By the time you read this, we will be part-way through March, the most important sales month for Ford of Britain, when we expect around 80,000 new vehicle registrations. I urge every employee to help us maximise sales by using your Privilege and Ambassador vouchers so that you, your families, friends and neighbours can take the best possible advantage of our best ever car range. I was at the Geneva Show in early March, where there was a fantastic array of Ford performance vehicles; it was the first motor show for the all-new Ford Focus RS and the European debut of the Ford GT supercar. The Ford Focus ST, Ford Fiesta ST, Ford Mustang and GT acted as magnets for showgoers. It was a truly breathtaking performance line-up, and reminded me of one of the reasons I joined Ford in the mid 1980s – I fell in love with the Escort XR3i and working for Ford seemed the quickest way to get to drive one. Our CV line-up is also very impressive. Our new, completely revamped CV range has been in the marketplace since mid-2014 and enjoyed tremendous success, but there are significantly more opportunities in the CV market, which will be aided by the launch of Ford of Britain’s network of Transit Centres. Transit Centres allow us to provide an even better sales and aftermarket experience for our CV customers, in a similar way the first FordStores will on passenger cars. FordStores represent the essence of the Ford brand, giving our customers a great dealer experience and, additionally, extending that experience to dedicated Mustang and Vignale sales and service facilities. We have 55 dealers signed up as FordStores with six already open – in Edgeware Road, London, Leicester, Warrington, Bootle, Sunderland and York – and there will be four more fully up and running by the end of March. By the time our FordStore network is complete, more than 90% of our potential customers will be within a one hour drive of a FordStore. Finally, and as always, thank you to everyone in the Ford and Ford Credit teams and, of course, our dealer partners for the hard work that keeps us at the top. The only awards decided by fleet managers themselves, the BusinessCar honours are prized within the industry and underline Ford’s popularity among fleets. BusinessCar editor, Paul Barker, said: “Ford’s S-MAX has been a class apart since launch, bringing people-carrying practicality without boxy people-carrying looks. Though this generation is soon to be replaced by an even classier new model, it is going out with a bang and still looks great compared to rivals.” Fiesta earned its Best Supermini honour because it is “high on quality as well as quantity”. Paul Barker added: “Driving enjoyment, efficiency, good running costs and clever technology all combine to make it a popular choice. “Our readers – the people choosing these models for their business – have picked the Fiesta as their favourite mainstream supermini, and that’s testament to the car’s all-round ability.” EcoBoost team wins award from Royal Academy of Engineering A team of engineers behind Ford’s multiaward winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder petrol engine has won an inaugural award from the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng). The Ford team won the Colin Campbell Mitchell Award from the RAEng, becoming the first people to receive the accolade, which is given in recognition of ‘an individual or team of up to six engineers either working or studying in the UK, awarded for having made the greatest contribution to the advancement of any field of engineering’. The winning team included engineers from both Dagenham and Dunton: Steve Johnson, turbocharger technical specialist (Dagenham); Dominic Evans, engine NVH technical specialist (Dagenham); Mike Rowland, calibration technical specialist (Dunton); Roland Ernst, 1.0 EcoBoost engine programme manager (Dagenham); Mark Cary, engine mapping technical specialist (Dunton); and James Saward, senior calibration engineer (Dunton). The team - apart from James, who could not attend – was presented with the award at a glittering ceremony at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) by Professor Dame Ann Dowling, the first-ever female president of the RAEng. Each member of the team received a gold medal and all said they were ‘delighted and honoured’ for the recognition of their work and also that the EcoBoost 1.0 is considered a world-class example of automotive engineering. Alongside the medals, the award also carried a cash prize, with the money won by the Ford team being held in a special account that will fund local schools’ teams 6 Ford News March 2015 Receiving their awards are, from left: Steve Johnson; Dominic Evans; Mike Rowland; Roland Ernst; and Mark Cary. competing in the annual Greenpower events at Dunton – with the aim of inspiring the next generation of automotive engineers to replicate the success of the Ford team. The Colin Campbell Mitchell Award commemorates the work of one of Scotland’s leading marine engineers, who during his career with Brown Brothers Engineering pioneered the development of the steam catapult used on aircraft carriers. Ford is the clear market leader for cars and vans Ford was the clear leader in total vehicle, car and CV sales in January as it commenced its 39th consecutive year of UK car sales leadership and is on track to complete 50 consecutive years of UK commercial vehicle (CV) sales leadership. According to the official sales figures issued by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT): n Ford led UK overall, car and CV sales in January. n Fiesta led sales in its seventh successive year as the UK best seller. n Fiesta sales exceeded the total sales of all but five rival car makers. n Ford CV sales and share were up in January. n Transit nameplate sales would place it third in total vehicle sales. Ford of Britain chairman and managing director, Mark Ovenden, said: “Ford’s strong sales start to 2015 builds on the momentum sustained through 2014 and is a direct result of the continued investment in exciting products and industry-leading technologies. “Following the complete re-vamp of our CV range last year, we