US wage hikes: A publicity stunt? Washington by Jeremy Tordjman A fter turning a deaf ear to pressure for years, US businesses are digging into their pockets to improve the lot of the lowest-paid workers, but also their own images. Faced with a mounting campaign to address a growing gap between the rich and the poor, and complaints that low wages leave workers dependent on state handouts, some of the largest US employers have announced sweeping wage increases in recent weeks. After department store Walmart and clothing chain The Gap said they would raise worker pay, this week fast food giant McDonald’s announced a hike for 90,000 of its workers. The wave of companies showing a greater appreciation for their workforce has even spread to the tech industry. Microsoft announced it would require its contractors to extend paid leave to thousands of people that regularly work for the company but are not Microsoft staff. The companies have made sure the public takes note. McDonald’s took a full-page advertisement out in the New York Times heralding its generosity. “We’re announcing a first step in rewarding the team members who work so hard for our brand every day,” it said. WalMart Stores chief executive Doug McMillon told workers that the world’s largest retailer would “continue to provide the ladder that any of you can climb.” Political and market pressure But the moves, which sought to raise hourly wages above the official minimums -- McDonald’s promised it would pay an average $10 an hour by the end of 2016 -- still fell short of a national campaign calling for a $15 an hour standard. That raised questions about whether the moves are simply a publicity effort for the firms. The US labour union federation, the AFL-CIO, which has been fighting for higher wages for retail and food chain workers, dismissed the question. A debate has mounted over why only the wealthiest Americans have seen income gains while wages and salaries for the lowest 80 per cent have stagnated or declined. “It’s not essential to figure out whether or not they did it for good reasons. The key issue here is that it rewards months of mobilization,” deputy policy director Kelly Ross said. The companies could also be responding to fundamental economics. The US economy has been growing steadily and companies have added some 3.4 million jobs in the past year alone, tightening the jobs market somewhat. At the same time, a debate has mounted over why only the wealthiest Americans have seen income gains while wages and salaries for the lowest 80 per cent have stagnated or declined. Worker groups want the government to address it by forcing up the official minimum wage. But the political gridlock in Washington leaves the focus on companies. For several years President Barack Obama has pressed Congress without success to increase the federal minimum wage, stuck at $7.25 an hour since 2009. Some analysts express worry of the risk that the large firms raising wages will make business harder for small companies with less financial power. The playing field, it seems, is uneven. W hen something surprises a baby, like an object not behaving the way expected, the baby not only focuses on that object but ultimately learns more about it than from a similar yet predictable object, finds a study. Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University have found that infants have innate knowledge about the world and when their expectations are defied, they learn best. For young learners, the world is an incredibly complex place filled with dynamic stimuli. How do learners know what to focus on and learn more about, and what to ignore? The research suggested that infants use what they already know about the world to form predictions. When the predictions are shown to be wrong, infants use it as a special opportunity for learning. When babies are surprised, they learn much better, as though they are taking the occasion to try to figure something out about their world. Infants are not only equipped with core knowledge about fundamental aspects of the world, but from early in their lives, they harness this knowledge to empower new learning, the authors noted in a paper published in the journal Science. The Taliban have reportedly seen defections to the Islamic State in recent months, with some insurgents expressing their disaffection with the one-eyed warrior-cleric who went into hiding since the 2001 US-led invasion of T Afghanistan. The biography, posted just after midnight on the Taliban’s main website to commemorate Omar’s 19th year as supreme leader, described him as being actively involved in “jihadi activities”, dispelling the speculation that he had died. Despite being “regularly tracked by the enemy, no major change and disruption has been observed in the routine works of Omar in organizing the jihadi activities as the leader of the Islamic Emirate,” it says. Lionizing the “charismatic personality”, the biography also Taliban leader Mullah Omar contained several anecdotes of battlefield valour and described the RPG-7 grenade launcher as Omar’s “preferred weapon of choice”. The withdrawn, remote figure has not made a public appearance since the 2001 invasion, and has hardly ever been photographed. Pope urges end to ‘absurd violence’ Vatican City ope Francis has appealed yesterday for an end to “absurd violence” in hotspots around the world saying the international community