April—The Angel of the Months.
The Golden Years. Going out is
good…coming home is better. You
forget names…but it’s okay because
the other people forget they even
know you. You realize you’re never
really going to be good at anything...
especially golf. You miss the days
when everything worked with just
an “on” and “off” switch. You tend
to use more four letter words…
“what”… “when?”
Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it’s not safe to wear it
anywhere. What used to be freckles are now liver spots. Everybody
whispers. You have three sizes in
your closet, two of which you will
never wear. But old is good in some
things. Old songs, old movies, and
best of all old friends!
It is health that is real wealth,
and not pieces of gold and silver.
Author Unknown
It’s not what you gather but what
you scatter that tells what kind of life
you have lived. Author Unknown

You’ve got to get up every morning with a smile on your face, and

Flowers always make people

Spring is here at last! The world
and nature are born again. Birds are
singing, the grass is greener, trees
are budding, and plants are starting
to grow. Oh, what a wonderful time
of the year. Get out and breathe the
fresh air and thank God you’re alive
to enjoy the beauty that surrounds
us. Yes, we all have so much to be
thankful for. The joy of family and
friends, the free air we breathe, the
beauty of our community, and the
gift of love. Love, the most wonderful gift to receive and share. If more
people shared more love, what a
wonderful world we could be living
in. Instead of killing one another, we
could be helping, sharing, and loving
each other. Sounds like more fun to
me. Instead of complaining about
what you don’t have, thank God for
what you do have.
May God continue to bless our
great nation and protect the men and
women of our armed forces. Live
each day to its fullest and be good
to one another.

Why Play Bocce?
Some Thoughts from
Your Bocce League
By Joan Franzese
There’s an interesting saying,
“It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.” Hopefully this bocce season
will be a very enjoyable journey.
With this in mind, I asked several
players why they join the league
year after year. What motivated them
to come out and sometimes endure
very cool winds, either springtime
low or summer hot temperatures,
often foregoing dinner? Was it for
some of us the visions of the Division Winners Dinner at season end
(which has now been eliminated)?
It seems that many of the folks
interviewed really enjoyed the social
aspect of being with friends and
neighbors. However, one member,
Teri Pennacchio, summed it up, “I
chose bocce because it’s a challenging game, you are with your friends,
you get to meet other people and you
get to be outdoors (especially after
this dreadful winter). It’s also good
exercise but most important, I just
love it!” And so it seems for Teri and
many folks, win or lose, it’s just fun.
But for those of us who enjoy competition it’s a game of skill which
fosters a competitive spirit and this
in itself is exciting.
And so whether you are a socialminded player or thrive on competition, we encourage everyone who
has not joined the league to join. The
2015 season starts April 27, so there
is still time to sign up. Registration
forms and instructions are in the
clubhouse carousel. Everyone is also
invited to a bocce clinic Friday, April
17 at 6:30 PM and Saturday, April
18 at 10:00 AM at the bocce courts.
There is also a rain date, April 24
at 10:00 AM. The clinic instructors
will review the basics of the game,
demonstrating certain techniques, as
well as highlighting many of the fine
points of the game.
The Bocce League Board of Directors is in the process of planning
an interesting and exciting season,
which will include special events for
all members, starting with a Coffee
and Cookies Treat Week, May 18 to
May 22, and an end-of-season tournament that everyone will be eligible
to enter with exciting prizes.
The journey begins Monday,
April 27 – so be there!
Renaissance Ladies
Golf Association
By Betty Gambale
Amazing April has quietly arrived, teasing us with little signs of
spring. Small green tulip leaves have
finally forced their way through the
previously frozen ground, and spring
flowers threaten to show their colorful faces once again. Is our winter
white golf course finally turning
green? What a lovely sight to see as
it beckons us to come out and play.
April finds the RLGA Board
deep into preparations for the 2015
season. Ladies who play golf, but
who do not yet belong to the RLGA,
have been invited by phone to become members of our association
and enjoy the camaraderie that we
have to offer. There is the opportunity to play with different ladies
every week and to establish new
friendships with people who enjoy
the challenging game of golf.
Thursday, April 16, the RLGA
will hold its annual complimentary
breakfast for current and prospective members at 8:00 AM in the
ballroom. Please sign up on the
sheets posted on the bulletin board
outside of the pro shop. The sign-up
sheets that went up on March 18,
will be taken down by April 9 so we
can prepare for the right number of
people. If you know somebody who
is away, and who is looking forward
to joining us, you may sign-up for
them as well.
The Renaissance Country Club
has a 2015 Tournament schedule
in which all members of the golf
association may participate. The
first tournament is scheduled for
Saturday, April 25. It is a four person better ball, low gross/low net
tournament. Check with the pro
shop for sign-up dates. An entry
fee of $15.00 per player is required.
On a lighter side: there are two
things you can learn by stopping
your back swing at the top and
checking your hands----how many
hands you have, and which one is
wearing the glove.
How lucky we are to live here!
Enjoy our beautiful golf course!