will renew around 60 per cent of our passenger cars this year, including the new Focus ST, C-MAX, S-MAX, Mustang and Vignale models. The recently-announced Ford GT and Focus RS will be our future technological and performance flagships.” According to the official SMMT figures, January car sales in the UK were up 6.7 per cent at 164,856 registrations, compared with January 2014. Ford sold 21,480 cars, 4,545 registrations ahead of its nearest rival. Ford Fiesta’s January registrations of 8,674 made it the clear UK best-seller and this sales total would place it seventh in the list of top-selling car manufacturers, meaning that Fiesta on its own outsells the car ranges of all but five of Ford’s rival car makers. Ford’s broad customer appeal across its car range is demonstrated by Fiesta, B-MAX, Focus, C-MAX, Kuga and Galaxy all occupying top three places in their respective market segments. UK commercial vehicle sales in January were up 23.4 per cent at 24,646, compared with January 2014. Total sales of Ford CVs were up 27.9 per cent at 6,481, compared with January 2014. Ford light commercials sales in January were up from 604 to 1,740 registrations, compared with January 2014, and its LCV market share increased from 12.3 to 25.5 per cent. Fiesta (top) continues to lead the UK market, as it has done for the seventh year in a row. Transit Courier (above) helped deliver another strong LCV performance Ford Transit has led the UK CV sector from its launch in 1965 and the full availability of Ford’s extended CV family has helped deliver these significant Ford light commercial sales and share increases. However, to underline that Ford’s commercial vehicle models are a success across the whole range, it should be noted that Fiesta Van, Transit Courier, Transit Connect, Transit Custom, Transit and Ranger are all placed in the top three in their respective market segments. Ford News March 2015 7 Engine production milestones at Bridgend Milestones are being passed at Bridgend Engine Plant. Nearly 35 years after the first CVH engine rolled off the lines, the plant assembled its 19 millionth engine in February and is on course to top 20 million units this summer. In January, Ford’s lead petrol engine plant in Europe signed off its eight millonth Sigma engine since Job1 in May 1998. The new 1.5 EcoBoost version of the Sigma which passed the milestone is the latest in a series that powers some of the most popular cars in Europe and other parts of the world. In 35 years, the plant has built 17.2 million four—cylinder engines and over 1.72 million in-line six, V6 and V8 power units for Ford and its customers, starting with the first V8 for Jaguar in spring 1996. Plant manager Ian Pearson said: “This is a landmark of which Bridgend Engine Plant can be very proud. “Sigma is very important to Ford and its customers and over the years has been at the forefront of our model range. The latest EcoBoost provides the very latest technology with low emissions, excellent economy, refinement and performance.” Workers on the Sigma line gave the landmark engine a rousing send-off with help from Ford sporting ambassador and Paralympic athlete Aled Davies and Paralympic athlete Nathan Stephens, whose fathers Hugh and Barrie have worked at the Bridgend plant for most of the 35 and 23 years respectively. The sportsmen still compete after winning a string of gold medals in Olympic, World and Commonwealth Games in field events over the last few years. In between competitions they also mentor, coach and support upcoming young athletes. CV Show line-up Fittingly, in its 50th birthday year, the Ford Transit will take centre stage on Ford’s stand at the CV show at the NEC, Birmingham, from 14 to 16 April. A Transit van and Transit 17-seat bus, together with a Transit dropside, double-cab-in-van and one-way tipper, will be exhibited at the CV industry’s major event of the year. Also on display on the stand, which will be manned by Ford technical specialists, will be a Tourneo Custom executive limousine, a Transit Custom SportVan, Courier vans and a Ranger double cab pick-up. Alongside them will be the first wheelchair-accessible Tourneo Connect converted by Allied Vehicles of Glasgow. The show is also an opportunity for potential customers to have an initial test drive, and Ford will have a range of vehicles available – Transit All Wheel Drive, Transit Van, Transit Connect, Transit Courier and Transit Custom. 8 Ford News March 2015 With the eight millionth Sigma engine off the line at Bridgend, are, from left: Hugh Davies, Nathan Stephens, Barrie Stephens and Aled Davies NHS department adds more Fords to its fleet The NHS Blood and Transplant service (NHSBT) has added 56 Ford Transit Custom vans to its 500-vehicle fleet, which is already two thirds Ford-badged, Focus estates to specially adapted Transits, each of which has a key task in keeping blood supplies circulating. NHSBT’s national fleet service manager, Larry Bannon, said: “We are sure the Transit Custom will more than meet our expectations. The Transit is recognised as the perennial best in class, and it is certainly the best vehicle that fits our purpose, with excellent network support and a spare parts supply second to none.” He added: “The Ford vans are used in every stage of the blood donation process, from collecting, then transporting the donated blood to our regional processing sites, through to delivering units of blood to hospitals, whether as part of a routine order or under emergency blue-light cover to meet a hospital’s urgent needs.” Ford direct sales manager, Terry Adams, added: “It is reassuring to know a life-saving service that any of us might need to call upon, has placed its faith in the safety and reliability of Transit. They also have some Transit Connects and Focus models on order.” Ford News March 2015 9 Ford College bids a fond farewell to Loughborough Following almost 15 years at the heart of its training programmes, the Ford College team has closed the doors for the final time on the Henry Ford College in Loughborough. Since it opened for business in 2001, the Henry Ford College has hosted countless thousands of delegates