This Week
The No. 9 Omaha Mavericks begin play in the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship when
they face No. 8/10 Harvard on Saturday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. ET in the second semifinal of the Midwest
Regional at the Compton Family Ice Arena at Notre Dame.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 18-12-6 overall this season, and they finished 12-8-4-3 in the NCHC. Their third-place
finish matches the best in school history. The Mavericks were 11-7-2 at home this season and 7-5-4 on the
road. They did not play any neutral site games this year.
Harvard is 21-12-3 overall and finished 11-8-3 in ECAC Hockey, good for sixth place. The Crimson went
on to win the ECAC Playoff championship with a 4-2 win over Colgate on March 21. Harvard was 8-4-2 at
home, 11-5-1 on the road and 2-3-0 in neutral site games this season.
The Mavericks in the NCAA Tournament
This is the third time Mavericks have earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament, their second time under
Coach Dean Blais. Their last appearance came in 2011 when they were a three seed and lost to Michigan,
3-2 in overtime at St. Louis, Mo. The first appearance was 2006 under former head coach Mike Kemp when,
as a four seed, they lost to Boston University, 9-2, at Worcester, Mass.
Last Time Out
The Mavericks haven’t played since their NCHC playoff quarterfinal series against St. Cloud State on
March 13-14. The Huskies won 2-0 in the best-of-three series to eliminate the Mavericks. In the series
opener, SCSU opened the scoring with a goal from David Morley at 14:02 of the first, but the Mavericks
responded when Austin Ortega tallied a shorthanded goal at 9:43 of the second. The teams then played
into the second overtime before Morley ended the game at 89:49. Kirk Thompson stopped 30 shots for
Omaha in relief of starter Ryan Massa who was lifted in the first period.
In the second game, the Huskies got out to a 2-0 lead with goals in the first and second period. Grant
Gallo drew the Mavericks to within one on a powerplay goal at 16:44 of the third, but SCSU’s Joey Benik
restored the two-goal lead just 53 seconds later and the Huskies held on for the win. Thompson made 25
saves.
The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his sixth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to two 20-win campaigns
in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a record of 371-213-57 (.623) in his career as a
head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 109-98-24 (.524). He coached in his 200th game at
UNO on Oct. 31 at Cornell.
Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a
four-time winner of the WCHA’s Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota
where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by coaches Troy Jutting
and Alex Todd who both have extensive head coaching experience, Jutting at Minnesota State and Todd at
Castleton (Vt.) State.
Ted Donato is in his 11th season as head coach of the Crimson. The 1991 Harvard graduate is 157-168-42
all-time at his alma mater. He is assisted by associate head coach Paul Pearl and assistant Rob Rassey.
Media
All post-season games can be heard live on 1180 The Zone 2. Dave Ahlers will have the play-by-play, and
Lester St. James will handle the color commentary. Coverage begins 30 minutes before game time with
the First National Bank Pre-Game Show. Live audio and stats are available at OMavs.com. The game can be
seen live on ESPN3. Ben Holden will call the action, and Blake Geoffrion will provide analysis.
Up Next For the Mavericks
If the Mavericks win the semifinal against Harvard, they will advance to the regional final game on
Sunday, March 29 against the winner of the other regional semifinal between Minnesota State and RIT.

Dean Blais has guided the Mavericks through a remarkable
half decade and has the program poised for more milestones
following a recent contract extension through 2017-18.
Since coming to Omaha, Blais has led the Mavericks to two
20-win seasons and in the process earned his 300th career
win, yet another milestone in his outstanding career.
The Mavericks hit yet another milestone during Blais’
tenure when they made their debut in the National Collegiate
Hockey Conference in 2013-14. Picked to finish last in the
first-year circuit, the Mavericks finished in third place with a
record of 13-9-2-1.
It was clear the Mavericks would be better than their
preseason ranking by November when they took on four
ranked teams in consecutive weekends, beating the likes of
Denver, North Dakota, Michigan and Miami to forge a 6-2-0
record.
