“Reconqueur
the world titles”
Thierry de Feydeau
Total Competition and Sponsoring Manager
W
e’re particularly happy to have extended
the technical cooperation and marketing
partnership between the Total Group and Renault in Formula 1 for a five-year period. For over thirty-five years
we have formulated and developed fuels and lubricants in perfect
symbiosis with Renault Sport F1.
Together we have taken up all the technical and rules challenges
posed by the blue riband category of motor racing. And we’ve achieved remarkable results with eleven constructors’ titles and ten for
drivers.
Last year we remained faithful to Infinti Red Bull Racing and we threw
ourselves into the new challenge posed by Formula 1: namely, energetic efficiency. The result was a thirty-five per cent reduction in fuel
consumption for the same level of performance. This racing philosophy mirrors the priorities of the car industry and the preoccupations
of motorists everywhere. Our products play a preponderant role in
these domains.
After a frustrating 2014 season our respective teams have redoubled
their efforts in very close collaboration to reconqueur the world titles.

2 HISTORY
T
otal has been in Formula 1 since 1968* and in 2013 the French company broke the
200-victory barrier. It has racked up 27 world titles including twenty-one in partnership
with Renault Sport F1.
This partnership introduced the turbocharged engine at the end of the 70s, went on to
dominate F1 in the 90s with its normally-aspirated V10s and it also marked the V8 era
winning 10 of the 16 titles awarded. The drivers/constructors’ doubles in 2005 and 2006
deserve a special mention as the French make was a stand-alone works outfit at the time
with the Renault F1 team. Over the last 25 years Total and Renault have won almost half
the titles in Formula 1.

3 “An unrivalled partnership”
“All the systems and peripherals have been
optimised. In particular, we’ve revised the
combustion chamber, the turbo and the batteries. In fact, the two power units share very few
parts. Following on from the work begun at the
end of last season, reliability is at the centre of
our preoccupations as now we have only four
engines per car for the whole championship. In
addition, a lot of work has been done on performance and we’ve improved the unit’s capacities
in terms of energy restitution.”

“The 2014 season was a difficult one and
despite the three victories we scored with
Red Bull Racing, we were down on performance compared to our rivals. An analysis of
the situation shows that the explanation wasn’t
linked to a problem of resources, but to our organisation. We were unable to make the most of
the means at our disposal so we’ve restructured
at Viry-Châtillon to optimise our procedures.
These efforts should bear fruit mid-season and
we’re sure that we’ve made a big step forward
both in terms of performance and reliability.
We’ve also made a lot of progress with our Energy F1-2015 power unit compared to last year.
Now, we just have to see where we stand compared to our rivals.”

“We’re particularly satisfied with the extension of our partnership for another five
seasons. Renault and Total have been involved
in Formula 1 together for more than thirty-five
years, and this unrivalled partnership has been
crowned with success in the different sets of
regulations. Our engineers and Total keep in
constant touch, and the fuels as well as the lubricants play a key role in our results. Last year
when faced with the challenge represented by
the drastic reduction in consumption, the Total
products with several developments brought
out during the season played a determining role
in the progress we made with Red Bull Racing.
This year we’re again counting on these products, which are an integral part of our technical
package.”

Points of reference
T
he Red Bull RB11s are motorised by the
Renault Energy F1-2015 power unit. It
combines a 1.6-litre direct injection turbocharged internal combustion V6 backed up
by two powerful energy recovery systems
(MGU-H and MGU-K), which make up the
ERS (Energy Recovery System). As the
fuel and the electric energy propel the cars
at the same time, double restrictions are
applied to the fuel: 100 kg maximum for the
race with the fuel flow limited to 100 kg/h.
In addition, this year the teams have only
four power units per car for 20 grand prix.
Between energy saving at the same levels
of performance and reliability, the Total
products now play an even more decisive
role, as over and above their main function
they indirectly open up possibilities in the
areas of aerodynamic efficiency and the
positioning of the cars’ centre of gravity.
Pressures can

