Pimm’s, Anyone?
The summer’s so close we can smell it. So you might want to
know how we’re planning on celebrating this year...
There’ll be parties aplenty across the country, with some of our
summer venues being transformed into the sleekest spaces
for entertaining. Give us a call on 020 7378 2970 to chat about
what we’re planning – we can’t wait to share our secrets.
The sixth edition of the Concerto Post brings you the latest
and greatest news from across the Concerto Group. Within
these pages you’ll find rather delicious recipes from our caterer
Create Food and Party Design, behind the scenes insight from
our events and plenty of tips and tricks to inspire and excite.
Ultimate Experience is the party expert; turn to page 8 for
a sneak preview of what you can expect this summer at its
exclusive London venues. Think Great British seaside in the
heart of the City at The Artillery Garden at The HAC, or head
over to the Pavilion at the Tower of London for a floral twist on
classic design inspired by William Morris.
At OXO2 the summer views will be the star of the show; this
blank canvas venue is all about flexibility. The summer look at
Old Billingsgate embraces urban luxe, whilst maintaining the
venue’s great branding opportunities. Go on – make it your own.
For a taste of the summer take a look at this edition’s recipes
from Create Food and Party Design. The spiced chicken
with spuds is a real favourite here at Concerto HQ.
Our bespoke specialist, Mask Events, has undergone quite the
transformation this year. Get a glimpse of the new branding
on page 10; the look and feel of the new Mask website draws
stylistic inspiration from 1980s punk and pop sensibility and the
likes of Stephen Sprouse.
It wouldn’t be summer without a little team-building, so on
page 11 you can find the perfect challenge for your staff,
whether you’re into brainteasers, physical activities or would
rather get people thinking a little more creatively.
Are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin...

Summer Spiced Chicken with Spuds
Serves 4
|
Prep time: 10 minutes
|
Cooking time: about 40 minutes
Reducing the cooking time by butterflying the chicken means you won’t have to wait long
at all to enjoy this summer favourite. Add more or less chillies according to your taste.
Ingredients
Method
1 x 1.9kg whole chicken
1. Preheat oven to 180°C.
60g butter at room temperature
1 tsp sweet paprika
¼ tsp ground hot chillies
3 cloves garlic, crushed
½ cup flat leaf parsley, chopped
¼ cup fresh oregano, chopped
¼ tsp sea salt
¼ tsp ground black pepper
1 lemon, zested
4 potatoes, peeled and cut into wedges
1 tablespoon olive oil
2. To butterfly the chicken, use a sharp
knife or kitchen scissors to cut down
either side of the backbone. Remove
the backbone. Open the chicken
outwards and using a sharp knife,
remove the rib bones. Wipe out the
bird with paper towel.
3. Turn the chicken over and, starting
at the neck end, insert your fingers
between the skin and the flesh of the
breast. Carefully create a pocket in
the breasts, thighs and drumsticks.
4. Mix the butter with paprika, chilli,
garlic, parsley, oregano, salt, pepper
and lemon zest. Spread the butter
under the skin.
5. Cut the lemon in half, and place cut
side down in a baking dish. Place the
chicken on top of the lemons, and
put the potatoes around the sides.
Roast for 45-50 minutes or until the
skin is richly golden. Carefully remove
the chicken and lemon from the pan.
Pour most of the pan juices into a cup
and toss the potatoes gently in the
remaining pan juices.
6. Put the potatoes back into the oven
until the pan juices reduce down
and the potatoes have a rich golden
colour.
7. Brush the chicken with the reserved
pan juices before serving. Serve with
salad and chilli sea salt.

Mask Welcomes Guests to Nashville
Mask Events, in conjunction with Sequel UK (GUESS Watches & Jewellery), created a brand
world exclusively for GUESS at Tobacco Dock. The bespoke event saw Mask design a theme
inspired by the brand’s AW14 collection - ‘Welcome to Nashville’.
The latest fashion campaign sees GUESS go back to its roots, with nods to the sweet,
authentic American soul of Nashville. Guests of GUESS were welcomed into a cowboythemed space, where they took part in a day of training sessions and workshops as they got to
know products from the new collection. Brand ambassadors showed guests around, allowing
them to experience the world of Guess and enjoy the ideas behind the new collection.
Training sessions were designed to be as authentic and interactive as possible, incorporating
TV screens, plenty of props and interesting design features to help guests immerse
themselves in the spirit of Nashville. And of course every moment was captured thanks to the
addition of a selfie pod.