For the second straight year, Blais coached an AllAmerican as junior Josh Archibald was named a First Team
West pick. He led the NCHC in scoring and set a school record
with 29 goals in a season. Archibald became just the second
Maverick to earn first team honors.
It has become common for UNO to be one of the nation’s
attendance leaders, and that did not change in Blais’ fifth
season behind the bench with the Mavericks continuing their
high-octane, fan-friendly style of play. They finished the year
ranked fifth in the country with an average of 6,331.
In 2012-13, Blais’ Mavericks put together a seven-game
winning streak in November, one win from tying the school
record. The Mavs also played in the first outdoor game in
school history on Feb. 9, 2013, facing off with North Dakota
at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha. Blais also coached forward
Ryan Walters to Second Team West All-America honors, just
the fourth Maverick to be so honored.
The Mavericks closed out their three-year tenure in
the WCHA with a winning conference record of 14-12-2,
including a mark of 8-5-1 in league road games that included
stops in Minnesota, Denver and Minnesota Duluth. It was the
third straight year they finished above .500 in WCHA road
games under Blais’ leadership.
In 2011-12, Blais led the Mavericks to a stunning upset
of No. 1-ranked, defending national champion Minnesota
Duluth, a win that ended UMD’s 17-game unbeaten streak.
The win was reminiscent of his first year at UNO when the
Mavericks beat top-ranked Miami in Oxford, Ohio to end the
RedHawks’ 23-game unbeaten streak against fellow CCHA
teams on Feb. 20, 2010.
The Mavericks were another tough team to play on the
road during the 2011-12 season, especially in conference
play. The Mavs were 6-5-3 on the road in the Western
Collegiate Hockey Association, a record that included big
wins at Wisconsin, Bemidji State, North Dakota, Michigan
Tech and Colorado College.
Under Blais’ guidance, UNO continued its trend of
attracting big crowds. The Mavericks drew a school-record
crowd of 16,138 for the opener of their series with Minnesota
Duluth, the first sellout of the CenturyLink Center in school
history.
Blais once again found himself on the international stage
in 2011-12, coaching Team USA in the 2012 World Junior
Championship in Calgary. It was the second time in three
years he had led the Americans. Blais and company won the
gold medal in 2010.
Blais became only the second coach in UNO hockey history
on June 12, 2009, succeeding Mike Kemp. In his first year
in Omaha, he guided the Mavericks to a record of 20-16-6
overall record and a 13-12-3-2 record in their final season
in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The record was
good for a sixth-place finish, the highest finish by a UNO
team since the 2006-2007 season.
The Mavericks got stronger as the year progressed. The
team was just 10-11-5 entering a weekend series with
Northern Michigan in January. The Mavs had already lost two
games to the Wildcats in November at Marquette, but they
turned the tables in the rematch, winning by scores of 7-2
and 5-3 to ignite a run in the final six weeks of the season.
Blais led UNO to a record of 8-3-1 in the final 12 games.
During that string, the Mavericks won at Notre Dame for the
first time in nearly five years, beating the Irish 5-3 in the first
game of the weekend series. They also earned their first ever
series sweep over Michigan, a team they had beaten just four
times in 31 prior meetings, with 4-3 and 4-1 wins at Qwest
Center Omaha. They followed with their win over No. 1 Miami
and closed with a 3-2 win over then-sixth ranked Bemidji
State.
Blais found a way to get the most from his players in his
first season at UNO. Eleven different players registered career
highs in either goals, assists or points during the 2009-2010
campaign. Moreover, Blais’ vaunted conditioning program
paid big dividends as the Mavericks were unbeaten (14-0-3)
when leading after the second period.
In late December of 2010, Blais took over the reins of U.S.
Junior Team at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship. He
led the U.S. to a record of 6-0-1-0. The Americans capped it
off with a 6-5 overtime win over host country Canada in the
gold medal game on Jan. 5, just the second gold ever won by
the U.S. in the World Junior tournament.
