President’s Message
Hi Everyone,
Well, it’s time for graduations, weddings and plans for the summer. Santa Rosa Republican Women
are also making plans. Although we are dark during July and August, that does not mean that we are not doing anything club wise.
We will be holding a new member orientation meeting on Saturday, July 14th at Rosie Parks’ house. All are
invited and we especially want to welcome new and prospective members. There will be a map and directions in the
June newsletter.
The summer will not be “dead” politically. The Presidential campaigns are going full force (15 months in
advance) and as time goes on I am sure that more and more of us will be picking a candidate. We are also going to
have to stay alert to all the mischief going on in Sacramento and Washington. Unbelievably bad laws are being
proposed and passed. We will get information from the CFRW Advocate and from legislative alerts that will be going
out. Let your legislators and executives know that you are paying attention and are keeping track of what they are
doing.

Reprint Article from May Monthly Newsletter
I’m sure that you know by now that you cannot believe
everything you read in the paper or hear on the air. Every
story must be checked and researched in depth to get the
truth.
This is the case with the whole stem cell issue. There
are all kinds of half statements and just plain falsehoods that
wander through the media.
Some definitions: –
•
Stem cells are a type of primitive cell, the parent cells,
that is, the cells from which the body makes other cells.
•
Embryonic Stem Cells (ESC’s) - Scientists have found
ways of developing stem cells derived from embryos
into most types of human cells. At this point ESC’s are
used in no treatments, cures or human clinical trials.
•
Adult Stem Cells (ASC’s) – These are stem cells that
are obtained from sources other than embryos. Adult
stem cells from bone marrow were first identified and
used in 1960. They have now been found in skin,
brains, spinal cords, dental pulp, muscles, blood vessels,
corneas, retinas, livers, hair follicles and umbilical cords.
Fat contains stem cells.
There is no “ban” on human embryonic stem cell research in the United States.
ESC research goes on at labs all over the country. There
is no legal barrier to this research. Since 2001, the federal
government has funded ESC research up to $130M. The
National Institute of Health funds stem cell research. California voted in 2004 to fund ESC research for $3B over 10
years.
Therapies derived from ESC are a long way off.
There are currently no controlled human clinical trials
going on for ESC-derived therapies. Scientists who have
been working with ESCs for a long time are stating that it
will be a long time, if ever that transplantation therapies will
work. The obstacles to ESC success are significant. ES
cells require the permanent use of dangerous immunosuppressive drugs and they have a
propensity to form into
teratomas, which means “monster tumor.”
However, there are about 1200+ clinical trials going on
for human adult stem cells (ASC’s). Most treatments derived
from ASC’s so far apply to blood-related diseases. A wider
list of diseases will likely benefit from ASC’s in a few years.
Non-embryonic stem-cell therapies have been used to treat
over 70 diseases in human beings.
There are other motives behind ESC research besides a
search for cures.
Because of the problems noted above with ESCs, clinical
trials cannot be run. Many scientists admit that their prime
interest in this research is not in hope for direct cell transplant therapies but in the desire to enhance basic scientific
knowledge of cell signaling, tissue growth and early human
development.
We also cannot ignore the almighty dollar. Scientists and
research centers definitely welcome the infusion of tax
money for ESC research because ESC is a highly speculative
field that attracts little private investment.
I have not discussed the ethical arguments pro and con
regarding ESC research. That is another issue entirely.

Did you know: The original Pledge of Allegiance was written by Francis Bellamy. It first appeared
in a children's magazine in1892. He wrote it to honor the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage to
America. The following month children first recited the pledge in public schools in celebration of
Columbus Day. Francis Scott Key observed the British bombing of Fort McHenry in the War of
1812 from a boat in Baltimore Harbor. During the night he saw glimpses of the American flag
through the smoke and flares of light. The next morning he was so happy to see the flag still flying
that he began to write the poem. Later the poem was put to music and became America's national
anthem. The flag that inspired 'The Star Spangled Banner' had been made by Mary Pickersgill and
her daughter, Caroline. It measured thirty feet by
forty-two feet. That restored flag is on display today
at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

In June, the Americanism Committee boxed and shipped 19 boxes to Afghanistan and Iraq. We know the temperature there now is above 120 degrees and life is miserable. Please stop and say a little prayer for our troops as you
go about your daily activities. They need our love and support now more than ever. Many of you attended the
fourth annual Support the Troops Rally on June 23 in Santa Rosa. You heard a special e-mail from LTC Steve
Countouriotis as read by his wife Debbie. As you know, Steve has been instrumental in helping to send our boxes on
to the enlisted soldiers in Kandahar. Your presence at the rally that day was felt by loved ones near and far. SRRWF
wants to thank each and every one of you for coming out on that very special day and for letting our troops know
how much we support them.
The Americanism Committee will be boxing and shipping again in the latter part of
the summer. Your generous donations at our luncheons have managed to cover our mailing expenses over the past six
months. We will be passing our donation box around once again at the next membership luncheon. Keep up the good