from Ford’s UK dealer network and sales teams for a range of product, brand and sales training. Flagship programmes such as the True Blue events and Ford Heroes sales training, and a host of external and internal events, have found the perfect home within the distinctive blue walls of the facility, which was located on the edge of the Loughborough University campus. However, with both sales and technical training about to relocate to the new centre under construction in Daventry, it is time to bid farewell to the Loughborough facility. “Henry Ford College has been an outstanding base for our training, and we leave with great memories of our work there,” said Ford College principal, Alan Bates. “But we’re also excited about moving into our new home, and the new facility will create tremendous opportunities to raise our training to a new level.” As the new Daventry centre is being prepared for its opening later in 2015, Ford College will be using a number of temporary regional venues to host its regular sales training activities. Following the closure of the Loughborough facility, it has been possible for the majority of the Ford College team based there to transfer to the new centre at Daventry. “We would like to thank the entire Ford College team at Loughborough for their fantastic contribution to our training programme over many years, and look forward to working together again in the new Daventry facility,” added Alan Bates. n Ford College has been shortlisted in a national awards programme for the innovative communications campaign used to support its True Blue training in 2014. Providing a dramatic introduction to the new EcoSport and Tourneo Connect models, the training course was entitled Direct the Action! and featured a memorable film and TV theme. To maximise the interest and involvement of delegates, they were engaged throughout the training process including a colourful pre-event mailshot, interactive course content, and post-event conversations via social media. This imaginative campaign saw Ford College and its partner agency Havas People nominated in the annual RAD awards which recognise excellence in recruitment and employee communications. The initiative was shortlisted among just four others within the Employee Engagement category. From left: Alan Bates, Ford College principal, with Mark Sullivan and Paul Cowpland from Havas People Ford extends apprenticeship backing Ford will be among the first UK employers to develop and offer a new Governmentbacked degree apprentice programme to A-level school leavers seeking an alternative to the traditional university route. The new programme will provide theoretical and practical education in the digital and software field. The Company has introduced its own higher apprenticeship programmes over the last two years. They are designed to encourage a new generation of engineers and professionals into the automotive industry, offering a degree-level qualification with high-quality training in a range of engineering skills. Ford introduced its own higher apprenticeship in IT in September 2014, which provides a path towards a Batchelor of Science degree in IT Management for Business, delivered with the University of Greenwich. The new programme will be developed by Ford, along with other leading technology employers and top universities in the country. The Government will subsidise 10 Ford News March 2015 From left: Ford IT higher apprentices Cameron Holmes, Owen Mabbott, Niamh Brown, Jory Day, Jordan Bate and Benjamin Lammin some tuition costs and fees for students, while employers will provide undergraduates with an opportunity to ‘earn and learn’ through a paid apprentice role with practical training. Ford apprenticeship manager, Tessa Hougham, said: “Ford’s advanced and higher apprenticeship programmes have produced some of the UK’s best engineers and innovators. We’re proud to be among the first to support these new apprenticeships in the digital sector.” Ford has been listed among the City & Guilds top 100 apprentice employers for 2014 - the fourth successive year that Ford has made the list. Earlier in 2014, the Company was South East regional winner of the macro employer of the year category in the 2014 National Apprenticeship Awards. Patent awards handed out The bright ideas of Dunton employees were recognised in January with a patent award ceremony. Fifteen of the 29 patent award winners were present, receiving awards for 24 ideas thought up in Dunton. The ceremony was hosted by Joerg Beyer, executive director of engineering, and Tim Howard, chief engineer for transmission engineering, with Ford’s patent attorney Ivan Rogers and other engineering management in attendance. Some of the winners had retired prior to their patent being granted, thus returning to Dunton to receive their accolade, and the event provided a good chance for people who had worked together previously patenting ideas to get together again. Winners POWERTRAIN: Robert Helle-Lorentzen – five individual patents for: Vehicle Engine Cooling using a Stirling Engine; Cooling Internal Combustion Engines; Hybrid Vehicle Control Apparatus and Method; Hybrid Vehicle With a Stability Control Module and a Drivetrain that Includes a Flywheel; and Apparatus and Method for Controlling a Hybrid Vehicle. Dagenham Panther line nears completion Machining for the new 2.0-litre advanced diesel engine line at Dagenham Engine Plant (DEP) is now 90 per cent complete, with the first testing runs scheduled to have been completed in late February. The first production time trial (PTR) run on the crank line for the new engine – codenamed ‘Panther’ in plant - was pencilled in for the third week in February, while block and head lines will follow on through March and April. The launch teams from Dagenham and Dunton have been working to prove the machines’ capabilities ahead of the PTR runs, with the maintenance team focusing on the design maintainability of the machines. Lessons have been learned from previous programmes in Cologne, Craiova, Bridgend and the ‘Tiger’ Line in DEP, with reviews of access and egress, working at height, lifting and slinging all addressed as