Fun and Games
By Bernadette Garguilo
On Thursday, February 26,
members of the Passaic/Morris Club
had a night of fun and games. Our
president, Guy DiVincent, started
the fun with what he calls, “Dancing with the Stars.” They are his
famous Jib Jabs, cartoon-like skits
with faces of some of our members
doing the Charleston, Hula, Mexican
Hat Dance, etc. Whether it’s you or
a friend, you’ll get such a kick out
of the maneuvers they are doing on
the screen. I don’t know if we could
have done some of those actions
even 30 years ago!
Next, we played three games of
Bingo and the winners received gift
cards to Terry’s Deli. Last, but not
least, we played Movie Trivia. Guy
shows about a two-minute scene
from famous movies and we try to
guess the name of the movie. Six
tables came up with 24 right out of
25 movie scenes. Three gift cards to
ShopRite were given to three lucky
winners. Even if you didn’t win a gift
card, having fun and playing games
with friends was worth it.

Looking out my window, snow
and ice all around, yet I’m writing
about April. Gone is President’s Day,
Valentine’s Day, even Ground Hog
Day. But most of all the presentation on the Punta Cana trip was on
March 9 at 7:00 PM. The Boston/
Senior Tour trip is also history. But
time waits for no man. Even my 12day Florida trip has been gone two
weeks already.
The Norfolk, Virginia International Tattoo Pageant is on the
agenda for April 23 to 26, with seven
meals. Quite a few people are going
on this once-a-year trip. There is still
time to get on the bus.
We have a two-day journey to
visit and tour the Amish Country
in and around Lancaster, Pennsylvania. You will actually sit down in
an Amish home for dinner. As for
entertainment, the lavish production
ILER/ of Joseph is on the agenda also. It
ACE is only two days, but you will be
busy almost all the time touring and
EmENT eating all that great Amish cooking.
The dates are May 28 and 29. Also a
pick-up from the Renaissance area.
There is another busy two-day
S GAS
SYSTEm trip that will cover Mohonk MounR
tain House, the Culinary Institute of
America, Woodbury Outlets, FDR’s
Home, and much more traveling in
ER HEATER
a bus made for your comfort. This
will be October 14 and 15.

Almost forgot “Red Hot” Cleveland, Ohio, home of the Cleveland
Indians and the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame. I heard a rumor there will
be a stop at a casino somewhere to
accommodate all you gamblers. The
dates are September 9 to 12. We will
see what Lake Erie is all about.
Hope all the forms for the
$1,000.00 scholarships are filled
out and ready to be turned in. May
the best four students win. After
all, there are four scholarships to
be given out. The forms have to be
turned in by the end of April.
Did you get to the Renaissance
Men’s Club Friday Night Bingo?
Why not? Can’t give away scholarships without getting some money
in.
Did you know we give $2,000.00
to the Wounded Warriors every year?
We pay for that donation in part from
the proceeds of our June 6 Comedy
Night. Tickets are $15.00 per person
for a night filled with laughter for a
great cause.
The next Men’s Club meeting
is April 15, the third Wednesday of
the month. All you veterans should
show up to find out if there are any
changes in health care benefits.

