Seniors in Sobriety
I’ve just come away from an amazing gathering of elder
alcoholics this past weekend. Elder or senior can mean
so many different things to different people. It can
mean long term service or long term sobriety, or long
lived, and in this group we had it all. This was the 9th
Annual Seniors in Sobriety International Conference
held each year to bring information, fellowship and fun
to the folks that attend. This year we were privileged to
have not only a number of states, including Hawaii,
represented, but also the countries of Japan, Ireland
and Canada.
The program was geared to the question of how do we
deal will our alcoholism while aging and how our aging
affects our recovery. The topics included Couples in
Recovery, We Are Not a Glum Lot, Dealing with Loss and
Restrictions, Love Sex and Social Security and the AA
member and Other Drugs. A couple of field trips, a
great banquet and excellent speakers rounded out the
conference.
Seniors in Sobriety started many years ago in New York
and was spearheaded by a husband and wife team from
Hawaii. They were able to see the need for Alcoholics
Anonymous to reach out to a group of elders in and out
of the rooms of AA. Their goal was to have AA available

when the senior of any age wanted to stop drinking.
They started meetings that were accessible and met
during the day for the folks that have trouble driving at
night. We now have a National list of Senior-friendly
meetings and a web site for access to these lists.

Some areas have established district level committees
outside of Public Information and Cooperation with the
Professional Community called Cooperation with the
Elder community. In some places Special needs has
taken the elder under its wing. Though not all seniors
are special needs, many enjoy very lively and active lives
and are not handicapped in any way.
We will have a conference in 2016 in San Diego at the
Bahia Resort Hotel, with meetings on a paddle boat.
This coming year, at the 80th International Convention,
we will have a Hospitality Suite. Please look for us if you
have a chance and want to learn more about seniors in
Sobriety.

Tradition Four
The first time I attended the Eau Claire Pacific Group
and heard all the “ooohing,” “aaahhing” and clapping I
knew they were doing it wrong. I thought AA is
supposed to be a bunch of old boring sticks in the mud,
these people are doing it wrong. But what happened in
that group to me, and to others, was we were shown
the enthusiasm and joy that can be a part of recovery
and it made the difference for a lot of us. At almost any
meeting I attend I always expect the opening statement
from this meeting to be read… I don’t have a copy and
couldn’t quote it here but it was a regular part of my life
every Thursday for about four years and it gets stuck in
your head you know.
On a recent trip to Winnipeg I stopped at a noon AA
meeting at their central office. It was a textbook AA
meeting, most of the chairs were filled with people of
every description and ethnicity and the coffee was
nasty. :-) I was recognized as someone who hadn’t been
there before almost immediately, which leads me to
believe they have a great number of regulars and that’s
a good sign at a meeting. Before the meeting began
discussions started about where I lived and went to
meetings and I heard where others were originally from
or where they got sober and such.
One gentleman with a thick Irish accent asked me what
prayer we use to start the meetings in Washington (this
Winnipeg group started with the Serenity Prayer). I told
him my regular meetings start with the AA Preamble
and close with both the Lord’s Prayer and the Serenity
Prayer. That seemed to get everyone’s attention in the
room as they found that odd. I think it’s easy to forget
that each group is autonomous when we don’t get
outside our regular groups and see that meetings are
run differently pretty much everywhere.
Tradition Four “Each group should be autonomous
except in matters affecting other groups or A.A. as a
whole.”
You never know what kind of traditions a meeting will
have when you go to it the first time. I’ve been to
meetings where people count out loud when “How It
Works” is read. The first time that happened I burst out
laughing, it was so foreign to me. I’ve seen other
meetings where every person in the room introduces
themselves by first name and sobriety date, others that
read the Twelve Steps and Traditions, some that read
the Responsibility Statement, some that read the
beginnings of one of the Chapters in the Big Book
followed by the 12 Steps (My old home group the
Northside Group in Eau Claire WI does that, freaked me
out the first few times, but I was new so everything
pretty much freaked me out the first few times.).
The Northside Group and some other meetings in Eau
Claire always read the Twelve Traditions (something I
almost never hear on the East Coast) and “The A.A.
Tradition” found at the beginning of Appendix I in the
back of the book (Page 563 in the Second Edition) and
when I’m out traveling and hear that at a meeting it’s
almost like I’ve come home.
A few years ago I was fortunate enough to go to a
meeting in Nashville, TN the “Back Room Group”, a
12×12 meeting. As I walked in I saw that most people
had brought their own 12x12s, pencils/pens and
highlighters. I knew immediately it was going to be a
good meeting and it really really was, those folks knew
AA. When I’ve brought along my own literature to
meetings on some occasions folks have gotten upset
during the meeting that I’m highlighting or writing
down – they think it’s the club’s book.
Each group can do its own thing and I’ve seen lots of
different things out there, but in the heart of the
meeting as long as we’re there to help other alcoholics
and how we carry the message doesn’t affect other
groups or AA as a whole – then it’s all good. But I’ll
always be partial to the meetings I went to in the
beginning that built the foundation of my recovery and
I’ll always do my best to help others build theirs.

