Isle of Eriskay
overview
Travel from the mainland or hop over from Skye,
chances are your first visit to the Outer Hebrides
won’t be your last.
North and South Uist
Benbecula
Two islands in their own
right, you can either sail
to Lochmaddy in North
Uist or to Lochboisdale
in South Uist. Or, why not
bring your car or bike and
use the road causeways
that connect the two to
experience what each
has to offer.
Aptly described as a
‘stepping stone’ between
North and South Uist
because of the road
causeways that link the
islands, Benbecula has
more than enough to merit
a visit of its own. You’ll
find walking, cycling, golf,
horse and pony riding,
even a sculpture trail.
Isle of Barra
Lewis and Harris
Berneray
Often thought of as
individual islands when in
fact they are connected by
a narrow strip of land, Lewis
and Harris were crowned
number one island in the
TripAdvisor 2014 Travellers’
Choice Islands Awards for
their natural beauty and long
list of things to see and do.
Accessible by causeway –
or raised road – from both
Harris and North Uist, the
small island of Berneray
boasts sands so white and
waters so clear that you’d
be forgiven for thinking
you were somewhere
more tropical altogether.

Literacy Trails, South Uist
Whether you sail over
direct from Oban to Barra
then on to Eriskay via
the inter-island ferry, or
travel down from South
Uist, these small but
incredibly scenic islands
are well worth a visit for
their outstanding natural
beauty.

hidden gems
LEWIS
Now you can explore the renowned natural
beauty of Barra from a whole new vantage
point – underwater with a Barra Snorkel Safari.
Run by Stephen and Paul, both of whom are
experienced divers, these 90-minute sessions
allow you to get up close to everything from
sea urchins and anemones to starfish and
crabs – even the odd seal, on occasion.
Dry suits, equipment and safety briefings
are provided, and there are different sites for
different abilities: from the shallow waters
of Eoligarry that are ideal for beginners and
families with younger children, to the deeper
waters of Vatersay Causeway and Catalina that
are popular with more experienced snorkelers.
Find out more at www.barrasnorkelsafari.co.uk

other sea creatures so close to the shore
was unbelievable.”

Something old, something new
– North Uist’s award-winning
Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum

the social, economic and

The Outer Hebrides is home
to six golf courses, each with

“The food at Ardhasaig is excellent - the dinner was just delicious and the breakfast really couldn’t be
faulted, it was all homemade juices and jams, freshly baked bread etc. The rooms all have an amazing
view of the Harris scenery. The host is very friendly and will make sure you have a lovely stay. This small
hotel is really worth it.” Need we say more! Self catering for up to 6 persons also available from £300 pw.
