
enters the soul and overthrows the despoiler, then what has been taken captive can be set free” (Philokalia volume 1,
page 260). Note the source of the power!
In the process of praying and watching, we are brought to repentance. When the Apostle Paul speaks of “cleansing”
our consciences, this is accomplished when the deep place in our heart is uncovered through repentance.
The Holy Spirit shows us where we are enslaved and corrupted. As we come to see our bondage with God’s eyes, we
enter into deep mourning and confession. We may cooperate with God, cleansing and further unveiling our eyes until
we see the great things of the Lord within us. Repentance, of course, must be thoroughgoing, bringing us not only
godly sorrow (II Corinthians 7:10) and acknowledgment of sin (Psalm 50:4), but also strengthening our self-control.
As we review the steps in this process, let us ask God for help in establishing these habits. We are to fight off
discouragement, by which the enemy would defeat us. Christ has accomplished a great salvation, opening a wonderful
opportunity to us. Indeed, He sends the Holy Spirit to guide us along this living the way. While there is time, let us
press ahead!
Keep me in purity through saving fear of Thee, O Lord, that I may truly please Thee.

BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the

the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal
redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a
heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the

Stewardship of “Freedom of Religion”
What Are You Willing to Do?
We all saw the video. It was stark and horribly sad; twenty-one Coptic Orthodox Christians in bright orange
jumpsuits being led to slaughter along a lonely deserted Mediterranean beach. Islamic fundamentalist terrorists
were standing behind each one, a knife in hand, ready to take each one of these followers of Christ. What
possible thoughts could have been swirling through their minds; possibly thoughts of home and family, loved
ones or maybe thoughts of their soon to be meeting with their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Could it be that
they were just wishing that they could have one more taste of the Body and Blood of their Savior; just one more.
At the instant of their death, they became Saints in the Coptic Orthodox Church. They died because they were
Christians!
At this moment in time in our county, we Orthodox Christians are not faced with death for our belief. We still
have the opportunity to take more tastes of our Savior, and more chances to participate in praising the God who
created us by attending the Divine Liturgy as often as possible.
The question we must ask ourselves is; “what are we willing to do to assure that our children and
grandchildren will have the same freedom of worship that we have; freedom to profess their Orthodoxy, freedom
to attend Divine Liturgies and, most of all, freedom to partake of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
The biggest steps we can take right now are to make sure that we attend as many services as possible, make
sure that we receive Holy Communion often, and make sure that we give sacrificially of our first fruits to assure
our churches and faith are kept alive and vibrant.
The Bible tells us that the Life we live is but numbered days that will quickly pass.
In honor of the twenty-one new Coptic Orthodox Saints and all the others in the Middle East (especially the little
children) who have died for their faith: May their memories be eternal! Please do not take your religious
freedom for granted. Let no one, or no thing, keep you from the Cup of Life.

leaving the Doxology Service as a group may eat for free. This Fish Fry Luncheon is graciously being sponsored

AHEPA FAMILY BUCKEYE SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION APPLICATIONS:
The AHEPA Family (Order of AHEPA, Daughters of Penelope, Sons of Pericles, and the Maids of Athena)
Buckeye Scholarship Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2015 scholarship applications are ready and

options are listed. As a reminder, students or their parent(s) or guardian must be a member in good standing of

PHILOPTOCHOS HOMELESS MEAL MINISTRIES:
The Philoptochos Homeless Ministries will be serving a meal for the homeless on Thursday, April 23, 2015. We

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING:
The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2015. All members of the Annunciation
Greek Orthodox Cathedral in-good-standing are welcome to attend all parish council meetings.
ANNUAL FLOWER SALE:
The Ladies Greek Orthodox Philoptochos Society and the Greek Olympic Society are pleased to announce that
they are taking orders for their Annual Flower Sale. As you know, the proceeds from the Flower Sale help
support the Philoptochos Homeless Meal Ministry. Each basket sold will provide three meals to those in need!
Our goal for this year is to sell 300 hanging baskets. Orders will be taken after Divine Liturgy today, Sunday,
March 29, 2015 and next Sunday, April 5, 2015. The beautiful, 10” hanging baskets are only $14.00 each, and
may be picked-up Mother’s Day weekend on Saturday, May 9, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on Sunday,

