TRACKSIDE IN DUBAI
by Michele MacDonald
Emerging from dark shadows into the golden beams
cast by overhead lights, California Chrome (Lucky
Pulpit) strode on to the track at Meydan Racecourse in
Dubai more than an hour before dawn on Mar. 23
looking like a Hollywood star who owned the vast
racing theater built by Sheikh Mohammed.
AHe hears your
cameras,@ exercise
rider Willie
Delgado said,
smiling, as the
colt struck a noble
pose for the few
bystanders on
hand around
5 a.m. Jogging
forward, California
Chrome whinnied
into the darkness:
a challenge,
California Chrome
perhaps, or just
Michelle MacDonald
enthusiasm for the
moment.
AEverything is going great,@ declared assistant trainer
Alan Sherman after pointing his own camera at the
handsome chestnut who galloped about 1 3/4 miles as
he prepares for the world=s richest race, the $10 million
G1 Dubai World Cup sponsored by Emirates. AHe seems
to be enjoying it
here.@
While
California
Chrome went to
the Meydan
track in the
sunshine around
7 a.m. on his
first venture out
of quarantine on
Mar. 21,
Lea
Sherman has
Michele
MacDonald
subsequently
opted for the
pre-dawn darkness for his most recent gallops.
AI like coming earlier. It=s cooler and there are less
flies,@ Sherman said. APlus, he=ll get used to the lights.@

SKY THE LIMIT FOR CANDY RIDE
Only a couple of weeks ago, Bill Oppenheim reminded
us of 2005=s remarkable crop of new stallions, featuring
Tapit, Medaglia d=Oro, Speightstown and Candy Ride.
At a time when the top stallions commanded such fees
as $500,000 (Storm Cat) and $300,000 (A.P. Indy and
Kingmambo), it is worth remembering that two of these
newcomers were available for as little as $15,000
(Tapit) and $10,000 (Candy Ride).
The inexpensive nature of Candy Ride=s fee reflected
a couple of factors which tend to be unhelpful--to say
the least--to a young stallion=s prospects. For a start,
his debut at stud in February 2005 came roughly 18
months after Candy Ride had last been seen in action
on the track. Admittedly, that last appearance--in the
GI Pacific Classic--took some forgetting, as he had been
fairly spectacular in defeating the likes of Medaglia
d=Oro, Fleetstreet Dancer and Milwaukee Brew in a
track-record time of 1:59.11, to earn a Beyer figure of
123. His record was made all the more special by the
fact that he was still a month short of his actual fourth
birthday when he dominated the Pacific Classic.

Malabar (GB) (Raven’s Pass) is expected to head straight to
this year’s G1 Qipco 1000 Guineas without a prep race.
Trainer Mick Channon, forced to scratch the undefeated

last year’s G3 Prestige S. winner can end his British Classic
drought. “I think she's my best chance since Queen's Logic to

