Course Description
A study of anatomical, physiological and pathological terminology with emphasis on work
structures and definition of root words, suffixes, and prefixes from Greek and Latin. Additional
emphasis is placed on spelling and pronunciation. Primarily designed for individuals preparing for a
career in health care.

Course Competencies/Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of course requirements, student will:
1.
Define medical words by analyzing their Greek or Latin components.
2.
Combine prefixes, suffixes, and word roots to form medical terms.
3.
Correctly define, pronounce, and spell medical terms.
4.
Recognize meaning of commonly used medical abbreviations.
5.
Analyze Greek and Latin roots to define medical terms pertaining to the human body,
pathologies and treatments.
Assessment measure:
Competencies will be assessed through quizzes, tests and discussion board assignments.

Final grades will be an average of the evaluation percentages shown. Letter grades will be assigned
using the following scale:
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%

Class Policies/Procedures
Inclement Weather Class Policy/Procedure
This is an on-line class and coursework can contine regardless of class delays or cancellations. If
you have problems with your computer access due to inclement weather please let me know so we
can make adjustments as needed.
General Class Make-up/Late Assignment Class Policy/Procedure (including weather related
make-up plan)
You should complete one Lesson per week in this course. If you have personal issues and are
unable to do so then you need to contact your instructor to work out arrangements as soon as
possible. All assignments in the class are open throughout the terms except midterm and final
exams so you have the opportunity to make-up assignments and stay on track.
Withdrawal Class Policy/Procedure
A student may officially withdraw from any class up to and including the date of mid-term with a W
grade assigned to the student’s record. After midterm you must have instructor approval.
