At the Handweavers Studio we recognise that a loom is a special purchase, and we like you to be
able to try a loom before you buy it. We regularly use all the models of table loom that we sell in
our classes and workshops, so if you visit us, you can roadtest them before buying.
We don’t have space to keep a range of floor looms on display but we generally have the smallest
Louet floor loom, the David, and also the smallest dobby loom, the Magic, available for you to try
in the display area, and we can help you make an informed decision on which of the larger Louets
is right for you, often by arranging to put you in touch with other weavers using them.

We believe that the way a loom is set up is crucial to the quality and pleasure of weaving on it, so
unlike many suppliers we assemble our table looms before selling them to you. That means the
hassle of the flat pack is entirely ours, not yours, and you can get weaving right away.
Ashford table looms
The Ashford table looms are well designed and sturdily made, and represent good value for
money despte a less favourable exchange rate this year. The four shaft and eight shaft table looms
fold down for transport (or sliding under a bed), and it’s perfectly possible to travel with them to
workshops and classes. The sixteen shaft is quite a bit larger and doesn’t fold down, but it can still
be carried by one not-too-little person.
The levers have a nice smooth action, are well spaced for flipping two or three at a time and,
being on the front, you can use them with either or both hands. All the looms come with a 10 dpi
reed.

Ashford “Katie” folding loom
2nd back beams
The ultra-portable 8-shaft “Katie”
loom is the most easily folded of all
the folding table looms. And because
of the way it folds, the warp always
stays horizontal even when you’re
carrying the loom around, so it
doesn’t slide from side to side and fall
off the sticks or separating paper. It’s
perfect if you’re travelling to
workshops and classes (it comes with
its own bag), and is good as a
general sampling loom as well, with
the same easy lever action as the
standard table looms.

to one treadle, and you cannot get an
additional set of 4 treadles because you
wouldn’t have enough feet to work them! There

Louët floor looms
Louet’s table looms have for years been
among the most popular on the market for
their smooth action, excellent finish, and
relative portability. They have recently been
redesigned to increase even further their
portability - the smaller one (40 cm) even has
a carrying handle attached to one side bar.
The distinctive overslung beater, easy-to-use
front-mounted levers and general weaving
enjoyment are much liked. These are excellent
looms for all-purpose weaving, with the benefit
that you can take them to workshops or hide
them away when you’re not using them. They
come supplied with a 10 dpi reed and a builtin 5 dpi/2 dpcm raddle.
We are great fans of the larger Louet looms - they have all been very thoughtfully and innovatively designed from the technical point of view,
as well as being beautifully made and attractive items of furniture. So although they are all relatively short from front to back, the sprung
beams on the Spring and Delta give a shed every bit as good as a Swedish-style floor loom more than twice the depth with very little stress on
the warp. And the parallel countermarche system on the Spring and Delta (and an equivalent system on the Octado and Megado dobby
looms) means there is very little stress on your knees either!
These looms are made and shipped to order by Louet, so there can be a lead time of up to twelve weeks. There are a number of options and
accessories for each of them, from second back beams to sectional warping, fly shuttles and benches. Contact us to discuss what you might

David
If you want a floor loom with a small footprint, we would recommend the Louet David. It’s quite unusual in that it has a
sinking shed - the warp threads are pulled down instead of being pulled up - and parallel lams, which means that equal,
surprisingly light, pressure is needed to depress any of the treadles. The action of the treadles is very smooth and it’s an
extremely pleasant loom to weave on. It has eight shafts and ten treadles, allowing you to have a
full twill tie-up whilst keeping two treadles tied for plain weave. There is a built-in raddle and a
shelf incorporated into the castle, and the loom has recently been reconfigured slightly so that it
now boasts a sliding beater with a shuttle race. It’s not strictly a folding loom, but the back beam
can be loosened and pulled in to reduce the depth a little while not in use. Somewhat surprisingly,
the David will fit in the back of a medium-sized hatchback!

Although it looks at first glance quite similar to the David, the Spring is
quite different mechanically. It’s a countermarche loom, which means
that the shed is created by raising some shafts and lowering the others,
so that there is always equal tension on all the warp threads, and the
threads are stretched less to create a shed of the same size. The front
beam swings in slightly when the shed is opened, reducing the tension
on the warp threads even more, so it’s light to treadle and excellent for
weaving inelastic threads such as linen or steel blends.

The next loom up in the range from the Spring is
the Delta. It’s functionally very similar, but has a
bigger warp beam (a definite advantage with long
warps or sectional warping), rear-hinged treadles,
and instead of the front beam swinging in, it’s the
back beam that relaxes to ease the tension when
the shed is opened.