Celebration Of Style
Launches at Royal
Liver Building
Celebration of Style kicked off its three-day style extravaganza with a
press launch at The Venue at the Royal Liver Building. The festival, which
took place from 13-15 November 2014, brought together some of the
greatest style influencers from the worlds of fashion, art, photography and
architecture at the iconic Liverpool landmark.
In attendance on the day were designer Matthew Williamson and Abbey
Clancy, who launched her latest collection ‘Abbey by Abbey Clancy’ for
Matalan. The guest list also included style guru and Cricket owner Justine
Mills, famed stylist Lorraine McCulloch and leading UK hair stylist Andrew
Collinge, as well as 80 specially invited press guests.
Guests enjoyed canapés and gin and tonics with No.3 London Dry Gin,
made from a traditional recipe by Berry Bros. & Rudd, London’s oldest
wine and spirit merchant. The contemporary space was complemented by
floral designs from the venue’s production partner Springbank. The team
created Matthew Williamson-inspired floral arrangements complete with
butterflies and bright, bold colours.
Throughout the festival The Venue at the Royal Liver Building hosted a
photography and film exhibition by renowned fashion photographer Tim
Bret Day. The exhibition also included pieces from Matthew Williamson,
The House of McQueen and Sophia Webster.

60 SECOND INTERVIEW
Tom Barrett
C r e a t e F o o d & P a rt y D e s ign
M a n a ging D ir e ct o r
Tom Barrett joined the Create Food & Party Design team in 2014,
taking over as Managing Director in the autumn. Tom brings
with him nine years of experience in Senior Executive roles at
BaxterStorey, where he headed up the brand’s entr y into Ireland and
successfully delivered the London 2012 Olympic Games contract. We
caught up with him to hear more about what brought him to Create,
and what changes we can expect from the award-winning caterer.
What attracted you to Create Food & Party Design?
Create’s reputation for great food was a huge attraction for me, but I was also attracted by the huge
potential which being part of The Concerto Group brings to the business. It is very exciting to take a
business which has lots of untapped potential and be a part of helping to make it flourish, so I couldn’t
wait to get on board.
What was your first job?
I’ve worked in hospitality throughout my working life, starting out with a summer job as a waiter in a
hotel in Ireland, aged 15. I then undertook a two year hotel management apprenticeship and worked
in hotels for three years before moving into retail catering and most recently the business and industry
sector.
How did you get into events?
Create is my first events-specific role so I bring a slightly different perspective to the business. My
previous roles all had aspects of event catering. The most significant of these was heading up the
catering operation at the Main Media Centre at Stratford’s Olympic Park during the 2012 Games.
How do you plan to develop the company?
I plan to focus on our strengths – food, service and people. I want to develop our bespoke event
business, which is well respected by venues and clients, and grow this organically. Our new Executive
Chef, Darren Deadman, and I are working on enhancing our food offer for 2015. Our Operations
Director, Oliver Barnett, and I are working on service style and the presentation of our events. I want
to develop our fantastic partnerships with event agents, giving them the catering experience they
require to deliver top class events for their clients. Over time we will explore other opportunities, but
only ones which fit the Create ethos of excellence in food and service.
O XO 2 T R IUMP HS
AT E VE NT AWA RDS
Where do you see Create in five years’ time?
In five years I want Create to be delivering first class bespoke events to our existing London clients
and venue partners. I want us to be sole caterer at a larger number of venues on the basis of the
excellent service we can deliver for those venues. I want us to be operating outside of London more.
I want us to have diversified into other areas of the hospitality sector but only when we are in

What inspires you?
Food, service and people! It’s what being in the hospitality sector is all about for me. There is huge
talent in the Create team, designing and delivering great events. In particular our expert chefs who
produce fantastic food daily and our talented event managers who guide 250 service staff to serve

The Garden Room is situated in the grounds
of Syon House, one of the last great houses
of London. The 600 year old building is home
to numerous ghosts, owing to a particularly
brutal period in the 16th Century when it saw
the public executions of Edward Seymour,
the Duke of Northumberland, Lady Jane Grey
and a priest. Even the dead King Henry VIII
visited the house. When he died his body was
brought to Syon on its way to burial - some
say he too still lurks in the grounds.

