Trip to the RSL
The Year 7 class went down the street to have a look
at the display at the RSL hall recently. In the middle of
the room there were replica bravery medals, including
World War II and Vietnam Victoria Crosses. It was
interesting for all of us. We looked at some of the
weapons and bombs that soldiers would have used
and read articles about South Australian soldiers that
won bravery medals for doing heroic things in the
war.
Mr Rob McFarlane showed us around. He went to the
Vietnam War himself and told us some interesting
stories about his experience.
These are some thoughts about our visit:
Briana & Ruby: Enjoyed the medals, personal stories,
posters and guns.
Jamie Smith & Jamie Magnay: liked the models of
the guns, flags and how Mr McFarlane narrated the
war that he was in and gave it personal experience.
Dayna & Tori: learned that heaps of people died for
our country and liked looking at the weapons,
learning about wars and all the interesting facts.
Matthew & Callum: Thoroughly enjoyed hearing
about all of Mr McFarlane’s personal missions, gun
stories and seeing the uniforms.
Oscar & Jaxon: enjoyed all of Rob’s missions.
Dylan: liked the gun replicas.
Dale: liked the display of the Victoria Crosses too.
STUDENT WELLBEING
Need to talk?
Has something happened online that makes
you feel uncomfortable, scared or sad?
Talking to friends and family can help. It can
also help to talk or to visit Kids Helpline or
call them on 1800 55 1800.
It is free to call and anything you say is just
between you and Kids Helpline
We can’t help feel that the R.S.L would not be
anywhere as good without Mr McFarlane. He made the
stories come to life and he narrated the whole thing
so that we could all understand. He deserves a big
thanks from the year 7 class.

Non-attendance at school and its implications
“While poor attendance is a problem across the socio-economic
spectrum, families in affluent areas often interrupt schooling for
overseas holidays”. Professor Stephen Zubrick from the
University of Western Australia
Professor Zubrick insists his message is not about finger
wagging or guilt trips, but says “we do need to recognise that
when a child is standing on the Eiffel Tower, so to speak, they
may be learning a lot about the world but they’re not necessarily
learning everything they’d be learning at school.” Sydney Morning
Herald, August 3rd 2014
A major study in Western Australia linking poor attendance to
lower NAPLAN results has found that; a10-day period of
unauthorised absence in a year is sufficient to drop a child about
a band in the NAPLAN testing. Year 3 numeracy achievement in
2012 declined by 1.6 NAPLAN points for every unauthorised day
of absence in the first two terms of that year.
Research has established that school attendance patterns
established as early as year 1 can predict how often a student will
show up to class right through high school.
Education Department figures show that, in South Australia, the
average attendance rate for public school students in 2013 was
93 per cent - about 14 days off per year - and has been relatively
consistent over the past decade. Attendance is much poorer
among high school students with the average student missing 20
days per year. The then Education Minister Jennifer Rankine said
on any given day, 3 per cent of students across the state were
missing classes without a valid reason.
Any absence from school was important learning time lost, while
frequent late arrivals may also cause learning problems and put
students behind from the start of each day. Therefore regular
attendance and participation in schooling is an important factor in
educational and life success. Students who are consistent nonattenders are at risk of alienation from education that can lead to
decreased options for future pathways
Inform the school about your child's absence
It is important to notify the school of your child's absence and the
reason for it. If you are unable to notify the school in advance,
send a note covering the days missed when your child returns. If
a student is absent due to reported illness for three or more
consecutive days the principal can ask for a medical certificate.