a result. Safe working systems have been used by vendors supplying equipment to Panther, and further sharing of experience and information from Cologne and Elabuga, Russia, has ensured all three plants have benefitted from the arrangement. Job 1 for the new engine is scheduled for later this year. The total invested in the project exceeds £475 million, including £8.9 from the government’s regional growth fund, and is bringing 318 new jobs to the plant. Ford News March 2015 11 Rollout of Transit Cent A nationwide network of 105 Transit Centres and 76 Transit Service locations is due to be completed within months Ford is on target to complete its new nationwide network of 105 Transit Centres and 76 Transit Service dealer locations within a few months, providing a one-stop shop for all commercial vehicle customer needs. The Transit Centres offer new high-tech showrooms with a line-up of 12 Ford commercial vehicles on display plus six demonstrators, elevated aftersales and service standards and extended opening hours. Having the largest network of dedicated commercial vehicle dealers in the country means a Transit Centre is never far away – 95% of the UK is within 45 minutes of a Transit Centre or Transit Service dealer location. “No-one else can offer the same levels of support for businesses,” said Transit Centres director Terry Rayner. Minimising the time a vehicle is off the road is key to Ford’s Transit24 commercial vehicle service promise. With specialised RAC-certified workshops, equipment, tools and training, Ford Transit Centres and Transit Service dealers will look after all service, maintenance and warranty work. Transit24 offers while-you-wait servicing to suit the customer, with responses to online booking requests within 20 minutes. Initial diagnosis on urgent repairs using genuine Ford parts is carried out within two hours of arrival, with the aim to complete most repairs on an off road vehicle the same day. Collection and delivery of vehicles is organised and alternative transport can be arranged. While vehicle sales departments will typically open from 9am-6pm Monday to Friday and 9am-12pm on Saturdays, all sites will open for servicing and repairs at least from 7.30am6.30pm Monday to Friday, 8am-1pm on Saturdays and late night for routine servicing at least on Thursday, when a vehicle can be dropped off before 4pm and collected by 10am the next day. All the work is carried out by Ford-trained technicians, supported by online technical information and a Ford technical hotline. “Our mission is to keep our business customers moving,” said Ford commercial vehicle aftersales manager, Paul McDermott. GATES GROUP CHAIRMAN HEATH GREENALL “The Gates Group have always viewed Ford commercial vehicles as a core part of our sales and service business plan and have been very successful as a result. However, with the introduction of the Transit Centre brand and the new focus that is being applied to it, I can already see opportunities developing and an increase in customer interest. “The new standards have been fully embraced by my team and have enabled us to take a new look at the proposition. One key change that we have made at Stevenage is to provide a dedicated showroom with a larger display area to enable our business customers to fully appreciate the product range available. “The early feedback from both staff and customers is very positive, which I am sure will translate into positive results for the coming year.” Pictured right: Ford Transit Centres director Terry Rayner, left, with Gates Group chairman Heath Greenall at the dealership’s new Transit Centre in Stevenage 12 Ford News March 2015 tre network on course FORD TRANSIT CENTRES DIRECTOR TERRY RAYNER “The successful implementation of the new Transit Centre customer-facing standards programme has taken our commercial vehicle proposition to a new level. With a focus on quality sales and aftersales processes, coupled with a new selling environment, we are perfectly poised to deliver a more consistent proposition to our customers and take advantage of the growing industry. However, you can’t grow your business without a good product and that’s where we excel. From Fiesta Van through to the new two-tonne Transit, we have class-leading products, with equipment and technology levels that you would previously only expect in a passenger car. In particular, the width of product range enables our Transit Centre dealer staff to provide customers with a better match to their business requirements and ensure that they have vehicles that are fit for purpose. One of our newest additions to the product line-up is the award-winning Transit Courier. Not only does it look great on the road but it gives our dealers the opportunity to talk to a whole new category of local high street business customers who need a small, practical, stylish van. Some of these customers will be experiencing a Ford dealership for the first time, making Transit Centre a very important introductory point. 2015 is set to be an exciting year for Ford commercial vehicles. Great products supported by a new Transit Centre proposition in a buoyant industry. We intend to grasp this opportunity and make Transit’s 50th a year to remember.” Ford News March 2015 13 Left: Graham Hoare, director of global vehicle evaluation and verification, cuts the ribbon to re-open the track, with Pete Reyes, commercial vehicle line director, left, and Brian Wolfe, director of powertrain engineering Below: Some of the vehicles from Ford’s heritage vehicle collection which were on hand to help celebrate the track re-opening Dunton track re-opens Dunton’s high speed test track has been officially re-opened after a major surface upgrade, the first one in the track's 48-year history. The project involved removing almost 3,000 tonnes of material from the straights and lay-bys of the track. The upgrade also included the laying of a geo-textile matting to help stabilise the new surface. The works also included laying an additional 700 tonnes of material to repair damage found on the sub-surface after works had commenced. The final surface layer specification was chosen with the