Where We Stand - Some Statistics
During the first portion of the 2007-2008 Legislative session, of the some nearly four thousand bills and resolutions introduced, we have
tracked four hundred three pieces of legislation. Of those, ninety passed out of the house

President, the Division Vice Presidents and the
Division Presidents) has reviewed sixty-seven
of those bills. With half the year gone, that
means two to three bills have been reviewed
each week since the Legislature began this
2007-08 Session.
As you can well imagine,
the dedicated CFRW Legislative Analysts volunteer a great deal of time so that our membership can continue to be well informed. We
thank them for what they do.
Are they worth it?
The Sacramento Bee reported that the Governor, legislators, and most constitutional officers were granted a 2.75% raise last Monday.
Exceptions were the attorney general and superintendent of public instruction -- they got
5%. The salary increases were approved 6-0
by an independent citizen panel created by
voter approval of Prop 112 in 1990. The higher
salaries take effect on December 3rd.
Here's what the bottom line is: Legislators
will be paid $116,208 annually, plus $162 (tax
free?) per diem when the legislature is in session. The Assembly Speaker and Senate President Pro Tem will be paid $133,639 each. The

of the Board of Equalization will get $159,134
each The Controller, Treasurer and Insurance
Commissioner will get $169,743 each. The
Attorney General and Superintendent of Public
Instruction will receive $184,301, and the Governor's salary is set at $212,179 although Gov.

How do we do this? One race at a time; find a race in your
community; recruit the right candidate, one who is elect able.
We need to get Republicans to the polls and more important

There are good Republican Candidates within our membership. It is time to step up and be that Good Republican
Candidate. We need more women to be on City Councils, as
Mayors, on School Boards, who better to decide where the
state school budget is spent than by those women who set the
values in the home, volunteer at the schools and read to the
children every night. We need more women in local offices so
they can move up to state and national office. Be that woman.

Open borders? Mass deportations?
How about some common sense instead?