During the 2010-11 season, Blais led UNO into the WCHA
where the Mavs finished third after being chosen to finish
eighth and ninth in two pre-season polls. UNO returned to
the NCAA playoffs for just the second time in school history
and achieved a national ranking of fourth for four straight
weeks, the highest in school history.
Under Blais’ leadership, the Mavericks were 21-16-2 and
17-9-2 in their first WCHA season. The third-place finish
was the highest ever for the Mavs in conference play. UNO’s
strong showing earned Blais the nod as the WCHA’s Coach of
the Year and put him in the running for the Spencer Penrose
Trophy as Division I hockey’s top coach. It wasn’t difficult to
see why Blais earned the accolades. The Mavericks swept
their first-ever WCHA series, winning twice at Minnesota.
They followed that with a split of a non-conference series
at Michigan, a place they had won just once previously.
2014-15 OMAHA HOCKEY
DEAN BLAIS cont.
Before Christmas, the Mavericks had won and tied at always-tough St. Cloud State and
stunned pre-season favorite North Dakota, winning 1-0 at home on a goal with .3 seconds
remaining in regulation.
The second half of the year featured another stunning win over North Dakota, this
time by an 8-4 tally at vaunted Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. Typical of Blais’
teams, the Mavericks surged down the stretch with back-to-back sweeps of St. Cloud
and Wisconsin and hard-fought splits with Denver and at eventual national champion
Minnesota Duluth. Blais earned win No. 300 with a 4-3 win over the Badgers on Feb. 12 to
complete the sweep.
UNO’s return to the NCAA playoffs was short-lived as the Mavericks lost to Michigan
3-2 in overtime in the regional semifinals, but Blais once again was successful in further
raising the expectations of his players and UNO fans alike. Seven players registered career
highs in either goals, assists or points.
Blais came to UNO from the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League where he
served as head coach and general manager. As head coach of an expansion team in 200809, Blais led the Force to a record of 32-23-5. The team advanced to the USHL’s Clark Cup
Finals before losing to the Indiana Ice three games to one. He was named USHL Coach of
the Year, and the Force were named Organization of the Year.
As a college coach, Blais won NCAA Division I national championships as the head
coach of the University of North Dakota in 1997 and 2000. North Dakota was the runner
up in 2001, the last of five straight NCAA appearances under Blais. Overall, the native of
International Falls, Minn. guided North Dakota to seven NCAA appearances, five regular
season WCHA titles and two WCHA playoff championships in addition to the national
championships.
Blais is a two-time winner of the Spencer Penrose Memorial Award given to the
Division I coach of the year. He is a four-time WCHA coach of the year honoree. He was
262-115-33 (.679), including five 30-win seasons, at North Dakota. In total, he spent 19
seasons with UND, nine as an assistant and 10 as the head coach. In that time, he coached
60 NHL draft picks, 28 All-Americans, three WCHA players of the year, four WCHA rookies
of the year, 40 members of the All-WCHA team and 11 All-WCHA rookie team picks.
In addition to coaching Team USA in 2010 and 2012, Blais was the head coach of the
U.S. National Junior Team in 1993 and an assistant in 1987 and 1988. He was an assistant
for Team USA in the 2000 IIHF World Championships.
He also worked for the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League from
2004-2007. He served as associate head coach during the 2005-06 season and as
director of player development in 2006-07.
Blais played college hockey at the University of Minnesota from 1969-73. In 124
games, he had 56 goals and 83 assists for 139 points. He was the Gophers’ Rookie of
the Year in 1970 and was an NCAA All-Tournament selection in 1971. After college, he
played three seasons of pro hockey with the Chicago Blackhawks’ development team
in Dallas, Texas.
He began his college career as an assistant at Minnesota in 1976-77 and then
was the head coach at Minot (N.D.) High School from 1977-80 before his stint as an
assistant at North Dakota.
Blais left UND to be the head coach at Roseau (Minn.) High School in 198990 where he led his team to the Minnesota state championship. His team was the
conference and regional champion in 1991. He then left to serve as assistant coach of
the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team that took fourth place in the Olympic Winter
Games in Albertville, France.