ANNUNCIATION GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL GREEK LANGUAGE SCHOOL:
The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral Greek Language School holds children and adult classes on Saturdays from
10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and adult classes on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. The Saturday Morning Classes for April
are: Saturday, April 4, 2015; Saturday, April 18, 2015; and Saturday, April 25, 2015. The Wednesday Adult Greek
Language School Classes for April will be: Wednesday, April 1, 2015; Wednesday, April 15, 2015; Wednesday, April
22, 2015; and Wednesday, April 29, 2015.
BABY FOOD DRIVE:
We will be collecting Baby Food (jars of food, formula, or cereal) for the NNEMAP Pantry in the Short North
until Friday, May 1, 2015. Baby food is one of the most needed items for the pantry as it is not available to them
through the area Food Banks that they work with. We hope to collect enough to make weekly deliveries. Please
help us feed God’s children!
HOLY WEEK MYRRHBEARERS:
All girls in the second grade through the sixth grade are invited and encouraged to be Holy Week Myrrhbearers
(Μυροφόροι). They will be participating in the services for Palm Sunday, Holy Friday Evening, and the Great
and Holy Saturday Midnight Resurrection Service. Please contact Deborah Pries at [email protected] or

APPRECIATION AND RECOGNITION LUNCHEON:
A light luncheon will be served on Sunday, April 26, 2015 after Divine Liturgy in appreciation of Marge Paras’
25+ years of service as our Cathedral Secretary and to mark her retirement. We will also honor our parishioners
celebrating 80+ years of life. Moreover, we would like to create a slideshow of our honorees with a baby photo.

SAINT MATRONA MIRACLES OF GOD MINISTRY:

The next monthly gathering of the Saint Matrona Miracles of God Ministry will Saturday, April 4, 2015 after the
Saturday of Lazarus Divine Liturgy. This month, we will join with the rest of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox
Cathedral community for the making of palm crosses for the Feast of the Triumphant Entry of Christ into
Jerusalem and a Saturday of Lazarus Luncheon. We hope to see you there!
METROPOLIS OF PITTSBURGH WESTERN DISTRICT ORATORICAL FESTIVAL:
The Metropolis of Pittsburgh will hold the Western District Oratorical Festival on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at 9:00
a.m. at the Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, located at 3352 Mayfield Road, Cleveland
Heights, Ohio 44118. All of the participants in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral Oratorical Festival,
which was held on Saturday, March 14, 2015, were awarded the right to participate at the Metropolis of
Pittsburgh Western District Oratorical Festival. We pray that they have safe travels and the best of luck at the
Western District Oratorical Festival!

METROPOLIS OF PITTSBURGH SUMMER CAMP 2015
The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh began online camper registration for Summer Camp 2015 at
Camp Nazareth on Monday, March 16, 2015! JOY Sessions are for those currently in second grade through the
sixth grade. GOYA Sessions are for those currently in grades seventh through twelfth. We are hoping to coordinate
those going from the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in the following sessions:
 JOY Session #1: Sunday, June 21, 2015 through Saturday, June 27, 2015 (Week One)
 GOYA Session #3: Sunday, July 5, 2015 through Saturday, July 11, 2015 (Week Three)

LITTLE LAMBS MINISTRY
The next Little Lambs gathering will be a Teaching Divine Liturgy, and will be held on Saturday,

CHURCH SCHOOL OPEN SHELTER PROJECT
The Church School makes 175 sack lunches for the Open Shelter on the third Sunday of every month. The shelter
serves people who are unable to provide basic needs for their families. We need the support of our students, parents,
and members of our community to help meet our commitment to the shelter. Each month, the Church School seeks
donations from the community. Please contact Helen Rankin at (614) 530-4771 or Diane Chakalis at (614) 560-9922 if
you are willing to donate any of the following items. The next Sack Lunch Sunday will be Sunday, April 19, 2015.

Tour of Greece
The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral is planning a trip to Greece for Summer 2015.
We will visit Mainland Greece, the Greek Islands, and some of the famous monasteries including:
the Monasteries of Meteora, the Panagia in Tinos (also known as the Megalochari of Tinos or
the Evangelistria of Tinos), and the Monastery of Saint John the Evangelist and Theologian

to provide safe housing for
individuals experiencing addiction

We will be developing, writing,
and illustrating a series of age
appropriate books for teaching
adults how to read. They will
include material to help develop
important life skills and will
compliment the Homeless Outreach
Ministries of Saint Gregory of
Nyssa Orthodox Church in helping
families become more independent
and move out of poverty.
Our communities will be aiding
NNEEMAP in collecting much
needed baby food for Columbus
area families.