Expect Lots of Laughs and
Surprises at PAC Season Opener
By Carol Leonard
Spring has sprung, the snowbirds are returning to the Renaissance nest, and soon it will be time
for PAC’s (Performing Arts Club)
first show of 2015.
Ticket distribution is on April 11
and 25 for the May show.
Mixed Nuts, an original comedy,
written and directed by PAC’s own
Bill Conroy, will take the stage in the
ballroom on the weekend of May 16
and 17, with evening performances
starting at 6:45 PM both days as well
as a Sunday matinee at 1:45 PM.
The show features five separate
and unrelated skits, including a hilarious portrayal of the reading of a
will of an eccentric millionaire to an
oddball group of potential heirs, and
the Renaissance version of “Duck
Dynasty,” a mini-musical.
Mixed Nuts is Bill’s fourth comedy for PAC. With many years of
community theater experience as a
performer, writer, and director under
his belt, he brings enthusiasm and
originality to the stage. He said he
gets his ideas from life.
“I love comedy, it’s my favorite,” he said. “People love to laugh,
and I love to make that happen for
them.”
Bill decided on the multiple skit
format so he could involve as many
people as possible in the show. In
fact, there are more than 30 actors,
as well as numerous technical assistants, stage hands, and other volunteers helping to put it all together.
Many of the performers were
chosen from those who attended a
weekly acting workshop that Bill
conducted during January. The cast
includes familiar Renaissance faces,
as well as a number of very talented
newcomers. Among the veteran
performers is the very funny John
Treglia, who also serves as Bill’s
assistant director and all-around
right-hand man.
In addition to the five skits, Bill
has some surprises up his sleeve – or
in his head, I should say – to keep
the audience entertained in between
acts. “I wanted this to be the kind
of show where people don’t know
what’s coming next,” he said.
PAC members may select their
seats and pick up tickets for Mixed
Nuts at the clubhouse on Saturday,
April 11, from 9:00 to 10:00 AM for
those who chose the show as Rank
1, and 10:00 to 11:00 AM for Rank
2. Saturday, April 25, from 9:00 to
10:00 AM will be for Rank 3 and
10:00 to 11:00 AM for Rank 4.
If you are new to Renaissance
or haven’t yet joined PAC, you can
get a membership application in the
carousel located near the bulletin
boards at the clubhouse and return it
any second Wednesday of the month
from 4:00 to 5:00 PM at the back of
the ballroom, or mail it, with a check
made out to RHA, to Myra Klein, 10
Moet Court, Manchester, NJ 08759.
Your $10.00 per person annual
membership entitles you to a ticket
to each of the four PAC performances and refreshments after the show.
You may even want to get involved
someday as a performer or volunteer.
For further information about
PAC, call Bill Conroy.
Director Bill Conroy demonstrates a dance routine for Fran Truncellito and other
cast members during a rehearsal for the May PAC show.
The Magic Club of Renaissance
By Joe Schwartz
I recently read that the definition
of an “elder” is a person who is still
growing, still a learner, still with
potential and whose life continues to
have within it promise for and connection to the future; still in pursuit
of happiness, joy and pleasure. In
addition, “elder-hood” is a time to
discover new golden adventures
that we didn’t have time for when
at work.
We, the members of the Magic
Club of Renaissance, can offer you
that golden adventure. We retired
magicians are able and willing to
teach you a new hobby. If you want
to call it Magic Tricks or the Art of
Illusion it’s still one of the oldest
hobbies enjoyed by young and old.
We break down, very slowly, each
trick so that you’re able to perform
it. The idea behind our club is for
you to amaze your children, your
grandchildren and friends and show
them that you’re still learning new
things and that we’re enjoying our
lives as we enter “elder-hood.”
The Magic Club meets on the
second Thursday each month from
1:00 PM to 3:00 PM in the ballroom.
The once a year membership fee is
$10.00 to be paid at the first meeting
by check made out to RHA.
“Now is the time to have the time
of your life,” so just come in, sign
up, and we’ll show you how easy it
is to learn your new magic hobby.
All residents and guests are welcome to the John Pizzi Magic Show
held on April 18, 2015, 6:30 PM,
show time 7:00 PM. Tickets $15.00
adults, $5.00 ages 5 to 17. Call Gerri.

Staten Island Club

To my club supporters, here’s some poetry by Linda Celiano, as heartfelt
thanks!
The Staten Island’s Valentine Blast took each of us back to the past!
Varied snacks provided tasty treats, while I provided chocolate sweets.
For all the guys, some chocolate kisses. And chocolate roses for the misses.
Our Frank LaRussa, neighbor and friend, was entertaining ‘til the end!
As his Rock N’ Rhythm did their bit to make the evening quite a hit!
Singing, dancing, and laughing out loud was good time fun for the entire

For future dates I’ve one small request for which I hope I’ll have success.
I know I may be risking a riot. But, I must insist that guests be quiet.
When performers attempt to give their best, we need to give our chats a rest.
Now, I extend my appreciation to all who helped with this creation.
In the refreshments and decorating, my committees get top rating!
I couldn’t have done this all alone. So, thank you to all who set the tone.