from the second a brief falls on their desks.
The secret lies in Mask’s new brand DNA, 2015’s impactful new
brand identity and a hand-picked team who adopt the roles of
inventors and curators when analysing a brief. As such, the agency
is immersed in a client-centric culture and is delivering outstandingly
creative, cultured work that is evident on the new website.
Mask delivered a one night only immersive event to a select list of
guests in collaboration with Somerset House, “Welcome To The
Deadhouse”. The event celebrated the new look and depth of the
brand whilst showcasing this unique space as one of London’s more
dramatic backdrops.
The look and feel of the new site is metropolitan, drawing stylistic
inspiration from energies that link London and New York lifestyle
and culture. The spirit of Andy Warhol was certainly in the room
when the rebranding sessions were being run.
The approach that true bespoke work is thought of as a work of
art, lovingly built from nothing, runs through the new sensibility.
Combined with years of collective experience of working with brand
dynamics, cultural drivers and guest psychology, the Mask team will
be asking clients questions that really get under the skin of the brief.
The process is a beautiful union of creativity and experience.
The results? See mask.co.uk for the fun and games.

is Unveiled
at OXO2
September saw OXO2 transformed into
a gamers’ paradise for one day only, as it
hosted Activision for the worldwide launch
of new Playstation game Destiny.
The daytime event was attended by
renowned YouTubers and bloggers, who
were invited to try their hand at the new
game and share their thoughts.
The east side of the venue was set up for
a day of gaming, with 30 console stations
fully equipped for guests to get to grips
with Destiny.
As the day drew to a close an evening
reception began, attended by 350 guests
including celebrities and well-known
media figures. Catering at the reception
was provided by OXO2’s in-house chefs,
keeping guests fuelled until the big
‘midnight moment’ when the official launch
of the game going on sale was celebrated.
A decade ago Asia faced one of the worst earthquakes in recorded
history, resulting in the catastrophic Boxing Day tsunami, which claimed
230,000 lives and devastated coastal areas across the region.
The events industry quickly gathered to support victims, raising
much-needed funds to help those affected rebuild their lives and their
communities. As part of the relief effort we organised a party, which
raised £10,000 for the people of Sri Lanka.

Think and Thank
A motto on the building’s gates dates back to
its Cromwellian links and the Putney Debates
of about 1646. In the early 1650s Cromwell
oversaw a somewhat puritanical Church in
England; the words ‘Think and Thank’ are to
be found in churches of that period. Oliver
Cromwell billeted his officers at Winchester
House. And thus the connection.

FISH & CHIP CONES
Home Bargains, a chain of discount stores operating throughout the United
Kingdom, took a trip back in time in January when, with the help of JD
Parties, the company hosted a night of spectacular 80s themed parties
across the country.
For the second year running, staff from over 370 Home Bargains stores were
invited to party the night away on the 3rd January, at 10 different venues. In
all there were 4,160 guests celebrating at three sports stadiums, two Hilton
hotels, two conference venues, one museum, one equestrian centre and one
marquee.
Every guest was welcomed into their venue with an arrival drink, followed by
a sumptuous three-course meal, they then partied the night away in true 80s
style with lots of glow sticks and even more classic 80s anthems.
The venues included JD Parties’ three Christmas venues, Cheshire’s
Tatton Park, Liverpool’s Aintree Racecourse, and Birmingham’s ICC, each
of which has just finished a season of stunning themed Christmas parties
– the Speakeasy Ball, Hollywood Ball and Glitter Ball; where guests were
entertained by aerialists, a fire spectacular and live music.
Guests were encouraged to dress up and truly embrace the theme – and
some attendees really excelled themselves! We saw everything from
Beetlejuice and the Honey Monster to the Smurfs. We also had guests on
roller skates and neon outfits galore.
We love polar bears. Which is why we could never let a past issue of The Concerto Post
go to waste - we always recycle them into something special!
The most observant of our guests might have noticed something a little bit different
about the fish and chips we served throughout the summer… The cones were made of no
ordinary newspaper. They were Concerto Posts, recycled in the most delicious of ways.