After the Olympics, Blais returned to the high school ranks as athletic director and
hockey coach at International Falls (Minn.) High School before rejoining North Dakota
as head coach in 1994.
Blais is the father of three grown children: Sarah, Ben and Mary Beth.

The Mavericks will face-off against Harvard for just the third time in school
history and the first time since a two-game series in Omaha in December of
1998.
Junior Jimmy Vesey leads Harvard in scoring with a nation-leading 31 goals
plus 26 assists for 57 points. He’s tied with Boston University’s Evan Rodrigues
for second in NCAA points. Kyle Criscuolo is second in scoring with 47 points
including a team best 30 assists. Patrick McNally is Harvard’s top-scoring
defenseman and ranks fifth on the team with 21 points including six goals.
Senior goaltender Steve Michalek has played all but 56 minutes for Harvard
this season, posting a record of 21-12-3 with a 2.29 goals-against average and
a .924 save percentage. He ranks ninth in the ECAC in GAA and sixth in save
percentage.
Harvard leads the ECAC in scoring, averaging 3.33 goals per game. The
Crimson is eighth in conference team defense, allowing 2.44 goals per game.
Harvard has the ECAC’s top-ranked powerplay, clicking at 20.8 percent, an
average that ranks 10th in the country. It is sixth in penalty killing at 86.4
percent which ranks 15th nationally. The Crimson rank 11th out of 12 ECAC
teams, averaging 8.9 penalty minutes per game, good for 54th in the country.
Briefly
• The Mavericks are 6-2-2 against teams from outside the NCHC this season
including a 1-0-1 record against an ECAC foe. The Mavericks tied and beat
Cornell in late October.
• The only current Mavericks to have taken part in UNO’s last NCAA appearance
are head coach Dean Blais and equipment manager Mark Pane.
• With points in both games against St. Cloud State in the NCHC Playoffs, Jake
Guentzel has now scored points in nine of the last 11 games (5-7-12).
• The Mavericks have never played in Notre Dame’s Compton Family Ice Arena.
Their last trip to South Bend was Jan. 29-30, 2010, their last season in the old
CCHA, when they earned a split with the Irish at their former home, the Joyce
Center.
• The Mavericks have had their share of tight games. In addition to five ties, 15
games have been decided by one goal (8-7-0) and six more have been decided
by two goals with three empty-netters (4-3-0). Twenty-eight of their 36 games
this year have been decided by two goals or less.
• Offensively, the Mavericks are sixth in the NCHC with an average of 2.67 goals
per game. Their average ranks 35th in the NCAA.

nationally.
Season Notables
• The Mavericks’ 3-2 OT win over then-No. 1 North Dakota on Jan. 30 marked
the third time in the last three series against a top-ranked team that they had
earned a win dating back to 2010.
• UNO’s overtime loss to North Dakota on Jan. 31 was its first in almost two
years. Their last OT setback was March 15, 2013, a 4-3 loss to Minnesota State
in a WCHA playoff game.
• Kirk Thompson earned his first career shutout on Jan. 10 in a 1-0 win
over Denver. It was one of three firsts in the series. Freshman goalie Brock
Crossthwaite earned his first career win with five saves in 9:58 of relief work in
the 5-4 win on Jan. 9. In the same game, sophomore Jono Davis scored his first
collegiate goal in his 33rd career game.
• Thompson’s 39 saves in the 1-0 win over Denver on Jan. 10 tied him with
Chris Holt for second all-time in school history for saves in a shutout. The school
record is held by Dan Ellis who made 41 saves in a 4-0 win over Ohio State on
Jan. 24, 2003.
• The Mavericks surrendered a season-high 49 shots against St. Cloud State on
Dec. 12, one game after they gave up 42 at Miami on Dec. 6. For the season,
UNO has allowed 40 or more shots four times. Before this season, they hadn’t
given up 40 or more since giving up 42 at Minnesota State on Jan. 21, 2012. The
Mavericks have been outshot in 16 of 36 games of the season. Last season, they
were outshot just seven times in 37 games.