input of the powertrain NVH teams to suit their development require- ments and is now comparable to that of Lommel proving ground. This addition will aid the testing of Ford vehicles and powertrains in Europe by providing a quiet running surface. With the addition of extra road lining, markings and signage for added safety the project is now complete. There was an opportunity for people attending the re-opening ceremony to experience the new surface in a Ford Focus RS500, a 37-year-old Ford Granada and a Ford Transit Custom powered by a prototype ‘Panther’ diesel engine, currently being developed in Dunton and Dagenham. Ford global safety chief tours Dagenham estate The global safety manager of Ford Motor Company paid a visit to Dagenham in February, as part of his tour of Company facilities across Europe. Rick Puckett spent two days on the Dagenham estate, visiting Dagenham Engine Plant (DEP) and Transport Operations (TOps), among other sites. He was accompanied on the trip by Uwe Gawel, Ford of Europe’s safety manager, and Trevor Marshall, Ford of Britain’s safety manager. During his trip to the engine plant, he visited assembly and machining areas, and the new installations for the forthcoming ‘Panther’ line. He spent the majority of his time on the shop floor, talking to people and looking at how safety was implemented in plant. During his tour of TOps, European manager Graham Edwards and TOps’ UK manager Paul Arrowsmith showed him around the multiple locations at Dagenham, including the jetty and fleet areas. Rick said he was “very impressed” with both what he saw and the people he spoke to during his visit, including the way DEP has managed to iron out any issues arising from the installation of Panther with regards to other production lines in the plant. Rick has also visited Bridgend, Dunton, Valencia, Saarlouis and Cologne during his European tour. He has received the Salute to Dealers honour along with three dealers from the US, one from Mexico and one from the Philippines – six out of 8,500 dealers globally. “I am extremely humbled, and privileged to be honoured,” said Nas, whose Middlesborough-based dealer group employs 470 people in the north east of England. He began his career there 32 years ago as a sales executive. In making the awards, Ford Motor Company said: “The Salute to Dealers awards recognise dealers who go above and beyond when it comes to giving back to the communities in which they live and work. “They are being recognised for exhibiting unparalleled giving, dedication and leadership in their communities.” Nas Khan said: “Jennings has always been involved in local charities and communities; it has always been part of the company’s culture, and I have continued that in my role as managing director.” His involvement stepped up several gears in 2006; his father, himself involved with charities for many years, visited an area of northern Pakistan hit by an earthquake and was so horrified he phoned his son and said he should see for himself. Nas arrived in Kashmir a few days after the earthquake and was shocked by the devastation and of seeing children – particularly one little girl aged about seven – wandering the streets, probably orphaned. “It affected me so much, I set up my charity, the Emaan Foundation, and built an orphanage,” said Nas, who was born in Lahore, in the Punjab, and moved to England when he was 14. The foundation helps to pay the running costs of the orphanage and has raised money from events and fund-raisers supported by Jennings to help the people of Kashmir. The fund-raising became even more important in 2010 when monsoon rains caused the Indus river to burst its banks and decimate an area south of the Punjab, killing many thousands of people and destroying an estimated one million homes. Nas immediately started organising fund-raising events to buy life-saving water purifiers called Life Straws, for flood victims. His foundation bought 3,000 of them and his personal assistant Bev Stephenson and his daughter wrote to charities and other organisations working in the region – who had not heard of Life Straws – to get one of A proud Nas Khan with the portrait presented by Ford featuring a montage of philanthropic and volunteer activities, apart from his work in Pakistan, that led to his award. A duplicate has joined a Salute to Dealers display in the lobby of Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan them to distribute the purifiers on the Emaan Foundation’s behalf. At the time, Nas told his local paper: “It is heart-breaking to think that young children are dying for the want of a £3 Life Straw, and I just want to do what I can.” Not content to leave it at that, Nas then set out to raise £120,000 to build a village of 60 houses, with a school, a deep well to provide clean drinking water and with two animals for every family, to help them support themselves. With that accomplished, and with an appeal to help victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines also successfully behind him, Nas is on to his next project. “I am going to build the village a hospital,” he said. And to help him, he has received something of which he is very proud: “I have received an email from Bill Ford, saying he is sending a cheque for $10,000 to go to my selected charity.” n You can find out more about the Emaan Foundation at www.emaanfoundation.org Nas Khan with some of the villagers who are being helped by his Emaan Foundation Ford News March 2015 15 Friction test rig opens at Dunton A new friction rig facility has been opened at Dunton, following a £1.5 million investment designed to take the testing of Ford products to the next level and to make Ford vehicles even more fuel-efficient. Key members of the functional team gave a guided tour of the facility, which previously housed a brake dynamometer, explaining various aspects of the engine and valvetrain testing process while discussing how the results from such equipment will benefit product development going forward. Ford of Europe director of powertrain engineering, Brian Wolfe, said: “I am very pleased to see the installation of this world class facility. As we