Statewide 2015 Festival: Now is the time to prereg-
ister for the festival! You not only can save $$s, but you’ll
have an easy time getting into the dance hall on Friday,
Saturday and Sunday (that’s May 29, 30 and 31)--no paying at the door hassles. Please look at the website for
registration form and all the information: http://www.
statewidefolkdance.com. On it you will find the entire
brochure by clicking on the top line: “Click here to see
the Festival Flyer”. For the Pre-registration form, click
on “Pre-registration”. Oh yes, you can also at the same
time order and select what you’d like for lunch and dinner on Saturday, and lunch on Sunday! (If you come to
the door, there will likely not be enough food for you and
you’ll have to lose your parking spot to go out and eat!)
Plus, you can order your t-shirts and tote-bags which
you can pick up at registration!
It is also time to encourage all your out-of-town dance
friends to pre-register. They must make their hotel reservation by April 29. The Host Hotel is the Hampton Inn
in Kearny Mesa which has very nicely appointed rooms,
a full continental breakfast, and free parking and free
wifi.
If you hear of people discouraged to come because of
the Rock’n’Roll marathon, let them know that we’ve had
word from the marathon’s public relations director that
if one enters Balboa Park from the south, there will be no
problems with traffic caused of the runners (Route 163
northbound will be impacted by the runners). Under
“Facilities” on the website, you can learn the exact route
recommended.
Next Statewide Planning Meeting will be Sunday, April
26, from 10 - 1 in the Santa Fe Room.
Chin’s Tuesday in April. Our wonderful co-teacher,
Chin Yu, will have the program on Tuesday, April 14.
Come and learn some new dances taught expertly! Chin
will have one Tuesday to herself every month!

In Memoriam
Peggy Lieb (Margaret Cary Lieb)
5/10/1925 - 2/28/2015
It’s hard to believe that this gentle and elegant lady is gone. It was only a month ago
that she came to Sunday dancing. Though
Peggy has not been dancing very much the past couple of
years, she almost always came to watch on Sundays. She
loved dancing and did it all--folk dancing, round dancing,
ballroom and square dancing. It’s sad how much we don’t
know about our dancing friends. Who knew that Peggy
was a tennis star who advanced to Wimbledon when she
was young! We will miss seeing her.
Anthony (Tony) Davida
Tony was born and raised in NY City. He has driven everything including NY Taxis so we asked him to be our
driver for Statewide. Unfortunately for us he got sick. He
has had an Army career of 44 years as mechanic for all
military vehicles. When he retired he bought a big motorhome and towed a large car. With his home and car on
the road, he visited almost all states in the US and provinces in Canada. He loves people and is funny. A special
friend of Ilene Sandoval, Tony danced with SDIFDC for
many years. He came to the New Year’s Eve parties and
helped decorate, he came to other parties ready to help.
He smiled on us in his gentle manner and we will continue to see that smile...

The Many Health Benefits of Dancing (con-
tinued)
Twenty-seven studies on the effectiveness of dance
movement therapy concluded that dancing should
be encouraged as part of treatment for people with
depression and anxiety.
Though other forms of exercise can have many of the
same benefits, dancing is more appealing to some
people, so they are more likely to stick with it. For
example, at the end of a study that compared tango
dancing to mindfulness meditation, 97 percent of
participants chose to receive a voucher for a tango
class rather than one for mindfulness meditation.
(By the way, the study found that both activities reduced depression, but only dancing reduced stress
levels.)
In another study, attendance was higher with waltzing than conventional exercise, possibly because
“dance is a form of exercise in which movement,
social interaction, and fun are mixed together,” the
researchers said.