• The 49 shots allowed to St. Cloud State on Dec. 12 is the third-highest total in
school history and the second-highest for a 60-minute game. The school record
is 57 at Ohio State on March 14, 2003.
• The Mavericks gave up five goals in the second period of their 8-2 loss at
Miami on Dec. 5. That total ties a school record for goals against in a period, first
set on Feb. 27, 1998 at Maine and equaled three other times.
• Dean Blais earned his 100th win at UNO in a 3-2 win over St. Cloud State on
2014-15 OMAHA HOCKEY
Dec. 12.
Post-Season Awards
The Mavericks had four representatives on the NCHC’s all-conference and all-rookie teams. Senior Ryan
Massa was named to the NCHC Second Team All-Conference. Both Jake Guentzel and Austin Ortega were named
Honorable Mention All-NCHC. Luc Snuggerud was named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team.
In addition, 13 Mavericks were named NCHC Academic All-Conference led by Massa who also was named to
the NCHC Scholar-Athlete Team. Other academic all-conference honorees included Ian Brady, Brian Cooper, Jake
Guentzel, Tanner Lane, Brian O’Rourke, Austin Ortega, Justin Parizek, Aaron Pearce, James Polk, Kirk Thompson,
Matt Youso and Dominic Zombo.
Alone At The Top
Sophomore Austin Ortega set the NCAA record with his 11th game-winning goal of the season in the 4-2 win
over Colorado College on March 7. He broke the record held by seven other players and had last been equaled
in 2002 by New Hampshire’s Colin Hemingway. Ortega tied the record when he tallied the game-winning goal
against Western Michigan on Feb. 14.
Ortega long ago broke the old school record previously held by Andrew Wong (2000-01) and Josh Archibald
(2013-14), who each had six game winners in 36 and 37 games respectively, on Dec. 30 in a 2-1 overtime win over
New Hampshire.
Fabulous Freshmen
The Mavericks have three players in the top 11 in NCHC freshman scoring, the most of any team. Jake Randolph
(4-19-23) is fourth, Tyler Vesel (7-14-21) is tied for fifth and Avery Peterson (10-9-19) is seventh.
Omaha is fifth in the country in scoring by its freshman class with 98 points. The Mavs have the top-scoring
freshman class in the NCHC.
Don’t Forget About Us
UNO’s sophomore class is no slouch either. The Mavericks are tied for eighth in the country in scoring by their
second-year players with 115 points. They too are the top-scoring sophomore class in the NCHC. Jake Guentzel
(35) and Austin Ortega (34) account for 61.7 percent of those points.
Among the League Leaders
Jake Guentzel (12-23-35) ranks ninth while Austin Ortega (19-15-34) is tied for 10th in NCHC scoring for all
games played. Ortega’s next goal would give UNO its third 20-goal scorer in as many years.
With 19 goals, Ortega is fifth in the conference but just two behind the leader, Denver’s Trevor Moore. Ortega’s
eight powerplay goals put him in a tie for second in the NCHC. Guentzel is tied for fifth in NCHC assists and also is
fourth in powerplay points (3-13-16) while Ortega (8-4-12) is in a six-way tie for 10th.
Ian Brady (5-15-20) is in a three-way tie for seventh in NCHC defenseman scoring while Brian Cooper (5-11-16)
is tied for 13th.
Goaltender Ryan Massa leads the NCHC with a .934 save percentage and is tied for fourth in the country. He is
second with a 2.04 goals-against average. His winning percentage (12-7-6/.600) ranks fourth.

2014-15 OMAHA HOCKEY
the Week for tallying three points, all assists, in the Mavericks’ tie and win
against Colorado College on March 6-7.
Avery Peterson was named the NCHC Rookie of the Month for January. In
just six games, he led all Mavericks in scoring with five goals and three assists
for eight points. It was the third monthly award earned by a Maverick this
season.
Peterson picked up his third Bauer NCHC Rookie of the Week award
following UNO’s series at Colorado College. He had three goals and an assist
for four points. It was the second straight weekly honor for Peterson who also
won the nod after scoring a goal and adding two assists against Denver on
Jan. 9-10. Peterson picked up UNO’s first Rookie of the Week Award following
his performance at Ohio State. He had three goals and two assists for five
points to lead all UNO players.
