Sat 5/2 May Day 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk 8:00 AM Republic Parks and Recreation and CoxHealth Fitness
Centers are hosting their annual May Day 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk. The 5K starts at 8 a.m. and the 1 Mile Fun
Run/Walk starts at 8:05 a.m. The Fun Run/Walk is free and all participants will receive a ribbon when they finish. You
can pre-register for the 5K now through May 1 for $20 and children (14 and under) for $15. If you pre-register by
Friday, April 17 you are guaranteed a May Day 5K t-shirt. If you register the day of the race adults are $25 and
children (14 and under) are $20. The top three males and females in each age category receive prizes along with the

Sat 5/18 Kids Fishing Day Roaring River State Park, 6:30 AM to 8:15 PM The Missouri Department of Conservation and
The Department of Natural Resources proudly present Kids Fishing Day, May 16th, at Roaring River State Park. Young
anglers will have opportunities to catch fish and learn about fishing at Roaring River State Park’s Kids’ Fishing Day. At
Kids’ Fishing Day, children age 15 and under will be able to pick up free trout tags at the hatchery office any time on the
Friday before the event or all day on Saturday. A portion of the fishing area of the park will be reserved for youths age 15
and under. Volunteers will be on hand to help out. Children are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment. Parents
are welcome to help kids, but only one pole may be used between the helper and the child. Adults are not allowed to fish
by themselves. Free hotdogs, chips, and soda will be available 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Education is also part of Kids’
Fishing Day. Throughout the day, seminars will be held on fish cleaning, fish cooking, knife sharpening, knot tying, fly
tying and fly casting, how to fish Roaring River, stream biology and other subjects. A hatchery tour will be held to show
how trout are raised. A program on Missouri Snakes will be given using live specimens. Activities such as critter stamp
head bands will also be available. If kids attend three classes they will be entered into a drawing for prizes. The drawing
will be held at 5:00 p.m. Children must be present to win. Classes are also open to the whole family, but only children may
enter the drawings. Volunteers are needed to help with this event. Individuals wishing to volunteer do not need to be
experienced anglers. If you would like to help out with Kids Fishing Day, or for more information, please call the Roaring

Sat 5/30 Discover Nature- Fishing Lesson 1: Equipment, Casting and Proper Fish Handling Rutledge Wilson Farm Park,
Springfield 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM Lesson 1: Equipment, Casting and Proper Fish Handling combines instruction with
hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families basic fishing techniques and skills. Participants will learn how to
properly and safely cast a spincast fishing pole, parts of a fishing pole, how to fasten basic fishing tackle and how to
properly handle and release a fish. Participants are limited to anglers ages 7 – 15 and families with children. Fishing
equipment, instructors/coaches and bait/lures will be provided. Adults who do not wish to fish must accompany their