Why do people want to come here? Same reasons as a
hundred years ago. For a job. For opportunity. To rise. To be in a
place where one generation you can be a bathroom attendant at a
Brooklyn store and the next your boy can be the star of “Ted
Mack’s Amateur Hour,” with everyone in the neighborhood
listening on the radio, or, today, “American Idol,” with everyone
watching and a million-dollar contract in the wings. To be in a
place of weird magic where the lightning strikes. Boom: You got
the job in the restaurant. Crack: Now you’re the manager. Boom:
You’ve got a mortgage, you have a home.
“Never confuse movement with action,” said Ernest
Hemingway. But America gives you both. What an awake place.
And what a tortured and self-torturing one. Your own family will
be embarrassed by you if you don’t rise, if you fall, if you fail.
And the country itself is never perfect enough for its countrymen;
we’re on a constant Puritan self-healing mission, a constant
search-and destroy-mission for our nation’s blemishes—racism,
sexism, ethnocentrism, out damn spots.
I asked myself a question this week and realized the answer is
“Only one.” The question is: Have I ever known an immigrant to
America who’s lazy? I have lived on the East Coast all my life,
mostly in New York, and immigrants both legal and illegal have
been and are part of my daily life, from my childhood when they
surrounded me to an adulthood in which they, well, surround me.
And the only lazy one I knew was a young woman, 20, European,
not mature enough to be fully herself, who actually wanted to be
a good worker but found nightlife too alluring and hangovers too
debilitating.
But she was the only one. And I think she went home.
Everyone else who comes here works hard, grindingly hard,
and I admire them. But it’s more than that, I love them and I’m
rooting for them. When I see them in church (it is Filipino
women who taught me the right posture for prayer; Central
Americans helped teach me the Bible) I want to kiss their hands. I
want to say, “Thank you.” They have enriched my life, and our
country’s.
Naturally I hope the new immigration bill fails. It is less a bill
than a big dirty ball of mischief, malfeasance and mendacity,
with a touch of class malice, and it’s being pushed by a White
House that is at once cynical and inept. The bill’s Capitol Hill
supporters have a great vain popinjay’s pride in their own higher
compassion. They are inclusive and you’re not, you, you guntotin’truckdriver’s-hat-wearin’yahoo. It’s all so complex, and
you’d understand this if you weren’t sort of dumb.
So what should we do? We should stop, slow down and
absorb. We should sit and settle. We should do what you do
after eating an eight-course meal. We should digest what we’ve
eaten.
We should close our borders. We should do whatever it
takes to close them tight and solid. Will that take the Army?
Then send the Army. Does it mean building a wall? Then build
a wall, but the wall must have doors, which can be opened a
little or a lot down the road once we know where we are. Should
all legal immigration stop? No. We should make a list of what
our nation needs, such as engineers and nurses, and then admit a
lot of engineers and nurses. We should take in what we need to
survive and flourish.
As we end illegal immigration, we should set ourselves to
the Americanization of the immigrants we have. They haven’t
only joined a place of riches, it’s a place of meaning. We must
teach them what it is they’ve joined and why it is good and what
is expected of them and what is owed. We stopped Americanizing ourselves 40 years ago. We’ve got to start telling the story of
our country again.
As to the eight or 10 or 12 or 14 million illegals who are
here—how interesting that our government doesn’t know the
number—we should do nothing dramatic or fraught or unlike us.
We should debate what to do, at length. Debate isn’t bad.
There’s a lot to say. We can all join in. We should do nothing
extreme, only things that are commonsensical.
Here is the truth: America has never deported millions of
people, and America will never deport millions of people. It’s
not what we do. It’s not who we are. It’s not who we want to be.
The American people would never accept evening news pictures
of sobbing immigrants being torn from their homes and put on a
bus. We wouldn’t accept it because we have hearts, and as much
as we try to see history in the abstract, we know history comes
down to the particular, to the sobbing child in the bus. We don’t
round up and remove. Nor should we, tomorrow, on one of our
whims, grant full legal status and a Cadillac car. We take it a
day at a time. We wait and see what’s happening. We do the
small discrete things a nation can do to make the overall
situation better. For instance: “You commit a violent crime?
You are so out of here.” And, “Here, let me help you learn
English.”
Let’s take time and find out if the immigrants who are here
see their wages click up and new benefits kick in as the endless
pool stops expanding. It would be good to see them gain. Let’s
find out if it’s true that Americans won’t stoop to any of the jobs
illegals do. I don’t think it is. Years ago I worked in a florist
shop removing the thorns from roses. It was painful work and I
was happy to do it, and I am very American. I was a badly paid
waitress in the Holiday Inn on Route 3 in New Jersey.
The young will do a great deal, and not only the young. The
dislike for Americans evinced by the Americans-won’t-do-hardwork crowd is, simply, astonishing, and shameful. It says more
about the soft and ignorant lives they lived in Kennebunkport
and Greenwich than it does about the American people.
But it’s not so complex. The past quarter-century an unprecedented wave of illegal immigrants has crossed our borders. The
flood is so great that no one—no one—can see or fully imagine
all the many implications, all the country-changing facts of it. No

THE SKEPTICAL OBSERVER
I know that by now you have all heard
about the “drive by media” and how they do a
real number on Conservatives and Republicans. However, I’m not sure that everyone realizes why the “drive
by’s are so effective.”
There are a few basic facts about our brains that
may not be known to everyone. The brain has a conscious and subconscious. The conscious part is what we
actively control.
This is where we make moral and judgment decisions. The subconscious part of the brain acts like a computer. It receives information and makes absolutely no
judgments. The subconscious believes everything it takes
in. This is why it is so important to control what we listen
to, read and think about.
Liberals own the media (newsrooms and editorial desks) in the area of ideas. A prime example is the
constant negative talk about the President. Do we all
agree with the President? No. Have we ever agreed
100% with any President? No. But to listen to the media talk about the President you would think that he had
personally come and caused each citizen excruciating
pain. Unless a person is on their guard, the constant bad
news, whether it is about Iraq, the economy or the terrible President we have starts to become part of a belief
system. That is why a recent poll showed that 67% of
Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is
going in and 69% are unhappy with the performance of
the President. So therefore, 2/3 of the citizenry is just
unhappy and wants a change. Well, that’s all they hear.
They are sure things are bad even though 95.4%
of the population has a job and the conveniences we
have in our daily lives are the envy of the world.
Now, how does that relate to the “drive by
media”? We are bombarded daily with a certain kind of

want special benefits for the wealthy at the expense of
the poor.” How about the statement “government should
help with all the problems individuals can’t solve on
their own”? This is pervasive throughout talk shows and
with liberal pundits. Republicans are always accused of
believing that government exists to benefit the wealthy.
Democrats are now calling themselves Progressives and
pushing for a living wage and fair profits. Republicans,
on the other hand are depicted as wanting low wages and
super profits. Polls taken this year indicate that most
people think the economy is in bad shape. The fact is
that the economy is doing very well using just about
every known indicator. The liberal media constantly
refers to the Religious Right. What they really mean by
that term is anyone who disagrees with them.
