Dear Well Intervention and Coiled Tubing Colleagues,
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the Intervention &
Coiled Tubing Association (ICoTA) are excited to present one of our
most successful annual events, the Coiled Tubing & Well Intervention
Conference & Exhibition. It will return to The Woodlands, Texas, USA,
24–25 March 2015.
The 2015 event will include a diverse range of presentations covering
innovative solutions, results-focused best practices, and HSE
improvements across all sectors of the industry, including electric line,
slick line, hydraulic workover, and coiled tubing for both onshore and
offshore operations.
This year’s conference features a sold-out exhibition, with more than
90 exhbitors in 20,000 square feet. Plus, prior to the start of the
conference, three training courses are available: Coiled Tubing and
Its Applications, Subsea Well Interventions, and a new SPE course
covering the Fundamentals of Hydraulic Workover Operations.

Conference Training Courses

Coiled Tubing and Its Applications, 1-day Class
Monday, 23 March | 0800–1700
Instructor: Ed Smalley
This course provides an introduction to coiled tubing (CT) as a tool for workover and drilling
and completion services. It includes an overview of CT extended-reach operations, typical
field applications, the properties of CT, its manufacture, surface equipment required for
downhole deployment, as well as discussion about downhole CT tools. A significant portion
of the course covers CT mechanical performance, including working limits, buckling, and
fatigue. A discussion of CT drilling technology and hydraulics is also included.
Fundamentals and Introduction to Hydraulic
Workover Applications, ½-day Class
Monday, 23 March | 0800–1200
Instructor: Ralph McDaniel
Hydraulic workover (Snubbing) can do anything a rig can do and do it under pressure. It can
operate on land, offshore, and in remote locations. Discussion will cover HWO equipment,
job design, applications, rig ups, and production improvement methods. Highlights include a
workover decision tree related to CT, HWO, and a workover rig.
Subsea Well Interventions, ½-day Class
Monday, 23 March | 1300–1700
Instructors: Experts from Statoil, FMC, and Helix Well Ops
This course is intended as an introductory technical course providing awarenesslevel information on the main aspects of current subsea well intervention technology,
applications, and activities. The main focus is on specialized subsea well intervention
technology and operations with wireline or coiled tubing. The course is primarily intended
for personnel new to well intervention practices, subsea well operations, or both.

In 2015, E&P companies will spend over $465 billion buying products and
services from the oilfield’s equipment and service suppliers around the world.
In 1999, a low point in the modern era, these same companies spent just $75
billion globally. With the global market for all things oilfield growing by 6x
in a decade and a half, how does the well intervention sector compare? Richard Spears
will present his firm’s evaluation of the coiled tubing services, wireline logging, and well
servicing markets, along with a look at some of the technologies that enabled the rapid
growth-completion equipment, directional drilling, and artificial lift markets.

Speaker Biography: With an engineering degree from Oklahoma State University and
graduate work in industrial engineering, Richard Spears has worked for 35 years in the
upstream oil and gas industry, starting as a field engineer for Halliburton. Today, Spears
is one of the managing directors of Spears & Associates, an oilfield market research
firm. Richard has been with the firm since 1985 and leads its mergers and acquisitions
support practice.
Spears is a 30-year member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE 1141910) and
was an SPE Distinguished Lecturer 2005–2006. He is also a 29-year member of the
Association of Energy Service Companies.
Spears is on the board of directors of several oilfield service companies.

03 Well Intervention Applications I

This session is focused on applications,
including P&A, using what are considered
the heavier well intervention techniques
(e.g. HWO). It also presents applications for
remedial repair of a casing using a CT/slick
line combination and introduces a surface
technique that both improves safety and
also reduces CT intervention time required.
04 CT Materials and Integrity
Session Chairpersons:

Simon Sparke, Tullow Oil
The first part of this session will incorporate
short presentations reviewing premature
CT failures from three service providers.
Industry specialists will then join the
authors for a panel discussion on the
subject. The second part of the session will
look at new, developing CT materials to
meet the industry requirement for stronger
and more sour-resistant pipe. NDE of CT
strings has become more common and the
instrumentation continues to improve. This
session will provide an opportunity to hear
about these improvements.