Proper Thinking for
Good Gardening
By Holly Yocum
There are a few questions you
need answered before beginning a
garden. Will your plant survive in
hot sun or shaded sections? Will
your plant require constant moisture? Yes, Virginia, there is a correct location in your garden for the
healthy nurturing of your new plant.
Your nursery will advise you of the
best zone for the new plant while
you shop. Don’t forget to tell the
nursery agent about windy zones and
those areas affected by morning and
afternoon sun.
Next, additional questions need
answers to ensure gardening success.
Take a handful of your soil and
squeeze it tight. If it holds together
as a solid mass, the soil is clay. If the
soil ball falls apart the soil is sandy.
Drainage evaluation is next. Test
a test hole by filling it with water.
Does the water run out? Does the
hole empty rapidly? Amend the soil
to assist in keeping the hole wet. If
the water does not drain, then your
choice of plants for this location is
limited. Indeed, few plants enjoy
sitting in wetness.
Another question now arises. Do
you know if your soil is acidic (pH
below 7) or alkaline (pH above 7)?
Rutgers Cooperative Extension in
Toms River will answer your questions and provide you with your
soil’s pH. Do get your soil tested.
Your nursery agent might ask what
the pH rating is for your property or
work zone. The answer will dictate
your purchasing decisions.
Now you must consider soil
amendments. Products such as bone
meal, rock phosphate, Holly-Tone,
and Plant-tone all have specific usage, and all are well-labeled for you
to read and to use properly at specific
locations.
How large a hole should I prepare? As important as the quality of
the soil and your soil preparation are,
so is the depth of the planting. A rule
of thumb is to dig the width of the
hole at twice the diameter of the root
ball. The downward depth is four
inches deeper than the ball. For welldrained soil, the neck of your plant
should be placed slightly above the
top of the hole. For poorly-drained
soil, plant higher than the top of the
hole. You might create a mound for
the plant roots even if the mound and
the roots are on the top of the ground.
Now water the new plant. After the
water has drained away, gently pack
down the roots with extra soil, and
then make a saucer ring around the
plant for catching rain or sprinkler
flow.
Mulching is one of the final steps
in the planting process. Cover the
top of the root ball and surrounding
area of the plant hole. The amount
varies, but suggestions are two to
four inches of mulch.
When planting shrubs and woody
trees, make a mound in the center of
the hole and spread the roots as much
as possible. It is critical to scratch
and rough up any matted roots. Do
not be timid. Trim off broken roots.
Watering is the last step. Regardless of sprinkler support, in general
water two to three times per week.
Please do your best to follow this
procedural outline. If you do, you
will have success; indeed, you will
discover your green thumb.

Do You Need a Little Help?
By Kathleen Middleton
Here in Renaissance, it is our
good fortune to have a service club,
Good Neighbors, whose members
reach out to offer a helping hand to
our residents who are homebound.
The help they provide depends on
each person’s particular needs—
home visits, rides to the clubhouse,
help with online grocery shopping,
or daily “check-in” calls. Renaissance also maintains a community
van and volunteer driver to provide
transport for residents who cannot
drive.
Outside of Renaissance, but
close by, even more help is available—all at no cost. Any resident
of Ocean County who is over 60
and no longer driving is eligible for
free support services from Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey.
Located in Toms River, CVCJ is
an interfaith nonprofit organization
whose motto is “Caring for People,
by People Who Care.” They have a
bilingual staff and trained volunteers
who will:
• p r o v i d e transportation
(weekly) to and from medical appointments;
• shop for and deliver grocer-
ies once every two weeks;
• relieve family caregivers
by “sitting” for a loved one
with dementia or a chronic
illness;
• offer companionship and
non-medical support through
in-home social visits or specialized services—pet visitation (“Caregiver Canines”)
and intergenerational programs (“Music and Memory” and “CaregiverKids”);
• make referrals to other agencies, organizations, and providers of services to seniors.
To get more information, to find
out about volunteer opportunities,
or to arrange for any of the support
services offered by Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey, call its Toms
River office (732-505-2273) or visit
its website (www.caregivervolunteers.org). The sign-up and registration process takes a week or two, and
includes a personal in-home interview. The organization’s mission is
to help the elderly and homebound
so that they can live independently
and remain in their homes.
Getting Financially Organized
By Bernice Bailine
April 15, 2015 is just around the
corner and those dreaded tax forms
have to be prepared. This can be a
very stressful time, especially if you
are recently widowed.
I was not the one who kept receipts, and I was lucky my husband
had kept meticulous records. I did
not realize how daunting it would
be in gathering all the information
that would be needed.
I know that many people have
friends or relatives who are CPAs,
but I found that the less my family
and friends knew about my business, the better I felt. I found this
great website (www.wife.org/sstaxbreaks4widows.htm) that offers
some good advice. Even so, I would
strongly suggest that you get professional assistance.
This is also a great time to start
getting yourself financially organized. Know about all your accounts,
mortgage payments, property taxes,

