As we look forward to a brand new year, I thought I would provide updates on existing projects and mention some new ones that are slated for 2015. Our transition from oil to gas is going very well. Our new HVAC equipment has been installed, and as we wait for UGI to run the line to the library we are temporarily running on propane. Another improvement that is planned for 2015 is new carpet and paint throughout the library. This welcome change, as well as the HVAC project, would not have been possible if it weren’t for our anonymous donor who saw the need for these capital improvements. We are extremely grateful for their generosity. Now that feedback has been received from our various library and community stakeholders, the Board of Trustees will be putting the finishing touches on the Library’s three-year strategic plan. We look forward to sharing that plan with you next month. We are excited to be participating in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, sponsored by the United Way of Lancaster County. This nationally recognized program is designed to help children get ready to learn by exposing them to a variety of books that are read to them by parents and caregivers. It’s a win-win program for everyone. Parents know they are contributing to their child’s school readiness, children are spending quality time with their parents enjoying and learning from the many books that a library can provide, and as a library this program meshes well with our “Skills for School” initiative sponsored by the Clarence Schock Foundation. This year's book selection is Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline, a historical fiction story that tells about abandoned children who were transported by train from the East Coast to the Midwest during the time between 1854 and 1929. Whether or not these children would be adopted by a kind family or experience a childhood of hard labor and servitude was up to chance, and this story moves between that past and modern day to uncover a story of resilience and an unlikely friendship. While this book will be talked about during the Book Discussions on February 24 at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., we will have a special program on Wednesday, February 11 at 6:00 p.m. "The Orphan Train Movement" program will be led by award-winning author Donna N. Aviles, also a member of the National Orphan Train Historical Society of America and a descendent of an Orphan Train survivor. Learn the history of this “social experiment” which transported an estimated 250,000 homeless children from the streets of New York City to farming communities of the Midwest in search of stable homes. To do some of these things, you will need to visit the web site, click on the "Catalog" link, go to "My Account Log In" in the upper right of the screen, and follow the directions by using your last name, your library card barcode number, and your PIN number (if you do not have the PIN you can create one). Once you are logged in, you can do all the things mentioned above, and you can add or edit your e-mail address. It will also show you if you have any outstanding fines. During the next few months, we will be changing to a new web site provider, and during this transition we would appreciate your patience. Public schools are closed on January 19 in recognition of Martin Luther King Day, but the library is going to be open as usual. To give kids something fun to do, Miss Jan has added two programs to the schedule this month, both designed for kids 7 and older. Readers' Theatre will begin at 10:00 a.m. and is a fun program that gives kids entertaining skits to practice and then perform for family. Readers' Theatre is a perfect place for kids who don't like speaking in public to practice in front of a small group, AND it's great for those kids who love the spotlight and the drama that comes with performing. Either way, it's a relaxed atmosphere where kids can enjoy themselves. The performance is at 11:30. Miss Jan will also hold an Art Class at 1:00 p.m. which will examine the works of a featured artist and use them as inspiration for students to create their own themed works of art. How does the program work? Record each book that you read together on the reading sheets provided by the library. When the first 100 books are finished, bring the completed sheets into the Library and get the sheets for the next 100; repeat the process until you reach the 1,000 book goal. Decorating the walls is artwork on consignment from local artist Susan Satterfield (art is for sale), and there is handmade bead and clay jewelry, perfect if you need a quick gift for friends or family. The shelves are filled with fiction and nonfiction books, music, movies and seasonal items. Also available is hand-sewn doll clothing that fits American Girl dolls or other 18" dolls. For the most part, everything is generously donated by the community, and all proceeds from sales in the store benefit the Library. The store is open Monday thru Thursday 10-12 & 6-8 and Saturday from 9-1. Hey, Staff - Watcha Readin'?
