Fauré’s Requiem,
a Meditation and
Tamsin Waley-Cohen
Beethoven’s concerto is modelled closely
on Mozart’s own C minor and this is a
wonderful opportunity to hear this work
performed by a supreme master. Haydn’s
Symphony no101, ‘The Clock‘ shows this
genial composer at the very height of his
powers.
For Peter’s final concert with OOTS this
season he has chosen a 20th century
masterpiece, Shostakovich’s second
concerto. Composed in 1957 for his son’s
19th birthday, it is an uncharacteristically
cheerful piece, with a tender and
subdued slow movement.
April ushers in spring and summer with an
all-American programme which includes
some less well-known gems alongside
justifiably popular stalwarts of the classical
repertoire - Barber’s sublime Adagio and
Copland’s bucolic Appalachian Spring.
Fauré’s Requiem is a perfect foil to
Dobrinka Tabakova’s glittering work for
chamber choir and orchestra Centuries of
Meditations. We are delighted to
welcome back Tamsin Waley-Cohen as
soloist in another work from Dobrinka,
High Line, composed as a companion to
The Lark Ascending.

We’re pleased to welcome back April
Fredrick as soloist in Dobrinka’s Sonnets to
Sundry Notes, a jaunty song-cycle that
complements Tchaikovsky’s delightful
Serenade. Kristina Arakelyan won the OOTS
Shakespeare 400 Composition Competition
and we’re proud to premiere her new work,
generously funded by the Boltini Trust
Stacy Garrop is an award-winning
American composer and Love’s Philosophy
is a luminous setting of poems by Shelley,
Coleridge, Keats and Byron. We welcome
back Raphael Wallfisch to premiere a
new version of the Ireland cello sonata
arranged for string orchestra and cello.
Our final concert sees two outstanding
soloists collaborating in the premiere of
a new work for violin and piano and
Albeniz’s Suite Española brings the season
to a glittering conclusion.

Dobrinka Tabakova
Resident Composer 2014-16
Following OOTS’ prestigious Composer-in-the-House award from the Royal Philharmonic Society and PRS for Music
Foundation, we are delighted to announce that the Sorel Organization, New York, has given substantial grant aid to
enable us to appoint the Grammy nominated Dobrinka Tabakova as OOTS’ Resident Composer 2014-16.
The Sorel Organization grant will support Dobrinka’s work as OOTS’ Resident Composer which will include several
commissions, including a major work for the Shakespeare 400 anniversary in 2016 and close involvement with OOTS’
Learning and Participation Programme which will see Dobrinka encouraging young composers of the next generation in
OOTS‘s ‘4 Shorts’ project. Dobrinka will also be giving pre-concert talks and introductions to her own music and that of
other major influences on her own work.
During her residency Orchestra of the Swan also plans a CD of Dobrinka’s work.