that you keep all medical receipts
and any confirmations for contributions you may have made during
the year, be it clothing or cash. It is
also a good time to go through your

One of the problems that I
encountered after my husband’s

insurance policies and when they
were due. I needed to institute a
system whereby I would be able to
make an effective budget and keep
better track of my monthly expenses.
I came up with the following guide

your insurance policies need updating and if you can get a reduction

Dimensions of Wellness
By Regina Rosenthal
Spring is here! Like you, I
look forward to being outdoors
and enjoying warmer weather after
hibernating during the cold, snowy
winter. As spring arrives, we start to
feel alive again, and are more likely
to think about ways to promote
healthy living.
New research in epigenetics
(how external environmental factors
affect our gene expression) reveals
that lifestyle choices can reduce
the chance of repeating our family
history of poor health. The fact that
our behavior can impact our health
is good news. When committing to
a healthy lifestyle we will need: a
plan; strategies for staying on track
(i.e. walking or other exercises with
a buddy); self-care practices; ways
to reward our accomplishments.
Lifestyle choices and self-care practices will:
• help us manage stress;
• promote relaxation;
• improve circulation;
• balance body-mind chemistry, especially during stress;
• strengthen our immune systems;
• increase flexibility and
strength;
• promote heart health, creativity, and joy;
• help manage chronic health
issues;
• improve focus, concentration, memory;
• empower us to make informed health-care decisions.
When choosing self-care practices and strategies for healthy living, consider four dimensions of
wellness—physical, mental, emotional, and life force (what brings
joy and makes us feel alive). Each
dimension has its own self-care
practices (see below). We do not
need to include all four dimensions
in a healthy living plan. I will talk
about each dimension of wellness in
upcoming columns. For now, here
are some ideas:
• Self-care practices for
physical health: meditation,
exercise and movement, nutrition, sleep and rest.
• Self-care practices for
mental health: stress management, meaningful work,
hobbies.
• Self-care practices for
emotional health: relationships, social connections,
laughter, play.
• Self-care practices for increasing joy: gratitude, creativity, beauty.
Options for healthy living exist
at Renaissance—fitness center, fitness classes, golf course, walking
trail, and community newspaper to
keep us informed. What will you
include in your healthy living plan
for 2015? I welcome sharing your
thoughts and ideas in our community
newspaper.

New Jersey Trivia
Here’s a guy who, you would believe from these lyrics, had found the
right direction to follow to change his life. I guess somewhere along the
line it got harder and harder for him to change, and we all know where that
got him. Let’s not have that happen to us.
I’m gonna make a change for once in my life
It’s gonna feel real good gonna make a difference
Gonna make it right. As I turned up the collar on
my favorite winter coat
This wind is blowin’ my mind
I see the kids in the street with not enough to eat
Who am I to be blind pretending not to see their need
A summer’s disregard, a broken bottle top
And a one man’s soul
They follow each other on the wind, ya know
‘Cause they got nowhere to go
That’s why I want you to know
I’m starting with the man in the mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make a change
I’ve been a victim of a selfish kinda love
It’s time that I realize there are some with no home
Not a nickel to loan could it be really me
Pretending that they’re not alone
A willow deeply scarred
Somebody’s broken heart
And a washed out dream (washed out dream)
They follow the pattern of the wind, ya see
‘Cause they got no place to be
That’s why I’m starting with me
I’m starting with the man in the mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make a change
Make that change.