Austin Ortega added to the UNO trophy case during the first week in
January by earning three awards. He was named the Bauer NCHC Offensive
Player of the Week on Jan. 5. Ortega had three goals, including one gamewinner, and an assist in the Mavericks’ series against Alabama-Huntsville
(Dec. 20-21) and New Hampshire (Dec. 30-31). Two days later, he was
named both the NCHC Player of the Month and the Hockey Commissioners
Association national player of the month. In eight games in December, he
led the nation with seven goals and nine points. Four of his goals were game
winners. It was the first time the Mavericks have had a player of the month
since Josh Archibald won the award in February of 2014.
Freshman Jake Randolph picked up the Bauer NCHC Rookie of the Week
award following his four-point weekend against St. Cloud State (Dec. 12-13).
Tyler Vesel earned the same award on Nov. 24 after picking up a goal and two
assists, a plus-2 rating and five blocks in a split with No. 8 Minnesota Duluth
on Nov. 21-22.
Ian Brady also earned his first Bauer NCHC Defenseman of the Week award
and second of his career for scoring a goal and earning three assists in the
sweep against St. Cloud State.
Goaltender Ryan Massa has already earned two Bauer NCHC Goaltender
of the Week awards. He got his first after the Mavericks’ sweep at Western
Michigan on Oct. 17-18. He allowed only two goals, earned his first shutout
and finished the weekend with a 1.00 GAA and a .965 save percentage. The
shutout was the third of his career.
His second came after the Mavericks earned a tie and win at Cornell. He
made 61 saves on 63 shots for a .968 save percentage to go along with a 0.96
goals against average.
For his efforts in October, Massa was named the NCHC’s Player of the

Polling Places
The Mavericks are ninth in the weekly top 15 poll from USA Today/USA
Hockey Magazine, their 17th straight week in that poll. They also are ninth
in the latest top-20 poll from USCHO.com, their 18th week in that ranking.
Their position in both polls is up one spot from the previous week. They had
been ranked in the top five for four straight weeks before two losses at St.
Cloud State on Feb. 20-21.
The Mavericks spent two weeks at No. 4 (Feb. 2-15), matching the highest
ranking in school history first achieved in November of the 2010-11 season.

Sizing Up The NCHC
For the second straight year, the Mavericks exceeded expectations in the
NCHC, finishing third again. The Mavs were picked to finish sixth in the annual
preseason media poll put together by the NCHC. North Dakota was picked to
win the league followed by Miami and St. Cloud State. North Dakota received
12 first-place votes while Miami got nine and SCSU four. In fact, every team
finished in the predicted order of finish except for the Mavericks and St. Cloud
State which had been chosen to finish third.
Last season, the Mavericks were picked to finish last in the NCHC’s
inaugural season but posted a 13-9-2-1 record and finished in third place
while preseason No. 1 pick Miami finished in last place.
The complete poll appears in this release.
First Lamp Lighters
Freshman Grant Gallo scored his first collegiate goal at North Dakota on
Nov. 29. He is the sixth of UNO’s 10 freshmen to score his first career goal this
season. David Pope did so in the Mavericks’ 4-3 win at Ohio State on Nov. 8.
It was his second career game. Tyler Vesel scored his first goal in a 1-1 tie at
Cornell on Oct. 31, and Avery Peterson earned his in a 2-1 win over the Big Red
the next night. Jake Randolph scored his first against Minnesota State on Oct.
11. Luc Snuggerud scored in his first career game, against Minnesota State on
Oct. 10.

the NCHC (.563), behind North Dakota (11-4-0/.733), Minnesota Duluth (11-80/.579) and Miami (8-6-1/.567).
UNO’s road record this season is an extension of its long-running success
away from home. In 2013-14, the Mavericks were 7-7-2 including a mark of
6-4-2-1 in NCHC games. The Mavs have posted winning road records in league
games in each of the last four seasons, but that string was broken this year as
they were 4-5-3-3in conference play.
