Growing Excellence Together Piki ake te tihi ngātahi Newsletter 26 March 2015 Important Notes Things to note… ►March 27 Jnr Cross Country, PP Day 1 April. ►March 30 Centrals swimming. ►April 2, Thurs, last Day of term 1. ►April 20 First day of Term 2. ►May 6 Yr 5-8 Cross Country (Zones 19 May.) Has your child lost a collector’s album? Apply at the office. Expect an invoice week 2 of term 2. We have changed our management systems, apologies for the delay. Nau mai haere mai, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Bula Vinaka! .The support that we gave the Black-caps on Tuesday, by all wearing black, has obviously paid off! What an exciting game but we did have a few tired people at school on the Wednesday. It was a good tiredness! Go the Blackcaps and good to know our support achieved the desired outcome! Because the air temperature is getting colder the pool is rarely being used and it makes no sense to keep heating the pool so we intend to close the swimming pool at the end of this term (Thursday, 2nd April). If you have hired a key, we will give you your ten dollars refund early next term as we have to have the cash ready for you. We will let you know when you can return the key and get your refund. Please, please, please, if your child is not well, please keep them home. There is a bit of illness going around and we get concerned when we have to send children home when they weren’t feeling well before they came to school. I know work commitments are important but your child’s health is even more important. When you are not sure….it pays to err on the side of caution. Traffic grumbles: Sorry Mums and Dads but still we continue to get complaints from parents about others parking on the dotted yellow lines, both on Avonhead Road and Norton’s Road, and doing u-turns outside the school. The road code is very specific that you cannot stop on the dotted yellow lines. You are endangering others as the dotted lines are often painted on the side of the road where there are often trouble spots. Our staff also report that, in the mornings, some parents are using the staff car park to drop children off despite a sign that says “staff only cars”. It’s not OK to hold up traffic on Avonhead Road as you turn to enter our carpark (when you shouldn’t be) and our students walking to school don’t expect you coming into the carpark. On another note, we wish to advise that Shirley-Anne Collins who has been our sports co-ordinator for a number of years has indicated that she will be finishing at the end of this term. We have appreciated Shirley-Ann’s commitment, dedication and attention to detail. She has been an awesome help to teachers and I know she will be sadly missed. We wish Shirley-Anne well for her retirement and thank her on behalf of the students, staff and parents. We are in the process of updating Ultranet with our new Student Management System and as a result the old parent logins - as you have probably worked out don't work. All parents will be emailed their new passwords by tomorrow afternoon, so you can log onto your child's class page then. Apologies for the delay, but it has been a lengthy process transitioning the information across to our new Student Management System. Thanks for your support. Finally, I will be heading away to Korea on Monday and I wish you all the best for the upcoming holidays. As you know, the last day for this term, is Thursday 2nd at 3pm. Have a great family time with your children. Yr 5/6 Girls’ Cricket! Team Avonhead! Some really keen year 5 and 6 girls took up the challenge of learning a new sport - cricket this term, and played in the World Cup Cricket League Quikhit Competition. They played 3 games against St Patricks’, Fendalton and Cotswold B, as well as a friendly against Cotswold A. The improvement shown from game 1 to the final game was incredible and their determination and enthusiasm was something to be proud of. Winning their final game against Cotswold B was a well deserved way to finish. As well as having practices at school during lunchtimes, the girls also had some coaching from Jacinta Savage (a Canterbury Wizard's player). Congratulations girls on your fine effort, and thank you so much to the parents who were taxi drivers, coaches and umpires during the games! Cricket will begin again in Term 4 for Year 5-8 boys and girls. ◄Support from Team 5/6 when we versed Cotswold B Some of the squad Bowling Welcome to our 2015 Asian Community Gathering Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Sri Lankan and Indian families Nihao, Konnichi wa, Anya hosayo, Kamusta, Halo, Namesteh You are invited to our Term Two gathering.