of a neighbor, Bobby Kyle, who
taught art to some of us bored
housewives, genius (?) emerged.
Encouraged by my petty success,
I took some courses at the Summit
Art Center (later known as the New
Jersey Center for Visual Arts). And
thanks to a truly great artist, Pauline
Lorenze, I metamorphosed into a
still life freak. Everything I saw was
in groupings—bowls, vases, fruits,
etc. I was on my way!
In 1997 we came to Renaissance. After setting up the new
home, I decided to take classes at
the Ocean County Guild of Artists.
Later, when a few artists decided to
band together to form Renaissance
Art Club, I joined them and vistas
began to open for me. I sold my first
watercolor at one of our art shows, I
was elected to join the Manasquan
River Group of Artists, and in one
of its art shows I sold an oil painting
for big bucks—$300.00!
“Another Grandma Moses,” my
children and grandchildren shouted.
No such luck. But I’m happy doing
what I do, and that’s plenty for me.
At the February 4 meeting, we
welcomed Dee and Shara from
ShopRite’s bakery department. The
ladies entertained us by decorating
cakes and offering advice on how
we can do it at home. It was a delicious evening as we got to sample
the finished products.
Anna Reuther, a long time Women’s Club member and 50/50 chairperson, was recognized for all her
support and work for the Women’s
Club. Anna and her husband will be
moving shortly, and we wanted to
wish her well in her new home. We
are sorry to see Anna go but know
she will be welcomed with open
arms at her new community.
At the March 4 meeting, the
Eastside Dance Company performed
Ceili dancing for everyone’s en-
joyment. The evening’s desserts
included Irish delicacies.
Our first fundraiser for 2015 will
be held on June 3. We are having
a carnival with music supplied by
“The Untouchables.” This event is
open to members who have joined
the Women’s Club in 2015 prior to
May 1. The cost is $25.00 per person. Menu and details to follow. Remember to BYOB including water
and soda. The sign-up for this event
will be held on May 6 at 6:30 PM
prior to our Cinco de Mayo meeting.
If you have not joined the Women’s Club yet, you are missing out
on some fun. We are a fundraising
club, but we also try to entertain our
members at our monthly meetings.
Hope you will join us soon.

Here is a short autobiography.
My life as a young artist was
never a spectacular one. As a child
I did some doodling and went on to
grade and high school participating in the usual art projects, never
winning any prizes or showing any
great talent. But I must have had
some artistic leanings because when
I entered college, (Hunter, New
York City), I decided to fill some
of my electives with art courses.
Even there, I failed. My first year,
I enrolled in an oil painting class
given by an up-and-coming artist,
Robert Motherwell, (who later became famous as an early abstract
expressionist of the 20th Century).
The first day of class, seeing all those
accomplished high school graduates
around me, I picked up my brushes
and paint and dropped the course.
After college there were jobs, marriage, and child rearing.

So Long, Winter!
This past winter was one for the
record books! For too many weeks,
we were held in an icy grip that
wouldn’t let go—long stretches of
bitter cold, and dreary, gray days
that kept their promises of snow and
sleet. The record-low temperatures
resulted in record-high heating bills;

and treacherous sidewalks kept us
indoors. The snow and ice were
responsible for canceled appointments, meetings, and activities. The
brutal weather became the numberone topic of conversation.
Yet, for all its relentless blast,
winter wasn’t all bad. Despite the
weather extremes, there were a few
of those rare (thus, all the more

April comes, and spring is in the

On Wednesday, January 21,

Red Bank, New Jersey, for a performance of Absurd Person Singular
at the Two River Theater. Cecelia
Malibashka made the arrangements.
Queen Mother Carol Oross, Elisabeth Schnell, Francine Agostini,

seeing the play, we had a delicious
light lunch at the Wind Mill Restaurant featuring burgers, hot dogs,
homemade chili and cheese fries.
Absurd Person Singular is a
laugh-out-loud comedy. It satirically looks at how three English
couples deal with their relationships.
The Royal Hats Divas couldn’t stop
laughing and loved it immensely.
Sunday, February 22, 2015 in
the ballroom, 200 members of the
club were treated to a great evening.
Our first order of business was Ed
Kammerer, our president, leading
us in the pledge of allegiance. We
were then treated to some excellent sandwiches with coleslaw and

delicious cupcakes were served family style to each table.
Under the great direction of