continue to move forward to more stringent CO2 requirements, every 0.01% becomes more and more crucial to the environment, customer and company. Ensuring our teams have the correct tools and procedures to minimise frictional losses are a mandatory foundation for this strive to deliver best fuel economy possible for our customers.” Following the tour, Ford’s global director of vehicle evaluation and verification, Graham Hoare, said: “Ford’s multi-million pound investment in this new capability will enable the precise measurement and characterisation of engine friction to be completed here onsite. “With fuel economy / CO2 optimisation a key driver in the continued delivery of our world-class engines, this facility will provide insight into areas of friction improvement that ultimately will yield vital fuel efficiency for our cars and commercial vehicles.” Top: Liam Carter, second left, shows senior colleagues Brian Wolfe, Graham Hoare and Roland Ernst the new facility Bottom: Visitors were given a guided tour of the new facility by key members of the functional team, who explained aspects of the engine and valvetrain testing process Energy-saving drive launched at Bridgend There is a new drive underway in Bridgend to improve the environment and save energy. The plant has set up a working group to look at all aspects of operations on a regular basis and to make continuous improvements. The new programme will see all operators become the eyes of the plant with responsibilities in their sections to cut down on waste, eradicate spillages and suggest possible energy saving measures as well as conserve what is used in each operation. More than a dozen champions from all over the plant will meet on a monthly basis to take on board the shop-floor suggestions and feedback and to look at implementation of ideas and programmes. The existing plant-wide suggestion scheme will feed into this monthly review but it will go further than before. Engineers Brett James and Billie Mears will respectively head up the environmental and energy sections and they can call in outside specialists as required to assist or advise on particular requirements. The working party will make regular tours of the plant with a view to making savings where they can see opportunities to improve and respond to suggestions from the shop floor. Brett James said: “It will be good to have a team of people looking at environmental and energy matters and working with the operators because it is such a huge plant.” 16 Ford News March 2015 Members of the Bridgend working group set up to help improve the environment and save energy will make regular tours of the plant Hair-brained fund-raising A joking remark from a colleague about hairstyles has ended up providing a local air ambulance charity with a valuable boost to its funds. Daventry-based Jess Owens bravely volunteered to have his hair styled into cornrows, and to take his new look to the office and into business meetings for a week. The result has been donations currently exceeding £750 to the air ambulance services in the Daventry area. “I’m growing my hair long at the moment, which led a colleague to speculate what my hair would look like styled into cornrow braids,” explained Jess, who manages Ford’s brand protection and strategy function. “After some discussion, I agreed to take on the challenge for a week – but only if a deserving charity could benefit as a result. “Close friends and colleagues have both needed to call out the air ambulance to rescue loved ones, so that was an obvious choice for me,” added Jess. The necessary specialist hairdressing skills were provided by a work contact – Wunmi Solaja, who works in the legal team for Ford’s trademark enforcement lawyers, Jess Owen with legal specialist Wunmi Solaja (left) who styled his hair, and Ford colleague Sarah Midson whose husband was saved by the air ambulance. Right: Jess with his cornrows and who had previous experience of the Nigerian techniques for braiding hair. The finished haircut was so striking that many individuals spontaneously made very generous donations when they saw it. All contributions made are being given to the local air ambulance, which delivers services through two regional operations in Warwickshire and Northamptonshire, and in Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland, and is wholly funded by charitable donations. “This whole thing started as a joke, but it’s great to see such a worthy cause come out as a winner,” said Jess. Ho-Ho-Hospice initiative raises £3,920 The fourth cash in-lieu of Christmas card initiative ‘Ho-Ho-Hospice’ run throughout Dunton raised £3,920 (£4,659 including Gift Aid), which was split between St Luke’s Hospice in Basildon and Little Havens Hospice. The initiative encourages employees not to send Christmas cards, but instead sign a departmental card and then to make a donation to charity. Dave Gwilliams, who co-ordinates the initiative centrally for Dunton, said: “2014 is the most successful collection we have had since we started back in 2011, and this has taken the total we have collected to date to an amazing £13,032 (£15,930 including Gift Aid). “Both hospices have running costs in excess of £2.5 million per year, of which very little is funded, so they rely heavily on the support that we offer, not just at Christmas, but also throughout the year with our community involvement days and this is a great way to kick-start their new year.” If anyone wants to join the team to coordinate a departmental card, contact Dave Gwilliams on 8738 2999 or [email protected] Some of the card co-ordinators presenting the hospice cheques, from left: Fiona Stringer, Dave Gwilliams, Keith Adams, Kerry Chambers (St Luke’s), Jim Friday, Nicola Gregory, Stephanie Spencer, Selma Begic, Arvinder Marway, Amanda Stammers. n Dagenham Engine Plant engineer Marc Pinnegar has raised £250 for Little Havens Hospice in Thundersley, by organising a bake sale. Marc normally visits Little Havens as part of his community project days but having been unable to do so recently, held a bake sale in the plant instead. Marc Pinnegar is pictured (third from right) with colleagues