Joe Noonan It never fails at this time of year that some in TV, the media, and even aggressive non-Catholics will try to chip away at our Catholic belief in Jesus' Passion, Death and Resurrection. As Catholics, one of our most powerful symbols of our faith is the Crucifix, the image of Christ hung on a cross. The Crucifix is not a trivial symbol nor evidence of a morbid preoccupation with Christ's death. Rather, the Crucifix reminds us Jesus so loved each person and the entire human race that he freely chose this path to our salvation. The Cross and the Crucifix are equal in value as symbols for Catholics. Both remind us of the transformation of a sign of torture to a sign of salvation for all mankind. When we participate in the Mass, we are present at Calvary and the tomb. From the Passion to the Resurrection. Thus, the Crucifix intimately reminds us of this amazing and startling fact. If you do not have a cross or crucifix in your home, perhaps you should buy one. Display it to remind you and all in your home how much Christ loves you. Many Catholics and non-Catholics also wear or display a simple cross. In wearing a cross, they identify themselves as disciples of Jesus. It reminds them of Jesus' love by taking up a cross to die for us. When draped in a white cloth it is a symbol of the Resurrection. Many Protestants understand and respect our use of the Crucifix. Unfortunately, with the significant splintering of Christianity, some ministers preach a criticism of the Crucifix as a symbol. They direct their congregations to not wear or display a crucifix. They proclaim, "Jesus is risen" and is not still dead on the Cross. This distinction, along with numerous misrepresentations of Catholic doctrine on Baptism, the Eucharist, the Papacy, etc., is their attempt to chip away at Catholicism and to hold onto the ex-Catholics in their churches. I have worn and own both crosses and crucifixes. Catholics find them both exemplary symbols of Jesus' love. But for argument's sake, is a cross superior to a crucifix in symbolizing the Resurrection? Actually no. The Cross was a nasty symbol of a torturous death that no early Christian would have perceived as a reminder of the Resurrection. Jesus rose from a tomb. An empty tomb represents the Resurrection. He was dead when taken down from the Cross. The bloodied Cross stood empty for more than two days before the Resurrection on Easter morning. (Diary 699) Our Lord made a great promise to all those souls who would go to Confession and then receive Him in Holy Communion on the Feast of Mercy, the Sunday after Easter, which is now called Divine Mercy Sunday throughout the Catholic Church. We want to encourage everyone to take advantage of this incredible promise and the additional Plenary Indulgence on this great Feast of Mercy, "Divine Mercy Sunday." We want you to benefit fully from these promises, and we also want you to notify all of your family and friends about them, too, and urge them to return to the practice of their faith! The Image of The Divine Mercy, which Our Lord requested to be solemnly blessed and venerated on this day, will be on display in our church. Pope John Paul II said that the image portrays the Risen Jesus Christ bringing Mercy to the whole world. Our Lord said "I want the image to be solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it. I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish." (Diary 341, 48) Please take the time to visit with this Image of The Divine Mercy and venerate Jesus. The Divine Mercy chaplet will be prayed at 3:00 pm. This is not a Mass; it is a prayer service. Life Teen is open to all high school teens of our parish. Come enjoy the 5pm Mass every Sunday night followed by food (usually pizza!) in Shaw Hall. Your Parish Transformation team continues to peer through the glass of parish life to see “what works” and what areas we can improve upon. We were asked to review 3 areas: Evangelization, Catechesis, Pray and Worship – 3 of the 7 “Building Blocks” of parish life. Perhaps some of our insights and recommendations resonate with you. EVANGELIZATION What form/area of evangelization does our parish do well? Teen programs, Christ Renews His Parish, Post cards, provide resources – pamphlets and books in narthex, etc. How am I called to go beyond my comfort zone to share and pass on my faith? Having signs in our home, e.g. pictures, statues, keeping reading material on coffee table, saying grace before meals at a restaurant, praying the rosary silently when using public transportation, saying “God bless you” to clerks at the store or drive thru, witness. How are we called as a parish to go beyond our comfort zone to share and pass on our faith? Continue post card mailings listing mass times, special events, personal invitation, invite our sharing parish to mass or events, hosting masses in the home and inviting neighbors, having block captains go door to door, parent’s night, intercessory prayer – dividing map of Oak Forest and designating areas to receive daily prayer. CATECHESIS What has been the most effective in my life for learning the faith of the Church? Family and parents, Cursillo, Christ Renews His Parish, Religious Ed, School, small groups and community, faith sharing, educated homilies, visible witness for Christ, teaching our kids, altar servers, mentoring, Bible studies, “faith is caught, not taught”. How strong are our catechetical efforts in our parish? Are they helping bring all of us closer to Christ? Prayer group, retreats, missions, Men’s breakfasts/spirituality group, Teen ministry, need to re-teach parishioners the basics of Catholicism, need for improvement, speakers, teach what the mass is, School and Religious Ed, many of the parents are uninvolved, use the Teen ministry to mentor 3rd & 4th grade students. What form/area of Catechesis does our parish do well? Catholics Returning Home, Religious Ed, Christ Renews His Parish, Bible Study, lots of opportunities to learn, but if they don’t know what they’re missing it’s lost. What form/area of Catechesis could we improve on? Too many parents drop off their kids and do not go to mass, educate the parents, combine Religious Ed and School to include teaching for the students AND their parents. PRAYER AND WORSHIP If someone who hasn’t come to Mass in years came to our parish for Sunday Mass, what would they see and experience? Welcoming, smiling faces of greeters, Fr. Joe’s greeting, a lot of men in church as opposed to other churches, altar girl servers, deacons doing homilies, conversation before mass in narthex, participation in the liturgy, familial environment, socialization beforehand, reverence, music that encourages participation, quiet playing at communion meditation, young families, teenagers as Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. What form/area of Prayer & Worship could we improve on? Social issues have permeated into our church, leads to confusion, we need to hear more truth about our faith from the pulpit, more catechesis needed, Fr. Scanlan used to explain parts of the mass before reciting it without making it evident, explain components of liturgy. We meet on Wednesdays, 7:00pm in Shaw Hall. JOIN US! Bring a friend. St. Damian Parish 8 A Fish Fry Thank You! Thank you to all our servers: Pastoral Staff, Music Ministry, Men’s Club, St. Vincent de Paul, School and Parish Pastoral Council for the great job they did.
