Wichita is a flexible Freedom-variant LCS
that will be designed and outfitted with
mission systems to conduct a variety of
missions including antisurface warfare, mine
countermeasures and
submarine warfare.

two LCS class ships
with six others in various stages of construction and testing. The nation's first
LCS, USS Freedom, completed a U.S.
Navy deployment in 2013, and USS Fort
Worth (LCS 3) is currently deployed for
16 months to Southeast Asia. These two
deployments demonstrate how the ship
class is addressing the U.S. Navy's need
for an affordable, highly-networked and
modular ship unlike any other in the world.

Message
Key events represent the initiation,
continuation and implementation
of MMC’s major programs. We are
currently working toward three key
events; trials and delivery of LCS 5
Milwaukee, trials before ice of LCS
7 Detroit, and move-out and launch
of LCS 9 Little Rock. To successfully
meet these goals the scope of work
must be complete, the requirements
well defined, work prioritized, and
a solid Estimate at Complete (EAC)
established.
To ensure that we are on track to
meet dates and performance goals,
we need to continuously look for
ways to meet our schedule and
cost objectives. I encourage every
employee to do their part. Stay
focused on completing all activities
critical to these near term key
events as well as recover costs to
support a healthy EAC.
Additionally, this past month we
successfully achieved DNV recertification. I want to thank everyone
in maintaining our ISO-9001:2008
quality management system
inspection.

Sikuliaq and her team of 10 scientists,
5 engineers, 20+ technicians and crew,
and an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) Sentry sailed to the Western
Pacific Ocean to measure magnetism,
bathymetry, gravity, and seafloor
structure while investigating the
Earth’s geomagnetic field; the
Pacific Jurassic Quiet Zone.
For each of the 30-hour
dives executed, the
Sikuliaq deployed
and recovered the
AUV Sentry from her
starboard side using a large crane and a
deep-tow sled. The Sentry is capable of
exploring the Jurassic seafloor up to a
depth of 19,685 feet. She retrieved
magnetic data from the oldest Jurassic
crust in the Pacific. Sentry’s capabilities
were crucial to the Jurassic Magnetism
Mission—without it, scientists would
be unable to get a magnetometer close
enough to the seafloor to obtain highresolution readings of the
magnetic record from the
ocean crust.

home port in Seward, AK. She
has provided lodging, transport,
base of operations, and laboratory facilities for the duration of

USS Fort Worth Aids in Recovery Efforts in Java Sea
December 2014 – The USS Fort Worth
(LCS 3) left its forward deployed port in
Singapore to join the Guided Missile
Destroyer USS Sampson (DDG102) with
search and recovery efforts of AirAsia
Flight QZ8501 in the Java Sea.

Surabaya, went missing on December
28, 2014.

further analysis. Over the course of the

Re-designating Ships as
FF instead of LCS
January 2015 – At the recent Surface
Navy Association’s annual symposium,
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced that the Navy will begin referring to the 20 remaining LCS (hulls 33-52)
as a Frigate (FF), noting “If it’s like a
Frigate, why don’t we call it a Frigate?”
While some might question whether the
change in designation makes a distinction
without a difference, the clarification
could help deflect some of the criticism
leveled at the program regarding the vessel’s role in combat scenarios.
A 15 January Defense News article notes:
“In the Navy's designation system,
the first letter sometimes is the key to
the overall role of the ship, and "Lclass" ships are widely considered to
be those involved in carrying
Marines and their equipment for an
amphibious assault. LCS is the sole
exception — a ship the Navy counts
as a surface combatant, not an amphibious lift ship.”
Secretary Mabus also shared that re-naming of the program will change the hull
designation of future LCS class ships to
“FF” – an alignment of the Navy’s designation of the LCS vessels as a surface combatant rather than an amphibious lift ship.
However, Mabus also made it clear that
the LCS “will still be the same ship, the
same program of record, just with an appropriate and traditional name."

Watkins Participates in Local Science Night
February 2015 – 56 students and 67
parents of students from Blesch Intermediate School, Menominee were
excited to participate in the first ever
Family Science Night held on February
17th. The “Science Discovery” program introduced grade school students to the scientific method
through experimentation.
Students and families were divided
into smaller groups to try different
experiments. Bob Watkins, MMC’s
Director of Engineering, and Blesch’s
technology teacher Gab Williams led
one of the groups working on, appro-
priately enough, “Which Object will
Float.” Students examined objects,
predicted if they would float or sink,
then tested their hypothesis by placing
each object in buckets of water. Bob
learned that a can of regular soda
would sink, but a can of diet soda
would float.
Some groups of students attempted
to harness the power of electrons.
Others tried to submerge a piece of
paper in water while keeping it dry.
And some just peered-on with wide
eyes in wonder!
As further noted in the Defense News
article, Mabus believes one of the reasons
the ship is misunderstood is the nontraditional LCS designator. In making clear
that the LCS is a surface combatant,
Mabus thus hopes to avoid having to
spend time explaining the role of LCS in
the line of battle.

Building 22 Receives Leveling Platen
February 2015 – For a number of years
now the uneven concrete floors in
Building 22-Stage of Construction (SOC
2) have caused many problems in the
construction processes. The variance
from east to west was 6 inches, while
north to south was 4 inches. With
these variances the joining of modules,
welding sections together, etc., were a
challenge. The good news is… the
problems caused by the uneven
flooring have recently been rectified.
In October, the SOC 2 management
team set out to resolve this issue. In
their investigation they considered a
number of different options and finally
decided on what they felt was the best.
They purchased two leveling platen
units to correct the uneven floor issue.

Just a 4-degree drop in body temperature causes hypothermia — the

water than cold air.
So it was critical to get the deer out
of the water and get her dry as fast
as possible. Thanks to the efforts of