You Can Do It!
By Kathleen Middleton
[Source: word-buff.com]
[Answers on page B-30]
SUDOKU
Watch anyone solving a Sudoku
puzzle and you see a brain on
fire: eyes transfixed, pencil (or
pen for the audacious) skittering
across the squares, a number
scribbled in place, done!
Surprisingly, what looks like
work is actually fun. Not so
surprising, say cognitive scientists because your brain loves
solving puzzles. That’s how it
learns. It thrives on the bursts
of pleasure that are part of the
brain’s reward system when you
solve problems and challenges.
[Answers on page B-30]
More than 50 million people work on crossword
puzzles daily, enjoying the challenge and keeping
their minds sharp. Whether you're a novice or an
experienced wordsmith, these tips will help you
to solve crosswords faster and more efficiently.
1. Begin with a quick “once-over.”
Go through the entire puzzle and immediately fill
in any answers you know (check crossing entries
to ensure that you’re correct). Filling in even a
few blanks can help to “get the ball rolling” and
will give you a good start in solving the puzzle.
2. Try to “crack” the theme.
Most crosswords have a “theme,” often hinted
at in the title (clues sometimes starred; answers
symmetrically placed, frequently long, more than
one word). Once you crack one of the themed answers, move to the other long answers (or starred
clues) to see how the theme connects to them. For
instance, some crosswords will have book titles or
word play or famous sayings as part of the theme.
3. Don’t be afraid to guess—or erase.
Pencil in (lightly) guesses that fit. Then try to
confirm your guess by checking the crossing
entries. If intersecting letters seem to fit, you’re
on your way. If they don’t fit, erase them, or they
may stump you later.
4. Learn the repeaters.
Certain words, often obscure in everyday usage,
occur frequently in crosswords. With practice
over time, these repeaters will become familiar
to you. Once learned, they will “jump out” and
become easy fill-in’s (“Sword” = EPEE; “Yale
student” = ELI).
5. Remember that clues and answers “match.”
There are certain clue conventions, or rules, that
crosswords always adhere to: The answer to a
clue is never included in the clue itself.
A clue will always be written in the same part of
speech as the answer. Check clues that call for
answers ending in S, ED, EST or ING. Often these
endings can be penciled in (but not always!)—
checking the crossers of these answers will help
you to know if the ending applies. For instance,
if both the across and down clue is plural for two
answers which cross on the last letter, chances
are that letter is “S.” Foreign words will be
noted directly ["Friend: Fr." = AMI] or indirectly
["Friend, in Paris” or “Friend to Pierre”]. Abbreviated answers are indicated directly ["Whistlestop
(Abbr.)" = STA] or indirectly with an abbreviated
word as part of the clue ["RR stop"].
6. Don’t “rush to judgment.”
Approach clues with an open mind. Many words
share the same spelling but have completely unrelated meanings: (e.g., “Tire,” “Tear,” “Bear,”
“Spring,”). Some words use the same form for
past and present (e.g., “Put”) or singular and
plural (e.g., “Fish”). A plural clue may not have
an answer that ends in “s” (“FBI agents” =
GMEN). A clue word may be different parts of
speech (“Rear,” noun meaning BACK, or verb
meaning RAISE).
7. Think outside the box.
Puzzle creators love to challenge the solver with
deliberately misleading clues. “Potter’s field”
could be MAGIC. “Bow” may refer to a weapon,
a bending gesture, or several other meanings.
8. Look for “cute” answers to questions.
A question mark at the end of a clue indicates
wordplay, or something “cute” (e.g., “Italy’s
capital?” = LIRA. “Present time?” = YULETIDE.
9. Watch for multi-word answers.
Remember that an answer can be made up of
more than one word, without any warning in the
clue. Many puzzles contain common phrases or
well-known titles. Even short answers can contain
more than one word ("Get under way" = GO ON;
looks like GOON).
10. Don’t give up.
Stumped? A break can do wonders! Put the puzzle
away and come back to it later—hours, or even
days later. Something invariably will jump out,
and you’ll have an “Aha!" moment. Often, getting
that one answer can lead to the complete solution
of the puzzle.
11. When all else fails, cheat!
If you are well and truly at an impasse and the
solution is beyond your grasp, then, by all means,
consult a dictionary, ask someone, or check the
Internet. Solving a challenging puzzle, even
with help, will “stretch” you and make you a
bit smarter and sharper than you were before.
So, don't be afraid to look things up. Learn, and
remember. You will find that you know more and
more facts—state capitals, major rivers, seas,
world currencies, foreign words, definitions, and
more. All of that memorizing and mental exercise
is good for your brain. Practice really does make
perfect! And the satisfaction that comes from
completing a challenging puzzle is wonderfully
addictive. Start solving!