Jonathan opened the meeting with Serenity Prayer at
7:01 pm.

Tradition and Concept Reading
He then covered the profit/loss statement for the
month. Jamez began by explaining that we have
$6,701.20 in store income, a decrease of 18.9%. He
finished by showing that we have $5,856.03 in net
income, a 2% increase over the same point last year.
Jonathan read the Mission Statement. Harold read the
2nd Tradition. Aiden read the 2nd Concept.
Diane made a motion to accept the report, Harold
seconded. Motion passed.

Robert announced that every Saturday morning we
have groups compile meeting lists. He explained how
meeting lists are made.

months minutes, and Aiden seconded. Motion passed.

Treasurer’s Report.
Jamez began by highlighting the prudent reserve
portion of the balance sheet. He pointed out that we
are significantly ahead of last year at this time
($44,569.15 compared to $24,561.60). He mentioned
that one of our goals is to “run the intergroup on
prudent reserve.” He then went over total fixed assets
($18,295.86) compared to last year at this time
($20,644.36). He finished the balance sheet by

Central Office Report.
Marie defined TAS and said that we currently need help
from 9:00 am to noon on Sundays (Harold volunteered
to fill this slot until 6:00 pm., as a backup for Aiden), and
this Sunday only from midnight to 6:00 am. Marie asked
that additional volunteers email their availability to
[email protected]. She said the central office needs
backup TAS volunteers Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays
from 9:00 am to noon, noon to 3:00 pm, and 3:00 to
6:00 pm.
10. SRI Committee Report.
Filing Cabinet: Pete rose and defined the purpose of the
Filing Cabinet. He outlined various items that are
contained in each issue, subscription prices, and the
types of articles that we are looking for and ways to

11. Event Committee Liaisons:
email submissions. He also said he is willing to help
people write articles and offered his email address or
phone after the meeting for anyone who might need
that type of help. He said they are working on the
March issue and that each issue corresponds to that
number step and tradition.
Anniversary: Robert said this committee met for the
first time last Wednesday at the central office. April 11
is the actual anniversary date. He said there are lots of
service positions open. He said Chris is the chair and he
gave out her number. They meet at the central office at
6:15 pm every Wednesday until the event.
PI/CPC: Robert spoke about the purpose of this group.
He said the purpose of this group is to inform other
entities who would benefit from having clear and
accurate information about alcoholism and also interact
with schools, libraries, treatment facilities, police, and
other intergroups here in the valley. He said the group
meets at the central office on the fourth Tuesday at
6pm.
SRI Roundup: Doug said they have already set some
dates to meet. He said he accidentally left his
information at home but will have the meeting dates
next month and other info next month. He emphatically
stated that it’s going to be a great event!
TAS: Covered by Marie during the central office portion
of the meeting.
12. Old Business: No old business.
Archives: Doug rose and said there is no need to meet
currently. He said he also has holiday speakers on the
SRI website, and the Sedona speaker for the Summer
Roundup.
SNAC: Neal is not here, and it was stated that no one
showed up at the last SNAC meeting. They meet the
fourth Saturday, but the location is in the process of
changing and we don’t yet know the new location.
There was a comment that SNAC is looking for info
regarding if anyone at AA groups where there is
someone who uses American Sign Language. Let SNAC
know if anyone can do this. Doug responded and said
Crossroads West has two signers.
Finance: Jonathan said not much is going on right now.
Unity: Pete and Diane defined the purpose of the unity
committee. Pete said the goal is to maximize the
representation of groups in the district in terms of their
having GSR’s and intergroup reps. But he said the initial,
basic goal is to verify that meetings listed in the meeting
lists booklet are actually happening. There was a short
discussion within the intergroup regarding what defines
a AA home group.
Christmas Alcothon: No report.
New Year’s Eve: No report.
13. New Business: We need a ninth member of the
steering committee. There is a three-year sobriety
requirement, and it is a two-year commitment.
Jonathan is asking if the intergroup knows anyone or if
they are willing to serve in this capacity. Jonathan said
there are fliers on the wall and he asked that people
check out the flier.
H&I: Kyle said last month he had already volunteered to
be our Valleywide H&I representative. He said he
attended that meeting and that H&I needs old
Grapevine issues to donate to hospitals, detoxes,
prisons, etc. He also mentioned the quantity of
literature that H&I bought to donate to various H&I
institutions.
Jamez said that there is a Traditions Breakfast at
Ascension Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 7th at
8:00 am. He said he and Lois L. will be presenting all 12
traditions.
Robert said WACYPAA event on Friday the 13th, will be
a silent auction. There will be 22 people that are
offering their services, and there is a scavenger hunt
coming in April.
14. Birthdays:
Literature Committee: No report.
Andrea, three years yesterday!
General Service: Doug rose and spoke on GSR training
session next Tuesday at Gloria Dei Church at 5:30 pm.
He said it will last 45 minutes to an hour.