must not stand by in the face of the “immense humanitarian tragedy” in Syria and Iraq. In his traditional Easter message, the 78-year-old pontiff said he was praying for those killed in armed conflicts, including the students massacred by Somali gunmen at a university in Kenya. Tens of thousands of pilgrims huddled under a sea of P umbrellas in a rain-soaked St Peter’s Square to hear the pope deliver his “Urbi et Orbi” (To the City and World) blessing, broadcast live to dozens of countries. In his third Easter message since his election as pope in 2013, the head of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics prayed “for peace, above all, for Syria and Iraq, that the roar of arms may cease”. He also prayed for the victims of Thursday’s attack in Kenya that left 148 people dead, with survivors saying the militants spared Muslim students but taunted Christian and Jewish students before killing them. Earlier Francis greeted pilgrims personally as he rode through the flower-bedecked square aboard his open Popemobile after presiding over Easter mass. Speaking from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, Francis also said the framework nuclear accord reached Thursday between Iran and six major world powers inspired hope for “a definitive step toward a more secure and fraternal world”. Zia, who is the leader of the Bangladesh B Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia waves as she arrives for a court appearance in Dhaka yesterday National Party (BNP), is accused of embezzling charitable funds. Authorities had confined her inside her office compound in an upscale district of Dhaka on January 3, after she threatened to lead a massive antigovernment rally through the capital on the first anniversary of a disputed national election. A judge issued an arrest warrant against the former prime minister in late February after she repeatedly failed to attend hearings in the graft cases. Zia was granted bail in two graft cases yesterday after she appeared before a special court The BNP and a 20-party opposition alliance that she leads had boycotted the election because it was not held under a neutral caretaker administration, as in the past. Police padlocked her office’s front gate, used pepper spray on her as she tried to leave the compound, and parked ten trucks loaded with sand and bricks outside the gate to block the exit. While confined to her office, a defiant Zia urged supporters to enforce a nationwide transport blockade. The stoppage was intended to force her bitter rival, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to quit and pave the way for a new general election under a neutral administration. Bloodmoney Pakistani kills 10 in dowry dispute Peshawar man in northwest Pakistan gunned down his former fiancée and nine of her relatives yesterday, police said, six months after murdering his own parents and two brothers for refusing to pay his dowry. The 25-year-old suspect, whom police named as Mir Ahmad Shah, was on the run after carrying out the pre-dawn attack with an AK-47 assault rifle in the Charsadda district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. “He stormed the house and killed all ten family members while they were asleep,” district police chief Shafiullah A Khan said, adding that two children and four women were among the dead. Khan said Shah was already a fugitive wanted for the murder of his parents and two elder brothers last year. His family had refused to accept a demand by the father of his then-fiancée for a residential plot as a dowry settlement. Gulzar Khan, another police official, said that after murdering members of his own direct family, Shah became enraged at his prospective in-laws for making the demand. Shah was also the second cousin of his former fiancée, said Abdul Rashid, another senior police officer. Police said they had launched an extensive search, raiding three of his suspected hideouts and tightening security at entry points to the neighbouring tribal region where he may try to seek shelter. Marriages in Pakistan are usually arranged, and often take place between cousins. Brides’ families sometimes demand a hefty dowry as a form of insurance in case the marriage ends in divorce. Contrary to other societies, dowry in Islam is paid by the groom to the bride. 26 Monday, April 6, 2015 Looking for Assistant/ Accountant with knowledge in investments & shares. Visa Available. Belgian Greg Van Avermaet took third ahead of Peter Sagan of Slovakia in fourth. But it was a breakaway led by last year’s ParisRoubaix winner Terpstra 30km from home that made the difference with only 2014 Milan-San Remo winner Kristoff able to follow, winning his second ‘Monument’ race. “I raced here a lot as a young rider, I watched this race a long time before I got A the chance to participate,” said Kristoff, 27. It was that break on the Kruisberg climb, the third last of 19 on a brutal day that covered 264km, that made the decisive split. Terpstra knew that Kristoff was the better sprinter by far, although both had shown great form in the last month with the Norwegian finishing second to John Degenkolb in the defence of his Milan-San Remo title before winning Three Days of De Panne last week, having triumphed in three of the four stages. Terpstra had also been in good form having finished second at Gent-Wevelgem a week ago but although he forced Kristoff into leading for much