ABOUT
VENUE
THE NATIONAL COALITION OF ABORIGINAL
AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER SOCIAL
WORKERS ASSOCIATION INC
DOUBLETREE BY HILTON HOTEL
ESPLANADE, DARWIN
The National Coalition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Social Workers Association Inc., (NCATSISWA) has been working
on the ground with individuals, families and communities for
ten years having incorporated in 2003 after undertaken national
consultations about whether there was a need and community
support for such an organisation. The overwhelming response was
in the affirmative and the NCATSISWA was formally incorporated.
The Association was born as a response to the need of Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander individuals and communities, who were
not receiving the assistance and support they needed from the
professional social work body in Australia (the AASW).
The NCATSISWA is comprised of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander social workers including people who attended the South
Australian Institute of Technology, Aboriginal Task Force, in the
1970’s and 1980’s who received an Associate Diploma or Certificate
in social work, or Community development and/or administration,
who then went on to successfully engage in grassroots social
work and community development that assisted in changing the
landscape of Australian politics, policies and practices. A number
of these graduates then went on to undertake further study as social
workers, lawyers, psychologists and educators. Others went straight
to work in the community as politicians and community developers
or activists, becoming leaders in their communities.

DARWIN
Situated on the edge of a harbour bigger than Sydney’s, Darwin is a
beautiful, fascinating tropical city. It is the homeland of the Larrakia
people and has become a melting pot of people and cultures that
prides itself in its unique and friendly laid-back lifestyle.
While a sophisticated, modern city in its own right, it is also one
steeped in history, one that has endured many hardships on its way
to establishing itself as the gateway to Asia. It is the home of NT
commerce and business and with its world-class natural and cultural
attractions it is also a thriving hub of activity in terms of tourism,
nightlife and retail.
The Association membership also includes representation of
traditional owners, community groups, family groups, Elders,
cross disciplinary leaders, allied groups and non-indigenous allies
(individuals and organisations). The membership provides extensive
networks that assist the Association to achieve our vision and
objectives. However, there are no paid positions in the Association,
and no government funding has been sought for the everyday
running of the Association as this independence aligns with the goal
of self-determination and self-funding, which is the ideology that
guides the Association. This does not prevent the Association from
sourcing and using Government and other funding sources for the
purposes of holding conferences and to meet other specific goals
that align with the objectives of the Association from time to time.
While the Association is independent it works closely with the
Australian Association of Social Work (AASW), and encourages
social workers who are members of the NCATSISWA to also join
the AASW, to ensure that they are insured as practitioners. We
also encourage our members to join other organisations such as
Indigenous Allied Health Australia (IAHA).