system
Drawing closer
to the consumers
S
ince last year the aim is no longer to use
the engine’s maximum power output as
often as possible, but to obtain the maximum performance from a given amount of
fuel. “It’s exactly the same approach as that
of a driver who’s trying to cover the greatest
possible distance on a tankfull,” explains
Philippe Girard, the Total Group’s scientific
delegate. “Thus, Formula 1 draws closer to
the current preoccupations of consumers
and the car industry in the area of energetic efficiency: reduction of cubic capacity,
reduction in fuel consumption and emissions without sacrificing performance. At
Total the same researchers in the Solaize
research Centre formulate the products
for racing as well as those on sale to motorists. This cross-fertilisation of ideas is a
win-win concept. Formula 1 takes advantage of the ideas driving the products in our
commercial ranges, and the ideas and methodologies developed for F1 products are
beneficial to those on sale to the everyday
motorist.”
Fuels
T
he power of an engine depends on the
quality of its combustion. On a turbo engine optimising its efficiency also comes
from improving its driveability over a wide
range of revs and setups. While pump fuel
can be described as off the peg the one
used in Formula 1 is a bespoke product.
Total formulates it, and once it has been
given the green light by Renault Sport F1,
homologates it with the FIA, produces it
in large quantities and transports it to the
circuits. The V6 Renault is fed by an unleaded Super with a high octane rating
(anti-detonation and power gain), excellent
combustion stability (anti-knock) and a
high energy content. In 2014, different fuel
developments gave the Renault power unit
a significant power gain over the season
as a whole.
Lubricants
U
nlike the restrictions imposed on fuels
the technical regulations allow considerable latitude in the domain of lubricants.
The Total chemists have to take up a
double challenge: namely, to reinforce reliability while searching for performance.
The physical stresses sustained by the engine and the lubricants are enormous, in
particular on the pistons-rings-liners sets,
the engine bearings, the turbo bearings
which drive the electric generator at more
than 100 000 rpm, and the distribution
where certain moving parts are only separated by a few thousandths of a micron.
Total provides specific lubricants in terms
of viscosity, anti-wear properties and high
thermal stability.

5 “Efficiency improved by 4 to 5%”
Guillaume Biondi

“First of all, let’s have a look back at a
pretty exceptional 2014 season. Faced
the new regulations, we doubled the number
of references of homologated fuel to maximize the Renault Sport F1 power unit’s performance. For Infiniti Red Bull Racing this represented a gain of around 4 to 5 percent in
terms of overall efficiency. We’re projecting
the same pace of development in 2015 even
if we’re getting closer and closer to the full
potential of the ideal product.”

“The 2015 power unit has undergone
considerable evolution compared to
last year’s. Our exchanges have been crucial
concerning the combustion chamber as the
characteristics of the fuel have an enormous
influence on the quality of its combustion. It
has to burn quickly in a stable manner with a
lean mixture, prevent knock, which is a problem that turbocharged engines are prone
to, and have an excellent ratio between density and energy given the limitations on the
quantity taken on board and the fuel flow.
In addition, it must generate heat to ensure
the best possible exploitation of the dynamic
from the exhaust gases which, in turn, has to
make the best use of the electric capacities.”

We’re introducing a new oil for the
engine. Last year, we mainly ensured
mechanical reliability. It’s still a priority as
this season each car has only four engines
for the whole championship. But we’re also
looking for a real performance gain. While at
present we’re between the 2014 gains and
the possibilities in 2015 in terms of what’s
achievable technically speaking, we’re
already looking at the 2016 season according to the designs currently being studied
at Renault Sport F1.”

6 INFINITI RED BULL RACING
T
he Austrian team based in Milton Keynes in England
was founded in 2005, and since 2007 it has been racing in partnership with Renault Sport F1 and Total.
This three-handed collaboration based on a strategy of complete integration concerning the interactions
between the chassis, power unit, fuels, lubricants,
grease and fluids has helped Infiniti Red Bull Racing
to become one of the benchmarks in Formula 1.
The result has been a victorious run of four drivers/
constructors’ doubles between 2010 and 2013. Last
year, the team finished second in the constructors’
championship thanks to three victories scored by
Australian Daniel Ricciardo who was third in the
drivers’ ratings.