of the last 10km and leading out the sprint, when he finally made his attack, there was no contest. dominant side throughout the opening period, and while it took until the final moments of the half before they were able to make their superiority count, it was a lead they richly deserved. D 30 Monday, April 6, 2015 Mathieu saves Barca Madrid efender Jeremy Mathieu scored the only goal of the game as Barcelona edged out stubborn Celta Vigo to restore their four-point lead over Real Madrid in La Liga’s title race. The French centre-half thundered a header past Sergio Alvarez on 73 minutes to break the hosts’ resistance at Balaidos and maintain their advantage over secondplaced Los Blancos. Just one of two teams to beat Barca at Camp Nou this season, Celta reminded the Catalans how dangerous they can be when Joaquin Larrivey saw his low drive pushed away by Claudio Bravo after 10 minutes. Despite an abundance of possession, the Primera Liga leaders struggled in the final third but did come close on 13 minutes, with Neymar firing wide after Lionel Messi’s curler was well saved by Alvarez. It was the hosts who finished the half in the ascendancy. First, Eduardo Berizzo’s side had a goal chalked off for offside, before Larrivey inexplicably failed to convert after being found D by Fabian Orellana’s cross. With four successive Liga victories under their belt, Luis Enrique’s side began finding their rhythm in the second half and Neymar’s stunning effort was also ruled out for offside on 48 minutes. Unperturbed, Barcelona carried on in the same vein as Messi perked up and fired wide, before Dani Alvesspurned arguably the chance of the game after 63 minutes and missed the target from a fine position. It was not all oneway traffic, however, as Celta found their firsthalf fluency at times and Hugo Mallo curled just wide on 71 minutes - a warning that the visitors finally acknowledged. Mathieu scored in backto-back outings as he rose highest to plant a fine header past Alvarez from Xavi’s free kick. Things went from bad to worse for Celta in the dying stages as Orellana was given his appearing to throw a piece of turf at Sergio Busquets’s face as the clash ended on a sour note. SPORTS Monday, April 6, 2015 Trott likely to open with Cook Basseterre ngland are hoping their long search for an opening batsman to replace former captain Andrew Strauss will end with the possible return of Jonathan Trott to their Test team for the series against the West Indies. Trott is back in the England set-up for the first time since he left the 201314 Ashes tour after the first Test in Brisbane with what was later diagnosed as situational anxiety. England have struggled to find a new opening partner for captain Alastair Cook since Strauss retired in 2012, with the likes of Nick Compton, Michael Carberry and Australian-born Sam Robson all tried and discarded. Cook’s next partner appears to be one of Trott or Yorkshire’s Adam Lyth, who was the leading run-scorer in the top division of English county cricket last season. “We’re lucky in one sense that we’re choosing between E Djokovic champion Novak Djokovic beats Murray for fifth Miami Masters title Miami orld number one Novak Djokovic defeated Andy Murray 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 6-0 yesterday to win his fifth Miami Masters title. Serbia’s Djokovic pushed his career record against the Scot to 18-8, adding the triumph in the championship match on the hardcourts of Miami to victories over Murray this year in the Australian Open final and the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Masters. Today, Djokovic will tie Spain’s Rafael Nadal for the sixth-most weeks spent at the top of the rankings, sitting atop the summit for the 141st week in his career. Murray, meanwhile, is poised to return to number three in the world. The Scot started strong in a bid to end a six-match skid against the Serb. The two traded four breaks of serve in the first eight games of the tense first set. Djokovic was quick to seize the initiative in the tiebreaker, racing to a 4-0 lead, and despite W two very good players,” Cook was quoted as saying by cricket. com.au yesterday. “Ever since Straussy announced his retirement we haven’t quite found consistency in that position so whoever gets that chance gets the opportunity to try and nail that down. “But we haven’t discussed that yet.” Mumbai Indians T he Mumbai Indians are one of the most consistent teams of the IPL. After a poor first couple of seasons, they have made it to at least the last four in every season. A major reason behind this is their ability to retain core players like Lasith Malinga, Harbhajan Singh, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard. Squad : Rohit Sharma, Aditya Tare, Ambati Rayudu, Corey Anderson, Harbhajan Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Josh Hazlewood, Keiron Pollard, Lasith Malinga, Marchant de Lange, Pawan Suyal, Shreyas Gopal, Lendl Simmons, Unmukt Chand, R Vinay Kumar, Parthiv Patel, Aaron Finch, Pragyan Ojha, Mitchell McClenaghan, Akshay Wakhare, Aiden Blizzard, Hardik Pandya, Siddhesh Lad, J Suchith, Nitish Rana, Abhimanyu Mithun Strengths: Just like CSK, Mumbai can boast of some really quality Indian players like Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Harbhajan Singh, Pragyan Ojha, R Vinay Kumar and Parthiv Patel in their ranks. With Ricky Ponting as the coach, Anil Kumble