2015 Annual Review

2015
FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT
Annual review of football development work in the city
INTRODUCTION
from the Football Development Team
2014 saw Glasgow host the biggest sporting event ever staged in Scotland.
The Commonwealth Games was a extraordinary success and showcased everything that was
good about sport in the city.
The Games inspired children and young people to get involved in sport and has created a lasting
legacy in Glasgow, and beyond.
Although a non-games sport, football continued to thrive in 2014.
Football development saw a 15% increase in coach education attendances. Our highest to date.
We also supported more clubs through the quality mark accreditation scheme and we delivered
more football within curriculum and afterschool time than ever before.
This coming year, sees the introduction of a four strand approach to football development,
mirroring the Scottish FA’s objectives for the next four years.
1. Participation : A Game for All
2. Education : Skilled Volunteer Workforce
3. Stronger Clubs : Vibrant, Sustainable Clubs
4. Attractive Game : Culture, Pathways and Facilities
Within our role as football development officers,we will look to build on 2014’s successes in
progressing these targets.

Clinics 2014
Quality Mark club uptake on Glasgow Sport’s ‘Club Clinic’ delivered by Football Development was
extremely positive in 2014.
Delivering structured training sessions with youth players,
the club clinics specifically worked on developing
individual technique, patterns of play and shape,
attacking and defending principles, set plays and game
related practices.
The clinics focussed on specific options that coaches can
implement to allow players to develop a greater
understanding and appreciation of their individual role
together, educating them on the key principles within the
game. This contributed to the coaches CPD.
310 players and 21 Coaches attended the Summer’s daily training sessions which prepared
players for competition and enhanced the coaches experiences and knowledge, shadowing
licenced coaches.
Football in the Community
In 2014, our community programme provided opportunities for

QUALITY MARK
Stronger Clubs : Vibrant, sustainable clubs
The Scottish FA Quality Mark Awards Scheme aims to support clubs that have ambitions to be
better, bigger and stronger. It is designed to support and recognise the work of clubs and teams
who have a desire to be the very best they can be within their communities.
Increasing participation in football, driving high standards and increasing the development of our
players, coaches and volunteers is a priority of Glasgow Sport, The Scottish FA and our partners
McDonalds and Sportscotland, but we can’t achieve any of this without the passion and
commitment of volunteers on the ground – the lifeblood of grassroots football.
The Glasgow Football Development Officers support and develop clubs across the city, using
Quality Mark and Area Club Forums as a tool for growing the game.
To gain one of our awards – Standard, Development, Community and Legacy – we have a related
list of criteria that each club must achieve.
The criteria as aimed at improving or supporting management, developing structures,
administration, planning and welfare.