Magic
With dobby looms, the shafts selected for each successive pick are raised automatically either by
mechanical or electronic means, and all the Louet dobby looms come in both mechanical and
electronic versions.
With a mechanical dobby, for each pick in your weaving sequence you peg the pattern of shafts to
be raised in a lag; the lags together form a dobby chain which is moved on by pressing a lever or
a treadle.
An electronic dobby is linked to a computer (either PC or Mac). You generally advance to the next
pick by pressing a treadle. The main handweaving software packages (Fiberworks, PixeLoom,
WeavePoint etc) all have drivers for the Louet electronic looms.
These looms are also made and shipped to order and may have a lead time of up to twelve weeks.
As with the floor looms, there are many options and accessories available for each model, so get
in touch to discuss exactly what you need and we can price the whole package for you including
shipping.
Although it looks like a floor loom when it’s mounted on its stand, it’s better to think of the
Magic as essentially a table loom that happens to have a stand and treadle if you choose
to use them - some weavers always tuse the handle that fits into the top of the dobby
mechanism because the treadling can be very heavy. In the
mechanical version, you have to turn a knob to advance to the
next pick and then open the shed with the lever or the treadle. In
the electronic version the lever or treadle does both actions.
When mounted on its stand, the Magic has a treadle which, in the
electronic version, advances to the next pick and opens the shed;
in the mechanical version, it opens the
shed but you have to turn a knob to
advance to the next pick. Both versions
can be dismounted from the stand and
used as table dobby looms, if you want to
take them to a workshop, for example.

Octodo
While the Magic Dobby has a lot in common
with a table loom, the eight-shaft Octado has
more in common with the Louet floor looms.
When the shed is opened, the back beam lifts
up, releasing tension and creating in effect a
countermarche shed. The tensioning system on
the sprung breast beam allows you to set the
tension consistently each time you wind on.
Treadling is very light, and you can use either
or both feet - an important ergonomic
advantage.

The top of the Louet range, the Megado
has the same tensioning system as the
Octado, the same countermarche effect
through the moving back beam, and the
same easy treadling with either foot - it
just has twice or four
times as many shafts,
depending on your

Louët dobby looms

Ashford “Knitters” loom
Rigid heddle looms are the most straightforward
of all looms to use, with just one key
component (the “rigid heddle”) used both to
raise alternate wqrp threads and to beat the
weft threads into place. They are excellent if
your interests lie primarily with colour and
texture, although you can also create more
complex patterns and use finer threads if you
add a second heddle. You can also use them
for weaving wall hangings and for tapestry
weaving.
There are various models of Ashford rigid
heddle, from the small “SampleIt” through the
ultra portable folding “Knitters” looms to the
tried and tested standard rigid heddle loom.
All can be used flat on a table or resting on
your knees, or if you prefer you can get a stand
for any of them except the SampleIt.
Designed to be easily portable and to allow you
to get weaving quickly, the knitters looms fold in
the middle with your weaving still in place and
slip into a bag. Like the standard rigid heddle
loom, it can be fitted with a second heddle if
you want to weave finer or create more
complex patterns.
If you know you will often be carrying the loom
around you may want to choose the option that
includes a custom bag.

The baby of the Ashsford rigid heddle looms,
the SampleIt has a weaving width of 20cm (8”),
weighs only a fraction over a kilo, and is ideal

Tapestry weaving can be done on a simple frame or on a special upright loom. You can also use
a rigid heddle loom although this doesn’t allow you to see as much of your work at one time.

These sturdy but portable metal looms are designed for tapestry weaving but also used for
beading. They can cope with a high warp tension without a hint of bowing; they have fold-out
legs so you can stand them on a table if you want (although you can use them on your lap if
you prefer), and they have a shedding device. Warp coils make it easy to space your warp
accurately and evenly; coils for 8, 12, 14 and 18 ends per inch are included with each loom.

Bluster Bay’s avowed aim is to produce “supremely beautiful, seriously functional textiles tools”,
and their shuttles are certainly a perfect marriage of form and function. Crafted from exotic woods,
they are finished with Danish oil and then waxed and polished to a satiny sheen, so that they are
not only sensuous but also glide effortlessly through the shed.
We try to keep a a wide selection of woods available so get in touch with us if you want something
particular, either in terms of appearance or weight.

The Bluster Bay boat shuttles have a very low
profile compared with standard shuttles, making
them ideal for table looms with a shallower
shed.Because of the low profile, you need to use
paper quills, not bobbins.
These are very slim from back to front and also
have an extemely low profile, making them
perfect for squeezing that last little bit of
weaving out of the end of a warp, or for
techniques such as pick-up, damask or
opphämta. To kep the profile as low as
possible, they are only available with open
bottoms and have to be used with quills not
bobbins.

end-feed shuttles
End-feed shuttles are so called because the yarn
feeds from the end of a static pirn instead of
feeding from the side of a spinning bobbin or
quill. They deliver the weft yarn at a constant
tension without the weaver having to
manipulate each pick.
Bluster Bay offer two tensioning systems. The
hook tensioning system is simple and elegant a series of hooks which the yarn can be zigzagged around until the perfect tension is
reached. We stock these shuttles with an open
bottom which keeps the weight right down, so if
you have any carpal tunnel or RSS problems,
these are the ones to go for.
There is also the Honex tensioning system which
can deliver more precise weft tension and may
be preferable for ultra-fine, stretch or flyaway
yarns. These are available with both closed and
open bottoms, and are supplied with an Allen
key to adjust the tensioning.
The larger shuttles have a profile of 3.5cm
(1.4”); the 11” shuttle has a lower profile of
2.5cm (1.1”) and the 11½” is 3cm (1¼”).

combines a cone stand, spool rack and
doubling stand. It also has provision for ball,
cone and bobbin winders to be clamped to the
top, and an upstand to enable a swift to be
mounted horizontally (the preferred way) so that
all but the most
delicate yarns can
be wound directly
onto a winder at
the other end. (For
a few fine yarns
the angle may be
too oblique.)