at the bake sale which raised £250 for Little Havens Hospice. Ford News March 2015 17 Dagenham to hold Easter egg collection Dagenham engine plant will be holding another eggs-ellent campaign this Easter by collecting chocolate eggs to take to First Steps, a local children’s charity which collects donations for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Previous years have seen kind-hearted employees donate hundreds of Easter eggs for the children in hospital, and this year the team behind the collection is hoping to set a new personal best in terms of eggs collected. Eggs can be dropped off in the plant welfare office. Daventry fund-raiser The Daventry charity team is holding its annual fund-raising evening on Friday, 20 March, at the Daventry Working Men’s Club. Heading the bill is singer Neal Astbury, with other cabaret acts and charity raffles. Funds are being raised for Comic Relief and for charity work in Borneo. Tickets are available from the charity committee. Children in Need money The Daventry team raised more than £570 for Children in Need through a range of fund-raising activities across the Northamptonshire site. The supply chain team got baking and raised more than £70 with a cake sale, while over £500 was collected from employee donations to a prize hamper raffle. Dagenham’s cash for GOSH Great Ormond Street Hospital, Dagenham’s current chosen charity, has received more than £2,400 in donations thanks to the generosity of employees on the estate. The money was raised through donating the last hour’s pay of 2014. 18 Ford News March 2015 Dawn Edwards and Vimisha Parmar at the stall with Rotarians Tony Watson and Roger Watkins Warley Rotary sale raises charity cash Brentwood Breakfast Rotary Club held its annual cake and crocus sale at Warley in support of its community work. Organised by Ford Financial’s Jenny Wells, the annual sales have raised enough money to vaccinate many thousands of children against polio as part of Rotary’s global End Polio Now campaign. The club planted more than 5,000 purple crocus bulbs in 2010 around Brentwood, including 1,000 at Warley, to act as a permanent reminder of the commitment of Rotary clubs around the world to help eradicate polio – a global initiative since 1979. Ford at Warley has supported End Polio Now since 2010. Home-Start seeks volunteers The Home-Start charity is looking for Ford people or retirees interested in helping it support families in south Essex. Home-Start Brentwood needs a volunteer minibus driver on Monday mornings during term time to transport families from the Brentwood area to and from family meetings at Shenfield. The current driver is former Ford of Britain public affairs manager Harry Calton, who is retiring from the role in May. “It is Monday mornings during school term time only, a maximum of five hours per week,” said Harry. Anyone interested should call Debbie, Vicky or Kim at Home-Start on 01277 263325. Home-Start Basildon District, which covers Basildon, Billericay and Wickford, also needs volunteers to join its management committee as trustees. The charity offers help and support to families with young children where there are problems which may include post-natal depression, loneliness, illness, disability or mental health issues. “We are now actively recruiting new trustees as two of our five current trustees are looking to retire,” said scheme manager Lorraine Ferguson. “We would like to recruit at least three trustees with the following management skills: business, personnel, advertising and promotion, fundraising, marketing and financial.” Call Lorraine on 01268 550300 or email [email protected] Bridgend tractor is back in action A piece of Bridgend’s early history has been brought back to life. The Ford 333 tractor used for maintenance was destined for scrapping but in keeping with the policy of minimising waste and costs, engineers set about restoring the 36-year-old model. Originally built in Basildon, the Ford 333 was used around grounds and roadways but mostly for emptying line-side fluid tanks in production areas. Now it will have a second life assisting with plant upkeep and services after a two-year strip-down and restoration led by John Jenkins and Clive Williams of the plant services team, together with tinsmiths and electrical engineers Ian Jones, James Jenkins and Steve Jones. They manufactured some replacement parts in plant and had to modify other pieces from alternative components as originals are no longer readily available. John remembers the tractor when it was new as both have been at the plant for over 35 years. He said: “When I saw it I knew it was not too far gone and could be restored because I have worked on a number of cars and put them back on the road.” John Jenkins and Clive Williams with the tractor. Inset: during restoration Ice bucket challenge raises £370 The Dunton-based powertrain controls management team, including chief engineer Simon Goodliff, took it in good heart when members of their team eagerly bought tickets to win the chance of giving them a soaking in an ice bucket challenge. It raised £370 for Kengred, a charity managed by Dunton’s Adrien Jacob, which supports a charity in Madagascar which helps underprivileged children. Adrien also organised a cake sale in the restaurant, which raised another £200 for the charity. Pictured right: Paul Morgan, Laine Martin, Owen Bailey, Simon Goodliff and Andy Curtis get a soaking from Kevin Chapman, Huw Thomas, Roger Walker, Andy Tuck, Gonzague Laruth, John Yarnold, Ross Edmonds and Eric Buisson TV roles for Dunton trio After five years hosting the regional First Lego League event at Dunton, Darren Bull and Colin Foley along with colleague Nicola Gregory joined the TV presenting team for the 2015 UK and Ireland final held at Loughborough University. “It was a very intense but fulfilling and rewarding day,” said Colin after eight hours of filming, interviewing and working with more than 30 teams of youngsters aged nine to 16. Darren commented: “This was a fantastic experience and opportunity for the students, who could be future engineers for Ford.” Pictured left: Colin Foley, BBC TV presenter