Candy Ride=s Grade I win at Del Mar took his record
in Argentina and the U.S. to a perfect six for six, but he
sidestepped the 2003 GI Breeders= Cup Classic and
wasn=t seen again.
Arguably a bigger handicap than his long spell on the
sidelines was his none-too-familiar Argentinian
pedigree, which featured daughters of Candy Stripes,
Farnesio and Utopico as his first three dams. Breeders
were on more familiar territory with his sire, the
well-connected Ride The Rails, who had been a smart
performer, but not smart enough to earn a stallion
career in his native land.
For the record, this son of Cryptoclearance had won
three of his eight juvenile starts, including a stakes
race, to earn 111 on the Experimental Free Handicap.
Ride The Rails continued to perform well on dirt at
three, notably finishing a good third to Dehere and
Go for Gin in the GII Fountain of Youth and second to
Holy Bull in the GI Florida Derby. Of course Candy
Ride=s broodmare sire, Candy Stripes, has also made his
presence felt via the American exploits of such as
Invasor, Leroidesanimaux, Different and Lundy=s
Liability.
Needless to say, any doubts about Candy Ride=s
qualifications have long since been dispelled. By the
end of 2008, he ranked third behind Tapit among the
freshman sires, thanks principally to the graded stakes
successes of Evita Argentina and Capt. Candyman Can.
Cont. p4
TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 3/24/15 • PAGE 4 of 9 • thoroughbreddailynews.com
By the end of 2009 his total of first-crop graded
winners had been boosted to five by Chocolate Candy,
El Brujo and Misremembered. Capt. Candyman Can and
Evita Argentina had progressed to become his first
Grade I winners and this crop=s total of Grade I winners
was to rise to four in 2010, when Misremembered took
the Santa Anita H. and El Brujo the Pat O=Brien S.
The Grade I winners have continued to emerge from
subsequent crops, to the extent that Candy Ride=s fee
has now risen to a new high of $60,000. Another hike
in his fee may follow next year if he can maintain the
excellent start he has made to 2015, which has seen
him take second place on the sires= table behind Tapit
and ahead of Medaglia d=Oro. He has three graded
winners among his six stakes winners, headed by his
champion son Shared Belief, whose victory in the GI
Santa Anita H. boosted his career figures to 10
victories from 11 starts.
Three of the supersires mentioned at the start of this
article have Kentucky-based sons who will be
represented by their first runners in 2015. Tapit relies
on Trappe Shot and Speightstown on Haynesfield,
while Candy Ride will be hoping to start a dynasty with
Misremembered from his first crop and with Twirling
Candy and Sidney=s Candy, the two Grade I-winning
sons from his second crop.
Rather like their sire before them, Candy Ride=s
second-crop sons haven=t commanded substantial fees
early in their careers.
Twirling Candy and Sidney=s Candy both started out
at $15,000, in a year when Uncle Mo was the
highest-priced newcomer at $35,000. While Sidney=s
Candy=s fee at WinStar has remained constant at
$15,000 in his first four years, Twirling Candy=s fee
was reduced to $12,500 in his second season and then
to $10,000.

In the circumstances both have done extremely well
to sire some high-priced progeny, especially at the
recent 2-year-old sales. After achieving a first-crop
yearling average of over $61,000, the Santa Anita
Derby winner Sidney=s Candy has had nine 2-year-olds
sell for an average of $143,000 and a median of
$100,000. His best price came from his colt out of
Broadway Hennessey, who made $560,000 at OBS.
Sidney=s Candy covered 116 mares in his first season,
104 in his second and 120 in his third.
Twirling Candy, for his part, has enjoyed spectacular
success with his juveniles, especially since his yearling
average stood not much higher than $43,000. His six
2-year-olds achieved an average of $374,167 and
median of $355,000. He owed his top price to his
Sambuca Classica filly, who made $630,000, with colts
selling for $500,000, $400,000, $310,000 and
$300,000.
As you might guess from the reduction in Twirling
Candy=s fee over his first three seasons, he found it
harder than Sidney=s Candy to maintain breeders= initial
interest. After an opening book of 118 mares, he
attracted only 72 in his second year and 85 in his third.
You can bet that those sensational prices at the
2-year-old sales will change that.
Twirling Candy=s profile received another boost last
week, via his younger brother Dubai Sky, who took his
career figures to 5-4-0-1 with his success in the
GIII Spiral S. at Turfway Park.
As both brothers were born in February, it is fair to
compare the early stages of their careers. This
comparison suggests that Dubai Sky probably has
further improvement in him, as Twirling Candy didn=t
become a stakes winner until July 21 in his second
season, on only his third start. Dubai Sky has therefore
been the more precocious and more active of the two.
He will do well, though, to match Twirling Candy=s best
efforts. The older brother took the GI Malibu S. in the
very fast time of 1:19.70 for seven furlongs and also
landed a trio of Grade II events over nine furlongs.
Twirling Candy raced before California=s love affair
with synthetic tracks began to wither and die. He was
asked to tackle a variety of surfaces and proved highly
versatile, winning both his starts on turf, half of his six
starts on all-weather and two of his three starts on dirt.
Younger brother Dubai Sky began his career with four
starts on turf and his Spiral S. win came on his
all-weather debut. He should prove similarly at home on
traditional dirt if Twirling Candy is any guide, so I will
be interested to see whether he is supplemented to the
Triple Crown (the deadline being 11:59 p.m. yesterday).
A mile and a quarter should prove no problem for him.
Candy Ride was versatile too, as he proved by
becoming a Group 1 winner on turf in Argentina and on
dirt in the U.S. It is hardly surprising, then, that his
progeny have proved unusually effective over a wide
range of surfaces. Shared Belief, for example, has won
on three types of synthetic and is now shining on Santa
Anita=s new dirt track. Sidney=s Candy was a graded
winner on all-weather, turf and dirt, while
Misremembered did his graded winning on all-weather
and dirt. Cont. p6

