WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO KEEP YOURSELF
HEALTHY?
The SGS over the spring and summer will be updating the Health & Wellness section of our

A Message From The Kingston Regional Heritage Fair
HISTORY FAIR
The Kingston Regional Heritage Fair is seeking volunteers to judge a “History Fair” for
elementary students in Kingston and the surrounding area. Knowledge of Canadian History
is an asset, but not a requirement. Orientation and judging forms will be provided. The Fair
takes place on May 7, 2015 from 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM in Duncan McArthur Hall. Volunteers
will interview approximately 6-8 elementary students about their research projects and
recommend superior projects for medals and prizes. This a great opportunity to make intergenerational connections with the community outside campus, learn new things about the
local area, enjoy creative expressions of different cultures and time periods, and acquire
community involvement items and references for graduate/post-graduate applications. For
more information, please visit http://www.krhf.ca or contact [email protected].
Volunteer applications are due April 6th.

A Message From The Queen’s Department of English
DEMYSTIFYING DIGITAL HUMANITIES INITIATIVE
Is your research related to the Humanities or the Arts? Are you practicing or interested in
practicing your scholarship in the Digital Humanities (DH)? Do you have a project idea that
you need technical, skills-based, or community-based support for? Are you thinking about a
DH-related research project, but you are not sure what kind of support is available for you?
Do you wonder if your project or idea could be a DH project?
The Demystifying Digital Humanities Initiative invites students, teaching fellows, adjunct
instructors, faculty, and staff to an informal brainstorming session about DH needs on
campus. Please join us on Thursday, April 2 at 2:00pm in the Third Floor Lounge at the
Grad Club to discuss resources that you’d like to see on campus, barriers you’ve
experienced to your work, and resources that the Initiative can work towards providing.
The Initiative will have hosted three events this semester, and we’d like to shape the future
of the Initiative around what the DH community at Queen’s needs. The Demystifying DH
Initiative is a group of humanities scholars at all levels of their career. The Initiative seeks to
support collaboration amongst scholars and students; provide opportunities for emerging
and established Digital Humanities practitioners to showcase and build upon their
knowledges; and facilitate community at Queen’s Campus, at its satellite campus at
Herstmonceux Castle, and in the broader community.
The Digital Humanities (DH) is an emerging field concerned with investigating the
intersections between digital culture, technology, and traditional arts and humanities
disciplines. It includes using digital tools (such as visualization or textual analytics) to
address humanistic questions, and applying the skills of critical analysis native to humanities
disciplines to the study of contemporary digital culture, both scholarly and popular.

A Message From Union Gallery
UNION GALLERY SURVEY
In 2012 the Union Gallery lost their undergraduate student funding at referendum, and this
crisis precipitated a need to reconsider and re-imagine their future as an art gallery and
cultural venue on campus.
At the end of this newsletter you will find a tick-box survey - asking a variety of questions
about the Gallery. Please take some time to fill it out and either email it to
[email protected] or send a hard copy to the Union Gallery attention “Jamie and Kristian”.
Also, if you want to pass it on to any friends, acquaintances, colleagues or students (across
all and any departments/programs) who you think might be interested, that would be
appreciated.
The data collected will directly inform the strategic review, and accordingly a cultural venue
on campus.
RECYCLE AT THE SGPS OFFICE
Drop off your used batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs, used electronics, ink
cartridges and old cell phones at the SGPS office and we will recycle them.
ISIC CARD FOR SGPS MEMBERS
The SGPS produces International Student Identity Cards (ISIC) for all SGPS members at no
additional cost. All you need to do is bring your validated Queen’s student card to our office
and we will produce the card for you on the spot.

Extended Travel Coverage
Canadian Citizens Only
Extending Provincial Coverage
If a student’s trip duration outside of their province of residence is scheduled to be
longer than 6 continuous months (7 months for Ontario), it is necessary to
obtain an extension of their provincial health insurance coverage from their Ministry of
Health prior to departure.
As an example, for Ontario residents, this means contacting their local ServiceOntario
centre in person and applying for an absence. They may need to show a document
explaining the reason for their absence; for example, an acceptance letter from their
school abroad, including information regarding the courses they will be taking and the
duration of their stay. They will also need to provide three pieces of identification. The
list of acceptable IDs can be found here:
http://www.forms.ssb.gov.on.ca/mbs/ssb/forms/ssbforms.nsf/GetFileAttach/
014-9998E-82~1/$File/9998-82E.pdf
Once they have applied for a provincial health insurance extension, they will need to
call ServiceOntario at 1-888-359-8807 and request that they mail them a letter
detailing that they’ve applied for an OHIP extension.
For other provinces or territories, please call your provincial Ministry of Health for
detailed instructions on how to apply for a health insurance extension.
Extending SGPS Coverage
Students participating in a school sanctioned study or work term outside of their
province of residence must apply to RWAM to extend their travel coverage beyond the
120 day maximum. To request an extension, students need to complete an
Application for Student Study/Work Term Travel Coverage Extension form,
which can be found here:
https://www.studentvip.ca/Forms/SGPS/Study_Abroad.pdf?caseredirect=1
This form needs to be submitted at least 3 weeks prior to departure. In addition, the
provincial extension letter from the Ministry of Health needs to be attached to the
Application for Student Study/Work Term Travel Coverage Extension form.
Please submit these documents to the attention of Pam Asselstine, Assistant Executive
Director ([email protected]). For more information, please see our website.
