Steve Gretz is an American Baptist pastor in the Rochester/Genesee Region.
His wife Leslie is a graphic designer. Together, they write and perform folk
and gospel music.
A word from Leslie Lee & Steve Gretz
Leslie and I had the honor of singing at the 2011 American Baptist Churches
Biennial meetings in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We were asked to sing the
offertory, as a special collection was taken up for One Great Hour of
Sharing. We decided to write an original song specifically for the occasion.
The theme for the Biennial was “Celebrate” and we knew that the speaker
in that evening’s service was speaking on “Celebrating the Glory of God.”
We also thought of the words of Jesus in Matthew 25, saying that when we
all face a day of accounting for how we lived this life, the questions asked
will be of this nature: “When I was hungry, did you feed me? When I was
naked, did you clothe me?” Our guiding thought in writing the song was
that of all the ways we can choose to celebrate God’s glory — the way that
glorifies God the most, is by doing the kinds of things that are supported by
One Great Hour of Sharing. The needs of others, tragic and painful as they
are, present opportunities for us to share God’s love.
We thought first of relief efforts for those suffering from disasters —”the
wind and the rain of the hurricane.” Then we added the ministries of
refugee resettlement and development —”When the warlords came, and I
fled the flames” and “Did you help me find clean water, so my family could
thrive?”
We hope our song will be an inspiration and encouragement to give
generously to celebrate God’s glory by supporting One Great Hour of
Sharing.
