Sunday Bulletin - Manhattan Presbyterian Church

Manhattan
Presbyterian
Church
The Lord’s Day, April 12th, 2015
To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for
comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a
Savior; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and
thirst after righteousness; and to all who will come, this church opens wide her
doors and offers welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Welcome
We are so excited you can be here today to join in worshipping the God
of the universe with Manhattan Presbyterian Church. We love God and
are thrilled to see God build this local church body for the furthering of
His Kingdom in Manhattan, Kansas. We know visiting a church can lead
to a lot of questions and we’d love to help you find answers so please
ask. Again, we’re really glad you’re here.
Sunday Information
Nursery
Nursery is provided on the north side of the building (to the right from the
entryway) for children 4 and under, but they are also always welcome in the
service.
Restrooms
Restrooms are located in the entrance hallway.
Children’s Church/Worship Training
In the future we plan to have a time for preparing older children for participating
in the Sunday worship service. This will allow children to worship with their
families before being dismissed prior to the sermon to learn more about how
and why we worship God. Currently they remain the whole service or go to the
nursery.
Why Robes?
Brian & Travis wear robes during the service which might seem odd. This has
been a tradition of the church for many centuries. It helps connect us to our past
heritage.
The robe also helps emphasize the office of the pastor and de-emphasize the
personality of the men in the pulpit. It serves to take notice away from what
Brian & Travis are wearing that particular Sunday, thus focusing us away from
their terrible fashion senses and onto Christ himself. At first it may seem odd,
but after a few services you won’t notice it, which is partly the point.

GOD CALLS US
Reflection
"May we be stimulated by God’s Word to do His work more joyfully.”
- Bob Reymond
“When the heart is full of joy, it always allows its joy to escape. It is like
the fountain in the marketplace; whenever it is full it runs away in
streams, and so soon as it ceases to overflow, you may be quite sure
that it has ceased to be full. The only full heart is the overflowing heart.”

we respond to
His invitation.
From Psalm 108:1-5
Pastor: My heart is steadfast, O God! I will sing and make melody
with all my being!
People: I will give thanks to you, O LORD, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to you among the nations.
Pastor: For your steadfast love is great above the heavens;
People: Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
Pastor: Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
People: Let your glory be over all the earth!

HYMN OF ADORATION
How Great Thou Art
O Lord my God; When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars; I hear the rolling thunder
Thy pow'r thru’out; The universe displayed
Then sings my soul
My Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art (2x)
Standing
Psalm 92:5
“How great are
your works, O
Lord! Your
thoughts are
very deep!”
When through the woods; And forest glades I wander
And hear the birds; Sing sweetly in the trees
When I look down; From lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook; And feel the gentle breeze
Chorus
And when I think; That God His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die; I scarce can take it in
That on the cross; My burden gladly bearing
He bled and died; To take away my sin
Chorus
When Christ shall come; With shout of acclamation
And take me home; What joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow; In humble adoration
And there proclaim; My God how great Thou art

CONFESSION OF SIN
Sitting
We Confess Our Sin
Because sin is
so pervasive in
both our
corporate and
individual lives,
Christians are
called to come
before our
holy God with
honesty and
transparency,
confessing our
brokenness
and asking for
both
forgiveness
and healing
through Jesus
Christ.
Our Savior Jesus,
even while we praise you as Divine Sovereign
whose authority is above all earthly power,
we have failed to give you authority
over even the smallest matters of our lives.
We confess our arrogant,
self-centered sense of power
over matters in our lives,
and in your world.
We desperately cling to our own power,
failing to yield to your divine authority,
wisdom, guidance, and love as revealed in Your Word.
Forgive us, we pray,
for the harm we have done to others
and to ourselves.
In your mercy, forgive us Lord.
Amen.
See 1 John 1:9
for more on
confession.
Silent Confession of Sin
The Words of
Assurance
declare the
good news
that all those
who hope in
Jesus alone to
make them
right with God
are forgiven,
not based on
their own
merits, but
based on
God’s promise
of salvation in
Christ.