Candy Ride has a fine record with Dubai Sky=s family.
In addition to Twirling Candy and Dubai Sky, both sons
of the twice-raced House of Danzing, the Lane=s End
resident has sired the Santa Anita Derby runner-up
Chocolate Candy from House of Danzing=s second dam
Crownette. Dubai Sky=s fourth dam, In Memory, had
the distinction of being a half-sister to the great
Affirmed, sired by Affirmed=s archrival Alydar.
KHRC APPROVES LASIX-FREE RACES
by T.D. Thornton
The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission voted 8-4 on
Monday to allow tracks to write race conditions that
bar horses from receiving furosemide within 24 hours
of post time.
The TDN learned of the vote via multiple social media
postings by attendees at the meeting, but could not
reach KHRC officials for independent confirmation
because the meeting was still in progress at deadline
for this story.
The Louisville Courier-Journal reported that Athe next
step for the issue is for the proposed regulation to go
before state legislators for review.@
Furosemide is Lasix (also branded Salix), a nearly
universally prescribed legal diuretic in American racing.
It gained widespread use in the 1970s for its ability to
reduce exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in
equine athletes. In the decades since its legalization,
Lasix has been debated as a performance-enhancer.
Over the past five years, various jurisdictions have
attempted to phase out or disincentivize its use.
According to an informational packet for the meeting
posted on the KHRC website, the threshold for the
Lasix-free races was recommended to be 100
picograms/milliliter in a post-race serum sample, which
will count as Aprima facie evidence that furosemide was
administered to the horse in violation of this
administrative regulation.@ Violators will be subject to
Class C drug violation penalties.
The Courier-Journal reported that opposition from one
dissenting commissioner had to do with the
Aunconstitutional delegation of the commission's
authority to racetracks.@ Other debate centered on
concerns that the new rule does not set limits on how
many non-Lasix races a track might schedule.
Officials at Keeneland Race Course, Churchill Downs,
and Turfway Park could not be reached for comment
before deadline for this story. But a posting from
Keeneland president Bill Thomason on the association=s
website read, AKeeneland supports the proposed
regulation...that would give us the flexibility to card
some races for horses that are free of race-day
medication. We anticipate this regulation would be in
effect during the 2016 racing calendar.@