Fran Scott, Nicola Gregory and Darren Bull at the event Ford News March 2015 19 Marathon runners get set A group leader from Dagenham Diesel Centre (DDC) will be running his first full marathon in London this year – and is hoping to raise £1,000 for Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and Saint Francis Hospice in the process. Peter Wyatt will take part in the gruelling 26.2-mile event on Sunday, 26 April. But it promises to be tough training for and then completing the London Marathon, given his last running experiences were two half-marathons 30 years ago. Peter explained: “This is my first full marathon and I am now 48. I have always been interested in running the London Marathon and have been applying for the ballot to enter it for about ten years; I couldn’t believe it this year when I finally won a place.” While not a regular runner, Peter has taken part in the London to Brighton bike ride for the past five years, the London to Southend bike ride in 2014 and regularly played football until Christmas, when he stopped to avoid any injuries while he trains for the marathon, which he hopes to complete in under five hours. He will be raising money for both CRUK and St Francis as ten years ago, his wife Mel lost her mum to cancer. “They are both causes very close to our hearts,” he said. “My motherin-law was cared for by the hospice only for a short while but they made that awful time so much easier. Everyone was amazing there and the thought that whatever money I manage to raise could make a difference and help others in the same position gives me lots of encouragement.” n Peter would like to raise at least £1,000, so if you want to help him out with his fundraising, please visit his dedicated donations webpage at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ peterwyatt66. A Dunton employee is hoping to raise money for a charity researching a rare form of lung cancer – after her step-father and Ford colleague succumbed to the disease. Peter Mansfield, who worked in the Dunton machine shop, was diagnosed with mesothelioma in May last year. He passed away just four months later. Now, his step-daughter Hayley Oliver will run the Colchester half-marathon on 29 March with the aim of raising at least £600 for the Mesothelioma UK Charitable Trust (MUKCT). CAD (computer-aided design) engineer Hayley, who ran two half-marathons last year, said: “I am really hoping to do a personal best in the race on the 29th, I have run 2hrs 21m so far but I’d like to go sub-2hrs 15m. I find half-marathons a bit difficult, I tend to train for eight to ten miles, so those extra three miles are going to make all the difference! “My step-father was diagnosed with mesothelioma in May 2014 and he sadly passed away in September, so I am also running this as a fundraiser for MUKCT. I like to run a fund-raising half-marathon every other year; in 2012, for instance, my father-in-law died from prostate cancer, so I ran a race for him subsequently. “In this instance, I want to raise awareness of mesothelioma – an asbestos-related lung cancer – as it’s not as well-known as other forms of the disease, like breast or bowel cancer. Anything I can do to raise money for this cause would be fantastic. “I’ve had great support from colleagues and I always get a great response to fundraisers; people are just so generous. I am hoping to raise £600 in total but anything more than that would be wonderful.” n If you want to donate to Hayley’s cause, you can go to her Just Giving page at www. justgiving.com/Hayleys-Half, email her at holiver3@ford. com or call her on 01268 407016 (internal dial 8738 7016). The Racing Puma was developed from the Puma RS 1999 Geneva Motor Show concept by the Ford rally team at Boreham. Originally, 1,000 cars were destined to be built, half for the UK and half for Germany, but in the end only the 500 UK cars were ever converted for sale, by Tickford in Daventry. The Racing Puma was based on the biggest engine you could get in a Ford Puma, the 1.7-litre four-cylinder VCT, and it developed 30bhp more at 153bhp. The Racing Puma could do the 0-62mph sprint in 7.9 seconds and go on to 126mph. “The real aim of the day is to get as many of the 500 cars built to Dunton on the day, so I’m interested in hearing from anyone who can assist on that score,” Matt added. “If you’re interested in the car, or even the Ford racing or rally programmes, or Boreham, we’d be delighted if you came along.” n If you are interested in the Ford Racing Puma’s 15th anniversary gathering, contact Matt on [email protected]. Wooden Spoon challenge It’s giveaway time, and we have five DVDs and two books for lucky Ford News readers. More than 300 images and first-hand accounts from some of those who drove the GT40 into the record books, including 1969 Le Mans winner Jackie Oliver, make this Haynes Publishing book by Gordon Bruce, a desirable addition to any enthusiast’s bookshelf. Barking and Dagenham from Old Photographs by Sylvia Kent, published by Amberley Publishing, includes a chapter on Ford Motor Company, with pictures of milestones in the Dagenham estate’s history, from the moment Edsel Ford cut the first turf on the site in 1929, through the first vehicle off the line in 1931 and on to more recent times. The book’s 12 chapters and 182 photographs, including a number from Ford’s archives, look at the days when Dagenham was part of Essex and at its amalgamation with Barking in 1965 to become a London borough. Ford D Series Trucks shows how Ford developed and built the D Series, which rolled off the production line for the first time in 1965 and went on to launch a quiet revolution in haulage design. The DVD comprises four films from Ford’s archives: ‘Project D’ charts the full story of the truck’s development; ‘Trucks in Europe’ is a short film made for the American market which demonstrates the huge range of Ford CVs available in Europe at the time; ‘Dateline Russia’ is the story of three D Series trucks on a gruelling 10,000-mile round trip from London to the Black Sea; ‘Desert Drive’ sees one of the trucks from the Soviet Union trip put back to work on a 10,000-mile trip to the Sahara.