UNO is 66-43-8 (.598) at home during the Dean Blais era, including a record
of 11-7-2 this season. The Mavericks are 192-135-36 (.579) all-time on home
ice.
Among The Career Leaders
Senior Ryan Massa ranks in the Omaha top 10 in several career goaltending
categories. Massa is first all-time with a 2.53 goals against average and is also
first with a .914 save percentage. He is fourth with 30 career wins, and he ranks
fifth in minutes played (3,919:25). He is fifth in games played (72) and is fourth
in saves (1,762). With three career shutouts, he is tied with Jeremie Dupont for
fourth and is one from tying Jerad Kaufmann for third.
They Don’t Mind The Draft
The Mavericks have seven NHL drafted players in their lineup, one shy of the
most ever in school history. This season’s drafted players include:
Jake Guentzel - Pittsburgh ‘13
Brian Cooper - Anaheim ‘12
Tanner Lane - Winnipeg ‘10
Avery Peterson - Minnesota ‘13
David Pope - Detroit ‘13
Luc Snuggerud - Chicago ‘14
Tyler Vesel - Edmonton ‘14
The Century Mark
Senior Dominic Zombo (134) is the Mavericks’ career leader in games played,
and two of his fellow seniors have joined him in the Century Club this season.
James Polk (124) played in his 100th game at Ohio State on Nov. 7. Brian
O’Rourke (118) hit the same mark on Dec. 13 against St. Cloud State.
Junior Brian Cooper (105) played in his 100th career game at Minnesota
Duluth on Feb. 27 while junior Tanner Lane (97) is now three games away.
Last Lap
Omaha concluded its residency at the CenturyLink Center with its playoff
series against St. Cloud State on March 13-14. The Mavericks played 12 seasons
on the banks of the Missouri River but will be moving this fall to the new UNO/
community arena currently under construction at 67th and Center Streets in
midtown Omaha. The Mavericks have played at the CenturyLink Center since
the 2003-04 season and have posted a record of 128-87-27 all-time there.
The new 7,500-seat arena will be the home of UNO hockey as well as men’s
and women’s basketball and volleyball. It also will feature a second sheet of ice
that will serve as a community rink for youth hockey and figure skating as well
as an alternate practice facility for the Mavericks.
The estimated cost of the arena is $94 million, a figure that includes $39
million in private donations, and will give the Mavericks their first on-campus
home in the program’s 18-year history.
In addition, the building is expected to be a catalyst for future athletic
facilities development on the former Chili Greens golf course. Future projects
could include a baseball and softball complex as well as an indoor track facility
and tennis courts.
The first athletic event scheduled for the UNO/community arena is a hockey
game against Air Force on Oct. 23, 2015.
Replacing Two All-Americans
At the end of last season, the Mavericks said goodbye to two All-Americans.
Junior Josh Archibald was a First Team West selection last season after scoring a
school-record 29 goals and earning a team-best 43 points. He was the NCHC’s
first scoring champion, player of the year and forward of the year while also
being a top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. Archibald turned pro with
the Pittsburgh Penguins and left UNO ranked fourth in school history with 58
goals.
Senior Ryan Walters graduated as the fourth leading scorer in school history
with 134 career points. The Second Team West All-American in 2013 tied for the
second-most prolific season in school history with 52 points in 2012-13. Like
Archibald, he too was a top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award after finishing
as the WCHA’s scoring champion and a member of the All-WCHA First Team.
There’s an App for That
Fans of the Mavericks can follow their team no matter where they travel
during the 2014-15 season. Station 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce, the home of UNO
hockey on the radio, has an app that allows smartphone users to listen to
crystal clear coverage of games on their device. iPhone users can find the app
for 1180 Zone 2 and its sister station, 1620 The Zone, in the app store. Owners
of Blackberry and Droid devices can download the app at 1620thezone.com by
clicking on “In The Zone” and then clicking on the dropdown for “Zone on the
phone.”