Concerto Live Takes Top Performers
to Hong Kong and Macau
November 2014 saw one automotive financial services client go all out
on the destination for its incentive programme, when 36 top performing
dealer principals jetted to the Pearl of the Orient, Hong Kong, before a
short trip to nearby Macau.
Concerto Live needed another destination that would have guests
climbing the ladder to sales success, and as ever it had to be a city of
As well as building the brand, Concerto Live also built the website for
the programme, featuring sales results and teasers. Monthly e-mails kept
dealers’ interest and ensured everyone was motivated to sell finance, in
the hope of a place on this once-in-a-lifetime trip.
The lucky 36 who qualified enjoyed three nights in the Chinese metropolis,
staying at one of Hong Kong’s premier hotels, the exquisite Mandarin
Oriental, before heading across to Macau, Asia’s gambling mecca.
Guests qualified for this trip via a programme Concerto Live devised
called East Meets West, a league table system that saw dealers gain
points for every finance package sale made in their dealership.
Incentivising your Workforce: To Buy or To Fly?
When it comes to attracting and keeping hold of the best talent in the
business, motivation is the name of the game. A successful workforce must be
motivated towards common business goals and targets, but what’s the best
way to incentivise your team and hold onto them, whilst rewarding them for
their results?
You could spend your days standing behind staff with a megaphone, shouting
“WORK, COME ON! SELL SELL SELL!” It worked for the Wolf of Wall Street,
but let’s face it, it’s not really befitting to modern day corporate culture.
True motivation begins when your people buy into your values and feel part of
the bigger picture, but in a world of ambitious sales targets, where markets are
competitive and fast-paced, incentives are undeniably vital. So what exactly
does that famous ‘carrot’ look like?
A lot of traditional organisations are still using cash-only incentives, but
does that really offer value for money, or set your company apart from your
competitors? Money by itself is the most expensive incentive according to
Kong to Macau via a hydrofoil for the last leg of the trip. The final day
included a tour of the city, with its glitzy casinos and top-class restaurants.
Guests enjoyed the best of the Mediterranean and Las Vegas whilst
staying in the Venetian Hotel. Even the day of departure began with
tickets to the Manny Pacquiao world title boxing match.
This incentive programme worked for Concerto Live’s client and dealers
experiences. In Hong Kong that’s exactly what you get – jaw-dropping
sights with unique Chinese culture.
But the experiences didn’t stop there! The group journeyed from Hong
A welcome dinner in a private box at Happy Valley racecourse kicked off
a six-day programme of Hong Kong experiences. Guests saw the famous
night horse racing, were whisked through the city’s markets, left awestruck
watching the Symphony of Lights show from a Chinese Junk, took to the
seas for a dragon boat race and enjoyed dinner on the top floor of the
old Bank of China.
alike – dealers were incentivised into getting on an amazing money-can’t-
a Harvard Business Review study, which says that cash incentives are purely
transactional for the employee, where as other rewards can help form
relationships.
With incentive travel, the world really is your oyster!
Travel is the number one motivator for employees. It goes back to the fact that
for brands to really engage with people, they need to create experiences. It’s
easy to be put off by the idea of travel – taking a group of people away sounds
like it’s an expensive and time-consuming thing to do, but companies who
are willing to do more than just meet or beat industry pay grades will reap the
rewards.
When purchasing travel and entertainment for a group, many ‘money can’t buy’
experiences become much more accessible and affordable, meaning you’ll be
able to create an incredible adventure that really packs a punch and lives long
in the memories of your workforce.
Group travel opens doors for unforgettable and usually unobtainable activities,
from igloo making competitions in Swedish Lapland to sushi suppers up in the
highest restaurant in the world. Or perhaps your team would prefer private
shopping sprees in the souks of Marrakech or a dinner beneath the Eiffel Tower?
buy trip to the other side of the world, while the client benefited from an
uplift in sales. And while Concerto Live can’t say Hong Kong and Macau
proved to be the unquestionable driving force behind this sales spike,
well… it must have helped!
An important internal communications and culture-building tool, an incentive
trip not only provides your staff with the time away from their desks to cement
great relationships, but also helps build goodwill, loyalty and advocacy.
Incentivising Externally
The principle also works well when incentivising clients or brokers. As well
as encouraging people to consider your company above your competitors,
there are various touch points of an incentive programme, such as the
communications campaign, venue, food or activity choice that can be tailored
to build a real brand experience rather than just a business trip.
The next time you have an ambitious business objective or sales target to meet,
consider the bigger picture and speak to Concerto Live about designing an
incentive experience. An incentive trip that represents what you stand for as a
brand and provide something people wouldn’t be able to get elsewhere – whether
that’s with cash or from one of your competitors.