Out of my wanting and into Thy wealth,
Out of my sin and into Thyself,
Jesus, I come to Thee.
Out of my shameful failure and loss,
Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come.
Into the glorious gain of Thy cross,
Jesus, I come to Thee.
Out of earths sorrows into Thy balm,
Out of lifes storms and into Thy calm,
Out of distress into jubilant psalm,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

WORSHIP THROUGH GIVING
We Give Our Tithes and Offerings
The offering is a way for Christians to support the church’s
mission and ministry. Christians give back to God a portion of
all the resources which God has given. We give as an act of
faith and gratitude in response to God’s grace to us. Sitting
We include
Tithes and
Offering in the
service because
we view it as a
means of
participating in
worship.
If you are guest
today please
feel no
obligation to
give.
Words for Reflection
Giver of all good things,
let your grace flow through us;
a generous stream,
unstoppable, refreshing, abundant.
We release these gifts into your river of love,
flowing out to all the world.
Amen.

PREACHING OF GOD’S WORD
From the
English
Standard
Version
(London:
Crossway,
2010)
As the Bible is
the primary
means by
which God
speaks to and
edifies His
people, we
read and listen
to the
Scriptures
together in
worship. In
ancient Israel
and the early
church,
services of
worship were
organized for
the public
reading of
Scripture - a
practice vital to
building up the
community of
faith.
Counter Intuitive Wisdom: Ecclesiastes 8
Pastor Brian Hough
Wisdom is important and here is some wisdom
considering the authorities are often unjust…
I.
Obey the authorities (8:1-9)
II.
Fear God not man (8:10-13)
III.
Live with joy even when life is unjust (8:14-15)
IV.
Wisdom Has Limits (8:16-17)
A sermon is not
just a teaching
for living; it is
mainly a time
when Christ
encounters His
people through
His Word.
Isaiah 40:8
“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God
will stand forever.”
13
HYMN OF RESPONSE
O Church Arise
O church, arise and put your armor on;
Hear the call of Christ our captain;
For now the weak can say that they are strong
In the strength that God has given.
With shield of faith and belt of truth
We'll stand against the devil's lies;
An army bold whose battle cry is "Love!"
Reaching out to those in darkness.
Standing
Matthew 16:18
“And I tell you,
you are Peter,
and on this rock
I will build my
church, and the
gates of hell
shall not prevail
against it.”
Our call to war, to love the captive soul,
But to rage against the captor;
And with the sword that makes the wounded whole
We will fight with faith and valor.
When faced with trials on every side,
We know the outcome is secure,
And Christ will have the prize for which He died—
An inheritance of nations.
Come, see the cross where love and mercy meet,
As the Son of God is stricken;
Then see His foes lie crushed beneath His feet,
For the Conqueror has risen!
And as the stone is rolled away,
And Christ emerges from the grave,
This victory march continues till the day
Every eye and heart shall see Him.
So Spirit, come, put strength in every stride,
Give grace for every hurdle,
That we may run with faith to win the prize
Of a servant good and faithful.
As saints of old still line the way,
Retelling triumphs of His grace,
We hear their calls and hunger for the day
When, with Christ, we stand in glory.

GOD COMMUNES WITH US
The Lord’s Supper
Communion is a sign and seal for those who believe in Jesus Christ alone for
the forgiveness of sin. It's not for good people. It's for you if you believe and
embrace that you are worse and more messed up than you ever dare to admit;
and yet you are more loved and accepted by our Savior than you had ever
dared to hope - this is because of the life, the death and the resurrection of
Jesus for you. You will be invited to come forward. We serve wine, but also offer grape juice
for those who prefer for reasons of personal conviction. Children are welcome to come with their parents. Each child should talk with
the elders about his or her belief in Christ before taking the Lord's Supper.
Please contact us to do that at a future date. If you are not taking the Lord's Supper with use today, we don't want this to be
an awkward time. You can come forward and an elder will pray with you or you
may stay seated and pray one of the prayers provided on the next page. We're
glad you're here today. Words of Institution
Pastor: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:
People: Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
Pastor: Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us.
People: Therefore, let us keep the feast.
Pastor: The gifts of God are for the people of God. Come eat and drink with
thanksgiving.

GOD COMMUNES WITH US
The prayers below are provided as guides for your
silent, individual prayer during the Lord’s Supper
PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH
Lord Jesus, you claim to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Grant that I might
be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing
so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the
reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent and
convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen.
PRAYER OF FAITH
Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared
admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope.
I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to
offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the
dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen.
PRAYER OF COMMITMENT
Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in a life of committed discipleship
in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your
people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.