Trackside in Dubai (cont. from p1)
As the final event on the $30 million, nine-race
program on Mar. 28, the Dubai World Cup will be run at
night under Meydan=s lights, so the experience in the
pre-dawn hours will help the colt owned by Steve
Coburn and Perry Martin be ready to perform at his
best. Trainer Art Sherman was due to be on hand for a
planned half-mile breeze by California Chrome on Mar.
24.
One of California Chrome=s key challengers in the
race, Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider=s Lea (First
Samurai), also has drawn his share of attention over the
last few days at Meydan. Another robust chestnut, 6year-old Lea Ahas taken everything in stride,@ said
trainer Bill Mott=s son and assistant, Riley.
Lea galloped after dawn on Mar. 23 under another
Mott assistant, former jockey Neil Poznansky, and had
railbirds including trainers of other Dubai World Cup
program races gawking at his powerful and athletic
physique.
All horses in the TDN are bred in North America,
unless otherwise indicated
"I'd love to get my hands on that one," said Eoin
Harty, who trained 2009 Dubai World Cup winner Well
Armed (Tiznow) and who will saddle My Johnny Be
Good (Colonel John) in the $2 million G2 UAE Derby on
the World Cup program, after watching Lea cover the
ground with fluid strides.
Shortly beforehand, Harty had sent out Casner
Racing's homebred My Johnny Be Good to work a
half-mile in :47 and change under Todd Pletcher's
exercise rider, Nick Bush.
"That's the best piece of work I've seen him put in,"
Harty declared, adding that he finds the new dirt track
at Meydan to be similar to the surface at Tampa Bay
Downs, where My Johnny Be Good finished third in the
GIII Sam F. Davis Stakes.
Also on track for a morning gallop in the post-dawn
time slot set up for American-trained runners was Al
Shaqab Racing's Mshawish (Medaglia d'Oro). Winner of
his last three races for Pletcher, including the
GI Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap, Mshawish has been
"on his toes," reported assistant trainer Ginny
DePasquale.
"He was wild yesterday. He was leaping and diving,
and Nick [Bush] had a hard time holding on to him," she
said.
Mshawish, sent out in draw reins, galloped about
1 1/2 times around the 1750 meters of the Meydan
track on Mar. 23 as he prepares for the $6 million
G1 Dubai Turf, a race he finished fourth in last year
when it was called the Dubai Duty Free and he was
trained by Mikel Delzangles. Cont. p8
TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 3/24/15 • PAGE 8 of 9 • thoroughbreddailynews.com
The 5-year-old seemed to recognize the Meydan
surroundings when he arrived on March 18, DePasquale
said, after traveling well from his base at Palm Beach
Downs in Florida, and has seemed quite happy to be
back.
Another American runner who has flashed some sass
during training at Meydan is Mike Pegram, Karl Watson
and Paul Weitman=s Secret Circle (Eddington), winner of
the 2013 Breeders= Cup Sprint and runner-up in that
race last year and a top contender in the $2 million G1
Dubai Golden Shaheen. The Bob Baffert trainee hopped
a bit as he came out of the chute on Mar. 23, and
exercise rider Dana Barnes tapped him with her stick to
keep his mind on business while an accompanying
outrider escorted the duo on to the main track.
Secret Circle proceeded to work a half-mile in :47 and
change, as timed by Harty, Baffert=s former assistant,
who texted the results to his longtime boss, who will
stay home with his two Kentucky Derby favorites,
Dortmund (Big Brown) and American Pharoah
(Pioneerof the Nile), rather than making the trip to
Dubai this year.
AHe went really good,@ said Barnes, who will be
overseeing Secret Circle for the Dubai Golden Shaheen.
AHe=s doing great, eating everything in sight.@
Another eye-catcher over the past few days has been
champion Main Sequence (Aldebaran), although not
many have seen him
as trainer Graham
Motion=s assistant
Alice Clapham has
kept him to Meydan=s
secluded all-weather
training track as he
aims for the $6
million G1 Dubai
Sheema Classic.
Galloping along
Main Sequence
with his stablemate
Michelle MacDonald
and G2 Godolphin
Mile entrant
Quadrivium (Henrythenavigator), Main Sequence has
appeared eager yet content, his coat shining in the
desert sun. Clapham was smiling and laughing as she
guided Main Sequence off the training track on
Mar. 22.
Trainer Graham Motion has arrived in Dubai and was
to decide if he would send Main Sequence for a quicker
move on Mar. 24 over the training track, Clapham said.
Other horses who have stood out during morning
training over the last few days include some of Japan=s
stars, led by Dubai World Cup contender Epiphaneia
(Jpn) (Symboli Kris S.), winner of the G1 Japan Cup,
and One and Only (Jpn) (Heart=s Cry {Jpn}), winner of
the G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby).
A pair of 3-year-old Japanese stakes-winning colts
by leading American sire Tapit--Golden Barows and
Group 1-placed Tap That--also will be carrying the Land
of the Rising Sun banner in the UAE Derby and have
made a good visual impression on track.