as the chief mentor and Jonty Rhodes as the fielding coach, MI have an excellent backroom staff, all of whom were excellent players during their time. Mumbai have arguably the best pace attack in the IPL. Lasith Malinga, one of the best pacers in limited overs cricket, is at the helm of it. The other members are Mitchell McClenaghan, Josh Hazlewood, Marchant de Lange, Jasprit Bumrah and Corey Anderson, all of whom can bowl at a brisk pace and 31 a double fault Djokovic had quickly wrapped up the decider 7/3. The second set went with serve until Djokovic, looking weary and frustrated, was broken in the final game, gifting Murray a double fault for 0-30 before the Brit belted two winners to force a third set. But the Serb regrouped, storming through the third set for the win. Murray had a glimmer of hope of avoiding the undesired “bagel” with a break chance against Djokovic in the sixth game. He couldn’t convert and Djokovic gave himself a match point with a cunning drop shot-lob combination. The Serb finished Murray off on his first opportunity, pulling him out wide with a serve then stroking a winner into the open court on match point. “It was brutal,” Djokovic said of another physical battle between the two. “I just managed to play the third set the way I was supposed to.” Rajasthan Royals T also swing the ball. Weaknesses: Mumbai have been guilty of losing their form in the dying stages of the IPL, when it matters the most. Thrice they have made it to the last four and crashed out and also lost one final. Lack of depth in spin department: Harbhajan Singh almost single handedly mans this department. he Rajasthan Royals are the dark horses of the IPL. Though they haven’t tasted any success after winning the first season, they always punch above their weight. Being the talent warehouse of the IPL, they have churned out some really good players like Ravindra Jadeja, Yusuf Pathan, Ajinkya Rahane and James Faulkner over the years. Squad: Shane Watson, Abhishek Nayar, Ajinkya Rahane, Ankit Nagendra Sharma, Ben Cutting, Deepak Hooda, Dhawal Kulkarni, Dishant Yagnik, James Faulkner, Kane Richardson, Karun Nair, Pravin Tambe, Rahul Tewatia, Rajat Bhatia, Sanju Samson, Steven Smith, Stuart Binny, Tim Southee, Vikramjeet Malik, Chris Morris, Juan Theron, Barinder Singh Saran, Dinesh Salunkhe, Sagar Trivedi, Pardeep Sahu. Strengths: 2 Rajasthan’s biggest strength is that they do not rely on a few players and it is often a team effort that yields them success; every member of the team has a well defined role that he has to perform. The Jaipur-based franchise always spring a surprise or two. The opponents can never really know what to expect when they are playing the Royals. This keeps them honest and allows Rajasthan to dominate them. Though Rajasthan have an excellent pace attack, their medium pacers are a trump card for them. Rajat Bhatia, Stuart Binny, Abhishek Nayar and Vikramjeet Malik are all wily customers who can take pace off the bowl and dry the runs. Weaknesses: Captain’s lack of form: Shane Watson, the captain and a vital cog of Rajasthan’s team, has been in indifferent form of late. With both bat and ball, he has been a pale shadow of his former self. Lack of depth in spin department: A lot will depend on Pravin Tambe, the only experienced spinner in the Rajasthan camp. An injury to him would mean that youngsters like Rahul Tewatia and Ankit Sharma will have to handle the svpin department. SPORTS Djokovic P31 champion 32 Monday, April 6, 2015 hats off RonalDo Cristiano Ronaldo hits five in nine-goal Real Madrid rout Madrid ristiano Ronaldo’s first ever five goal haul in the one match saw Real Madrid move to within a point of Barcelona at the top of La Liga with a stunning 9-1 thrashing of Granada yesterday. Gareth Bale continued his fine form after bagging a brace for Wales last weekend by opening the scoring after 25 minutes. Ronaldo then took over as he scored three times in eight minutes just after the half hour mark. Karim Benzema struck twice either side of Ronaldo’s fourth as Real added three more in a fourminute spell just after the break. Robert Ibanez grabbed a consolation for the visitors, but Diego Mainz’s own goal made it 8-1 before Ronaldo rounded off the scoring with a towering header. Barca can restore their four-point lead when they visit Celta Vigo later on Sunday. Ronaldo’s quintuple takes him four clear of Lionel Messi in the race to be La Liga’s top goalscorer. C Madrid had only won one of their last four La Liga games before the international break, but Ancelotti was able to welcome back James Rodriguez for the first time in two months after recovering from a foot injury. Chances soon began to flow for Madrid and Bale was first to capitalise when he latched onto Toni Kroos’s through ball to round Oier Olazabal and slot home from a narrow angle. Rodriguez then sealed his comeback with a lovely assist with the outside of his left foot to allow Ronaldo to curl home his first of the afternoon. The Portuguese soon made it 3-0 by lashing home from close range after Olazabal had spilled a cross and he sealed an eightminute hat-trick with some more help from the Granada ‘keeper as he couldn’t keep out the World Player of the Year’s drive from 20 yards. Granada offered embarrassingly little resistance after the break as Benzema was given plenty of time to control a corner from the left and fire home to make it 5-0.