program, they've stretched all this out for the
2-year-olds, which has made it a lot harder for them."
GODOLPHIN EXPANDS AUSSIE PRESENCE
Off of Contributer (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire})=s win in
the G1 Ranvet S. Saturday, Australia has become a
focus for Godolphin. They will look to add another
feather to their cap Saturday with Hartnell (GB)
(Authorized {Ire}) in Saturday=s G1 BMW S. at Rosehill.
AHe has really pleased us and we have been delighted
with his runs [so far],@ said Godolphin bloodstock
advisor John Ferguson. AWe are looking forward to him
[in the BMW]. It is amazing that horses like Hartnell,
whose best trip in England was a mile and six [2800m]
and two miles [3200m], can be sped up when they
come here.@
Of Contributer=s win, Ferguson said, AIt's great to see
Contributer winning Group 1s and for Godolphin to
have four homebred Golden Slipper runners, even
though they didn't figure [in the finish], is a great sign.
We have been very happy with the way things have
gone over here and the operation is performing
strongly.@
Since the beginning of the season, Godolphin has
sent three European runners to trainer John O=Shea.
AIn my opinion racing in Australia is so healthy, you
have to think very hard before moving horses,@
Ferguson explained. ANow that Godolphin is here and it
is a Godolphin team, we want it to be successful in
Australia. At the end of the day Sheikh Mohammed is
really interested in Australian racing and Australia
generally."
MALABAR AIMED TOWARD GUINEAS
Malabar (GB) (Raven=s Pass), winner of the
G3 Prestige S. at Goodwood in August, will head
straight for the G1 Qipco 1000 Guineas without a prep,
according to trainer Mick Channon. "I think she's my
best chance since Queen's Logic to win a British
Classic," the West Ilsley trainer told www.betway.com.
"She's as forward in her coat as anything we have. We
tend to be a little behind here in the spring because of
the micro-climate we're in and being on the Downs, but
May should be fine. She appears to be well forward
enough to be competitive in the Guineas and we'll head
straight there. All options are then open, and we'll step
her up in trip at some point."
SHEIKH FAHAD AL THANI SADDLES UP FOR
CHARITY
Sheikh Fahad Al Thani will ride in Limerick
Racecourse=s charity race to benefit Irish Injured
Jockeys Apr. 25. The Qatar Racing owner was
challenged to ride by his Irish racing representative
Peter Moloney and will face the likes of Johnny
Murtagh, amongst others.
AI=m very honoured to be asked to ride for such a
worthy charity as Irish Injured Jockeys,@ Sheikh Fahad
told Racing Post. AI have been on a strict diet and a
tough training regime to get fit for the race. I have also
been riding out most days for the last month and
enjoying every second. I can=t wait for the race.@
Irish Injured Jockeys chairman Ruby Walsh added,
AWe are thrilled the race has received such interest and
support, and we=re really looking forward to the charity
raceday. The maximum field we can cater for is 14
runners, so based on entries we might have to run two
divisions on the day with a potential fundraising
prospect of i28,000, which would be a great result for
our injured riders.@

+MANHATTAN MISCHIEF (g, 4, Into Mischief-Western Melody {SP}, by West by West) registered six
workouts at Gulfstream Park West during the month of
December, and resurfaced in March to post four recent
breezes at Aqueduct in preparation for this unveiling.
Sent postward at odds of 5-2 as part of a two-horse
entry, the bay broke sharply and was taken back to
track the pace through a quarter-mile in :22.40.
Ranging up from the three path turning for home, the
gelding launched a steady bid down the center of the
course and caught entrymate High I. Q. Pete (Simon
Pure) in midstretch. Manhattan Mischief powered clear
and crossed the wire 2 3/4 lengths ahead of that rival.
